Christmas Message

“Christ has only one mother in the flesh, but we all bring forth Christ in faith.” (St. Augustine)

These words of St. Augustine, which come to us across the centuries, are a wonderful invitation to us at this Christmas season. St. Augustine points out that we are called, like Mary, to give birth to Christ in our world. We are called to a deep openness to God’s creative Spirit, to listen attentively and willingly to God’s word, so that in us and through us, Christ will be born today. We welcome this working of the Spirit, for we are called to be Christ’s hands and heart in our world today – a world that so needs the light, the peace, the justice and the joy that Christ brings. As we rejoice in this dignity that we share, let us pray for each other, and for our world, that all people, everywhere, may know this peace, and experience this joy. May you and your families be richly blessed with these gifts, at Christmas and always.

Fr. John Malazdrewich, OMI Pastor – St. Mark Parish, Gatineau, Quebec

Christmas message from our Archbishop Christmas is for children. So say many people. According to them, New Year’s Day is for friends, Valentine’s Day for lovers, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day for parents … and Christmas for children. It’s understandable, what with all those stories of angel choruses in the heavens, Santa Claus coming down the chimney and snowmen muffled in their scarves; with toy-filled displays and gift-strewn evergreens; with family gatherings and abundant meals and unending desserts. All of this enchants our children, and I rejoice in it. However, the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord is based on a series of stories written by and for adults. These stories recall deeply mystical events, dramatic situations, men and women seeking God in the midst of life’s chaos. We remember Mary, perplexed by the angel’s annunciation; Joseph, shaken by the discovery of Mary’s pregnancy; the Magi, intrigued by an astrological sign; Herod, killing so many children in jealous anger; Simeon, prophesying that Jesus would be a sign of opposition; the Holy Family, fleeing to Egypt as refugees. These stories were written for adults who, like you and me, long to understand the “sign of opposition” that is the crucified Christ and to plumb the “inner thoughts” of their own hearts. For them, the attention given to children is like a sacrament of the affection and mercy that God showed to all humankind in the birth of Jesus. It reminds us that too many children, adults and older people receive no affection, no mercy in their lives. We have a responsibility for them. I pray that you will celebrate an adult Christmas, as attentive to the child in you as to the children around you. God became a child so that we could become adults in him. Merry Christmas! † Paul-André Durocher A warm welcome to St. Mark’s! Welcome to those who want to make their faith-home here with us. You may be new to Aylmer, or you may have been away for a while. Be assured that we love to have you among us! We would appreciate it if you introduced yourself to one of our hospitality ministers, or to Father John. It would also help if you could take the time to fill out a registration form, which you can get from a hospitality minister. The next time you are with us, you can drop off the registration form in the collection basket; give it to one of the hospitality ministers or to the priest. Welcome!! Liturgy of the Word for children during the 9:00 and 11:00 Masses One of the ways we help children in our parish to become active participants in the liturgy of the Word is to celebrate it with them in the Children's Liturgy room. In that space, we do the same thing that the adults are doing – we read the readings together, reflect together on the readings, profess our faith, and raise up in prayer the needs of our world. We then come back to the church for the Eucharistic prayer. All

children between 5 and 12 are welcome to join us on any Sunday – it is not necessary to sign up children to participate in the children's liturgy. If you have grandchildren or guests visiting, they are welcome to join us as well. We also welcome parents to accompany shy children on their first visit to help put them at ease. February Baptism Preparation - Register now The preparation for Baptism includes sessions on two consecutive Tuesday evenings, with baptism taking place during one of the Sunday Masses. The next sessions will be on January 31 and February 7, with the baptisms to be held beginning the weekend of February 11 and 12. Please share this with friends and family members. You can register on-line from our website, or by contacting the parish office. Adults wanting to be baptized or confirmed Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist are known as the sacraments of initiation. We usually associate these sacraments (which include First Communion) with children. Increasingly, older teenagers and adults are realizing that they have been baptized, but have not celebrated any other sacraments. Or that they have made their First Communion, but not been confirmed. This is quite commonplace today, and provides us with an opportunity to journey with adults who wish to be confirmed and join the community at the Eucharistic table. Together, we prepare for these sacraments in an adult way, respecting the life experience and faith journey of each person. Would you like to be baptized? Would you like to be confirmed? Would you like to journey with other adults who are preparing for these sacraments? If so, please contact Julie Cool by e-mail ([email protected]) or by leaving a message at the parish office at (819) 684-6926.

St. Mark’s Office Hours over the Christmas/New Year’s Period The office will be closed from December 26 to January 2; however staff will be checking phone messages and e-mails. There will be no weekday Masses on Wednesday, December 28 and Thursday, December 29.
