Abdominal Wall Reconstruction

Needs Assessment: Surgeons that encounter patients with complex abdominal wall defects need to recognize and implement appropriate medical management to ensure the best care, reduce the risk of recurrence, and alleviate chronic pain. Surgeons must be able to correctly identify the anatomy and physiology and access the different options available in biomaterials. They must be able to identify techniques that are best used for better patient outcomes.

Course Overview: This two day educational course is designed for surgeons to recognize techniques and surgical management of abdominal wall reconstruction. It will explore helpful ways in which to manage the difficult care of abdominal wall reconstruction. Surgeons will be expected to complete an evaluation to demonstrate competence. Surgeons will also be offered an opportunity for self-assessment credits toward Part 2 of the ABS MOC Program. The course will consist of didactic lectures, discussion, and hands-on animate practice.

Objectives:Completion of this course will enable participants to:

1. Identify the anatomy and physiology in abdominal wall reconstruction

2. Identify techniques in laparoscopic abdominal wall repairs

3. Differentiate biomaterials used in reconstruction

4. Identify techniques available for component separation

5. Identify the management of abdominal wall repair in the obese patient

6. Identify the technique in umbilicus repairs

7. Identify the management of chronic pain after hernia repair

AccreditationThe Ohio State University Medical Center, Center for Continuing Medical Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.
