From the Pastor’s Pen October 2019 The past few days with the crisp, cool breezes have had us standing on our tiptoes looking for autumn. The signs of autumn, if we are attentive to their presence, are there — roadside signs offering bright-colored mums for sale, the first fall leaves floating to the green grass, and temperatures dropping to the low 50s overnight. October, also, brings us opportunities of gathering in community. We will celebrate Fellowship Sunday (October 6 at 10:45 a.m.) when we will break the bread and lift the cup of our Lord, reminding us that our gathering in community is grounded in the Lordship of Jesus Christ. After the worship service, we will break out our lawn chairs, grab a plate of Ron’s Barbecue’s fixings, and soak up lively conversations with our gathered community. More details about reservations and the day may be found on page 2. Another great Autumn event is Operation Inasmuch, this one-day missions’ blitz of our community on Saturday, October 12, at 8:30 a.m. I am grateful for Keith Dangerfield who is, once again, leading our operation. We have a variety of on-site and off-site mission opportunities that Saturday. Two of our work locations will be in West Southern Pines at either the Little Teapot Nursery or the Woodlawn Cemetery located behind the Southern Pines Primary School. Other projects include efforts at Cameron Boys Camp and Camp Duncan, both institutions serving children in need. Of course, we’ll have some on-site ministries as well. For more details, simply go to fbcsp.org and click on the link for Operation Inasmuch. I have planned my preaching calendar through Thanksgiving, and, as hard as it is to believe, our staff has already put together our major themes for the Season of Advent and Christmas. Below is a list of my topics and themes for the next few weeks: I, also, want to thank Tom Allen and Jim Langford for preaching for me while Carolyn and I were away. Learning to Follow Jesus Has your child asked questions about what it means to follow Jesus? Carolyn and I are planning another four-week session this fall on Sunday afternoons to allow your child to inquire and learn what it means to follow Jesus and be a part of the body of Christ. Please contact Carolyn or me for further details.

“Thy word have I hidden in my heart that I might not sin against thee…” - Psalm 119:11 Having a transformed mind and heart begins with intentional training, deciding daily what we choose to think about and focus on. Missing the “mark” of God’s intentions in our lives is not the goal of any of us who follow Jesus. So, let’s be intentional about placing God’s word in our hearts and minds by memorizing the “Family Verse of the Month.” Parents are the most influential people in a child’s life. Influence your children by modeling the memorization of scripture as a family. When tempted by Satan, Jesus refuted each temptation with scripture. Let God’s word shape the development of values in your family’s life. Jesus’ method of turning away from temp-tation is the proven way. The verse of the month will be at the bottom of your worship bulletin each week.

Our regular Wednesday Night Programming is back in full swing. The time for packing our shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child is almost here!

National Collection Week is November 18-25, and Dedication Sunday for our church is November 17.

This is a special opportunity each year to send a shoebox full of fun and useful things to needy children around the world.

In countries where allowed, each child receives the story of Jesus in their own language along with a shoebox. Each shoebox is a “gospel opportunity” to share the love of Jesus.

Last year, our church sent 391 “gospel opportunities.” What

difference did our efforts of packing these shoebox gifts mean to each of these children? Lots of fun and laughter, and most importantly, the possibility of a child coming to know Jesus.

Remember, no liquids, war toys, toothpaste, or candy. The shipping donation is $9. Shoeboxes, labels, and lists

of suggested gift items to include in your box are available near the missions bulletin board next to Fellowship Hall.

Thanks so much for supporting Operation Christmas Child!

Dedication Sunday November 17

National Collection Week November 18-25

No liquids, war toys, toothpaste, or candy, please.

Please remember to enclose a shipping donation of $9.00 with each shoebox.

Our Children & Youth packing party is on Wednesday, November 6. Bring your bags of items that night, and we will have a fun time of fellowship as we pack and pray over boxes. Our goal is 100 boxes. See you there!

Some Thoughts on the Role of the Choir in Worship The ministry of the choir is biblical. As you read the Psalms, you observe that the writers made careful notes to the music director explaining the style, the melody, and the surrounding events about which certain Psalms were written. Worship in the Old Testament was led by many trained singers and musicians; we see this referenced throughout the Psalms. The book of Psalms was the first hymnal; Psalms have been used in worship ever since. The choir supports and encourages congregational singing in worship. One of the most important roles of the church choir is in encouraging and supporting the congregation in song. Worshippers in the congregation who can harmonize will find support from the choir as they sing their parts—soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. The choir is a musical encouragement to the entire congregation as we worship in Spirit and in Truth. Choral singing celebrates one of God’s greatest creations —the human voice. The human voice is a unique creation. Like a fingerprint, no two voices are alike. Vocalization is important. The voice helps define a person. There is something thrilling about hearing a group of musicians who have honed their skills as they lead in worship. The blending of all of these voices joined together—the mixture of God’s people singing praises to Him—certainly is a picture of worship in heaven. Choral singing encourages excellence in worship. Good choirs rarely sing a piece “on the spur of the moment.” A director spends a good amount of time rehearsing with singers and musicians in order to perform with beauty and skill. The goal is to present our best musical offering to God with the idea of glorifying Him through our efforts. Anthems are chosen with the idea of supporting the Word of God during the worship service. This is a very important role and requires us to strive for excellence. Our choir is a group of believers who support one another. We never hold a rehearsal where we do not pray for our church, for each other, and for our efforts in leading God’s people in worship. There is joy in building each other up through good times and through difficult times. Every person is important and valued as we listen to and pray for each other.

The church choir is all about teamwork. Choirs are at their best when we yield to one another and listen and encourage each other. Our work calls for listening for and to the entrance of another section, and we all succeed and do well as we work together. Recently, we did a very complicated anthem that required the altos to enter in a diffi-cult spot on a pitch that was hard to find, and they had to hear the sopranos clearly to do it. And they nailed it! Trust is built through teamwork (and lots of laughter along the way!). The ministry of choral music offers a number of benefits to the congregation. The musical support of a worship service is obvious, but there are many other uplifting notes to consider!

Are you looking for a place to sing, to serve, and to belong? Look no further. There is a place in the choir for you.

New Women’s Ministry The Women’s Ministry of FBCSP was created for women to CONNECT, DISCOVER, and GROW together. The Women’s Ministry encourages women—ages 13 to 99— to CONNECT with other women in our church where friend-ships are developed and laughter is contagious. The Women’s Ministry encourages women to DISCOVER and share experiences, develop their gifts, and empower each other to accomplish what God has planned for their lives. The Women’s Ministry encourages women to experience God’s grace together and GROW spiritually by demonstrating His love to the world as wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends. Mark your calendars and join other women from FBCSP for a time of fellowship and breakfast at Golden Corral at 8 a.m. on Saturday, October 5. The cost is $5 per person, and no reservation is required. The Women’s Breakfast will be a recurring event held on the 1st Saturday of every month. There will be more events and opportunities to come.
