The Pastor’s Pen
These next two months have special importance to me. This is in
addition to the July birthdays of Sue, my grandson Darrell and me, and
my 37th wedding anniversary in June. Forty years ago in June I
preached my initial sermon here at First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill. It
was during my sophomore year at Morehouse College that I began to
wrestle more intently with what God was calling me to do. As I reflect
now, it was probably two years before that that I began to feel that there was something special that
God was calling for me to do. I went to Morehouse College in Atlanta with the intent of majoring in
Religion, I came to an educational crisis when I was not connecting well with the religion teachers and
thought maybe there was something else I was supposed to do. I had no clue what that may be.
God kept tugging on me to tell me that though I was not “feeling” a major in Religion that He was still
calling me to the ministry. After talking with Reverend Bill Guy, who was my pastor at the Friendship
Baptist Church in Atlanta, and my father, who was the pastor here as First Baptist Church, Capitol
Hill, I was given the opportunity to preach my first sermon on June 30, 1974 (Romans 1:16).
(Historically, it was also the same day that the mother of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mrs. Alberta King
was shot and killed while playing the organ at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.)
The service was that evening at 6:15 p.m. and the title and scripture for that Sunday evening was
"The Prodigal Son" from Luke 15:11 – 24. The sermon was basically just retelling the story without
much theological reflection in it (I still have the notes from it). But it did embark me upon a journey
that continues to this day.
Five years later, July 18, 1979, I and four others (including The Reverend Dr. Edith Kimbrough) were
ordained into the ministry (Ephesian 4:11 – 13). This year marks the 35 anniversary of that day. It
was a very special occasion for us because we were being ordained together. It was during the
service and when I went to the pulpit to receive the ordination certificate that my father became
emotional, and Dr. Charles E. Boddie had to assist with the next person who was receiving his
ordination certificate.
Five years after that (thirty years ago), June 3, 1984 my dad passed away (Psalm 116:15). And the
journey continues.

“Hand of God Beneath Our Ups and Downs” The Reverend Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr.
Scriptural Text: Genesis 45:1-14 Submitted by: Beverly M. Brown
Rev. Dr. Forbes provided a summarized version of how homiletics, the art of preaching, is used in a minister’s message. The message was based on the following three areas:
1. The hand of God being involved in history,
2. How the hand of God is involved in each person’s present history, and
3. God’s message of hope. He provided a historical overview of Joseph, of Potiphar’s wife’s pursuit of Joseph, and of Joseph’s reflection on his brothers for mistreating him and not recognizing him until he disclosed his identity to them. Joseph was a dreamer. His father had a great love for him. This contributed to his brothers’ putting him in a pit to die and then being untruthful with their father about what had happened to Joseph. Moreover, Rev. Forbes prodded the congregation to know that humankind needs to live God’s word, have an imagination, and know that in each person’s “ups and downs,” God is present and can get him or her through whatever the situations may be. However, we may experience a delay or a different outcome. God’s outcome or resolve is always better for our lives. Finally, Rev. Forbes shared a few personal examples of how God has brought him through his “ups and downs.” God can do the same for those persons who believe, trust, and follow His lead. Amen, Amen, and Amen.

“A Friend at Midnight” Pastor Kelly M. Smith Jr.
Scriptural Text: Luke 11:5-13 Submitted by: Charles B. Fancher
The scriptural text shows a part of Jesus’ response to His disciples, who had asked Him to teach them to pray. This part of the response was in the form of a parable (Luke 11:5-13). It consists of the interaction between two friends when one petitions the other for a favor in the middle of the night. The parable illustrates how sometimes God interacts with us during our prayers. In this parable, the midnight request was not immediately granted; but the persistence of the petitioner eventually led to the granting of the requested favor. All of us at various times have experienced problems which, at midnight, seemed absolutely hopeless. We pray to God realizing that His answers are according to His wisdom and his schedule. Persistence in prayer is needed to gain the blessings assured by God at midnight and at all other times. There are critical elements in our friendship with God that elevate its value above all other friendships. 1. We need to have a friend we can go to because of
relationship. Our behavior might at times weaken our permanent relationship with God, He assures us that He does not cause the deterioration of His relationship with us.
2. We need to have a friend we can go to because of necessity. There are times when we experience needs that are inherently too shameful for us to seek assistance from earthly friends; but we have no need ever to be ashamed to pray to God. (Philippians 4:6)
3. We need to have a friend we can go to because of trust. Learn to trust in God; He is omnipresent. God is our friend even at the midnight hour. (Psalm 121:3)
4 SERMON DIGESTS
God is always at the helm of a true and sincere relationship. The story of Ruth provides us with an extraordinary relationship between two women who had a need for each other, Naomi and Ruth
The extraordinary bond between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law was initiated by the death of Naomi’s husband and her two sons, who were the husbands of Ruth and Orpah. It was the type of relationship that went beyond its normal boundaries.
There are several lessons that can be learned from the bond between Ruth and Naomi:
Lesson 1 – It was a bond that turned obstacles into opportunities. There are several obstacles encountered in this story: the nature of the drought, the emotional loss of all men in the family, the absence of children in the family, etc. These obstacles gave way to opportunities, which helped these women to realize that their love was stronger than a mere obligation.
Lesson 2 – It was a bond that was sealed by intentionality. These three women were not required to stay together after the devastating loss of their husbands. Naomi beseeched them to return to their native land and people. Orpah yielded to the request and left. However, Ruth showed a love that reached beyond her sense of duty and obligation to assure Naomi that she would always be by her side.
Lesson 3 – It was a bond that showed keeping principles while changing practices. The underlying principle in the relationship between Naomi and Ruth is love. We must know our principles and practices and understand the difference between them. We should always be prepared tochange our practices to accommodate our principles.
Lesson 4 – It was a bond that was Divinely blessed. The story of Ruth is a story of love, which helps us to understand that the hand of God was involved from beginning to end. It reminds us that God is always in the midst of everything. Regardless of the obstacles and anxieties we face, we must remember that God wants us to have an extraordinary bond with Him.
Psalm 34 is a tribute to David as he was attempting to escape King Saul, prior to his ascension to the throne of Israel. Webster defines “taste” as “experiencing the flavor in something that you are eating or drinking, to have a perception or experience of enjoyment.” David in this Psalm causes us to experience the Lord. Point 1 – “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” In order to taste something, it has to be in your immediate proximity. David sought out the Lord. How many of us actually seek out the Lord? Point 2 – “Oh, magnify the Lord with me! We should magnify and praise the Lord together; the Lord hears and rescues the righteous from all their troubles. Point 3 – “I sought the Lord. I cried out to the Lord.” David seeks and calls out to the Lord. How many of us truly seek the presence of God? Those who fear the Lord will have no want. Those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. This is not a “name it and claim it” train of thought; but, God knows what we need and He promises to provide for us. For us to receive these gifts from God, David says we must do five things:
1. Keep our tongue from evil and deceit from our lips.
2. Watch what we say and how we say what we say.
3. Depart from evil. 4. Do good. 5. Seek peace.
The Lord hears, saves, rescues, and redeems. He saves us in our darkest hour. He rescues us even from our own stupid selves. And He redeems us. “Taste and see that the Lord is good! Happy are they that take refuge in Him!”

Fathers’ Day was founded in Spokane, WA at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there. After hearing a sermon about Mothers’ Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honoring them. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, the pastors did not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June.

KROGER GIFT CARDS PROGRAM The Endowment Board wishes to thank you for your continuing support and wishes to remind you that the Kroger Company contributes to the church’s Endowment Fund each time we use our Kroger Gift Card to make purchases at Kroger stores. The Endowment Board’s goal is to get 100% of the congregation participating in this important program. When our Kroger Gift Cards’ reload reaches $5,000.00 or more, the church receives a check from Kroger for 4% of all associated reloads. If you do not have a First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill Kroger
Gift Card or if your card has expired, please see or call
Deacon Ronald McFarland or Trustee Paul Robertson. We
also encourage you to use the Kroger Gift Cards to
purchase gasoline.
