Florence was originally established as a railroad hub in the mid-1800s, first because of the Great Pee Dee River, then because it was the intersection of three major rail lines.

During the Revolutionary War, General Francis Marion - known as the “Swamp Fox” - commanded a force of mostly volunteer citizens, called militia, who fought in the eastern part of South Carolina. He was known for his surprise attacks near rivers such as the Great Pee Dee - attacks that made it difficult for the British to move men and supplies. Today, there are many landmarks in the Pee Dee that pay respect to General Marion, including Florence’s Francis Marion University. Additional historic sites in Florence include the Florence National Cemetery, established in 1865. The first woman to be buried in a National Cemetery, Florena Budwin, was interred here.

Florence then

Florence nowThe Florence County Museum houses a changing art gallery and Pee Dee history gallery. There is also a permanent collection featuring artwork by Florence native William H. Johnson.

Francis Marion University is named in honor of South Carolina’s Revolutionary War hero, General Francis “Swamp Fox” Marion. The beautiful campus features a nature trail, planetarium/observatory, and two preserved hewn-timber cabins.

Lynches River County Park features a river swamp with towering cypress trees as well as sand hills offering a wide variety of vegetation. Popular activities include river fishing, canoeing, nature trails, and picnicking. There is also a splash pad for the kids open during summer, and an Environmental Discovery Center.

The Florence Veterans Park pays homage to those who are serving or have served in our armed services with a “Wall of Honor” and several monuments for the wars of the 20th century. Fresh fruits and vegetables are available year-round at the Pee Dee State Farmers Market. Equally enticing is Young Plantations, where you can sample delicious pecans and purchase gifts for your friends back home or a treat for yourself.

Downtown Florence

The resurgence of Downtown Florence continues unabated, with new gathering spots opening up and entrepreneurs jumping on the progress bandwagon.

The South Carolina Pecan Festival held in early November downtown is now a major event for South Carolina. The 2017 festival, hosted by the Florence Downtown Development Corporation and the City of Florence, drew more than 50,000 people. The festival includes live entertainment, over 250 food & craft vendors, a free kids zone, amusement rides, a car show competition, cook-off competition, three footraces, a bike race, and much more!

The same organizations host Florence After 5 the last Friday of each month from April to October. The popular event on S. Dargan Street features live music and provides a fantastic opportunity to check out merchants downtown.

Also on Saturdays year-round is the City Center Farmers’ Market at 369 W. Cheves St. from 9am to 1pm.Featuring Carolina grown and made products, customers are offered breakfasts and lunches cooked on-site.

There are also dairy products, meats, cheeses, eggs, organic and local vegetables and fruits, fresh pastas and sauces, baked goods, honey, wood and paper crafts, body products, etc.

Hotel Florence is another big draw featuring high-end rooms, including a penthouse suite with two bedrooms and a rooftop patio overlooking the James Allen Plaza where free music concerts are held. Another hotel, the Hyatt Place, is expected to open downtown in 2018.

Complementing Hotel Florence is Victors, a top vote getter for “best in the region” in fine dining. People rave about Southern style delicacies such as she-crab and shrimp bisque with aged sherry. Executive Chef Cooper Thomas, a 2015 South Carolina Chef Ambassador, offers a popular variety of salads, soups, steak, fresh seafood and much more. And don’t forget, Victors offers more than 200 wines and premium beers!

Also on Evans, the Southern-inspired menu for the Town Hall restaurant changes with the seasons with a selection of starters and entrees including locally raised meat, pork and seafood prepared on an open wood-fire grille (some ingredients come from a nearby family farm).

Town Hall also offers an extensive list of American spirits, local beer, fine wines and cocktails.

In fact, sitting atop Town Hall is The Dispensary, which features an incredible 3,500 square feet of rooftop and a drink menu consisting of cocktails along with exquisite wines and beers from local breweries.

A stone’s throw away on Dargan Street is Local Motive Brewing. A comfortable atmosphere complements a tasty, simple menu, but the real draw is their 12 unique brews on tap. Their brewing system allows them to brew smaller, more specific batches with a variety of styles.

Nearby is Dolce Vita Café and More, a wine and chocolate tasting room with coffee and snacks. Locals and tourists take in delicious chocolates from Belgian-trained master chocolatiers, cakes-in-jars made by Sweetleigh’s Cakes and Treats, and other desserts. Prepaid cards allow customers to sample or gulp down white and red wines on tap.

The bustling concentration of downtown restaurants also features made-to order sushi at Thai House 2, where you can also enjoy dishes such as teriyaki duck and volcano fish, and Southern barbecue at Wholly Smokin Downtown, which offers smoked meats (the ribs are to die for!) and classic sides, plus beer, wine & cocktails.

Adjacent is also the William H. Johnson Renaissance Courtyard, named for a renowned local painter from the Harlem Renaissance. Adjoining restaurants host live entertainment there.

Not everything is centered near Dargan Street, as Soule Café nails a relaxed, kickback atmosphere while offering coffee, specialty drinks, music, arts and light food; King Jefe wows the taste buds as an eclectic taqueria (try the house-made guacamole and a signature cocktail!); and Top Hat Special-Teas offers lunch and afternoon teas daily as well as baby showers, bridal luncheons and wedding receptions.

Providing transportation to and from downtown for free is the trolley service Downtown Connect. Guests staying in hotels near Hospitality Blvd. can take advantage of the transportation service. The trolley service runs every 30 minutes from 5:30 to 10:30pm Tuesday through Thursday, and 5:30 to 11:30pm Friday and Saturday.

The transportation also services the arts, which are a big part of downtown’s success thanks to high-caliber performances at the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center (FMU PAC) and Florence Little Theatre, while the Florence County Museum reflects the Pee Dee region’s diverse artistic, cultural and historic heritage.

The Florence Little Theatre offers an energetic season of professional level plays and Broadway musicals performed by a local theater group.

FMU PAC hosts nationally touring Broadway performances, variety shows, and concerts such as Graham Nash, while the Florence Symphony plays classical music and also a pops series that has featured such vocalists as Art Garfunkel and the Indigo Girls.

The Florence Museum offers a wide range of exhibitions, lectures and family friendly fare, including local history such as Native American, Colonial and Civil War period artifacts, artifacts related to FBI agent and Florence County native Melvin Purvis, and fragments of an atomic bomb accidentally dropped on the Mars Bluff community in 1958, to name a small sample.

The U-shaped building surrounds a landscaped courtyard with two linear wings accessed by a dramatic double height lobby. The wings house space for educational programs, state-of-the-art collections processing and storage, and a dramatic public lobby.

The large outdoor courtyard creates an outdoor gallery for learning, as well as a beautiful setting for special events.

The Florence County Museum is generally available for rental before or after normal business hours with the Multi-Purpose Room available for rental during normal business hours. Consideration for each request is based upon the timing of the event in relation to the museum’s activities and current availability. The museum is available for rentals beginning at 5pm until 11pm.

The FCM is an ideal location for cocktail receptions, dinners, meetings, presentations, corporate events, weddings, wedding receptions, and other approved events. The FCM is unable to rent facilities for political events, events endorsing a candidate actively running for public office, campaigning purposes, and fundraising events for other arts organizations. National Bean Market Museumwww.visitlakecitysc.com/venues

Built in 1936 by the Public Works Administration as part of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “New Deal,” the Lake City Bean Market rose to acclaim as the world’s largest truck auction of green beans in Lake City’s agricultural prime. Farmers drove to centrally located Lake City from all over the South to bring their bean crops to market; traders would then ship the beans north on one of the many freight trains that rolled through Lake City each day.

The Bean Market now serves as a multi-purpose cultural and community center at the heart of downtown Lake City. Residing across the street from the beautiful Village Green, the building has been completely restored to offer a unique and flexible rental space as a venue for conferences & meetings, weddings & receptions and private parties. The facility includes 8,500 square feet of space, with flexible setup options that include a 5,800-square-foot open floor, a 750-square-foot stage with a 14-foot projection screen with a sound system, and a convenient catering kitchen including ice maker. Banquet tables & chairs are available as well.

The Bean Market is located at 111 Henry Street in Lake City. For more information, please call 843-374-1500.

If you’ve never tasted shrimp and grits, you don’t know what you’re missing! And plenty of folks in Florence agree that Red Bone Alley has the recipe to beat.

Red Bone Alley is a unique Florence eatery that is famous for its decor and Southern fusion menu. The restaurant itself consists of two floors with an interior that recreates the outdoor experience of Charleston. There are Lowcountry landscape murals painted by artist David Boatwright, a back porch with glowing lanterns, an upstairs balcony overlooking the alley, and a children’s area complete with an old ice cream truck.

If the space itself doesn’t persuade you, the menu will. Red Bone Alley is famous for much more than its Lowcountry Shrimp and Grits. Customers pour in for entrees such as their Grilled Sweet Tea Marinated Pork Chop and Pimento Cheese Burger.

Red Bone Alley prepares all of its entrees to order, and uses only the freshest local ingredients. For example, the rice comes from a plantation in neighboring Darlington County.

Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers was founded in 1974 in Atlanta, Georgia. For over 40 years, Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers has been serving up fresh, stone-baked pizzas to order in an eclectic, art-filled, and family-friendly environment. Each Mellow is locally owned and operated and provides a unique feel focused around great customer service and high-quality food.

Known for its tasty pizza and funky, hippie-style atmosphere, Mellow Mushroom’s mission is to provide delicious food in a fun and creative environment. They are the originators of hand tossed, stone baked classic Southern pizza. Their spring water crust is unique and flavorful, and all of their pies are made with high quality, fresh ingredients.

The Florence location features a special menu just for locals. Our favorite is The Caesar Pie, an olive oil and garlic base pie featuring all-natural pesto chicken, provolone, mozzarella, and feta topped with a Caesar salad and Roma tomatoes.

If you don’t know who Shoney Bear® is, you should stop in at a Shoney’s restaurant in Florence where they’ve been serving families for 60 years.

Shoney’s is famous for its multiple buffets and one-of-a-kind strawberry pie. They offer a breakfast and lunch/ dinner buffet as well as special buffets like brunch or seafood. They also offer a plentiful cold bar where you can make your very own strawberry shortcake or customize a fresh salad with all the fixings.

A typical Shoney’s breakfast can include fluffy, buttermilk pancakes; fresh fruit; and biscuits with sausage gravy. You can even have eggs “your way” straight from the kitchen to your table. For lunch, dive into cubed steak with peppers and onions, golden fried chicken or homemade meatloaf. If you dine in on Friday nights, you can enjoy their seafood buffet that includes peel and eat shrimp, baked fish and deviled crab.

If you’re not in the mood for the buffet, try a classic entree from their menu like an All-American Burger or Country Fried Steak.

For your next meeting, book a private room at Shoney’s in Florence, and enjoy their famous buffet.

At Schoolhouse Bar-B-Que you can expect a warm and friendly wait staff, a nostalgic atmosphere, and of course all the Southern delights your tummy craves. Set in an old historic schoolhouse, Schoolhouse Bar-B-Que has been serving the great folks of the Pee Dee area for 16 years.

At Schoolhouse you can always find zesty, vinegar-based barbecue on the buffet, as well as fried chicken, chicken bog, chicken and dumplings, and sweet potato souffle. You’ll also have fresh biscuits and cornbread to choose from, as well as several Southern side dishes.

But the folks at Schoolhouse like to mix it up a little bit too. They have a seafood buffet on Friday nights, and include fresh baked ham and roast beef on the Sunday buffet. Occasionally they’ll also offer smoked sausage, country style steak and gravy, meatloaf and spaghetti.

And don’t forget about dessert. Schoolhouse is also serving up plenty of sweet treats alongside their barbecue buffet, such as peach cobbler, banana pudding and soft serve vanilla ice cream.

Schoolhouse, open Thursday through Sunday, offers two unique meeting spaces, both of which are full of history and nostalgic memorabilia.

Recreation

Trust your sports event to the professionals of the Florence Area Sports Council and ensure success! Florence offers world-class, multi-purpose venues, collegiate and city-county, for a variety of sports as well as a beautiful landscape for cycling and road races. The Great Pee Dee and Little Pee Dee rivers are great for canoeing and kayaking.

The star of Florence’s sports facilities is the Freedom Florence Recreation Complex covering 126 acres in the east central part of the city. The complex offers 9 championship caliber softball fields, 4 multi-purpose fields, a youth softball complex, gymnastics center, walking trails and a five acre lake. The championship softball facilities each feature seating for 500 spectators, computerized scoreboards, 320-foot fences and metal halide lighting. The three-story control tower contains a press box, full service concession stand, restrooms, first aid and a well-stocked pro shop. Five covered picnic areas and a children’s playground are adjacent to the control tower.

The Florence Center is the largest convention and entertainment facility in northeast South Carolina and is host to many sports events’ grand opening ceremonies. The facility provides a 10,000-seat arena and 75,000 square-feet of convention and exhibition space with full concessions and catering.

Florence offers over 40 parks and recreation fields, which provide a variety of facilities. Beautiful Timrod Park has 14

lighted tennis courts for tournament play. The park also features walking and nature trails, gardens and gazebo, a playground and covered picnic area. The Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center boasts 24 hard courts and six Hydro clay courts, and is one of South Carolina’s premier tennis facilities.

The Florence Soccer Complex opened in the spring of 2018 with 14 playing fields on 90 acres of land. Also opened in 2018 is the Pearl Moore Gymnasium, a 30,000 sq. ft. facility with 3 full-size basketball courts.

Francis Marion University, on the eastern edge of the city, provides several athletic facilities. The university competes in the NCAA Division I in men’s golf and women’s soccer. It’s also a member of NCAA Division II in men’s & women’s basketball, men’s soccer, cross country, golf, softball and baseball, tennis, and volleyball. The $11-million-dollar Griffin Athletics Complex, constructed in 2012, is state of the art and brings baseball, softball, and soccer to one dynamite central location.

The Florence area also has more than 30 challenging and well-manicured golf courses available for group and tournament play.

Florence provides a delightful Southern coastal climate, affordable accommodations, a diversity of dining, and is ideally located at the crossroads of I-95 and I-20.
