bitterly she wept if one were dead”
Chaucer has the nun uphold her proper values by making her into a more worldly religious person because at the time nuns had money and high moral values and she carried herself in a proper manner
Chaucer's Criticism Chaucer is criticizing on how the church is
corrupt and showing that not all people who give themselves to god are not as holy as they appear
Main characters Widow- 7 year old boys mother7 year old boy- a Christian boy who went to a
Christian school. On his tombstone he was named as Hugh of Lincoln
SettingAsia
Plot Synopsis The boy everyday would have to go through a Jewish
neighborhood. When the boy goes through the neighborhood he would sing the son “O Alma Redemptoris” (Virgin Mary song) and the Jewish people would not recognize the Virgin Mary and hated the boy singing it through their neighborhood.
The Jewish people decided that they would murder the boy to silence him. The boys mother wandered through the streets looking for her boy and was led by an unseen force to his grave. The townspeople still heard the boy singing and found out the Jews killed the boy and hung them and cursed all who were involved.
Theme: anti-semitism Through out the tale Chaucer displays anti-
semitism between the Jews and Christians. One might think it is one sided and that the Jews are the “bad” ones because they killed the little boy singing. However when Chaucer describes the Jews coming up with the plan to kill the little boy he mentions that they were apart of Satan's nest. Implying that Jews are friends of Satan.
Breton laiThe Prioress’ Tale is considered a breton lai
because the boy is brought back from the dead and was singing as a result of the holy water.
Source of the TaleThe constant religious battle over the
religious views about the Virgin Mary.
Contemporary CounterpartsThis tale can be related to the holocaust
because of the different views and beliefs and there own religion and the meaningless killing.
This tale can also be related to “West Side Story” because in “West Side Story” two great opposing forces go at it and an innocent bystander dies in the process of their feud.
