The Parrothead Post I case you havent heard, the results from this years Riddles In the Sandcelebration are in! August 28 at Aspens, with entertainment provided by Matt Hoggatt and Double Dee, the following checks were presented to The Lighthouse Charity Team $24,000.00, The Alzhei- mers Foundation $3,000.00, The Shriners $3,000.00, and $500.00 for the San Antonio Food Bank on behalf of the San Antonio PHC, for again having the most members represent- ed by a visiting club. Take a bow everyone! A special thank you goes to all of the RITS worker beesand to Michelle and Kevin Ware for chairing this event! Job well done! Speaking of RITS, after chairing the past 2 phantastic and successful RITS events, the Wares have graciously stepped down as chairs. Do we need to panic? Not to worry, their flip flops will be filled by our new co-chairs, Richard Presley and Pege Wright, who both stepped up to the challenge. Lets all get behind them as well and make our upcoming 20 th RITS, more funner than ever. On average, it takes about 1130 tab tops to make a pound. We are currently in competition with the South Region (25 total) Parrot Head Clubs, to see which club can collect the most #’s, with the contest ending the beginning of November. We are currently 4#’s behind the leader. All you rum drinkers need to take a break and help contribute to a worthy cause. So- lution? If all 466+ members drink a case of beer each, in both September and October, turn in your tab tops, boom, we can gather close to 20 more pounds. Some of you might want to help out others and drink their share also, I see that as a win win! A $200.00 donation to our favorite charity is at stake. Need club merchandise? You know you do! Please contact Nancy Boling at [email protected]. Money raised from the sale, helps kick start most of the phunc- tions that this club participates in on a monthly basis. Such as the Mardi Gras parade, Chili- cook-off, special happy hours, birthday party……hats, shirts, pins, magnets, koozies and more are available for purchase. Our new Election Chair will soon be asking for nominations from you on the following board positions that will be up for election this year. Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Feel free to nominate someone in the club that you deem worthy or even yourself. All nominees need to be in good standing, which means current in your dues. If unsure, contact Karen Mi- gnola at [email protected]. ALL nomination must be submitted to our election chair. Names given to others to submit, will not be honored. Nominations will be accepted be- tween 9/1/16 and 9/30/16. Good luck! Duties and responsibilities for these open positions can be found on our clubs website (gbphc.com) under the By-Lawstab. The First Labor Day The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally pro-posed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

A Nationwide Holiday

The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday — a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebra-tions of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sun-day preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

The character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone a change in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where mass displays and huge parades have proved a problem. This change, however, is more a shift in emphasis and medium of expression. Labor Day addresses by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics and government officials are given wide coverage in newspapers, radio, and tele-vision.

The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the great-est production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker.
