Highlights of 2018

Graduation – December 2018

As always the event was an emotional day filled with excitement, tears and laughter. The students walked onto

the stage looking their best and feeling on top of the world, dressed in their gowns, to receive their certificates in

front of their personal guests. The event was followed by a special lunch for all invited as well as an incredibly

popular photo booth. The day was a resounding success and as we look at the proud faces in the below

photographs we are confident of each students success for the future.

dreaming all about airplanes and airports since hearing

they would be flying to Cape Town for work.

The Ray Mhlaba Centre, an extension of the EP

Children’s Home, offers training to socially vulnerable

youths between the ages of 18 to 25.

The pair will be joining 12 other students and will be

working at a five star hotel as hospitality professional

cookery students.

The hotel will offer them training and then employment.

Toastmaster Graduation – Cape Town

Braai Master – The WINNING TEAM!!!

We were appraoched to enter a team in the Braai Master challenge held at Champions Bar at the end of

September, the event was a compitition between local Hospitaity training academys competing in a mystry

box event to get to the final.

Out students pulled out all the stops and produced amazing street food winning them a place in the Final.

Equippted with only aprons and caps our students arrived to another myserty box challenge fired up and ready

to impress they let their creativity go crazy and took 1st place in the final. We are so proud and happy for them

for this momentus achievment. Below are a few photographs of the amazing day:

The press release features a trio of young chefs who are making strides in their

careers as their talent and passion for the industry grow. Two of these young

men Vuyisile Moyikwa and Asiphe Mbezu are graduates from our 2017

Hospitality program, their stories and comments in the article read…

Moyikwa recalls his strict childhood.

As the first born, his mother pushed him to be an example to his siblings. It was

when he failed matric that the words of his teacher rang true, “don’t be a victim

of your situation, just be victorious”. His mindset changed as he wanted to do

more with his life and pursued studies in the hospitality sector at the Ray Mhlaba

Skills Centre. This set him on a path of envisioning a future where he could own

a restaurant and catering business that could also see youth within his

community being employed.

“I am inspired daily by Radisson Blu PE sous chef, Julia van der Westhuizen, to

persevere,” said Moyikwa.

Mbezu is a pastry chef intern in the hotel’s kitchen.

Shy in nature, but confident in his ability to whip up something sweet to savor,

he too enjoys being creative in the plating process.

Being the breadwinner in his household, his caring character carries through to his work in creating special

messages for guests on occasions. A message he often conveys to his siblings and the younger generation, is to

“achieve your best and you will be successful; always believe in yourself and set your own destiny”.

The proudly Nelson Mandela Bay trio serve artfully prepared dishes. When asked what their secret recipe was, they

all agreed with the famous Thomas Keller saying: “the recipe has no soul. You, as the cook, must bring soul

to the recipe”.

Our students continue to exceed all our expentations. Pictured left

is Aviwe, Gifty and Sindy all 2017 Hospitaltiy Professional Cookery

students who gained employment at the Cape Grace in Cape

Town.

This picture was sent to us following them graduating from their

Toastmaster Training with the Hotel.

They are living proof that if you work hard and believe in yourself

the sky is the limit, they are on their way to the top and we could

not be prouder.

A student never forgets…

Goodbye Fruit & Veg City, Hello Ray Mhlaba Veggie Patch

One of our focuses for 2019 is Food Sustainablity, with this in mind we made a start with our own veggie patch

during 2018. The hospitalty students have shown great interest in nurturing the veggies and were delighted to

be able to use them where preparing there own pracital dishes. The garden is a great start for the bigger

picture for the future in this area.

In 2012 this young man pictured left, Vuyo was enrolled onto our Woodwork

Program. He told us his dream was to use his skills learned at the Centre to start

his own carpentry business as his goal was to make enough money to buy

himself a new car.

The years past and many more students went through the programs, but then

one day in December 2018 we received this photograph.

Vuyo had not forgotten what he said and has followed his dreams, he is now

living in Johannesburg, owner of his own carpentry business and proud owner

of this brand new Range Rover.

Our current Bakery students are completing their

practical hours with local Pick n Pay stores. The

group of students pictured left were the runners up

of the Regional Pie Bomb Deal where all stores in the

region battle it out to see who can make and sell

the most Pies from their Bakeries.

We are very proud of their efforts and look forward

to taking part in further competitions.
