As exciting as this event is to modern humanity, it pales in comparison with the excitement of the magi’s an- cient “discovery” more than two thousand years ago when a star in the Eastern sky lead them to the savior of mankind. “When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. [...] and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frank- incense, and myrrh.” [Matthew 2:10, 11] When we think of Christmas are we filled with this same joy the Magi felt? Or is it something more mundane? An extra day off to overeat and stock up on the latest and greatest consumer product. If the magi, who by many accounts had no real reason to care about Christ’s birth, reacted this way, then how much more joy should we be feeling over the birth of Christ? First off, why were the magi even there? Consider that they were pagan priests, seers, astrologers and astronomers. They knew about the stars, which is why they would follow it in the first place because to them the behavior of this star was significant. We also know that they, being learned men, would have had knowledge of the prophecies of Christ. So it was not completely lost on them the path they were follow- ing. St. John Chrysostom, in his homily on the second chapter of Matthew, says God called the wise men by the things that are familiar to them, for being astrologers they were naturally astonished at such a large star. He says that God, for the salvation of those in error, allowed Himself to be served by astrologers, normally used to serve the devil, so that He might gently draw the Magi away from their customs and lead them toward a higher wisdom. When we chant the dismissal hymn of the feast “Thy Nativity, O Christ our God, hath shined the light of knowledge upon the world;” we recog- nize the effect His birth had on the world and how He drew all of Crea- tion to Him, not just those who currently believe in him. Jesus said, “for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” For us the magi are a measuring stick of our own faith and represent the discov- ery of something completely new in the birth of Christ. Discovering Christ’s Love by Deacon Daniel

Thy Nativity, O Christ our God, hath shined the light of knowledge upon the

world; for thereby they that worshipped the stars were instructed by a star to

worship Thee, the Sun of Righteousness, and to know Thee, the Dayspring from

on high. O Lord, glory be to Thee.

--Apolytikion of the Nativity of Christ

On November 12, 2014 the European Space Agency made the first ever landing

of a spacecraft on a comet. Since then there has been much excitement about the

discoveries we might make concerning life in the universe. This is the one of the

most significant accomplishments in space exploration we have seen in many

years. There is even audio of what the comet sounds like hurling through space,

which went viral on the internet and social media! As exciting as this event is to

modern humanity, it pales in comparison with the excitement of the magi’s an-

cient “discovery” more than two thousand years ago when a star in the Eastern sky lead them to the

savior of mankind. “When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. [...] and fell down

and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frank-

incense, and myrrh.” [Matthew 2:10, 11] When we think of Christmas are we filled with this same joy

the Magi felt? Or is it something more mundane? An extra day off to overeat and stock up on the latest

and greatest consumer product. If the magi, who by many accounts had no real reason to care about

Christ’s birth, reacted this way, then how much more joy should we be feeling over the birth of Christ?

First off, why were the magi even there? Consider that they were pagan priests, seers, astrologers and

astronomers. They knew about the stars, which is why they would follow it in the first place because to

them the behavior of this star was significant. We also know that they,

being learned men, would have had knowledge of the prophecies of

Christ. So it was not completely lost on them the path they were follow-

ing. St. John Chrysostom, in his homily on the second chapter of

Matthew, says God called the wise men by the things that are familiar to

them, for being astrologers they were naturally astonished at such a large

star. He says that God, for the salvation of those in error, allowed Himself

to be served by astrologers, normally used to serve the devil, so that He

might gently draw the Magi away from their customs and lead them

toward a higher wisdom.

When we chant the dismissal hymn of the feast “Thy Nativity, O Christ

our God, hath shined the light of knowledge upon the world;” we recog-

nize the effect His birth had on the world and how He drew all of Crea-

tion to Him, not just those who currently believe in him. Jesus said, “for

the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” For us

the magi are a measuring stick of our own faith and represent the discov-

ery of something completely new in the birth of Christ. They remind us

that to have Christ in our hearts is to fall down and worship Him and

give thanks for coming into the world. They show us the power

of Christ to act even in places we think He might not be able.

Parish Council President's Message

Dear Saint Demetrios parishioners,

This is my final column as your Parish Council President. I have

enjoyed working with the council members for six years and am

grateful for their support in my terms as president. I know that

being a Parish Council member is a great responsibility and I

congratulate the new members who will be elected at the

General Assembly for their willingness to serve our parish.

Thank you to everyone who made my job as president go

smoothly; the staff, the council and parish members.

November was Stewardship Month and it was a success, thanks

to John Ales and Pam Plumis. Ministry Sunday showcased the

many ministries of the church and was a wonderful opportunity

for people to see all of the good causes their stewardship

supports. I encourage everyone to turn in your stewardship card

for 2015 and also to consider serving in one of the ministries of

our church.

The Christmas season is upon us and I hope you will take the

time to come to the church services offered during this busy time

of the year. It is an opportunity to focus on the true meaning of

Christmas and for spiritual renewal. I wish you all a blessed

Christmas and a very happy new year!

Sincerely, George Tsantilas

Philoptochos News December 2014

I want to wish you all a blessed Christmas season and thank you

for your support of all of our Philoptochos ministries this year. I

look forward to working with anyone who wishes to join us in

the coming year as we minister to the less fortunate in our com-

munity ~ all are welcome! Gratefully, Susan

Thank You from the Sinatra Chocolate Wine Ball

Sunday, November 16th, Camp Agape Northwest was celebrated

with an elegant evening at Herban Feast. The 6th annual celebra-

tion featured a seasonal dinner menu, Washington wines and

chocolatiers, and the music of Frank Sinatra. Proceeds from the

event will benefit Camp Agape, a camp at no cost to children

with cancer and their families. My heartfelt thanks to all who

participated in making this year’s event such a success!

Thank You to the Panos Family!

Our chapter once again wishes to thank the Panos family for

their generous support of our program to feed the homeless men

who come to St Martin de Porres Mens Shelter in search of

nourishment. Their letter reads…Over the course of the past

year, we understand that almost 5,000 meals have been prepared

by Philoptochos thanks to your dedication to this cause. Our

family would like to renew our commitment to sponsor this

worthy cause for the 17th consecutive year in loving memory

of our wife and mother, Harula Panos. Realizing the greater

need for financial support for hot meals at the shelter beyond the

holiday occasions, we have been delighted to partner with the St

Demetrios Ladies Philoptochos Society and to sponsor your

monthly program to feed the homeless on a full year basis and

for the years to come. Thank you again for your service.

Sincerely, Steve, Artemios and Rebecca, Stavros, Lula and

Chloe, Alexander and Christina, Lily and Nicholas Panos.

Regional Philoptochos Conference January 31, 2015

A regional conference is being planned at Saint Demetrios

for Saturday, January 31, 2015. Our Metropolis President

Jeannie Ranglas will join us for this very special day. One of

our sessions will be presented by New Horizon Ministries, a

local organization partnering with youth in Seattle to exit street

life. Another will be our own Jubilee Women’s Center. Speak-

ers from New Beginnings will address the issue of multigen-

erational domestic violence. The day will begin with coffee

and registration and lunch will be served. There is no charge

for the event but reservations are needed to plan for lunch and

child care. Reservations can be made through Maria

Barbas:[email protected] or 206.631.2505. Please

mark your calendars for this informative day. All are welcome, men, women and youth!

Winter is Coming

Please consider what you might be able to share with the less

fortunate. Downstairs in the large hall by the steps is a barrel

for St. Philaret to collect blankets, sleeping bags, men’s items

(socks, gloves, hats and coats). If you have the small soaps and

shampoo left over from your vacation hotel, please consider

packaging them in zip lock bags and donating them. For fur-

ther information, you may contact Jillian Chandler at the

Church of the Assumption at 206.323.8557 or Chris Macris at

St Demetrios.

Please give for Hungry Children

There are barrels in the Narthex and downstairs in the hallway

for Northwest Harvest. Donations of food are especially

needed during this time of economic hardship for so many.

Monetary donations are also accepted, every little bit helps.....

no donation is too small. You may have noticed longer lines at

food banks all around the city. Your donation (cash or food)

will be gratefully received as the number of hungry families

has increased considerably. If you don't want to carry canned

goods to church, please consider a donation to your local food

bank.

Discovering Christ’s Love

The problem we have in our own spiritual lives is that we have

lost that sense of discovery and excitement. We allow ourselves to

become like the child who receives that most-wanted toy for

Christmas, but by February has forgotten where the toy even is.

That initial thrill will always subside, but we must continue to

strive to foster that joy of Christ in our own hearts because we

know this leads to something much greater, eternal life. We allow

the cares of the world to drown out His triumphant message.

God will always meet us where we are at, even though we exist in

a fallen world separated from Him. While he does not condone our

sins, He does pour grace upon those who struggle to be in com-

munion with Him. Elder Amphilochios of Patmos tells us,

“Cultivate love towards the Person of Christ to such an extent that,

when you pronounce His name, tears fall from your eyes. Your

heart must really burn. Then He will become your teacher. He will

be your Guide, your Brother, your Father, and your Elder[...]" The

Church provides us with the way to cultivate that love in our lives.

When we deny our fleshly desires through fasting, when we dig

into Scripture and try to discern its meaning, when we worship in

the Divine services, these are all acts of discovery of Christ in

which we are cultivating Him in our hearts. When we do this we

understand the joy the magi showed for the newborn Christ and we

can celebrate His birth with just as much fervor.

A blessed feast of the Nativity to us and all pious Orthodox Chris-

tians! May the light of the knowledge of our the Lord and Savior’s

birth shine on all the world.

Merry Christmas!
