ii GENERAL SUMMARY OF THE PLAY- Plastosphere.

Imagine the current rate of plastic littering, hydrocarbon emissions, industrial discharges, sound pollution and human artificiality. Plastosphere is a speculation on all these activities and their consequences on generations to come.

The play starts by expressing the formation of an artificial island called Plastosphere. Littered plastics, and worn out gadgets are ferried in a flood and accumulated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean to form this human habitation. This takes place in 2035, where people die in this flood, and some are saved by the floating objects in the ocean. Owing to the ingenuity of the survivors, this area is made livable with most of the occupants exploring the entire world to become prosperous billionaires who challenge nature, projecting robot effort over human effort. They ease life and accumulate huge fortunes. Life rests in the hands of machines and robots; women are even relieved from bearing pregnancy for nine months with the invention of the ‘gestation machine’.

Ingenuity for profit and ease at the expense of the environment is represented by Pete, Teqno, and partners, who constantly thwart the efforts of neo -naturalists as Bob Ecolo, Vegeta, Philo and followers in conserving biodiversity.

The consequences of pollution in various forms and abusive artificiality don’t delay to start manifesting: the laziness of ease and GMO consumption render Gastro, a son to Pete, obese; sound pollution causes a gadget and noise adept, Suzy-Maquillo, to start speaking like the machines with an omission of determiners in her speech; acid rain increases threats of health hazards. The huge gas emissions from burning of hydrocarbon substances accumulate in the atmosphere and condense to a sooty rainfall as the whole earth’s surface experiences a black out. After days of darkness, due to this color of the atmosphere, Plastospherans have no choice than to come back to nature through a forced pilgrimage, qualified here as the ‘Great Staggering’. They fall back to reality in the land of Frica. Bob Ecolo and father, who have been conserving virgin forests as shrines, receive many of the people from this island. They introduce them to nature building projects like rehabilitating polluted lands, agroforestry, and ecotourism as sources of income.

The extortionists from nature, Pete and Teqno get jealous of Bob’s progress in the business of ecotourism and control a robot with explosives to burn down a virgin forest. This area, being a shrine under Bob’s care, the Ndzondzene Park, has been eyed by tourists and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Pete and co are tried, found guilty, and punished to clean a garbage heap by a child who presides as the judge. The right to inheritance of Pete’s empire goes to his son, Gastro, assigned the task of using the fortunes of his father to clean the oceans and encourage sustainable development.

The family of Pete meditates, in a flashback, on the events that lead to the creation of this island. The children ask to know about the Great Flood; how the plastics and tree trunks that float to save 4000 people in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, contribute in the creation of Plastosphere. Two factions are perceptible in the family: those who pride in human ingenuity and see no reason to stop deforming nature for profit – Pete, Teqno; those who call for caution in the human activities, especially plastic disposal and scientific inventions: Philo, Gastro.

SUMMARY OF ACT 1

Plastosphere, an imaginary island is born from the accumulation of plastics littered on the earth’s surface and heaped in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean by a flood in 2035. Pete and the 4000 survivors of the flood do the compacting to form a world appreciated by his offspring, especially Teqno, Two of his children, Philo and Gastro, are fed up with the very artificial world and relish a more natural company in their in-law, Bob Ecolo and family. An initiative by Pete’s company brings some botany students from Frica to Plastosphere, led by Bob. He tries to plant flowers and shrubs in containers filled with soil, in a totally artificial world. The concept of this environmentally friendly project is done by the company for the purpose of gaining favor in the eyes of environmentalists.

The brilliant performance of Bob in this island makes his products to be so admired by Philo, that she falls in love with him and they get married to the disappointment of her father. Teqno on his part clings to Suzy-Maquillo who shares his machine-bound passions.

Technology is seen to be so advanced that the pains of nine months’ pregnancy and labor are borne by a gestation machine; Teqno and wife are already using it. This causes alarm among people like Bob’s family who wonder how children from such a machine will behave.

Bob on his part does not do badly in business, since his project of conserving age-old trees appeals to tourists around the world who are ready to spend millions in support of his scheme. Teqno, who prophesies poverty for him is surprised at his abode and business strides.

Suzy-Maquillo, plunged in deafening music and served by a myriad of robots gets the result of an automated speech, void of determiners and only finds a solution in the quiet natural environment of Frica. The hospitality of Fricans is sharply contrasted with the nonchalant attitude of the Plastospherans, involved in money-making projects. Also, all human beings are subject to diseases because of these industrial discharges into the atmosphere. The result is acid rain that affects everybody. These mishaps caused by human greed are crowned by the black rainfall that hits Frica and Plastosphere. Plastospherans finally consider their world uninhabitable and stagger to Frica for refuge.

The first revival project by Pete’s company is to rehabilitate land used for depositing nuclear and industrial wastes. This is a forest area transformed to a barren land where biodiversity has been completely effaced. As Bob projects, only the robots and machines can go to risk the planting of economic trees on the land. Soil has to be imported and filled in holes dug by remote controlled bulldozers and mechanical shovels. Pete has no choice because his wife, Lucie is putting him under pressure to realize nature-friendly projects.

Summary of Act 3 The first wave of Plastospherans reaches the coast of Frica and is welcomed by Bob Ecolo and other Fricans. They come to the reality of a world where worship of God, architecture and educational facilities try as much as possible to drift away from artificiality and stick to nature. Neo-naturalists like the Bob Ecolos and Vegeta caution them against implementing such artificial practices that would lead to another phenomenon as nasty as the black rain. All the people, a little above five hundred thousand, are settled after a lot of efforts around the world. Pete’s wife pressurizes him to resort to ecotourism and do a great deal in transforming the world to a natural haven. Parks have to be multiplied, natural shrines have to be increased, and recycling of plastics has to be mandatory. Bob works with him to establish these natural havens, yet receives a lot of criticism for still having an edge over them in touristic attraction. The rivalry is worsened with the choice of Pete’s son, Gastro, to become a forest guard under Bob Ecolo. Father denounces son for this and schemes with Teqno, his ardent supporter in environmental waywardness for profit, to destroy Bob Ecolo’s most booming park, the Ndzondzene park. Using a remote-controlled incendiary robot, Teqno and friends partially burn this park on a Christmas evening, when many tourists are celebrating. Thanks to the increase of water cannons supplied from nineteen bore holes around the park, the fire is put out with some damages registered. Teqno pretentiously pays a visit to Bob Ecolo’s house the next day, and is not welcomed. His pretense is on Christmas season routine to visit family members, and to extend their mother’s greetings to Bob Ecolo’s family. Grastro not only suspects but accuses his brother and father for this scheme to burn the park. Teqno ignores them and slips to the park unnoticed.

Teqno visits the Bobs in pretense to slip to the Ndzondzene premises and verify if the burnings are thorough. He sees some destruction and admires it. A burnt branch is broken by the wind and drops on his head. In a fit of confusion, Gastro conveys him to the hospital. Teqno’s partners and father lament over this incident and see it as another victory for Bob Ecolo. He is attended to by a highly skilled medical staff, assisted by robots. A case file is opened in court against the culprit of the Ndzondzene fire incident with a hearing largely to the favor of Pete and co, owing to the skillful defense of the company’s lawyers.

After the court hearing, Teqno spends a very difficult night having excruciating pains, assisted by his mother and wife. Bob does not relent paying several visits to see into his treatment. His father on the other hand has no interest in passing to examine his progress. These pains continue when Pete visits the hospital. The patient starts making implicating pronouncements against their own company. Pete in the height of guilt cooks up a plot with his friends to kill Teqno. They seek alliance with the UNESCO Regional Representative who misfires and struggles to corrupt the nurse robot attending to Teqno using a virus put in a microchip. Gastro is smart to view it and when the patient deteriorates with an excess morphine dose, this expatriate to no avail ends up guilty. A child, playing the role of a judge sentences Pete and his friends to three years imprisonment on a garbage heap with their prime role to rid it of plastic wastes. His son, Gastro and mum Lucie are to take charge of projects worth a hundred billion dollars on sustainable development and recycling plastic wastes.
