Dear Parents

I am writing to update you about news and initiatives

within the College.

Year 11 Students

I would like to congratulate our Year 11 students on their hard work leading up to the examination period. Over the last term and a half many of them have volunteered for extra classes and approached their examination preparation maturely. For example during the Easter break students were offered extra voluntary classes in Sports Studies to complete coursework. Over 60 students attended and worked really hard. in the future.

Timetable for

September 2010

We have been looking at our timetable with the view to reducing disruption for our students. There is clear evidence that students

learn best when they have a very consistent approach to their learning and so we try, as far as possible, to minimise disruptions to the timetabled day. However, there are inevitable disruptions for events such as: careers fairs, enterprise days, geography field study visits, staff training days and

The Principal’s Update continued /...

Lastly I would like to congratulate one of our students, Charlotte Cameron in Triumph House who on Saturday May 22nd undertook a sponsored swim at Fareham Leisure Centre for the Triumph House Charity KIDS. This was entirely her own initiative. She swam 5 kilometres, which is 200 lengths of the

pool. Well done Charlotte.

With best wishes for an

enjoyable summer,

Yours sincerely,

Phil Munday

Principal

I would like to emphasise that we are not suggesting that there are any other uniform changes proposed. Blazers will still be required and all other aspects of the uniform will remain. We do want your opinion on this matter and a questionnaire will be sent out to all parents in the next two weeks. We would be grateful for your response as the Governors will undertake to consider all the different responses from all interested parties

at the meeting on 8 July.

1:1 Reviews

We have now completed our first year of 1:1 reviews where we have also invited parents to attend. Several parents completed questionnaires which mostly indicate that you have valued the opportunity to be involved in these meetings. Some parents have commented that the timings of the different meetings were sometimes too close together, particularly for Year 8 and 9 parents when the majority of meetings took place during the

Spring term. We will be reviewing our calendar of dates to make adjustments. I would like to emphasise that we really do value your involvement in these

meetings.

Arrangements for the

second half of the term

Year 10 students will be going out on their Work Experience for two weeks starting on Monday 28th June. During that time a number of different activities will be taking place for Years 7,8 and 9 including several residential visits. We will be holding a Non-Uniform Day on Thursday 1st July to support the charity work of Invincible and Triumph Houses. We will also be running a House Activity Day on Friday 2nd July. For these two days students will be allowed to wear non-uniform provided they have contributed to the

charity collections.

We have also moved Sports Day to Friday 16th July in order to enable year

10 students to take part.

Mobile Phones and MP3 Players— We allow students to bring their MP3 players into college and use them at breaks

and lunchtimes. We also allow students to bring in mobile phones for use after school.

We ask that they are not used during the college day as any communication with home can be made through the college office.

We have two concerns about this arrangement. Firstly, we need to explain that we are unable to guarantee security for these items as they are small and very portable as well as being relatively expensive. They can always be deposited at the college office for safe keeping

during the college day.

Secondly, it is essential that they are kept out of sight and turned off during lessons as their use can hinder the good learning environ-ment of the classroom. Students have been warned that if they are used in classrooms during lessons they are liable to be confiscated. In this situation it may be necessary to ask you to come and collect them on behalf of your children. We would be grateful if you could

reinforce these points with your children if they do bring these items in.

Henry Cort hosts International Visitors

Spotlight Page 3

Through the Connecting Classrooms Initiative organised by the British Council, Henry Cort hosted visitors from two link

schools in Ethiopia and the rural Limpopo region of South Africa.

The Connecting Classrooms Initiative builds lasting partnerships between schools in the UK and others around the world. Through these partnerships the programme develops trust and understanding between young people in different societies,

creating a safer and more connected world for the future.

The visiting teachers came to find out about education in British schools. This follows a visit by Henry Cort students last year to South Africa. Following this visit, plans will be made for the Ethiopian and South African visitors to bring their

students across to the UK.

The International teachers spent time at Whiteley Primary School and other schools linked to Henry Cort to gain a broader experience of the

education system.

Mr Munday, Principal at Henry Cort, commented “This is a wonderful opportunity for students and teachers here at the college to learn about

different cultures and how schools operate in different countries”.

Year 8 pupils talk to our Ethiopian Guests

Some of the year 8 pupils recently had a fantastic opportunity to have a lesson with our Ethiopian guests while they were visiting last month. Pupils had spent a couple of lessons investigating the country in geography lessons and had prepared some fact files and questions to put to the visitors. They found out a lot of interesting information and in many cases realised that Ethiopia was not quite what they had imagined it would be, and not all the information they researched was true! Pupils really enjoyed listening to their stories and finding out about school life in an African country. It is hoped that pupils will be able to set up some correspondence with pupils in an Ethiopian

school in the future.

Year 9 Sustainable Olympics!

As part of the ‘Geography of Sport’ topic, pupils learnt about how the London 2012 Olympic Games could be sustainable. Pupils in each class were set the task of designing and making a sustainable Olympic stadium using recycled materials. They had to present their finished stadi-ums with a detailed explanation of how it would be sustainable to the rest of the class. Each class then chose a winner who went through to the finals. Mrs Kopitsa and Mrs Moore as-sessed each finalist and chose an overall winner. This year’s winners were Isobel Wood and Megan Ellard. Their stadium was extremely well designed and included some excellent fea-tures such as solar panels on the roof and wind turbines to create renewable power. Money

would be donated to research into developing hydrogen powered cars.

DEBATE EVENING On the 27th April, five G&T students from year 10 took part in the first ‘Fareham and Gosport Consortium Debate Evening’. The team, made up of George Upton, Phillip Dale, Honor Burcham, Amy Fraser and Annice Dunning, had

worked hard beforehand to prepare a speech based on the topic of Rights, Responsibilities, Really?

On the evening, the Henry Cort students joined teams from Portchester and Cams Hill at Fareham College, to present their research and then question an invited panel. The panel included Chief Constable Alex Marshall, Deputy News Editor Mark Acheson , Politician Caroline

Dinenage as well as the Principal of Fareham College, Carl Groves.

The Henry Cort team presented superbly, impressing the panel with the range of research that they had undertaken. Their following questions which included ‘Why are there such inconsistencies in age limits in the UK?’ certainly put the panel on

the spot!

Following the main event, students then had the opportunity to mingle with the invited guests as well as enjoying a buffet. Our students performed admirably, both before and during the evening, representing the college superbly. The event contributed to the curriculum extension provided for out G&T students, as well as allowing them to gain

some valuable speaking and listening experience.

The consortium plans to repeat the event next year with a new focus and even more participation from local

schools. Well done to all involved! Miss McKay

Year 8 remembrance tour of Portsmouth

On Thursday 13th May, thirty Year 8 students went on a remembrance tour in Old Portsmouth. We started at the Round Tower and Molly Bedford read a poem about remembering the soldiers that died in WW1 and WW2. It really made us think carefully about the servicemen who had passed through the harbour entrance on their way into battle. Then we went to The Point where our tour guide, Tim, pointed out where the soldiers were loaded onto the ships ready to go to war. Whilst we were there Jamie Meech read a poem. After that we walked towards and looked at different memorials such as a statue showing a family moving to America and also a memorial to servicemen killed during the Falklands conflict. Each memorial was different and showed the many ways in which the city of Portsmouth remembers those who have lost their lives in battle. Next, we went to Royal Garrison Church to look at how the bombings during WW2 had affected the church. It even showed burn marks on the end of the pews. Also the ceiling was missing! Then we went and had lunch on these wavy benches. After that we went to Southsea to see a massive memorial to soldiers killed in both World Wars. Our guide was very knowledgeable and showed how to find peoples’ names along the wall. We were searching along the plaque to try and find our surnames and some of us were lucky enough to find them! Finally, we went to Kingston Cemetery to do a memorial service and lay a wreath from our school. Then we took part in a two minute silence after reading out some poems. Then we finally headed home after a great day out! We have learnt a lot, such as where the soldiers fought and how they felt.

Invincible We will rock you!

An excellent summer term for Invincible, with many students taking part in a whole host of events.

Sadie Thompson, Jamie Meech, Jack Fitt were wonderful in the college play, ‘Bugsy Malone’, and Tom Abbey contributed to a brilliant

musical accompaniment.

In sports, Kelly Simm continues to dazzle with her displays at Gymnastics on a national and international level and keeps up with all her college and homework. Matt Harrison is being watched as a possible for the national under 16 rifle shooting team. Ewan Castle has received an award for 100 caps in football. Amber Cunningham took part in a dressage competition and Georgia Aslet-Clark has won a

number of medals for her gymnastics training.

In the Catering exam Chantelle Price and Kieran Wills proved to be stars. Keiran’s ‘Toast with Butter’ looked the real McCoy!

Julie Sharpe is right to be very proud of her music medal for achievement in her music assessment.

Isabel Wood has won a Platinum Certificate this term and Amy Jacobs and Emily Abbey have both received Gold Certificates.

The following first eleven students have maintained one hundred per cent attendance this school year:

Tom Abbey IEO Josh Fletcher IEO Tom Frisby IGW Jon Gibbison IFD

Aaron Gibbison IUB Amy Jacobs IPM Jacob Moore IBB Emily March ICM

Beth Sims ISC Lucy Savage IFD Luke Romaine IPM

Well done to all the above – an excellent achievement.

And finally, Yershan Makashev who was with family in Kazakhstan during the Icelandic Ice Cloud, managed to make his own way home

on trains for fifty hours. What ingenuity – puts a certain member of staff to shame!

Victorious (continued)

Student Voice: Issues discussed in the meeting before half term included the timing of tutor time since the change

to the beginning of the day, and preparing for tutor group assemblies. A review of the first year of the House system

will be the focus for this half term, and student representatives will also be discussing ideas for future challenges

with their tutor groups. Well done to Ashley Snell, Year 7 BW who volunteered to take on the role of minute

secretary for the House.

Challenges: At the end of last term we completed the “tie” challenge. The final was closely contested between PR and

SC, with PR finally winning. This term we have launched a “Make the word” challenge.

Victorious finally has a mascot, presented to the House during an assembly. Figment is a purple Disney character from

Disney World Florida, who features in one of the rides. The character based on “figment of the imagination”, is an

ideal choice. Students were asked to consider what their ideal future would be. They were then challenged to reflect

on ways they could make that vision a reality. Figment, passed around the tutor groups as each new challenge is won,

will be a reminder that Victorious students are constantly encouraged to achieve their potential, and strive for

excellence in all aspects of College life.

DARING

The first bit of good news is that Daring are back on top in terms of attendance! After being pipped to the post by Triumph

last time, we have regained the top spot once again!

Within our House, DJE have remained untouchable regarding tutor group attendance, well done! The latest figures are

below:

House News

Triumph

Once again it has been a very busy term for all of the students in Triumph House. I will begin this article

by again thanking the great majority of students in the house whose attendance is excellent, who work

hard while they are here, who behave well and continue to give the House a good name both within and

outside the college. There is lots of evidence of this below.

First of all, further news about Charlotte Cameron’s swim for our adopted charity KIDS.

As we all know Charlotte completed a 5 kilometre swim just before half term. That is 200 lengths of

Fareham Leisure centre pool. Congratulations to Charlotte on this outstanding individual effort and

achievement. She has also accumulated 87 merits which means that she is one of 5 students in the house

who have gone past Platinum which was the maximum that we had thought that students would be able to

achieve when we set the system up. Other students who have achieved Gold and above in the last half

term are

Gold Certificates Platinum Certificates

Harry Bascombe Gemma Turner

Michelle Cagnasso Holly Prentice

Rohaise Lamport Megan Ellard (92 Merits)

and finally Georgia Farr, who already has in excess of 100 merits . We also have a number of other

students who have already achieved their Silver certificates and are racing towards Gold. I look forward

to giving you their names in our next article.

I would also like to say Congratulations to Zoey Hall and Harry Smallman who both took on leading roles in

the school production Bugsy Malone and they certainly performed exceptionally well. Well done to both

of you and all other members of Triumph House who performed in the play.

Does the date May 6th mean anything to you? On this day all students in Triumph House took part in a

mock general election. Following an assembly to heighten awareness and to ask students to try to look for

reasons for voting for any particular party, students were given the opportunity to vote in college.

Interestingly, we actually had a very narrow win for the Liberal Democrats over the Conservatives with

Labour being beaten into third place. Apart from taking part in the voting process this certainly also

increased the amount of interest that students took in the actual election on the day.

I would also like to congratulate Jodie Brett who is in TKP. Jodie has just completed her fourth season

with Chelsea Ladies. This involves her going up to Chelsea’s training ground twice in the week after school

and then going to wherever the game may be on Saturday mornings. This season she has been Captain of

the under 14 team. She has also just received an award as the team’s player of the season. Jodie is a

great example to other students as despite this tiring schedule, she also always completes her work on

time, is always polite and positive and has a great attitude to college generally. We wish her success in her

trial for the under 16 team which she will be doing shortly.

Finally, it is sports day this half term and we will be looking to improve on our excellent results within the

year groups and overall last year. Come on the Yellow Submarine!

Next Meeting – This will be rescheduled for Wednesday 16 June as the Prom for year 11 will be held on 30 June 2010.

Topics for Future

Discussion

• Outstanding request for overview of English

• Role of Governors

• ICT

• Mentoring process feedback

There is an offer from Mrs MacDonald to discuss career support for students and from Mr Bristow to discuss sex and relationship education.

Sue Laney—HCLW

Mr Munday welcomed parents and introduced Mr Hartnell who has an additional responsibility for the website and IT.

Mr Hartnell explained how the college’s use of IT systems will form an interface between college and home.

Reports and attendance data held on SIMS ( School Information Management System) will become available to parents in “real time”. This will display individual pupil attendance, achievement, behaviour and other personal data. The VLE, “Virtual Learning Environment”, is available already for lessons, revision and shows examples of processes eg mathematical problems. There are complexities with password access so the college will be cautious before going live with information as accuracy of the data and the security of each student is paramount.

Uniform – Mr Munday explained that a working group of students supervised by two teachers is carrying out

research on a suggested change of uniform relating only to ties and polo shirts. They are looking at other schools and costs and will report back to Governors, parents and teachers. The blazer will remain as part of the uniform. He hopes that some of the students will be able to report back at the next forum.

10th Day timetable – Mr Fielon gave parents a copy of the draft timetable for the 10th day next year along with a published article detailing how students in other schools have benefited from a more flexible curriculum.

Mr Munday explained that being able to plan into a 10th day extended learning blocks as well as some educational visits will lead to a less disrupted period of learning on the other 9 days. CPD days, Sports Day and 1:1 Mentoring would all be timetabled on the 10th day meaning the routines of lessons could be adhered to. There would, for example, be time on the 10th day for an

FAREHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL

GAMES 2010

We are very busy at the moment planning our 2nd Fareham Primary School games. Last year we had a great time during National School Sport week hosting Hockey, Netball, Tag-Rugby and Athletics over the

course of a day.

Last year we had over 250 children from all over Fareham competing against each other and this year we hope to include more. We are hosting the games here at Henry Cort on - June 29th for KS2 and at Fareham Leisure Centre - June 30th

for KS1.

We are hoping the Mayor will be attending to award some trophies and to have our event in the local papers. Our local Lloyds TSB bank manager will be on hand during the two days as Lloyds TSB is the sponsor of National School Sport Week and they are giving up their time to come

and support the day.

This is a great opportunity for all sports leaders in each of our secondary schools to come together at this event and represent Fareham. The sports leaders will be involved in many aspects of the day. Some of the roles involved are officiating, results tables, time keeping, team management, planning and setting up. This gives the leaders an opportunity to put into action all that they have learnt at their own secondary schools. Without these sports leaders we would not be able to run this event so it is great to have

their support.

FAREHAM SCHOOL SPORT

PARTNERSHIP

SUMMER TERM :

The summer term is always a busy time for the partnership as it is for everyone else. This is a time when we continue to organise our coaching programme and festivals across the borough but also look

at planning for next year.

Our cluster schools this term have been involved in some tag rugby coaching and have taken part in a festival here at Henry Cort. Several of the schools have been involved in a dance festival having had Ros Matthews one of our specialist dance

teachers going into school.

We continue to offer our primary schools the opportunity to attend our racket skills sessions at Henry Cort on a Monday 4-5pm and also our secondary school pupils the opportunity to attend a badminton

session on a Monday night 2.35 – 3.45pm.

Over 40 primary school children had the opportunity to attend a leadership course here at Henry Cort and now have some of the skills needed to organise some playground activities in their own school. We look forward to hearing all about

them.

Some of our yr11 pupils took up the opportunity to have some dance lessons from professional ballroom dance teacher

Kelly Ann Prouton.

Do you have limited ICT skills? Would you like to be able to help your children with their homework? If so, you are invited to attend a free course for adults and children to explore ICT together; it is an opportunity for parents to learn techniques which will help support their child’s learning and for children to ‘show off’ how much they know in ICT. This

course is aimed at the parent improving their ICT skills in order to be able to help their children.

Topics can include

What will my child learn about computers at school

Updating your own ICT skills

Safety and the internet

Year 10 – Osmington Bay Residential Trip 14th-17th May

16 year 10 students recently spent 4 days at Osmington Bay PGL in Dorset carrying out a range of fieldwork activities to develop their knowledge and understanding of river and coastal processes. On the Friday afternoon students got the opportunity to

try their hand at quad biking and fencing.

On Saturday pupils studied the River Wye from source to mouth, investigating how the river channel, velocity and

sediment changed.

On Sunday they visited the World Heritage site of Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, part of the Jurassic coast. They were able to see some of the most amazing coastal landforms in the country including arches, stacks, stumps, caves and coves. Students learnt how each land form was created and considered what the coastline may look like in the

future.

Pupils visited the Isle of Portland on Monday, stopping to observe one of the longest tombolos in the world, Chesil beach and the coastal defences at Chiswell cove. From a view point at the top of the island pupils could see the new Olympic marina and reflect on the impact it will have on the area. To complete the trip students visited the Lighthouse at Portland Bill, the most southerly tip of the island. The students were extremely well behaved, and were a real credit to the

school.
