The very next day, Birbal went to the court with a poor man who agreed to do

anything for a reward. The emperor then ordered the poor man to stand inside a

pond for the entire night.

The poor man agreed to do as the emperor asked. He stood in the pond all night

long, shivering. The next day when he returned to the court to take his reward,

Emperor Akbar asked him how he performed the difficult task.

The poor man said that he could do it because he saw a dim glowing light far

away and kept himself alive by thinking of the warmth of the ray of light.

Emperor Akbar refused to give him the reward saying that he had cheated by

getting warmth from the light. Birbal found this unjust but could not convince

the emperor and the poor man returned home sadly.

Then, Birbal did not come to the court for few days but sent a messenger to the

emperor saying that he would come to the court only after cooking his khichdi.

As Birbal did not turn up even after five days, the emperor himself went to his

house to investigate.

He found Birbal cooking khichdi by placing the pot at a height above a small

fire. He laughed at Birbal and said how he expected the khichdi to get cooked

with the fire so far away. Birbal replied that if it was possible for the poor man

to receive the warmth from the light that was a distance away, in the same way

his khichdi would get cooked too.
