The Preparation Outline A detailed outline used to plan a speech Guidelines:
– Include the specific purpose statement & central idea
– Label the introduction, body, and conclusion– Have a consistent pattern of symbolization &
indentation– State main points and subpoints in full sentences– Label transitions, internal summaries, & internal
previews– Include a bibliography– A title is recommended, but not required
The Speaking Outline
A brief outline used to deliver a speech The primary purpose is to help the
speaker remember what to say– It includes key words/phrases– It includes essential statistics & quotations– It includes cues to direct and sharpen the
speaker’s delivery Is used for extemporaneous speeches
Guidelines for Speaking Outlines
Follow the same visual framework used in the preparation outline
Make it plainly legible– (it must be readable at a distance)
Make it as brief as possible Include cues for delivering the speech
– (e.g., ‘slow down’, ‘pause’, ‘louder’)
