CrownwearsBishop gagOK, stand back: gossip from theMelbourne Press Club Quillsnight has been pouring in, and Diary isbarelygoingto haveroomforitall, butletsgetstarted:yes,it

is true Crown casino was incan-descent with rage about thespeechby JuliaGillard imperson-ator Amanda Bishop , but theyvesince come around. Bishop let ripat Crown, saying the venue re-mindedherofnothingsomuchasthe inside of Andrew Bolt s head(Boltbeinga softtarget, sincehescurrently in court fighting for hisgood name). The gag went downlikea leadballoon withCrown.

Spruiker Anne Peacock, whofronts up every year like the goodsportsheis, wasdismayed;sowereothers at the Crown tables, andthere was indeed some dark mut-tering about whether Crownshould bother sponsoring so hos-tile an event. In an effort to patchthings up, master of ceremoniesPeter Mitchell , who was excel-lent, gave Peacock special thanksin his wrap. There was no officialcomment from Crown yesterday, but Diary spokequietlytosome of the players over the weekend. Of coursetheywouldhavepreferred, ashosts, nottogetoneintheneckfrom the guests, butwhat can youdo? Censor a Press Club speech?Obviouslynot. So theyretakingitonthechin.

    Singer-Trioli spat

BESIDES the Crown crisis, howdelicious was the Twitter-spat be-tween two of the ABCs high-profile reporter-presenters, JillSinger and Virginia Trioli? It be-ganwhenthe sameGillardimper-sonator, in her speech, warnedSingertostayoffthehousered.

The camera cut to Singer and, well, letsjustsayshewasnotatallamused.Trioli, whoisagoodsport when people poke fun at her, tweeted:IfI canbeMichaelRow-land, surely Jill Singer can take a joke? Trioli toldDiary she wasnt being mean. I just wanted to say, comeon,Jill, laughitoff, anditwillsoongo away.

But Singer, who tweets assnooplady wasnt amused:Some fat creep at the Quills tellsme to go and enjoy a tipple whilehes literally dribbling. Then she

    tweetedto Trioli:Whatthe. . . are

you on about? Some say she alsotriedto organisea walk-outof theRMIT table (Singer is a lecturerthere).

Singer was still stony-faced when called to the stage to collecther Quill, shoving the statue un-derherarm andmarchingoff. She was soon home, where she againhit Twitter, saying: Home nhappy after winning a Quill . . .only downside isVirginia Triolisrelentless nastiness. Go the Sista-hood. . .not!

He said: I got an invite a weekor so ago. Laurie Oakes accepted hisstatue from Australias most beautiful writer, LesCarlyon , andFairfax bossGreg Hywood (Fair-fax provides the cheque for 20grand).

Slyssharp speechIT has been some time since yourhost at Diary lived in Melbourne but if the Quills are any guide, itsgone all racy. Practically everyspeech referenced somebodysundies, or else their comely be-hinds. Take Sly of the Under- world aka JohnSilvester.

Hestartedhis speechbysayinghewasgoingtotalkaboutwhatIknow, which is drug-addledpsychopaths, and women whoperform lewd sexual acts but infact talked mostly about how heused to go commando underskin-tight flares because, as a

    youngcrimereporter, hehad the

best bottom in journalism. Youcould eat your dinner off it, it wasthat good.Diary didnt meet Slyuntil the early 1990s, and can sayonlythis:hisbacksidewas, indeed, assharpas thatspeech.

    Popularchoice

MASSIVELY popular choice forGold Quill was Jill Baker , whoriffed about her cropped hair:One of my mates the other daysaid: Put on the black skivvy, Jill, apply for the arts grant; with thathair, youll get heaps of dough. Baker also let slip that HWT col-leagues were surprised to find she was the kind of chick who wore$100-a-pair undies. (Her dismayat the paper knickers she had to wear while undergoing cancertreatment is a highlight of herprize-winning article, The Big CandMe.)

Mystery prizeALSO popular was the LifetimeAchievement Award to humble, talented, honest Geoff Wilkin-son,whohadnoideahewasaboutto get a prize, until his wife,Dorothy , leaned over and said,Better put your jacket on. Wil-kinson was cheered on by familymembers, including his 89-year-old super-proud father, who

slippedinunderthecoverofdark-ness and stayed at the back of theroomuntilhisname wascalled.

Imagine her horror, waking to headlines yesterdaythat a minister in the new NSWgovernment, Pru Goward, thinksshesnotuptoscratchasamother. Diary was astounded by Gowardsintervention, not least because, asminister for the severely dysfunc-tional DOCS, she has genuinefamily tragedies on her hands. Why get stuck into a vulnerablenew mother for crossing the road with her baby to get a bunch of gerberas?
