TTHEHE PPRESIDENTRESIDENT’’SS MMESSAGEESSAGE

By Bill Simpson

Hopefully everyone has survived (and

maybe even profited from) the

summer heat. As September

approaches, it is time to kickoff

another ASHRAE year. Your Arkansas

ASHRAE leadership has already been

planning and preparing to build on

the successes of our historically

strong chapter.

You may have noticed society

President Ron Jarnagin’s theme for

the year on the cover of the August

Journal—“Sustaining ASHRAE Through

Leadership”. In an effort to promote

President Jarnagin’s theme and deliver

value to our membership,

the officers are in the

process of arranging a

series of leadership

training sessions to be

made available to all of the

chapter members.

Also, chapter President-

Elect and CTTC chair Mike

Fullerton is finalizing a

value-packed program schedule for us

this year once again highlighted by

distinguished lecturers and society

dignitaries. This month’s meeting is

on bio-renewable fuels as presented

by local engineer Tim Gorman of

Viridian.

Forrest Moseley has done an excellent

job with student activities over the

last couple years and is poised for

another successful year. Last year he

was able to enlist two new student

branches at UALR and ASU. This year

the student activities committee’s

efforts will include getting those new

student branches engaged in our

chapter. Society has also bestowed

honors on dedicated student branch

advisors Darin Nutter (U of A) and

Wayne Helmer (ATU). We look

forward to honoring them locally as

well for their service. On the K-12

front, Forrest is always looking for

volunteers, so please let him know if

you’re interested in helping.

In an effort to develop a strong

network for our younger members,

Caleb Haynes has already planned

monthly Young Engineer’s in ASHRAE

(YEA) activities. The first event is a

Monday Night Football watch party on

September 12th

. Look for upcoming

announcements for future events

including paintball, “fluid seminars”,

trap shoots and more. Another great

opportunity for YEA members is the

leadership weekend in Atlanta

September 30th

-October 2nd

.

If you’re interested, our

chapter subsidizes the cost

but you’ll need to sign up

soon as space is limited.

And even though we’re just

kicking off this season, it’s

never too early to mention

CRC. Those who attended

this past April in Dallas not

only had a good time socializing with

professionals around our region but

also learned about how to serve our

chapter and society better and came

back enthusiastic to do so. I hope all

who are able will plan to attend next

April in Tulsa.

Finally, it’s an exciting time in our

state as Arkansas looks to adopt the

2009 IECC and ASHRAE 90.1-2007.

The building professionals will be

looking to ASHRAE members for

answers on how to meet the more

stringent energy conservation

requirements. Take advantage of the

continuing education and networking

opportunities our chapter offers

locally or society offers electronically

to meet the needs of our market.

Look forward to seeing everybody at

the meetings next week.

SSTUDENTTUDENT AACTIVITIESCTIVITIES

Forrest Moseley—Chair

We look forward to another great year with

Arkansas ASHRAE Student Activities. We are

excited about the addition of Arkansas State

University (Jonesboro) as a new student

ASHRAE Chapter at the end of last year. We

will be acknowledging accomplishments of a

couple student advisors in upcoming

meetings along with an announcement of an

ASHRAE high school student scholarship. We

expect increased ASHRAE involvement with K-

12 students by adding a committee chair that

will only focus on the K-12 group. In efforts

to keep all of our university students

connected to ASHRAE, we are looking into the

establishment of an Arkansas ASHRAE

Student Activities Facebook page. We are

hopeful that with these updates and additions

to the student activities committee that we

will have a very successful year.
