Some cultures have developed distinctive housing styles, using locally harvested building materials

and simple construction.

While they meet the needs of the residents in straightforward, practical ways, these homes are

often quite beautiful and subtly styled.

Why choose this design?

This house was built in New Orleans, Louisiana, before air-conditioning was invented. To keep cool in the hot and humid summers, the residents would open the tall windows to let the breezes pass through the house, and would take advantage of the shade and fresh air provided by the big open porches. Trees were planted close to the house to help shade it from the hot sun.

Why are these houses built on the water?

• These houses are built on rafts so that the nomadic people who live in the Annam Mountains of central Vietnam can move about freely from one side of the lake to the other. The houses are built from hardwood trees that grow slowly in the mountains. This hard wood takes a long time to rot, so it's perfect for building a house that sits in the water.

What is the colour scheme? Why?

This beach house looks like a shipping crate that was washed ashore. The rusted steel and natural wood exterior reflects the colors of the surrounding vegetation, and the glass walls offer an uninterrupted view of the ocean.

Who would want a house like this?

When the architect Kazumasa Yamashita was hired to build this house on a dreary street in downtown Kyoto, he decided to have fun and make it stand apart from the neighboring conventional houses. The first floor of this building houses a studio for a graphic designer, and apartments are located on the second and top floors. The building itself acts as a billboard for the graphic designer.

Why does the roof overhang?

Architect Pierre Koenig designed this California house for outdoor living, and to take advantage of the view afforded by its hilltop site. The glass enclosed wing makes the residents feel as if they are floating. The wide cantilevered roof provides some poolside shade.
