FROM THE DESK OF FR. ARENS

My friends,

After four weeks of preparation during the season of Advent, our Christmas observance is now upon us. During this celebration, we contemplate many important aspects of our Lord's coming to earth in human form and what it means for humanity.

The most obvious aspect of Christmas, I think, is the fact that Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Creator of the world and all it contains, came to earth in human form, as a tiny child. There is no human being since Adam and Eve who has been alive who has not experienced this stage of life. In fact, it is the most common experience that humanity will ever know. It is extremely beautiful and joyful, but also extremely ordinary.

It’s easy to see from this, that God the Son came to earth to show us that He wants to have an ordinary, day to day, role in our lives. He wants to be there at the most joyful and celebratory times, but also in the ordinary, everyday times. He couldn't have come in a more ordinary way to show us that He wants to be in every aspect of our day to day lives, especially the ordinary.

This message of our Savior speaks boldly, especially to those who only want Jesus to be a part of their lives at Christmas. Jesus will enter our hearts through our beautiful celebrations at Christmas, but He wants more. He wants to enter our hearts on the Sunday after Christmas, on the first Sunday of June, on Tuesday of the third week in October, and in fact on every day and in every moment of our lives. He wants to enter our hearts through the Sacrament of Confession, through our daily prayers, and through our participation at weekend Mass every weekend and Holy Day of Obligation.

Christmas shows us how much God wants to enter into our lives to raise up every moment. Our lives can be so much better with faith and with putting that faith into action. Jesus wants to be there and invites us to open our hearts to Him, especially during Christmas. He waits for us, and assures us that there is no one who is so far away that they can't be brought back into His heart.

Christmas is not only a promise that God will be there for us, but also an invitation. We are always welcome to approach Jesus and grow in our faith. But as with all things, this is a limited time offer. It lasts as long as our earthly lives do. And so, now is the "acceptable time," now is the "time of salvation" (2 Cor. 6:2). Jesus is there and will be there for us. Will we take Him up on His offer? This is a great question to ponder at Christmas.

A blessed Christmas to all. Know of my extreme gratitude for how you are generous and kind to me as your priest. I know many of you keep me in your daily prayers, and for these I am most grateful. Thanks too for all who have sent cards and gifts. Every day I pray for each of our parishes and ask God to keep us all safe from harm and filled with the gift of faith. May you know of His presence and joy in your lives.

On Monday after Christmas, I will be taking vacation for two weeks for some rest and rejuvenation. Next weekend, please welcome Fr. Anthony Pick for the Masses in the Tri Parishes. May God bless us all with the peace that only He can give and show us the beauty and goodness of the great mystery of Christmas.

In Christ, Fr. Arens
