Notes from David on Youth and College Ministries:

We are still in search of one more college intern to help with UKirk and the High School Youth Ministry. The ideal candidate will be at least a Sophomore at WKU and have experi-ence in a PC(USA) church or have knowledge of reformed theology and a desire to work in a progressive Christian college ministry. Time commitment would be approximately 10 hours per week ($100 per week salaried).

WEAR ORANGE! On the 25

th of each month you are invited and encouraged to

wear Orange. Presbyterians have joined the ecumenical move-ment across the country and the world to raise awareness and to prevent violence directed toward women and girls. Use the Orange apparel to start a conversation about the plight of women and girls who within the family unit can be victims of physical, ver-bal, and emotional abuse. Women and girls throughout the world and here in the United States are victims of modern day slav-ery. It is suggested that 80 percent of individuals who are victims of trafficking are female and around 50 percent are children. According to news reports, Interstate 65 is a major transport route. DCE Search Update The search committee for a Director of Christian Education met on September 20th to begin review of applications. Committee members are Catherine Reber, Mike Kanan, Julia Roberts, Mary Evans, Sandy Franklin, Judy Whitson, and Nancy Hulan. Initial Skype interviews will be scheduled for those who meet our initial expectations, and any candidate who is consid-ered viable for the position and a good fit for our church will be invited for an in-person inter-view. This position is for a full-time educator, not an associ-ate pastor. The new DCE will be responsible for: management and oversight of the compre-hensive Christian Education program; development of an environment which encour-ages an enthusiastic, spirited, positive approach to Christian Education throughout the congregation, with special attention to families and children. The DCE will be accountable to the Senior Pastor as head of staff. The work of the DCE is overseen by the Session through its Personnel Ministry.

LIBRARY NEWS I thank you for the opportunity to serve as Church Librarian for the past five years. I am leaving that position, but will be glad to meet with anyone who accepts it, to share any information that will lead to a smooth transition. - Arnie Petrus

Presbyterian Women

PW Profile—Megan Algie

Megan Gammon Algie grew up in Nashville, TN., and attended Western Kentucky University, where she followed a pre-law cur-riculum that included majors in both English and History. While at Western, she met Nathan Algie and the two were wed in 2007, after Megan graduated. She then took an office job at Western while Nathan finished a master’s degree in folklore and historic preservation, graduating in 2008. Megan says of Na-than’s consequent job search that “ this was a time of an eco-nomic crash and it was not possible for Nathan to get any kind of job in his field, so he ended up accepting a very tenuous po-sition with the state of Pennsylvania working at the Daniel Boone Homestead.” The Algies’ time in Pennsylvania was difficult. Nathan’s job was on-again, off-again. Megan worked in the office of an ani-mal hospital, but was “ let-go “ when low blood pressure caused by her pregnancy caused dizziness, which in turn necessitated that she be allowed to sit while she did her work. Her employ-ers denied her request and terminated her. Financial problems continued and debts grew. Final-ly, Nathan called a former employer of his in Bowling Green, someone for whom he had worked while he was a student, and asked for a job, any job, just to get his family back to Bowling Green. “Absolutely,” he was told. “ Come home.” Megan and Nathan returned to Bowling Green one month before baby Nathan Cager Gammon Algie was born. They immediately joined The Presbyterian Church. “ It just felt right,” Megan says. Megan and Nathan had often visited The Presbyterian Church while they were at Western. Initially, Nathan had chosen TPC to study when he was given an assignment in one of his Folklore classes. “ I was raised Baptist, “ says Megan, “ and Nathan was raised Catholic. We considered each and discussed the dictates and expectations that would be put upon us. Finally, we chose Presbyterian and have never regretted it.” Cager was born in 2010 and little brother Eli Beckett Gammon Algie in 2012. Both have the names of saints. And each, Megan says, was ” in church in my arms at the age of one week.” Cager is in kindergarten at Potter Gray Elementary, and Eli is in 3-year old pre-school at TPC. Megan calls herself a “ stay-at-home Mom, ” but her involvement in TPC continues to grow. She is in her third year as a Deacon, a position she values as she feels called to serve oth-ers. Megan faithfully helps with the Saturday Meals program, serves on the Presbyterian Women Coordinating Team, serves on the Board of Directors of the PLC, and sings in the choir. She has also helped with The Girls’ Night Out socials and belongs to the Wednesday Morning Young Moth-ers and Others Circle. Megan has a passion for cooking that she learned from her grandmother and shares her reci-pes and experiences on Facebook at a page called, “Meg’s Kitchen.” She also practices yoga, tends a garden, makes homemade herbal teas, crochets, quilts, and sews. She loves helping people and animals, too. You may even see her on the side of the road rescuing stray dogs or pointing turtles toward healthier paths.

New Members

Getting to Know Our Newest Members of the Congregation —

JOANN PEARSON Joann Pearson was a member of our church in the late 80’s; however, she began travelling to Tennessee on the weekends to take her elderly mother to church thus drifting away from attendance and activities in this church. Her name was removed from the roll. When her mother passed away, Joann decid-ed she would like to reconnect with our church. She has now rejoined and, once again, feels a part of the congre-gation. Joann and her husband, B.J. have four grown children, three are in Tennessee, with one son here in Bowling Green. Joann and B.J. have a farm in Park City where B.J. cares for their quarter horses, chickens and domesticated rabbits, which they sell as pets. Joann is a nurse and works as a nurse/paralegal at ELPO law firm. Currently, one her favorite hobbies is decorative window painting. She purchases windows at the Habitat Restore, paints them, and then donates them back to Habitat Restore. Joann, also enjoys sewing, genealogy, crocheting, reading and cooking for her friends and family. Since rejoining our church, Joann has already been at work here! She has ushered and presented the Time With Young Disciples. She feels the more you are involved in your church, the more you get from it and looks forward to further participation.

SHIRLEY KARRICK Shirley Karrick has always been involved in a Christian community and was, in fact, an organist for many years at Franklin Presbyterian Church. She is retired today but continues as a substitute organist there from time to time.If the name, Karrick, sounds familiar to you it may be because Shirley’s late husband, Cecil Karrick, was the band director for the city school system here in Bowling Green for over 40 years. During this time, Shirley taught organ and piano. Shirley and Cecil have three children and seven grandchildren, the youngest, Katie, is 18 months. Their son has undergone treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and recently got the wonderful news of a clean scan! Shirley admits that it hasn’t been easy since losing Cecil a year and a half ago but finds enjoyment in her two Shelties, her cat and knitting what she calls, “magic socks,” for her grandchil-dren. In our church, she is already a member of Circle 6 and last year she was on the Cleanup Committee for Room at the Inn. A part of Shirley’s personal philosophy is acknowledging that the past can make you sad and the future can make you anxious and so she finds it’s best to live in the present!

LINDA JOHNSON Linda Johnson, married to our associate minister, Jim Johnson, is very familiar with Bowling Green, having grown up here attending the Methodist Church. Since marrying Jim, Linda has followed “her man” to several homes in Kentucky throughout his career and calling in the church. Linda shared that she has not always changed her church membership with each move but has happily done so here. The Johnsons plan for Bowling Green to be their permanent home- they really like us. The Johnsons have two grown sons, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Linda’s favorite sport is professional baseball, and they both enjoy watching football and basketball- and they have plenty to root for in Kentucky with her alma mater being WKU and his, UK. Linda also enjoys quilting and cross-stitching. Church member, Betty Jo Beard has already involved Linda in her church circle. As with all of our new members, we are so glad Linda has officially joined and we look forward to meeting her entire family!

BARBARA GRIDER Barbara Grider has been attending our church for over 20 years so you may have thought she was already a member. During this time she has been Mission Interpretation Coordinator for our church circles and moderator and treasurer for Circle 9. She’s married to John Grider, a retired CPA. They have 2 daughters and 2 granddaughters. Barbara is also active in the Bowling Green Garden Club and has been a member of several quilting clubs. She has materials and patterns for quilts she’s promised her granddaughters, but she hasn’t found time- yet. Barbara said she would like to be more involved in our Sunday School programs to learn more about the Bible.

BRIANNA TRICKEY Brianna Trickey is the daughter of Debbie Trickey. She grew up in Auburn and works in sales for Aflec. Her twin brother, in Franklin, is the father of two of her favorite people – Grayson, 4 years old and Layla 3 months old. She likes hanging out with friends, reading and playing with her dog, Parker. Brianna, like her mom, enjoys helping others. Together they have already started working on the community Thanksgiv-ing dinner in Russellville. Brianna heads the Saturday Meals program at our church. She lines up volunteers to assemble and deliver the meals. Last time it was our church's Saturday there were 285 meals delivered.

MATT HUNT Matthew "Matt" Hunt is a 2015 graduate of WKU. He majored in computer science and minored in Economics. Right out of college he landed a job in his major with Hills Pet Nutrition. Matt's volun-teered in our Youth Ministry for over two years. He also was a regular participant in our Theology Pub for over three years. He's a native of Lexington, KY and was raised in the faith at Second Presbyterian Church in Lexington. We welcome Matt as a full member!

TALIAFERRO WIATT Taliaferro Wiatt goes by the name Tolliver. Tolliver moved from Todd county to Bowl-ing Green to study Physics at Western Kentucky University. He plans to pursue a career in nuclear engineer-ing. This will mean leaving Bowling Green in a few years since WKU doesn’t offer that degree. Tolliver works at 440 Main where he especially likes making some of the more gourmet desserts such as Bananas Foster and the Crème Brulees. If there’s any time left in his busy schedule he also enjoys canoeing and kayaking. We first met Tolliver when he made several anonymous donations to our church food bank. He still makes generous donations of food, but prefers little recognition. We feel very blessed to have Tolliver in our church home.

WAYNE and BETH POPE Wayne and Beth Pope met when they were students at Murray State University, but they feel a kinship to many places. Their daughter, Caitlin, was born in New Orleans while Wayne was work-ing on his Masters Degree. Their son, Will, was born in Little Rock before they moved to South Carolina for Wayne to pursue his Doctorate. They have lived in Bowling Green for the past 17 years, since Wayne took a position at WKU Wayne is a professor and Beth is an adjunct teacher of voice at Western Kentucky Universi-ty. They both teach voice and enjoy working with opera, jazz and WKU musical productions. They’re very proud of their children, who also degrees in music and have pursued musical careers. Caitlin is in Nashville and works in classical music. Will performs in productions on the Oceania Cruise Line. Lola, the dog they inherited from Caitlin when she left for college, lives up to her name – “whatever Lola wants, Lola gets”. Wayne says their family is made up of Music Junkies. The Popes came to us form Living Hope Baptist Church, where Wayne was choir director. Now we enjoy their musical talent and Wayne is our choir Director.

WEST SIDE CAMP Note: We can never know how good deeds might impact others, even many

years following the deed. Little Rock Church, Delafield, sought through church school and summer vaca-tion bible school to bring youth and adults into the way of Christ. Ches Johnson, along with many other “downtown church” volunteers, conducted a vibrant program. The following recollection by one of those youth will attest to the goodness of the work:

WEST SIDE CAMP began as a suggestion during annual Mattie Whitlock/White family Thanksgiving Dinner in 2006. While discussing wanting to have a camp for children, brothers Ron, Leslie, Arlie and Law-rence began to talk about how Mr. Chess Johnson and the Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green, KY came to The Little Rock Presbyterian Church in the Delafield area and picked up children and took them to his farm in Hadley. This kept kids off the streets and out of trouble. Over the years a camp developed and became more structured. Mrs. Mattie Whitlock/White was grateful for her kids having a place to go in the summer. Mrs. White was so appreciative for the work Mr. Chess Johnson and The Presbyterian Church did she told her sons that she always wanted to pay this back. A meeting was scheduled and West Side Camp was born. The original board members were Lawrence White, Chairman; Ron Whitlock, Vice Chairman; Arlie White, Treasure; Barry Prude, Secretary; Danny Carothers, Public Relations; Billy Watkins Sergeant- at- Arms. Now Lawrence White and Arlie White have moved on and we now have Ron Whitlock as Chairman, Barry Prude, Secretary/Treasurer, Danny Caroth-ers, Public Relations and Mike Pillow, Sergeant at Arms. West Side Camp Incorporated is a non-profit 501c3 non-stock corporation registered with the State of Kentucky and the IRS. Our mailing address is 550 Claypool Boyce Rd. Alvaton, KY 42122-8733. West Side Camp hosted its first camp in 2007 with 47 boys attending. In 2008, 57 boys attended the camp. In 2009, girls were incorporated into the camp. During this time 84 boys attended the camp and the

following week 37 girls attended with women as camp leaders and workers. West Side Camp continues to have camps and partici-pates in numerous activates in our community. The purpose of West Side Camp is to use an outdoor environ-ment for developing positive traits, focusing primarily on adoles-cents and youth from the west side of Bowling Green, Kentucky, but not limited to this area. We strive to make a difference by developing self-reliance skills, leadership qualities, and defining their talents. We promote an unselfish attitude and give the youth an opportunity to work with other youth to accomplish certain task while developing new relationships and having fun.

Deacons’ Report

Financial Report

From September 1 Deacons’ meeting:

A joint meeting was held between the two committees to begin to develop a plan that will help be more intentional in our contacts with new members, members in need communicating our love for our church family. In the pantry, there has been a recent increase in people seeking help, however food donations have been down. Debbie will talk to Matthew about bringing a basket of food to the altar on the first Sunday of the month to provide a visual reminder. Saturday Meals: Brianna Trickey will be coordinating. Living Waters: The water building at St. Margaret’s is almost complete. A trip is planned around the first of December, to sign the covenant and wrap up before the install of the water system. Peacemaking: Susan Thomison is temporarily heading up this committee. John Van Ness is coordi-nating the Bridge Ministry. Marcheta White is taking orders for coffee. Ann Humphrey and Tom Moody will be placing the orders. Room in the Inn (RITI) will now be run through the Deacons. There will be a need to have someone to be the contact for Hotel Inc. Simple Gifts will be reworked after RITI is set up. Kim reported that work is already starting for the Angel Tree. This will be the tenth year the church has been involved with the program. Last year we helped 28 families with gifts and a box of food. Churches United in Christ Ministry- consists of the 5 downtown churches and gives assistance with utilities. Year to date this Ministry has a short fall of $2500. It was requested to ask session if this be made known to the congregation, so that those who would like to make a special donation could do so. Endowment Committee - The committee met and took steps to be slightly more aggressive with our investments. Finance Committee- Receipts are favorable against expenses. Hotel Inc. Utilities are running YTD about $1000 dollars above plan. Deacons discretionary fund has $750 left for the year. Judy made a motion that the Deacons affirm that monies donated to the church for the Deacons Discretionary Fund be used as the Deacons direct them for the financial support of church members needs. Ginger seconded the motion. Motion was passed. Special care has suggested that a person be assigned to the Tenth Street Door to assist those who may need assistance getting into the church. They also suggested looking at making an area that would be designated as a drop off area.

Session Report

Session Report -- September 15, 2015

Session business this month focused on the development of the college ministry, the establishment of a Discernment Team, fellowship activities, and progress on finding a Director of Christian Education.

UKIRK is off and running with volunteer interns while a hiring process begins for staff interns to be paid from $30,000 in a restricted account for college ministry. UKIRK meets in Room 207 at the church on Wednesday nights at 8:15.

A Discernment Team has been formed to determine a church vision. The members of the team are Charles Reid, Gary Ahrendt, Karol Ahmed, Sheila Reaves, and Rev. Jim Johnson. They are to report to session in January and to the congregation in Febru-ary. They have a broad commission to use all resources available and to keep person-al conversations confidential. Session chose Sunday, September 11 as the commis-sion date.

The fellowship committee has people organized for set and clean up and is moving for-ward on fellowship activities. The first event will be a trip to Keeneland on October 17, organized by Bobby Rabold.

The primary activity of the Education Committee has been the beginning of Fall Sun-day School, organizing of Advent educational events, and searching for a Director of Christian Education. The DCE search committee has reached the stage of reviewing applications.

It’s always good to receive a positive financial report: Expenses are down; receipts are up. Actual Expenses for August, 2015 were $376,536 vs. a budgeted $385,605. Total receipts from January to August 2015 are $411,104 vs total expenses of $376,536, giving a favorable balance of $34,568.

Building maintenance continues with bids for prepping and painting the metal fence around the church and repainting the front door.

God blesses us with devoted leaders and workers and guides us through His pathways. Praise be the Lord.

“Our reason for being is to manifest

the good news of Jesus Christ in word

and deed so that disciples are made by

means of inspiring and engaging worship,

relevant and reliable education,

compassionate and caring fellowship,

meaningful and magnanimous outreach,

to the glory of God.”
