We are blessed to have a thriving and successful religious education program at St Catharine-St Margaret parish. This year we have approximately 430 students enrolled in the religious education program.
Since the publication of the English edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church in 1992, the number of guidelines, standards and curricula, and formation programs have grown dramatically, providing content and structure for handing on the faith, and training those who work in catechesis. Currently most of the teachers in our CCD program, have completed the courses of study provided by the Diocese, and are certified.
Standardization and certification have brought about great gains in terms of the expertise and effectiveness of those who are teaching the faith to our children and passing on the faith to the next generation. We are aware also, of the danger of trying to make a profession out of a ministry. Some critics have questioned whether the church in the USA is modeling itself on our closest secular counterpart – the U.S. educational system. The array of certification programs, competency standards, evaluations, mission statements, strategic plans and “best practices” in the race for educational excellence seems to some to reflect the concerns, and the ethos of the secular society in which we live.
We must always remember that no matter how well trained are our catechists, we must avoid the institutional mindset and include in our teaching model an emphasis on salvation history, biblical narrative and liturgical life, as a way of not just teaching about the faith but also making the faith come alive for a new generation of young Christians. Pope Paul V1 recognized this when he appealed to everyone involved in handing on the faith to the next generation, to move beyond the conventional notions of teaching to offer the world an “authentic witness of life that goes beyond societal norms” and gives “hope
in something that is not seen and that one would not dare to
imagine” (Evangelii Nuntiandi, No. 21)
We pay tribute to, and thank, on behalf of our parish, Fr Will and Tammy Sablom and the dedicated and generous catechists who have assumed the awesome responsibility of passing on the faith to the next generation in our parish.
Fr Harry Cullen.
Thanksgiving Day Mass
We are having a special festive Thanksgiving Mass on
Thanksgiving morning at 9.30am. After you have put the
turkey in the oven, pack up your family and bring them to
St. Catharine Church at 9.30AM. What better way to put
your family in the festive Thanksgiving mood than by
starting the day in thanks around the altar.
Keep Christ in Christmas As creeping secularization chips away at the religious significance of Christ-mas, the tradition of honoring the birth of Jesus by saying or displaying the word “Christmas” is being pushed from the public square. The battle for Christmas is not new to the Knights of Columbus, which has publicly promoted the true meaning of Christmas for more than 40 years through its multi-faceted “Keep Christ in Christmas” program. The Order’s public service Christmas announcements have reached millions of television viewers and radio listeners since they began airing in the 1980s. In doing our part lo-cally, the Knights of Columbus Council 5611 will be selling "Keep Christ In Christmas" car magnets and stickers after all Masses the weekends of November 21-22 and 28-29. The cost is $5.00 per item. It is our hope that every car in the parish proudly displays these items during the CHRISTMAS
season.
Turkey Collection for
Mother of Mercy Parish, Asbury Park
For the past few years we have been collecting turkeys on behalf of Mother of Mercy Parish. We also have been collecting food each month for this parish. The St. Vincent de Paul Society, of Mother of Mercy Parish, distributes donated turkeys and other makings for Thanksgiving Dinners to needy families in the Asbury Park community. This year will be collecting turkeys and other related Thanksgiving foods for Mother of Mercy Parish on November 24, 2015. The collection point will be in St. Margaret’s Parking lot. Donations can be dropped off from 9:00 AM to noon. Please consider a donation to this outreach effort.
St. Rose High School
Make Up Placement Exam
Saturday November 21 at 8:00 am, St. Rose High School will be holding a make up High School Placement Test for 8th graders who are applying for the 2016-2017 academic year. Happy 100th Birthday
JANET LUCAS KOKOLL
Janet Kokoll calls herself a proud Polish Woman, and that she certainly is! Born in Newark, New Jersey, on November 23, 1915, Janet married her husband Anthony Kokoll in 1935. They lived in Newark for the first years of their marriage and then moved to Hillside when their 4 children started arriving. Marcia was the first child, then came Anthony, Kenneth and Robert Peter, the only one to leave New Jersey.
As the children grew, in 1953 Anthony and Janet moved the fam-ily to the house in which Janet lives today. The children enjoyed living in Spring Lake Heights and all 4 attended St. Catha-rine School. Janet was a very involved volunteer at St. Catha-rine’s. She taught CCD, was a member of Catholic Daugh-ters and was a chaperone for many CYO functions. She worked in the cafeteria at St. Rose High School while her children were there. She was a nursing volunteer at Camp Kilmer during World War II. She also worked at Monmouth Medical Center for 10 years, and later at Manasquan Savings Bank.
She finally retired in 1980.After Janet’s husband, Anthony, died suddenly from a heart attack in 1975, she was content to watch her family grow with the addition of 8 grand-children.
Janet lives a quiet life now. Her oldest son Anthony lives with her as does her pet cat Muffy, who makes sure that no one disturbs her. Janet’s greatest pleasure these days is watching Mass every day on EWTN. She loves visits from old friends and is happy to have them bring her all the latest news!
Happy Birthday Janet!

Parish Liturgy Committee We have established a parish Liturgy Committee
to anticipate and plan our liturgical celebrations
in both churches of the parish. If you are
interested in becoming involved in this most
important task, please consider volunteering. You
can give your name to Mary at the office 732 449

will be published in the Bulletin in the weeks
ahead.
Parish Spirituality Committee We have also formed a Spirituality committee to

musical events for the members of the parish. If
you would like to be involved in this exciting
activity, call Mary at the Rectory 732 449 5765 or
just show up at our next meeting—which will be
published in the Bulletin in the weeks ahead. Mary’s Child Pro-Life Ministry
“Stand up and be counted.” My husband always has the same answer when I ask him if his football team is winning: “Yes, they are always winning…until they lose.” We often feel this way as defenders of innocent life…that we are winning--like when we found out over 500 babies were rescued during the recent 40 Days for Life prayer vigils held nationwide...but then we continue to feel the heart-wrenching loss of millions of our unborn brothers and sisters each year. Who was it that said, “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing?” Elie Wiesel? Referring to the Nazi Holocaust? The same can be said today if we believe that our unborn brothers and sisters are worth not only our love but our very lives dedicated to defending and protecting them in any way we can. They need everyone’s help. So please join us as we plan another trip to the
March for Life in Washington, D.C.
Friday. January 22, 2016. Please also consider joining our ministry or assisting us in other ways. You can contact us at [email protected] or contact your parish representative to our ministry. On behalf of the babies, thank you.
