-191- SUMMARY The Otaku in Transition Renato RIVERA This paper will act as an extension to the themes introduced in my last essay, The Populariza- tion of Geek Culture and the Marginalization of Otaku Culture, in which I presented a model of society change through the attitudes in consumption of popular culture. Basically it showed that overseas mainstream society is growing evermore complex in terms of popular culture and new media entering through subculture channels into the mass culture, while the situation in Japan is very much different, with subcultures gradually developing within themselves instead of seeking general acceptance. This paper will turn its attention to some specific reasons why this may be occurring, and will look closer at some internal struggles and signs of disunity within what main- stream society calls the otaku community, as well as describing instances which may point to an albeit slightly late conformation to the previously stated model, which would bring about greater possibilities for creativity and acceptance within society. Specifically, I will use up-to-date information and recent publications to illustrate the timely situation of the otaku in Japanese society today, drawing examples mainly from the newest writing by the prominent author in otaku studies, Toshio Okada. Starting from his critical comments on the current state of the Japanese otaku, I will look at the moe phenomenon and contrast it with the rising value of otaku culture within the international art world, represented by Takashi Muraka- mi. Lastly, I will tie all of these issues together to paint an overall picture of how the otaku seem to be becoming further detached from mainstream society in some ways, and are integrating with it in others, and what this could mean for the future.

The Otaku in Transition

Renato RIVERA

This paper will act as an extension to the themes introduced in my last essay, “The Populariza-

tion of Geek Culture and the Marginalization of Otaku Culture”, in which I presented a model of

society change through the attitudes in consumption of popular culture. Basically it showed that

overseas mainstream society is growing evermore complex in terms of popular culture and new

media entering through subculture channels into the mass culture, while the situation in Japan is

very much different, with subcultures gradually developing within themselves instead of seeking

general acceptance. This paper will turn its attention to some specific reasons why this may be

occurring, and will look closer at some internal struggles and signs of disunity within what main-

stream society calls the “otaku community”, as well as describing instances which may point to an

albeit slightly late conformation to the previously stated model, which would bring about greater

possibilities for creativity and acceptance within society.

Specifically, I will use up-to-date information and recent publications to illustrate the timely

situation of the otaku in Japanese society today, drawing examples mainly from the newest writing

by the prominent author in otaku studies, Toshio Okada. Starting from his critical comments on

the current state of the Japanese otaku, I will look at the moe phenomenon and contrast it with the

rising value of otaku culture within the international art world, represented by Takashi Muraka-

mi.

Lastly, I will tie all of these issues together to paint an overall picture of how the otaku seem

to be becoming further detached from mainstream society in some ways, and are integrating with

it in others, and what this could mean for the future.

具体的に,主にオタク研究の第一人者である岡田斗司夫氏の新執筆の文献から例を取り上げ

最後に,これらのテーマを結びつけ,ある意味でオタクというものがどのようにメインスト
