Nearly 70% of medical students say their medical schools need to provide more training relating to practice management and ownership.Dissatisfaction with practice management training continues…Only 8 percent feel equipped to manage a practice, and only 4 percent to bill and code. As a result, only 12 percent of students plan to work in solo or partnership practice, continuing the trend toward employment by hospitals and large group practices.

Leadership qualities of physician supervisors appear to impact the well-being and satisfaction of individual physicians working in health care organizations. These findings have important implications for the selection and training of physician leaders and provide new insights into organizational factors that affect physician well-being.

In addition to burnout, improper training for physician supervisors can lead to o increased turnovero employees dissatisfactiono increased medical errors (PUBMED:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19934755)o lack of empathy with patientso increased national shortage of doctors and nurses

How Do We Help Healthcare Systems and Doctors?

Page 14: The Physician's Edge Presentation

• (Primary) The first group, the “Enterprise” audience, is the largest of the three groups and will be targeted through healthcare systems/medical centers; this includes large private practices or groups. The decision makers within this group are c-suite executives (CEO, COO, CLO, CMO, and/or CHRO), or any executive-level leader who can make decisions on the purchase of licenses or responsible for the learning function of the physicians population. It is important to note that the decision maker may differ from the end-user within this group.

• The second group, the “Entrepreneur” physician group, consists of physicians who have started or joined small private practices or groups. The decision maker(s) within this group are single or multiple physician partners who are responsible for the oversight of the practices’ day-to-day operations and strategies. Within this group, the decision maker and the end-user will likely be one and the same

• The third group, the “Student” physician, consists of medical students, residents and fellows. This particular group may also fall under the “Enterprise” or “Entrepreneur” group, with the exception of medical students. Within this group, the decision maker will either be the student physician themselves, or in the enterprise sense, the decision maker may be the head of a medical school program or Dean of a medical school. The end-user within this group will be the student physician.
