A Note from the Principal… Waddell Students, Families and Friends,

Welcome to school year 2016-2017 at the best school in CMS! I am looking forward to another exceptional school year. Like the Rio Olympics 2016, our theme this year is “go for the gold!” We are striving for excellence in all that we do. We have high expectations for all of our students. Our teachers are ready to engage students and support them in their academic and social-emotional learning. The staff mantra to keep us focused around our students is: challenged, healthy, en-gaged, safe, supported (Education Update, August 2016, p. 7). We want our school to be a place where students feel safe and supported on their educational journey. We want our students to want to be here every day. Learning a second language is hard, at any age, but we are prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that we are “creating bright futures in six languages”. A Letter From PTSO President

Dear Parents, Welcome back! I hope all had a restful and relaxing summer. It’s hard to believe that we have started another school year and each year passes more quickly than the last. The start of the school year is the start of many new beginnings and new feelings. I have found that being involved in the PTSO keeps me connected to my children’s school and has been a rewarding experience for me . My name is Yvette Bolden and I am honored, as well as excited to serve as your PTSO president for the 2016-17 school year. My husband Jason and I have 2 daughters one in 5th grade and 7th grade. We have been proud Waddell parents for 7 years and we look forward to anoth-er great year. Working alongside of me are my Co-VP’s Jason Carey and Elizabeth Teagarden. We are grateful for our entire Board members that are made up of amazing and talented parents that contribute their time and talents in many different ways. The Mission of the PTSO is to promote quality education and a secure personal foundation for the students at Waddell Language Academy. The PTSO strives to serve the needs of the school by assisting in service, financial support, and communication to benefit parents, teachers, staff and students. Many opportunities lie ahead and we are eager to get started. The PTSO will give parents an opportunity to be engaged in their children’s school life. We encourage you to sign up and become a PTSO member, attend PTSO meeting and volunteer on PTSO committees. There are many ways in which you can become involved, weather it’s volunteering your time at World Market, Cultural Nights, Teacher Appreciation Week , Field Day, become a room parents or by supporting our school’s biggest fundraisers Boosterthon & IYC campaigns and many more! It is because of the strong volunteer efforts of our parents and the dedication of our teachers that we are able to offer so many academic and cultural activities throughout the school year. Our fundraising helps provide teacher support and support to each of our grade levels so our children can take enriching trips, attend assemblies and participate in wonderful events. We are always looking for enthusiastic parents with great ideas to join the PTSO board. On behalf of the PTSO Board we thank you for your continued support. If at any time during the school year, you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me at the school PTSO email address. Again, welcome back and have a great year! Sincerely, Yvette Bolden

NOW ACCEPTING RESERVATIONS !

Our very own Waddell Spirit Rock is ready and yours to reserve for birthdays and other special occasions!

Click on the link below to make a reservation. All details are on the form:

Be a Secret Pal!! The time of year for me to shamelessly beg for volunteers for Secret Pals has come again! For those of you not familiar with the Secret Pal program, it is an opportunity for us to bring a little sunshine to the staff (teachers, office, cafeteria, after school, custodians, etc) who make such an impact on our children's learning.

Staff members wishing to participate fill out a one-page survey with information about themselves. If you kindly reply yes to having a pal, I will forward one of these forms to you and you will then have a secret pal to leave small gifts to throughout the school year. I try my best to match up preferences for language, grade level, etc (but no promises....). The staff are to return the forms to me by 9/9 and I will send out the “assignments” after I scan them all in.

The gifts need not be extravagant or expensive. Past gifts have been cards of appreciation, candy, plants, lotions, soaps, bookmarks, small gift cards, home-baked treats, books, etc. It is entirely up to the parent how often a gift is left; be it once a week, once a month, or once a quarter. We do ask that you leave a gift at least once a quarter though. Some parents leave little gifts throughout the quarter and some parents leave one "larger" gift each quarter. It is entirely up to the gift giver!

Each staff member has a mailbox located in the office. You can also get rather creative with sending in gifts with other stu-dents to give to your pal or the majority of teachers at the school love to be involved in sneak-ing the gifts to other pals too! The office staff is always more than happy to deliver the gift to the mailbox, as long as your pal’s name is clearly labeled on the gift.

Please contact me directly at [email protected] if you would like to bring happiness to the hard-working staff at Waddell and become a Secret Pal! Thanks in advance!

Sponsors Needed for 2016 Waddell Fun Run! Sponsoring the Fun Run is a great way to get exposure for your business and help our school! Money from sponsors will be used to pur-chase 1600 t-shirts for every student and staff member. In addition, the funds will be used for teacher appreciation and incentives sur-rounding the Fun Run. Sponsors will be thanked repeatedly and visibly throughout the weeks surrounding the Fun Run. The business name will appear on 1600 t-shirts, race day banners and on an insert in to the Boosterthon student booklets. For a $500.00 donation, a sponsor will be thanked in one font size, and at $1000.00 the font size will be larger. The Fun Run is such an important part of raising money for everything the PTSO does to help the school's classrooms and programs. Please consider helping the school while promoting your business. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact Shelly Thurman at [email protected].

We are now happy to announce that Waddell will be participating in the Cray-ola ColorCycle program. This is a wonderful program where schools can send in their old markers to be recycled into new products. Teachers will have col-lection boxes in the workrooms where they can drop off old markers, dry erase markers and highlighters. Parents can send in their old markers as well. There will be a collection box in the front office. Get your kids involved in this eco-friendly program! Have them “test” their markers and send in the old ones to keep them out of the landfill.

If anyone has any questions, please contact Heather Hensley at [email protected]. You can also go to http://www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx for more info.

BECOME A HOST FAMILY FOR OUR ACADEMIC VOLUNTEERS IN THE FALL!

Each year Waddell teachers are supported not only by our staff, parents, and students –

but also by an amazing group of international academic volunteers (AVs). These student

teacher volunteers from Germany, Switzerland, France, Japan, and now China (new for the

2017-17 school year) play a vital role in our school by providing our teachers with much

needed classroom assistance at no cost to the school. In addition, they provide our children

with a second native speaker in the classroom. This is especially important in the 2nd – 5th

grades, where we no longer have a CMS provided assistant. In turn, Waddell families play

a vital role in this process by hosting these volunteers while they spend time at our school.

During the previous school year Waddell hosted an astounding 29 Academic Volunteers

who stayed, on average, from 2-6 weeks. This is an amazing endeavor that would not have

been possible without Waddell families generously opening their homes to host these AVs.

Building upon this year's success, we expect the 2016-17 school year to expand our AV

program even more. We already have information on 9 German AVs who want to come in

the Fall of 2016, with additional German, French, Japanese, and Chinese AVs to come in

early 2017. To sustain this growth we need to have Waddell families willing to open their

homes for hosting.

If your family is interested in learning more about hosting please contact Cat McClain at [email protected]. Indicating an interest does not commit you to hosting at any point

but will allow us to provide you with information when we have details on incoming AVs. This is a great opportunity that has enriched the lives of many fellow Waddell families!

Enroll your child in the ONE Access Program today! Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library are partnering to support

students' ongoing education. We are working together to ensure that every CMS student will have

access to books and resources found at their public library. CMS students are now able to use the

CMS student ID number to access and check out public library resources. This exciting initiative is

called ONE Access because the CMS student ID number is all that a student needs.

Important things to know:

Students can borrow e-resources and access library databases

Students can borrow up to 10 print or audio books

There are NO overdue fines for ONE Access accounts (users are responsible for lost book fees) Superintendent Ann Clark is asking that 100% of our students log in to the Charlotte Public Library

using ONE Access and their student ID number. Could you please help your child log into his/her

account at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library as soon as possible? This will give you and your child

the chance to see all the wonderful educational resources that can be accessed using just your

child's student ID number. The steps are outlined below.

Thank you so much and please enjoy the wealth of resources available to families and stu-
