VPMA has always relied on “word of mouth” to get new members. This word of mouth takes the form of direct invitations from a member to a non-member, or a non-member hearing about some education program or benefit offered by VPMA, NPMA or one of our local associations.

We are asking each of our members, active, allied and associate, to make the effort NOW to reach out to at least one non-member and invite them to join the three-tiered association: VPMA, NPMA and the local association.

Chancellor’s GreenRene Perez, Woodbridge, VA

VPMA members - Know a company that would enjoy the benefits of membership? If so, please invite them to join. See cover story for details. Our own members are our best ambas-sadors! If a new member lists you as referring them on their mem-bership application you will receive a $50 voucher for any VPMA education program. New members will also receive a voucher for 1/2 off any VPMA eductional program. An applica-tion is on the back page - pass it on to a non-member.

I am stepping in to write this message so that Jeff John-son, our President, can con-centrate on following doctor’s orders and recovering from his ongoing treatments. Please keep him and his family in your prayers as he continues his jour-ney to wellness!

July 1 marks the dawn of a new pesticide regulatory age in Virginia. July 1 is the effective date of Governor McDonnell’s 2012 Executive Reorganization Plan that merges the Pesticide Control Board with the Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Since 1989, every ap-plication of pesticide in Virginia has been subject to the over-sight of the Pesticide Control Board as authorized by the Virginia Pesticide Act.

In the 23 years since its passage, the Pesticide Control Act has affected our industry as a whole, in a most positive and uplifting way. Certainly the law exists. But the words of the Act printed on paper, have not acted alone to affect change in our industry. It is the living, breath-ing humans that have been charged with the interpretation and enforcement of the Act that have been the catalysts for posi-tive change in the pest manage-ment industry in Virginia.

Specifically, I refer to the members of the Pesticide Control Board and the staff at VDACS Office of Pesticide Ser-

vices. While the people on the governing board will change, the staff of VDACS-OPS will not. After working with many of the people of VDACS-OPS for more than a decade, I have always known them to exhibit professionalism and possess knowledge of pertinent issues as well as an understanding of how issues affect our industry. I am confident that this will not change.

During the winter General Assembly Session, VPMA’s Legal & Legislative Committee worked diligently on the pro-posed merger of these boards. We were able to secure two additional seats on the Board for Agriculture and Consumer Services, one for a structural commercial pesticide applicator and one for someone engaged in the commercial sale or applica-tion of agricultural pesticides. VPMA has strongly supported the appointment of Joe Wilson, CEO, PermaTreat to the struc-tural commercial applicator seat. Joe has been a member of the Pesticide Control Board since its inception in 1989 and has provided a vital link for that board to information about the industry.

While we do not know at the time of this printing, who the Governor will appoint to this board, we are hopeful that he will take the Association’s recommendation very seriously.

One final thought. Some people may think that this change in regulatory oversight will affect a change in how pes-ticide laws are interpreted and enforced. I do not believe that will happen. I do however be-lieve that this is an opportunity for every member of this indus-try to renew their dedication to upholding the highest ethical standards of business practices and environmental stewardship moving forward into this next regulatory age.

continued from cover

management firms throughout Virginia and across the country. That is why BASF has made this commitment to pay NPMA dues for any new member com-pany in the 2012 -13 member-ship year.”

To make it more attrac-tive to new members, VPMA is renewing our offer to pro-vide each new member com-pany with a “1/2 off Education Voucher”. Valued at up to $100, this voucher allows a new mem-ber company to attend a VPMA education program of their choice (State Technical Meet-ing, Master Technician, ACE Prep Course, WDI Inspector

Certification or WDI Inspector Recertification) at half off the published cost of registration.

This all sounds great for new members, but what is in it for our loyal, long standing members? One of the benefits of bringing in new members to the associations is it lends strength to the voice of the pest management industry statewide and nationally! This is an im-portant, yet intangible benefit.

A further benefit to your bottom line is a “Member Ap-preciation Education Voucher” worth $50 off one registration to any of the educational programs that VPMA offers. While these vouchers cannot be combined, you can earn multiple vouchers that can be used for each regis-

tration from your company. Finally, each time you refer

a new member to the associa-tions between now and Sep-tember 15, you will be entered into a drawing for a free, full registration to the 2012 State Technical Meeting being held in Richmond Oct. 3 – 4, 2012.

To take advantage of these outreach rewards, please have the non-member company that you are recruiting place your company name on the “Referred by:” line. And, once you’ve reached out to a new company, the executive staff is happy to follow up with a phone call to provide more information and answer any questions, so be sure to give the new member com-pany our contact information.

You probably engage in several marketing methods but it seems like every day, there’s another new “hot” way to mar-ket. My take on marketing is that it is a CONTACT sport, i.e. nothing happens until someone gets a message from you. The question is: what is the most effective method of sending that message that produces the high-est return on investment (ROI)? The answer: there isn’t just ONE method that will serve all purposes. Rather, like integrated pest management where you use a variety of tools and methods to get the job done, integrated marketing is the key to success. Let’s take a look at three totally different ways to contact your customers. (Look for lots more ideas in my presentation at the VPMA State Technical Meeting in October!)

1) E-letter (to current customers)

Many companies budget large amounts of money to get new customers, but do very little to keep in touch with cur-rent customers who can pro-vide valuable referrals. Since many companies offer quarterly service, they don’t have con-tact with their customers on a regular basis so an e-mailed newsletter serves as a touch be-tween services. The content and logistical possibilities are nearly endless. Content ideas for each e-letter could include: a) a bug article; b) note from President; c) humor column; d) pest pre-

Marketing, a Contact SportBy June Van Klaveren, Compelling Communications

vention tips. A good program to use to create and distribute your e-letter is www.YMLP.com. Email me ([email protected]) if you’d like a sample of the e-letter we create for All-Pro Pest Services.

2) NetworkingThis is the one area that I

believe many pest control com-panies are lacking – for several good reasons: a) it takes time; b) it costs money; c) it requires follow-up. But if you have someone in your company who is outgoing and loves to net-work (including following up), why not assign that person to a networking group. BNI is espe-cially successful for pest control companies. (www.BNI.com)

3) Social MediaThere are several options

for social media. For companies trying to grow their commercial business, I recommend LinkedIn

(www.linkedin.com) because it is more business oriented. For companies that serve primarily residential accounts, Facebook (www.facebook.com) or Pinter-est (www.pinterest.com) are two of the best. Pinterest is the newest entry into the social me-dia fray, because it appeals to women and has great possibili-ties for pest control companies.

Whatever marketing meth-od you use, assign it to someone within your organization who will be diligent and attentive to your company’s marketing ef-forts. Or if you have no one on staff who can take care of this, outsource to a company who specializes in marketing!

State Technical Meeting Speaker, Sneak Peak...Meet June VanKlaveren

While working for Whitmire Micro-Gen for over 25 years, June used to daydream of starting a company where she could be of service to pest control companies helping them improve their image, market their services and grow their businesses. So in 1997, she took the leap and established Compelling Commu-nications where she continues to do just that.

She is the author of The Edge Up – a customer service book for small and home-based businesses – and is an editorial contributor to PCT Magazine, and several state pest control as-sociation publications.

Be sure to bring your marketing questions to the State Technical Meeting where June will tell us more about best ways to contact your customers and prospects.

Got Pesticides You Need to Get Rid Of?

By Jeffrey Rogers, Environmental ProgramPlanner, Office of Pesticide Services, Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services

The proper disposal of waste pesticides eliminates a potential threat to health and the environment, however, disposal of these canceled, banned or unwanted agricultural and com-mercial pesticides can pose a significant challenge to agricul-tural producers and other pesti-cide users due to its high cost.

To continue to assist pesticide users with the proper disposal of unwanted agricul-

tural and commercial pesti-cides, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) will again be conducting its Pesticide Disposal Program in 2012. Since its in-ception, Virginia’s Pesticide Dis-posal Program has collected and destroyed a total of 1,146,495 pounds of pesticides!

So, how does it work? Vir-ginia is subdivided into 5 regions (see top right):

A pesticide disposal pro-gram is con-ducted annu-ally in localities within one of the regions. Once all 5 regions have been served, the program will start another cycle.

The Pro-gram is open to agricultural producers, li-censed pesticide dealers, licensed pest control firms, homeown-ers and golf courses located in the region being served in any given year. There is no cost to participate.

The program is fully funded from product registration, applicator certification and business license fees.

For 2012, the pesticide disposal program will be available in counties located in south central Virginia (see list on facing page). In 2013 counties in southwest Virginia will be serviced.

Participants are required to transport their unwanted pesticides to central collec-tion sites located within the service area. If a participant cannot safely containerize the unwanted pesticides for trans-port, the disposal contractor will make arrangements to containerize the pesticides for transport.

Please note, only un-wanted pesticides will be accepted. Pesticide contami-nated material (for example, pesticide contaminated fer-tilizer) will not be accepted as part of the Department’s Pesticide Disposal Program.

Please do not hesitate to contact this Office should you have any questions con-cerning acceptable material.

an honor earned by technicians that recognizes their years of experience and accumulated knowledge. It sets them apart as an elite group of pest man-agement problem solvers,” shares VPMA President, Jeff Johnson, ACE. Jeff earned his ACE in July 2010 and made it his priority as he began his term as VPMA President to double the number of ACEs in Vir-ginia. During his two year term VPMA has helped 16 PMPs earn their ACE designations

through the VPMA Prep Course and proctored exams, far sur-passing his goal!

The ACE program is designed to benefit the practic-ing pest control professional. You do not need an advanced degree to participate, just a solid grasp of the practical aspects of applied entomology. To be eligible to apply for the ACE program, you must hold a current pesticide applicators’ license issued in the U.S., have a minimum of 7 years of verifi-able pest management experi-ence, and must take and pass

Created in 2004, the ACE program is currently undergoing a review to ensure that the con-tent of the ACE exam is up-to-date so that it matches the actual knowledge required for certified pest management professionals to perform effectively.

Two representatives from the Entomological Society of America, Chris Stelzig, Direc-tor of Certification and Richard Levine, Communications Pro-gram Manager, attended the VPMA Prep Course to discover how they can effectively promote and support ACE prep courses

ACEcontinued from page 10... around the nation. While self-

study is vital to becoming an ACE, prep courses provide clarification and reinforcement of the information that may be present on the exam.

ESA would like to see other state associations, univer-sities and industry organizations follow VPMA’s lead and create ACE Prep courses of their own. Of the VPMA Prep Course, Chris Stelzig said, “The VPMA should be justifiably proud of the excellent ACE Preparatory Course they hosted in Rich-mond last month. The speakers did a great job of ensuring that the PMPs in attendance were well-prepared for the ACE exam the following day.”

If you want to become an

ACE, VPMA plans on holding an ACE Prep Course and will proctor an exam each spring. The VPMA Prep Course, taught by Dr. Dini Miller of Virginia Tech and Jim Fredericks of NPMA, will review each of the elements that may be covered on the exam.

VPMA recommends indi-viduals begin self-study approxi-mately 6 months before taking the ACE exam. The VPMA Prep course can be a good way to kick-off your preparation, but is usually taken as a final refresher just prior to taking the exam. In-dividuals must make application to ESA 30 days prior to taking the exam.

For more information about the ACE Certification Program go to: http://www.entocert.org .

The future of outdoor pest management is here with new Suspend PolyZone. PolyZone uses a proprietary polymer layer, which ensures that more active ingredient remains available to target pests over a longer period of time. It also stays right where you put it, protecting* from weather, irrigation and mechanical interference.

All of which adds up to a 90-DAY OUTDOOR RESIDUAL. So if you want to extend your time between applications, put the science of PolyZone to work for you.

State Technical Meeting: What’s in it for you?

The VPMA Education Committee has been working hard since December to develop yet another State Technical Meeting that can be heralded nationally as one of the most valuable meetings in pest man-agement education! The 2012 VPMA State Technical Meeting (STM) is scheduled for October 3 – 4 and will be hosted again at the Sheraton Park South in Richmond.

For those of you who have benefitted from the value packed into this meeting, I know we will see you again in 2012!

What will convince those

of you who haven’t participated in the STM to give it a try this year?

Julie Oakley, Secretary with Mares Exterminating was a first time STM attendee in 2011. Julie says, “This was my first time at a State Technical Meet-ing. I just want to say Great Job on the entire event. I learned a lot and gained some important information.” Thanks for help-ing us spread the word, Julie!

Need a little more incen-tive to give STM a try? First time attendees can take $20 off a full (two day) registration and $10 off any single day (Business

or Technical) registration. So you might ask, what

does the STM agenda aim to help you accomplish?

STM helps your company build a more efficient and profitable business.

Ray Johnson, NPMA past president and president of Johnson Pest Control in Sevier-ville, TN will speak to the STM on the use of iPads in the sales force.

Kim Oakley, Risk Man-ager at Massey Services, Inc. in Orlando, FL will address human resources and hiring practices.

VPMA has converted the VPMA WDI Recertification Workshop to an online learning opportunity. The online pro-gram, consisting of four mod-ules, can be completed in less than 2 hours.

Moving to an electronic format allows VPMA Certified WDI Inspectors to earn recer-tification credits to maintain their voluntary WDI certifica-tion without having to travel to a workshop site. Available 24/7, the online program allows tech-nicians to take the course at a time that is most convenient for them, so there is less interrup-tion to service routes and office routines. The program does not have to be completed in one sit-ting, allowing the technician to spread their training over time, if needed.

While it does not confer VPMA Certified WDI Inspector status, the program can also be used as a general training tool. The program covers identifi-cation and biology of wood destroying insects, the inspec-tion process, inspection tools and safety and how to com-plete the NPMA-33 form. The general training version of the program, VPMA WDI Inspec-tion Basics, will be available on VPMAonline.com, as well as on npmapestworld.org.

VPMA Certified WDI Inspectors needing recertifica-tion credits will receive a letter with instructions on how to access the online training. It is important that each of the four modules and the quiz questions be completed. After successfully completing the program, PMPs

VPMA WDI Inspector Recert Online!will be able to print a Certification of Completion. VPMA will also be notified at the same time and will automati-cally generate a new badge to the PMP after verification of employment and VDACS licensure.

Because of the delay in launching the online program, VPMA has extended the expira-tion date of any VPMA WDI In-spector who was due to expire on June 30, 2010, 2011 or 2012 until September 30, 2012. If you are unsure about your expiration date, please call VPMA at 877/875-8722.

To become a VPMA Certi-fied WDI Inspector, PMPs must attend a full-day, in person VPMA WDI Inspector Workshop, meet the minimum certification require-ments and pass an exam. Visit VPMAonline.com for details.
