Cheers Ches Hargreaves Principal Deputy Principal’s Update Each year we endeavour to celebrate and recognise the work of the different staff roles. On Friday 6th May and Monday 9th we recognised the "Admin Team" for Admin Day. Leanne, Lea and Beryl are the front line of school communication and connection with the community. They play many other roles as well and we wanted to let them know our appreciation for what they do. Next term we will celebrate Teacher Aide Day and the Cleaners and Schools Officer Day and in term 4 we celebrate World Teacher’s Day. We also celebrate special days for our therapists. Last week some students from Year 11, Senior 4 & 5, attended their Leadership Camp at Bornhoffen PCYC in the Gold Coast hinterland. The focus of this camp is for students to face their fears and support their peers. The students faced some challenging activities and from what I heard it was a great camp for all involved. The idea of this leadership camp was to ready the 11 students for senior leader roles next year when they are in year 12. Also last week a group students attended the Rugby League Day that was organised by Arthur Vernon, one of our staff members. As the day fell at the same time as the Senior Leadership Camp there was minimal transport available and unfortunately not all students were able to attend. The day was organised around practicing playing the game of rugby league

and then actually playing a game. Our team of students playedagainst the Multicap team and won 8-2. A great effort from thestudents involved. We are encouraging Arthur to organise otherrugby league activities or visits in the future.

Thanks to the P&C for again organising the Mother’s Day Stallthis year. The staff and students appreciate the work that goesinto preparing for this. It was great to hear that all the studentswere very polite while purchasing their gifts. Thanks also toJanine who set up our display at the Mother’s Day OrchidSociety Show and to Ches for attending on Mother’s Day andcollecting our display.

Mobile Phones at School

On another note we would like to inform parents that becauseof numerous issues around mobile phone use by students atschool we have decided that, as of Monday 30th May, if yourchild brings their mobile phone to school (this includes anyother devices that can take photos or have earphones) we willbe asking them to be handed into the office at the beginningof the day for safe-keeping and to be picked up at the endof the day. Students who travel on school buses to and fromschool do not require their phone at all, unless it is part of theircommunity engagement program. Thanks for your help andsupport in this.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)All teachers and teacher aides recentlycompleted an Effective Behaviour Support(EBS) survey. This self-assessment toolcaptures the extent to which positivebehaviour systems and practices are in placeacross the school. The results bothreaffirmed many of our current practices forencouraging positive student behaviour and highlighted areasfor improvement. After discussing the results, the PBLcommittee has identified three priority areas and formulatedstrategies for improvement. This data-based approach iscentral to all PBL schools.

Meet the Chickens

About 4 weeks ago 12 chickens and 2ducks joined our school community. Thechickens came in a wide variety of coloursand breeds. The chickens and ducks havea real soothing effect on staff and students. They offer great enjoyment as the students

watch them scratching and interacting with each other.

The chickens are just starting to lay some eggs and in the futureit is hoped they will produce 6-8 nutritional free range eggsmost days. These eggs will go to the tuckshop and help withcooking programs at the school. The chickens and ducks willalso benefit the school by providing fertiliser for the garden andcontrolling pest insects.

They are also helping to enhance students’ communicationskills. Students are initiating conversation as they ask questionsand make vocal their observations of the chickens and ducks. Some students are fascinated by the chickens and ducks andare keen to learn as much about them as they can.

With raising chickens and ducks also comes the responsibilityof cleaning and looking after them. It is hoped looking afterthem will promote independent living skills as students managethe chickens and ducks’ daily care.

The chickens and ducks seem very happy and have settled inwell. They should enjoy their stay at Aspley Special School andprovide many benefits to our school for years to come.

My class has been very busy with their cardmaking enterprise. Brian W won the namingcompetition by introducing our business as“A Stack of Cards.”

During the week we work on our functionalnumeracy and literacy skills by planning ourtimelines, advertising, budgeting and

pricing. On Fridays, the production team are in full swing, making the cards, stamping and packaging them and stickingthe prices on. The students have used a variety of methods todecorate the cards, including collage, scrapbooking, Irisfolding, painting, printing and marbling. We also have to factorin some shopping days to replenish our stock.

We sold $80 worth of cards at the recent Orchid SocietyMothers’ Day Show. We also regularly sell our cards outsideThe Frothee Coffee Shoppee on Fridays between 10 am and12.00. There is always a display of cards for sale in the frontoffice too.

We are taking orders for Christmas Cards. Please contact mevia the front office if you would like to place an order.

Thank you for supporting our Enterprise.

From the OfficeWhat a long term this one is or so it seems. Another four weeksuntil the school break.

Update on the Gym - We are in the process of getting quotesfor a suitable shed and siting approval has been obtained. Oncethe shed is up, the process of getting the gym lined and readyto be used, will take a little time. At least the process has begun.

If you have an oversupply of plastic shopping bags, please sendthem to the office, as our cleaners recycle these in the smallrubbish bins.

Thank you to all those parents and carers who have paid theVoluntary Contribution. These receipts can be claimed in yourtax return.

The site has been readied for our new trampoline installation. The old trampoline was falling apart. This should happen thisweek and I’m sure it will be put to use as soon as sighted bythe students.

When disaster strikes!

When things go wrong, what can you always count on? - Yourfingers!

From the ChaplainIt’s been a full and exciting past month asChappy at Aspley with a couple of things toupdate you on.

I am very pleased to share that we weresuccessful at gaining top place in Grill’dChermside’s Local Matters Fundraiser forApril. Grill’d have notified me that we willreceive $300 from their community grants

program. It’s a great result & many thanks to Grill’d, our schooland local community for their support in this promotion.

On the issue of fundraising and Chaplaincy - I am frequentlyasked about the funding of the role through Governmentgrants/other sources, and how it all works. In a nutshell, eachschool within the funding scheme receives a $20,000government grant which makes a significant contributiontowards the funding of a Chaplain for 2 days/week. This fundingis guaranteed under the current arrangement and budget cycleuntil the end of 2018. There is however an annual shortfall tothe costs of the Chaplaincy service that needs to be raisedlocally to maintain the minimum 2days. Our Chaplaincy serviceat Aspley requires just over $6000 each year from our localnetworks and community to meet the shortfall, hence our active& developing plan to fundraise and source regular financialsupport.

One of the exciting developments that has been in the pipelinefor some time and we are looking to launch is the school CoffeeVan for Chaplaincy. Our Hospitality teacher Kylie Taylor has hadthe vision and driven this initiative, coordinated a team in variouspreparation roles, and we have the necessary things in placeto get underway. Not only did the coffee van need to be setup functionally onsite – Thank you to our groundsman DavidWeatherhead for all his work, and the generosity of BrisbaneCity Council for donating and delivering recycled cable drumsfor our customer’s tables. It was also important to sourcequality coffee beans and sponsorship. We are very excitedto say that Cleanskin Coffee Company (Brendale) hasgenerously agreed to sponsor our Chaplaincy venture, providing their top quality coffee at reduced cost, great barista

training for the team, and ongoing support as we develop ourinitiative. Sincere thanks to Jason and Aaron at Cleanskin forworking with us.

The Coffee Van launch date will be Monday 30th May 7.45am– 8.30am.

Open every Monday & Friday morning before school for ourAspley Special School community - staff, parents and busdrivers. Prices - Coffee $3 // Coffee & Breakfast Muffin $5

On a final note, I was pleased to be able to accompany theYr11’s on their camp last week at Bornhoffen PCYC in the GoldCoast hinterland. As a Chappy I find camps invaluable in myrole. They not only provide new and amazing experiences buta fantastic opportunity to support, encourage and connect withstudents and staff as they encounter community outside of theschool context and their normal environment. Bornhoffen wasundoubtedly a beautiful spot, and our camp group facilitatorswere professional, calm and inclusive of our special needsstudents. I came away from the three days inspired by theefforts of our students to try new experiences and challengethemselves. They worked collaboratively not only in their activitygroups, but in tasks around the campsite, washing up andcleaning. Great memories and good times. Thank you!

CheersTania PattemoreChaplain
