Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Of the 56 men who signed our Declaration of Independence, only one was a Catholic--Charles Carroll. Carroll was one of the wealthiest men in America. But because he was a Catholic, he could not vote or hold public office in his native Maryland. Because he was Catholic, commonly referred to as a papist, he was regarded as something foreign, his very religion suspect. Maryland had enacted many laws against Popery, but it wasn't alone.

There was a culture of anti-Catholicism, indeed the colonies that enacted laws against Catholics were proud of it. Carroll was willing to risk his wealth because he knew that something far more precious was at stake: freedom. He knew that an America where people were free to worship God as they saw fit would be a land where Catholics and others would flourish and prosper.

Of course, he was joined by many others who already enjoyed religious freedom and success. They had a lot to lose, and they risked it all. They sought not glory or their own ambition or profit but the good of the people, the common good. Their public service required personal sacrifice.

They all paid a heavy price...

Of those 56 who signed the Declaration of Independence, nine died of wounds or hardships during the war. Five were captured and imprisoned, and several lost wives, sons, or entire families. One lost his 13 children, and two wives were brutally treated. All were at one time or another the victims of manhunts and driven from their homes. Twelve signers had their homes completely burned. Seventeen lost everything they owned. Yet not one went back on his word. It is truly right to note, to rejoice in all that has been achieved. It is important to recognize that this has been won at great cost. It has been won by the struggle of many, indeed, the supreme cost of those who have fallen in battle and the many men and women in every walk of life who have sought to discern God's will and follow it. To do the right thing even if it's not popular. The forming of this nation didn't take place in a single day or century. We did not emancipate the slaves until the 1860s, and women did not vote until 1920. Since then each generation has taken up a contemporary challenge. A Nation is more than a bunch of individuals. Yes, we come from every race in the world, every religion, culture, yet as it says on the great seal of the united states E Pluribus Unum, out of many, we are one. Ben Franklin said famously, "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.” They were very different men, with very different politics and faith, yet if they had not persevered in unity, we wouldn't be standing here in this Independent United States. We, too, have an obligation and duty to work together to serve the common good; to keep forming and creating this nation. Each generation has challenges and uncertainties that threaten to swallow us up, yet we persevere together. It is the people in every generation that create the nation that form it and shape it. We are not the recipients of a culture; we can't wash our hands of our part and responsibility. Many people seem overwhelmed; their image might be of a man standing against the ocean and being swept away however, I'd like to suggest another image. We are the Ocean, men, women, families, children, neighborhoods. We are the culture; we have to take responsibility for it. Our nation will be renewed only when we renew our own lives when we choose faith hope and charity over fear, hate, and greed. We have to choose virtue. Independence day, exercise your own liberty, take responsibility for your life, and be a good father, mother, son, daughter. Build up your marriage, your family, make it your priority. Be a good employer, a good employee. Be a real member of the community, of the parish, of the neighborhood. Be the change we want to see, be the nation we want to be. Father of the family of nations, Open our hearts to greater love of your Son. Grant that the boundaries of nations Will not set limits to our love, And give us the courage to build a land That serves you in truth and justice. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Dear Parishioners, I’m delighted to tell you that we are re-opening for the public celebration of mass, albeit with limited capacity and certain restrictions. Last week Bishop O’Connell made the following announcement. Parish churches may begin the celebration of limited “in church” public weekend Masses with no more than 1/3 occupancy starting on June 13-14, the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, observing all require-ments listed below. Weekday “in church” public Masses with no more than 50 persons attending may begin on Monday, June 8, 2020, observing the same requirements. Pastors will determine the most fair and effective ways to ensure proper observance of those numbers. Sunday Mass St. Catharine School Playground The Sunday celebration of Mass will return with open air mass at St. Catharine School playground at 6 PM Saturday and 10:30 AM Sunday. Many people had requested an outdoor celebration of mass and the limited capacity of St. Catharine Church while observing social distancing did not make it a viable option. *Masks must be worn even outside for everyone over 2 years old while entering, exiting, and during commun-ion procession. *Social distancing practices must be observed. *Please bring your own beach chairs, blankets, and sun hats. *Strollers are permitted for children. *Umbrellas are not permitted as they will obscure visibility. *Feel free to bring water but not a picnic! *The school gymnasium will serve as an alternative venue in case inclement weather but the capacity is lim-ited to 100 and the gym is not handicapped accessible. *There will only be one entrance on Salem Avenue but all exits can be used. *Mass will be streamed live on the parish’s facebook page. St. Margaret Church Mass will be celebrated in St. Margaret Church at 4 PM Saturday and 9 AM Sunday morning. *Masks must be worn for everyone over 2 years old. *Social distancing practices must be observed. *The capacity is limited to 100 people upstairs and 25 people downstairs. *Please use designated seating in every other pew. *Only one entrance is permitted but any door can be used as an exit. *Mass will be streamed live on the parish’s facebook page.

Weddings *Weddings are permitted but limited to a wedding ceremony with a maximum of 50 people. Funerals *Funerals can commence again with a limited congregation of 50 people in St. Catharine Church, 100 people in St. Margaret Church, 50 people in St. Anne Mausoleum, and 25 people in Resurrection Mausoleum. I’m aware that a number of our parishioners have lost relatives without the comfort of funeral rites. On June 17th, a requiem mass with the Bishop will be broadcasted from St. Anne’s Mausoleum for those who have died in the Diocese of Trenton during the pandemic irrespective of the cause. I will concelebrate that mass as we remember all those who have passed here in our own parish. If you have a family member who passed during this time, please forward their name to the parish office for inclusion. More details will follow about the time of the mass and where the link can be found. Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers and Lectors will be getting an email to sign up for weekend masses through flocknote and ministry scheduler pro. No one will be auto scheduled. Altar servers will not be used at this time. I would ask you to please be patient with us as we engage in this reopening while trying to ensure your safety.

I fully understand that you have many other questions about the other sacraments. When I receive more information, I will share it with you immediately. Thank you for your continued support of the Parish in these challenging times. I truly appreciate all of the notes expressing your gratitude and encouragement for our continued liturgical and pastoral care. Please remember that our reopening plan is essentially an experiment that will be revised depending on the circumstances and requirements and will undoubtedly evolve. I need everyone to continue to be cooperative and patient to make all this work. With God’s grace, I’m confident and hopeful it will.

Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may ex-perience your healing love. Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care. Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neigh-bors from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease the knows no borders.

Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” Come to our aid now, that we may experience your healing love.

Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow. Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace. Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace. Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace. Be with the leaders of all na-tions. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth. Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Jesus Christ, stay with us as we en-dure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace. Jesus Christ, heal us.

BAPTISMS AND BAPTISM PREPARATION CLASSES: Baptisms are held on the 2nd & 4th Sunday of each month. Baptism Preparation Classes are held on the 1st Tuesday of each month and must be taken before the Baptism. We urge parents to take the class before the baby’s birth. EUCHARISTIC DEVOTION: Weekly Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is held EVERY Wednesday following the 8am mass in St. Catharine Chapel, Benediction at 4pm . MARRIAGES: All couples planning marriage should notify the parish at least one year in advance. The Church sees marriage in one’s own parish as the most proper arrangement, therefore, people who reside in St. Catharine - St. Margaret Parish have a right to be married here. Others should receive the sacrament in their own parishes. The bride, the groom, or their parents must be registered and living in this Parish for at least one year. Pre-Cana or Engaged Encounter Weekend is required as is participation in FOCCUS; a self-diagnostic inventory designed to help couples learn more about themselves and their unique relationship.
