The Pros and Cons of Plastic Injection Molding

Plastic injection molding is one of the most common techniques of plastic molding. It is one of those

techniques has have been used for a long time and have evolved over the years. The low operation cost

of this method makes it one of the preferred choices of molding plastic. Also the simplicity of operation

of this method makes the process easy to use and also makes sure that the product that is intended to

be created can be created in the most simple of ways. Maintenance cost of this process is also relatively

lesser than other complicated processes.

Let us take a look at the process of injection molding. There are few key components in injection

molding. The starting of the process includes feeding plastic pellets into the hopper. This is to provide

raw materials to the injection molding process. After the pellets are fed into the hopper they are

crushed and heated to form the molten slag. This molten slag is fed at high pressure with the help of an

injector into the die. The die is shaped like the object that is to be created. The molten slag of plastic will

take the shape of the die and after it is cooled down it will solidify into the shape of the object. The key

here is to inject the molten plastic at high pressure so that it fills up the shape of the die well. This is why

this process is known as injection molding.

There are many advantages of injection molding over other processes of plastic molding. The first

advantage would be the low cost of operation. Also the process is simple to make use of and there is no

need of specialized workers to work with the process of injection molding. All that is really required is to

feed the plastic pellets into the machine. The shape of the die is the next important requirement and if

these two needs are taken care of then the rest of the process is almost automatic. Therefore such

simplicity and low running cost of operation helps to produce plastic products in a bulk. This makes sure

that you can take up a large number of projects. Complex parts made out of plastic can be easily

produced by this process because of the very high pressure involved. This means complicated parts or

parts with high detail can be produced. Also since the cycle volume is low, there can be a large number

of parts made the numbers of which would run into millions.

There are a few disadvantages with this process also. Bottles that have large undercuts cannot be

produced through this process. Also the mold cost is very high. Therefore to make it a profitable

business a large number of parts have to be produced at a single go. Also even though the operation

cost is low, the startup cost for the process is very high which would mean that you would need a good

business order of high volume to actually make profits.
