Guild Meeting Dates November 2014

November President’s Message Hello from lovely St. George Utah! My husband competes here in track and softball for gold, silver and bronze medals at the annual Huntsman Senior Games. I tag along to bring home the completed UFOs I’m working on and purchase fabric trophies for my stash from the numerous quilt shops I visit in the area. Many, many thanks to Kate Grant for “stepping up to the plate” with the Guild for all of October to allow me to

have this very nice, long vacation! !Congratulations to the 2015 officers elected at the October meeting! Kate Grant, Diane Klose, Donna Switzer and Karen Mitchell are all very well qualified and will bring new ideas and energy to our board. Please consider stepping up and volunteering to help with a committee in 2015, it’s a great way to get to know other members better and have a lot of fun! Call or email Kate or me to inquire about position details. Our new program chairperson, Heidi Emmett is already busily at work and has scheduled Jan Soules with her Spider Web quilt workshop for January, details later in newsletter, and our very own member, Pat Fryer for February 3, owner and creator of www.villarosadesign.com. !There is complete information on pages three and four regarding our proposed 2015 Guild budget, prepared by our Finance and Budget Chair, Karle deProsse. Karle and the budget committee put a lot of thought and time into the budget preparation and it has been recommend by the Board to use this budget. We will have a short discussion regarding budget at the November Guild meeting and the vote will be at the December meeting. Please contact Karle or me in advance of the meeting with any questions. !It’s already time to renew membership, the form is online at www.pinetreequiltguild.com. It is located under forms. Do you know that the guild has membership fee scholarships? If you, or someone you know, cannot afford our $25 membership fee, please contact membership chair, Kris Cook or me to arrange for a scholarship. No one knows except Kris and I, scholarships are treated very confidentially. !Happy Thanksgiving!

Guild Finances!!The next pages contain information concerning the Guild’s finances and classification as a non-profit. One report shows the profit and loss activity since 1997. Between 1997 and 2005 there were gains, while the years between 2006 and 2013 showed some gains, but also significant losses. Another shows the proposed budget for 2015. A third piece clarifies what kind of a non-profit the guild is. The last item is the finance report for September.

What kind of a non-profit are we?

The Pine Tree Quilt Guild is a 501 (c) 4 non-profit corporation. The “4” classification is for membership organizations. A charity is classified as a 501 (c) 3. While we are a true non-profit, we are not a charitable non-profit. This means that donations given to us cannot be deducted on one’s tax return under charitable contributions. We also cannot solicit donations and imply that they can be written off. Businesses can donate goods and absorb the cost in their inventory reduction or place the cost under advertising (if such is received in exchange.) On the other hand, we do a lot of charitable work with all the quilts donated through Community Services, the programs in the local schools with our Educational Outreach, scholarships to high school students, and educating the public on quilts and quilting at our annual Quilt Show.

TIME — Guild Challenge     Time is the question. Where does the time go? Do we have enough time? What is time? How do I

make that into a quilt? !!    Time is the answer. Time does indeed fly by but you have until our March guild meeting to finish

your "Time" challenge. Time to decide colors, shapes, and sizes, pieced, appliqué, art, or traditional. These are all timely choices to be working on now.!!

In case time has slipped by and you don't remember, "Time" is our Guild challenge this year. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 432-9423.!!

Lois Hodges!Guild Challenge Chair!

2014 HOLIDAY PARTY! COMING SOON . . . The annual Holiday Party Tuesday, December 2, 2014. Details will be revealed at the November meeting. The committee is sure you will like the setting and the program. !We are hosting a “personal hygiene” campaign for Utah’s Place. It is not too late to save travel size soap, shampoo, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes for the donation box. Please bring these unused to the party. Each contributing member will receive a ticket for a special gift

!!Community Services and Drop In and Sew !November 20th, 9:00 – 3:00, Seventh Day Adventist Church, Osborne Hill Road, Grass Valley. Time is drawing near for the annual distribution for those in need – homeless, victims of natural disaster, senior care facilities, foster youth, deployed military, Salvation Army, Children/Adult Protective Services, and others. On December 3 CS will distribute over 300 hundred quilts, Christmas stockings, pillow cases, walker bags, and wall/table quilts to

local agencies. !CS has a limited budget and values community and guild member donations of thread, fabric, and zippered plastic “bags” to store the quilts in. Member help is invaluable in making tops, quilting, and/or binding. Nothing fancy required, practice your free motion quilting or stitch in the ditch, sew from corner to corner, stipple, meander, whatever you want to try. No need to bring supplies – if you need it we have it! Chocolate, homemade cookies, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and lots of fun and laughter keeps your energy up. Do bring a lunch if you are staying all day. If you cannot attend CS but would like to help, please contact Marjorie. !!THANK YOU! Many phone hours are spent in September, October, and November to determine which agencies need CS quilts and items and how many are needed by each agency. Judy Johnston, Sue Fisher, and Eleanor Sagely have been busy making these arrangements. On December 3 CS volunteers will meet to match up requests with available items and then deliver to local agencies. THANK YOU ALL. !2014 Community Service Dates November 20 December NO COMMUNITY SERVICE MEETING

Thank you, Marjorie McConnell

Community Services Appreciation. For all who support Community Services there will be a

special drawing (or maybe more?). Beginning in January and continuing through November, names of every member who comes to CS and/or contributes in

some way – quilt tops, donations, quilting, binding, etc., are entered for this drawing. Will you be a lucky

winner? Thanks, Marjorie

!Patchwork Star for November, 2014 Michael DeGruccio ! Hey, there's a guy in the fabric department at Ben Franklin! Dismiss your misgivings, ladies, and let Michael DeGruccio kick up your awareness to his refreshing and youthful countenance. He claims no naivete, no hesitance. With four quilts under his belt and a bevy of classes, he is not shy with offering appropriate urgings, encouragements and tips to customers. Perhaps a true quilting neophyte compared to most of us, Michael has successfully captured a trifecta of duties at Ben's. He was hired as a cashier; he showed passion working in the fabric department; and he has entered the Soft Crafts Department as a competent and vetted knitter! ”Knitting is easier than crochet,” he opined. “You can count and keep track

of each stitch with your two knitting needles, but with a crochet hook it's easy to lose your way.” Besides, he added, “knitting lends itself to more and varied projects, especially garment making such as sox, gloves and sweaters. He gets bored easily and prefers complicated patterns with cables and popcorns. ! At 23, Michael is the eldest in his large family: Sophia 21, Matthew 19, Joshua 18, Lauren 16, Adam 9, and Isabella 7. With many relatives nearby, holidays, and even nightly dinners, can be quite chaotic. All the unmarried kids are required to re-enact the Nativity scene at their Christmas gathering. “One year I got to be the star!” Michael said he stood still with a light bulb under a sheet! ! Quilt construction is accomplished at the kitchen table. Albeit a big table accommodating nine people, Michael must sew when he's home alone. One-block wonder pink Volkswagens were in progress. Classes at Sugar Pine and helpful instruction at Drop-in and Sew provide stimulus. He shares a Janome Memory Craft 9000 with Mom, using its handy walking foot for smaller quilting exercises. A craft room off the kitchen is stuffed with jillions of paper arts' gizmos and gewgaws. Michael's modest fabric accumulations are neatly folded in a small box there. Claiming, “I'm the only quilter without a stash,” Michael just needs his own apartment to gather stuff, spread out and expand. It'll happen! ! Casting an anxious eye towards the future, Michael has a quilting passion with a firm sense of design. His unfussed over choices are sophisticated and disciplined, expressing a clear vision. He is not dabbling. Being home taught in grade school, progressing to Sierra College and on to Humboldt State has given him a clearer perspective. Pursuing a degree in botany and art in college was worthwhile, but inconclusive. Taking new time to reflect may morph into more college art classes and possibly a business degree. ! Love and connectivity are clear in his family values. Sharing, needless to say, is paramount. His first quilt sporting a Super Hero theme, was a gift to Adam. The Volkswagens will probably be given to Isabella. A mature-hued grey-blue 1600 quilt is robust and winsome. Lots of TLC (texture, line and color) figure in. Michael chooses fabrics with utmost care and consideration, often asking others' opinions—not necessarily agreeing. There's obviously a sheer love of process. He has accumulated many quilting books that provide know-how and detailed instruction. “Boring” is not in this equation! ! Michael has become my right-hand man on Saturdays at Ben's. He exhibits an impressive heft and sparkle with a fresh surge of courage. Come on in—the water's warm, for today he is a “Real Star”! ! Jeanie Ferguson Patchwork Star Reporter

QUILT SHOW – 2015 !Planning for our May 2-3 2015 Quilt Show is well underway! It’s not too early to be planning what quilts you will be entering. Anne has already reserved a spot with her quilter, now just to have it

ready on time! We are in need of a few volunteers to step up to help make the QS enjoyable for all. Phyllis

Brodie has taken the lead to be props chair for Northern Mines building and has wonderful plans for the lunchroom area. What is needed is someone to coordinate with the caterer and another to schedule workers. Baskets is in need of a coordinator and scheduler. We are also in need of a coordinator for Publicity, we already have two very reliable volunteers for the mailing and media portions. If you would lend a hand in any of these positions (much smaller segments than in the

past) or would like additional information please contact Mary or Anne. THANK YOU!!!

January 2015 meeting:

Jan Soules from Elk Grove, CA

Her lecture is: “Spectacular Borders: from basics to beyond.”

This 45 minute lecture includes a discussion of various border treatments, with emphasis on what works and why. She will use her prize winning quilts to demonstrate the different border treatments and explain how you can turn an ordinary quilt top into an extraordinary one! Jan’s

presentation is just what we all will need after a busy, busy, holiday season.

Workshop at the Seventh Day Adventist fellowship hall. !!To continue the fun, sign up for her workshop the next day! If you use lots of color and prints it

will be a Kaleidoscope Quilt. If you like traditional prints and solids, call it Modified Spider Web. Either way, Jan will get us well on our way to creating a 55 ½” square wallhanging. Sign

ups start at the November meeting so don’t wait!

Jan's workshop can be the start of your New Year’s Resolution to take every workshop that you can, expanding your knowledge of quilting and creating something new and unique every

month!
