IN OUR PARISH RESPECT LIFE MONTH

Choral Texts and Translations

Teach Me, O Lord ............................................... Philip Stopford

Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall keep it with my whole heart. Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for there-in is my desire. Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness. O turn away mine eyes lest they behold vanity and quicken me in thy way. O stablish thy word in thy servant, that I may fear thee. Amen.

(Ps 119:33-38)

Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life ................................... Harold Friedell

Come, my way, my truth, my life: Such a way as gives us breath; Such a truth as ends all strife, Such a life a killeth death.

Come, my light, my feast, my strength: Such a light as shows a feast, Such a feast as mends in length, Such a strength as makes his guest.

Come, my joy, my love, my heart: Such a joy as none can move, Such a love as none can part, Such a heart as joys in love.

(George Herbert, 1593-1633)

School Open House If you are interested in Catholic education for your children, plan to attend the St. Jane de Chantal School Open House this Monday, October 21 from 9:00 to 11:00 am. Our parent tour guides will take you to classrooms, offering you the opportunity to visit Pre-K to Grade 8. You will have time to observe classes, and meet teachers and students. Come visit our "Best of Bethesda" school. Simon Says for Hearing Simon Says is our newest service opportunity at de Chantal! Simon Says was organized by Jack Hill, Harper Dexter, and the Hill and Dexter families. Both Jack and Harper were born with a loss of hearing. A life with hearing aids and hearing issues is not always an easy one, especially when you are a kid! Jack and Harper wanted to bring awareness about hearing difficulties that kids face around the world, and raise money to buy hearing aids for children in need. De Chantal students joined together to raise money for the Oticon Hearing Foundation by participating in a school wide game of Simon Says Says—a game where being able to hear is of the utmost importance! The school also came together in an assembly to learn more about the Oticon organization. Thank you to all who helped support Jack, Harper, and our newest service project.

The Capital of Basketball by John McNamara On Sunday, November 3, Politics and Prose (5015 Connecticut Ave, NW) will host a posthumous book launch for The Capital of Basketball, the final work of John McNamara, Class of '75. Many in our parish family knew John and the McNamara family as fellow parishioners,

classmates, and friends over the years, and shared in their grief on his loss following the Annapolis Capital newspaper shooting on June 28, 2018. Please join the family in honoring his life's work, "a story of civil rights heroes and NBA legends […] history few others could have accomplished, but John, who was born in Washington and never left the area, dedicated his life to it" (Washington Post).

Today’s theme is perseverance — Moses keeping his hands upraised throughout the battle,

Paul urging Timothy to stay with the task of preaching and teaching, and

the widow appealing to the corrupt judge. To be faithful stewards of God’s gifts, we, too,

must persevere in the roles to which we are called.

Second Collection: Mission Sunday The second collection this weekend, October 19/20, is the annual collection supporting World Mission Sunday. This collection is unique in that it is a global effort for the entire Church. It is a moment each year to provide for the building up of over one thousand local churches in Asia and Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, an area that covers more than half the territory of the globe. Through the work of these churches, and their witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God’s love and mercy that renews hope and peace. Poor Box The Poor Box next weekend, October 26/27, will benefit St. Martin’s Cloak. In the spirit of St. Martin, who tore his military cloak in half to share with a beggar, St. Martin’s Cloak provides financial and other assistance to those in need, particularly those in our parish. Financial assistance is completely confidential. St. Martin’s Cloak partners with various religious and civic organizations in Montgomery County to provide this emergency support.
