Volume 28, Number 2 Rev. July 22 June 2010
Thoughts from the President October 31 1989 was a very important day in my spiritual life, as that is the night that I started my seventy-two hour Walk to Emmaus experience. Over the last twenty years I have had the opportunity to share my Emmaus experience with many, as I am sure many of you committed to Emmaus have. It is important that the people of your faith community hear and have the opportunity to attend this weekend Christian Retreat. This spring, my pastor Kristi Kreamer attended the Walk to Emmaus in Everett. She shared her experience with my church in our monthly newsletter. I am taking this opportunity to share her article with our Emmaus Community. It is an article that could easily be shared with people who are considering attending the weekend and people looking at our website to gain an understanding of what an Emmaus weekend is about.
In other news of importance, the Emmaus Board will be developing a leadership list for the 2011 calendar year at the July board meeting. We would like the community to be involved in nominating people you feel are qualified to be leaders for our community. The Emmaus Board would like to see the Ultreyas take a leadership role in your community in discussing people who you feel are ready to take a leadership position and filling out nomination forms. For the people who are not involved in

WALK TO EMMAUS A SPA FOR THE SOUL AND A GETAWAY FOR RENEWAL
I have already filled one sermon with stories from my weekend Walk to Emmaus experience. I have talked the ears off any for pilgrim who I thought would listen to me describe my recent weekend retreat. Daily I think of new individuals who I just know would love going on a “Walk” and I’ve suggested it to many already! OK, maybe it’s a wee bit obnoxious but when I stumble on a good thing, I just can’t help but enthuse to others and hope they might experience the same joy I have. For those who are intrigued, here’s what a Walk to Emmaus is: It’s a three-day weekend retreat for Christians to deepen their faith, encourage them with God’s love, and inspire them for service. That is accomplished through a series of short stimulating talks on the basics of the Christian faith presented by clergy and lay leaders mixed with wonderful music and singing, meaningful worship experiences, tons of delicious food, non-stop silliness and laughter, all done in the company of a whole lot of fabulous people. Oh, yes and there are many, many surprises that are just the icing on the most delicious cake you have ever eaten. Hey, I was a tough nut to crack. I was willing to go on a Walk since I’m the pastor and I need to know what the people in my parish are experiencing. But I was skeptical that it was going to be as spectacular as everyone said it would be. After all, I have been on numerous retreats, conferences and Christian camping events that were marvelous and uplifting, so I couldn’t imagine experiencing anything too new or different. But I was wrong. Walk to Emmaus was a unique and unforgettable mini-academy on the Christian Faith, crossed with bible Camp, crossed with Christmas and feeling a little bit like heaven. A Christian can never get too much grace so consider a Walk to Emmaus as one special way you can invest in your faith. —Pastor Kristi
Lay Director Thoughts — Walk # 194 Come Light the Fire
February of 1996!
Seems like ages ago! I made my “walk” at Tibbets UMC in Seattle; Sam Nagel was the LD.
The “walk to Emmaus” made a very strong impression on me. I have been growing in Christ and
have found myself getting more involved at my church. The theme was “LET GO AND LET
GOD”. This has been one of the hardest things for me to do. God however has a plan and is very
patient. He has lit a fire in me and it is burning even though I don‟t seem to pay attention.
When I was asked to be the lay director for this walk, I was not surprised because there had been
a number of people who asked if I had completed the jobs required to be LD. I was ready (in my
mind) to put together a walk. I had in mind that the theme was to be something about praise and
worshiping God. However, as hard as I tried I couldn‟t seem to stick to any one idea.
Last fall I was working in the kitchen at a walk and a couple of us were talking as we worked.
Don Kohlenberger, a great friend in Christ, was asking me about what I had in mind for the walk I
was lay leading. I told him about the worship and praise theme and we were throwing ideas around,
when I started to rap some words. He said “we should write them down”, so he took a post-it note
and did so. The words were “Come light the candle, come light the fire, come fill my heart Lord
with your desire”. These words just fell out of me. I know now where they came from; God had
given me the theme.
However, I just couldn‟t “Let go and Let God” I kept on changing my mind, back and forth, then
a friend sent me a page from one of Max Lucado‟s books, The Great House of God. “When they
saw who he was, he disappeared. They said to each other, „it felt like a fire burning in us when Jesus
talked to us on the road and explained the scriptures to us.‟” Luke 24: 31-32.
These verses are part of the ones we in WTE know are used to name the WTE itself. When I re-
ceived this note, I knew that the words God had given me in the kitchen would be the theme and the
verse, but also the words and idea for a song. The theme song is “Come Light the Candle”. The mu-
sic has come to fruition through help from my church choir director and our worship team leader,
and the words are from God. I know that this walk will light a fire in someone attending in July.
God is good and has a wonderful plan for us all who keep our eyes on Him. I am very humbled to
serve on this “walk” and I am overwhelmingly thankful to all whom God has called and have agreed
to serve.
PRAISE GOD!
YBIC—John Hart
A Gentle Reminder
Please remember that there is an $80 cost for each pilgrim you sponsor and for yourself when
serving on a team. Checks can be given to the Palanca Boss at the team meeting, on the walk
or mailed to the PSWTE post office box. Please indicate the walk number on your check.
Lay Director Thoughts — Walk #195 The Hands of the Potter
The idea of being an LD came to me, not from being asked by the PSWTE board, but from being in the
Prayer Vigil room at Immanuel Lutheran Church. I was the Love Team chair for that set of walks and
was praying for the Pilgrims and Team during the feast. As I sat there the song “Hands of the Potter”
kept playing in my head and the thought (God whisper) came to me that this would make a great theme
song for a Walk.
That evening I looked up a couple of Bible verses that referenced the “Hands of the Potter” and decided
that Isaiah 64:8 spoke to my heart. “Oh Father, we are the clay, you are the potter. We are all the works
of your hand.”
On Monday morning I walked into Anita Dudra‟s classroom (we taught in the same building) and an-
nounced that IF I was ever asked to be an LD I had the song, theme, scripture and logo all lined out.
She smiled at me until I went on to say that SHE was the person that God had picked to be the ALD.
A few years later I was asked to consider being an LD, but had to decline because I was in the middle of
my first year of National Teaching Board certification. While I was in my second year of certification I
got a call from Roger Nelson asking if I would prayerfully consider it again. This time I knew I was
closer to saying “yes.” I asked for a few days to think/pray about it. Confirmation that this was God‟s
plan came over and over again. We were setting up the church for the fall Walks, and once again I was
on the Love Team. When I told the other team members that I had been asked, the response from them
was positive and encouraging. Over the next few days support came from various other people, also.
My biggest concern was that I would need one more year to earn my National Board Certification. So
that was when I decided to “let go and let God.” I would say “yes” and just assume that God would
take care of providing what I needed. So in early October I told Roger that I would be LD for Walk
#195, and on November 20, I was informed that I had earned my certification.
Since then the confirmations from God have continued to flow. Anita agreed to serve as the ALD (she
says she HAD to, her full name is Anita Louise Dudra.) God provided a wonderful group of Core Team
leaders to work with us. My husband has been strong and supportive. I feel blessed each day to have
been given this opportunity to serve. Like the clay in the hands of the Potter, I know God is not finished
with me yet.

Statement of Leadership Commitment
Puget Sound Walk to Emmaus (PSWTE) is an ecumenical community of faith and is guided by God‟s
word. With many denominations represented, PSWTE leaders are called to maintain a healthy
accountability to our sponsoring body and are guided by two essential principles: (1) that every person
is created in the image of God, loved by God, and a person of sacred worth and (2) we affirm God‟s
grace is available to all.
Therefore, we commit ourselves to be in ministry for, and with, all persons; serving “as Christ‟s hands
and feet”. Each person involved in the leadership of a Walk for PSWTE must (1) have their own belief
in Christ and accepted Him as personal Lord and Savior; (2) be active in their local church; and (3)
living a life that glorifies God and points others to a personal relationship with Christ.
As such, we must respect the privacy of individuals that may be struggling with issues of the world. We
must maintain the integrity of the ministry and refuse to let it become a platform for those might want to
use it as a venue for their own personal or denominational views. Every effort must be taken to ensure
that matters will not be brought forward that could become divisive. Christians have differing views on
a number of important issues such as baptism, Holy Communion, birth control, religious experiences,
worship practices, and lifestyles. When any person is unable to lay aside their own views on these, or
any other topics that would divide the Emmaus community, it creates a problem that impacts the integ-
rity of the ministry. Those persons who are so passionate in pursuing their concerns and their issues that
they can not set aside those concerns and issues at any time should excuse themselves from participation
in Emmaus. Anyone who continues to pursue personal agendas will be counseled in grace and given
chances to set them aside when serving PSWTE. If situations continue to occur, individuals will be
asked to step down from serving the PSWTE.
The focus of the Emmaus ministry must remain on Jesus Christ and the essential theology and practices
of the Christian church in support of pilgrims. All leaders on a Walk to Emmaus weekend are asked to
commit to this purpose and to ensure all personal beliefs, theology, and agendas are left out of the week-
end. All clergy are asked to hold their to their ordination vows and follow the guidelines of the Walk to
Emmaus ministry. All PSWTE leaders and members (including Board and Committee members, core
team, worship team, clergy, cha chas, speakers and back-ups, palanca, kitchen and love & agape team
chairs) are asked to read and commit to the PSWTE Assurance of Faith (see below or pswte.org web
site) to ensure that the Walk to Emmaus continues to provide an environment of grace, love, prayer, and
acceptance which accurately represents God‟s commandments.
