    The 1st MarineDivision Association

The Executive Committee has beenconducting weekly teleconferencessince late August 2009 to deal with the

    Association financial problems. We tar-

geted January 1, 2010 to measure the

effects of reducing staff hours and other

office expenses and our plea for dona-

tions. I’m pleased to report that we have

increased the General Fund by meeting

our financial goals as of January 1, 2010.

Member donations, annual dues, and the

    life member assessments continue to

move the Association to a more stable

    financial condition. Also, the Association

was named in the estate of Sgt. Chester S.

Marsh of A-1 Engrs, WWII and received

$11,885. God bless Marine Marsh for his

    generous gift.

    The 1st Marine Division Association

    attended the 69th Division Anniversary

February 1-3, 2010 at Camp Pendleton.

We held the Chapter Rep, Director and

Scholarship meetings on February 1. The

directors concurred with the life member

assessment of $25, but eliminated the raf-

fle of a % of the paid assessment. Note

that the life member assessment will be

considered paid if donations made in 2010

plus assessment total or exceed $25. The

Executive Committee, in their meeting of

    March 19, 2010, approved a blue diamond

patch for all life members who pay their

    assessments.

    The 69th Anniversary, with 147

    Association members in attendance, total-

ing 502 guests, was a great success.

    Executive Director Colonel Len Hayes

was placed in charge of the Association’s

involvement, and he coordinated with the

division staff to make it a memorable

    event. Division Commander Major

General Richard P. Mills was a gracious

host, and he mingled closely with

    Association members.

The Anniversary was dedicated to the

WWII Association members. Part 1 of

“Pacific” was presented and shown by

technical advisor Captain Dale Dye, a for-

mer Marine, at the division banquet. He

previewed the HBO series which started

    in March 2010.

I presented a plaque from the

Association to General Mills at the ban-

    quet, recognizing the hospitality dis-

played by him and his staff to Association

members. The Anniversary was also a

    financial success, providing over $7,000

    for the Association.

New office space for the Association

has been reviewed and approved by the

Executive Committee. The new space will

cost slightly more, but it will improve

office efficiency and morale. The lease

contract was reviewed and approved by

    the Financial Review Committee, our

    Insurance Committee, and our Legal

Officer, Dave Franklin. The move to 403

    Freeman Street, Oceanside, CA 92054

    was completed in April 2010.

    President’s MessageMichael J. Carone

Member donations, annual dues, and thelife member assess-ments continue to move the Associationto a more stable financial condition.

Quests & Queries Anyone left from 549th Platoon, 1943?

I am wondering if any of my boot camp platoon members

are still alive. I was in the 549th Platoon, San Diego, 1943.

Our DIs were Sgt M. D. Robertson and Cpl W. M. Griffy. (I

am the end man on the right, second row from the bottom in

    the photo below.)

I will gladly correspond with anyone who was in that pla-

    toon.

Incidentally, I was assigned to L-3-5 after boot camp.

Elmer Byokawski I am looking for information about my father, Elmer

Byokawski. I requested his records and got a unsuccessful

response back. My problem is I have limited info on him.

Everyone who would have any is dead. All I know by look-

ing at a picture I have of him is that he was in the 1st Mar

    Div, 5th Marines.

I assume he was in during

    WWII, as he was on

    Guadalcanal. I understand he

was wounded at Peleliu, but I

    don’t remember who told me

    that.

    On my birth certificate, he

    is listed as Elmer Byokawski.

    There is no middle initial.

One of the pictures I have is

my dad and his aunt. She told

me when I was 11 or 12, and

after he had died, that the pic-

tures were taken after he got

back from the “Canal.” He was a corporal in the pictures, in

which he was wearing his dress blues with a 1st MarDiv

patch on his sleeve with Guadalcanal through it. This is all I

    have to work with.

Are any Marines left alive who might have known him?

    Any help would be appreciated.

contact the family of Marine “Shorty” Downs (or Downes),

father of four, KIA June 19, 1945, K/3/5, 1st Marine

Division. He was a Tennessee native. Shorty’s real first

    name is not known.

Downs was killed on Kunishi Ridge in Okinawa. We’ve

Hopefully, someone has access to casualty lists and

    January-February-March 2010January-February-March 2010 The Old Breed News

Having just returned from our Division69th Anniversary at Camp Pendleton, Ithink it is appropriate to report on some of

the activities. We were able to attend some

units even though the Division is in a state of

flux preparing to deploy to Afghanistan in

March. We were advised by MajGen Mills,

Division Commanding Officer, that the date

of 23 January 2010 was an important event.

That was the day the Marines were pulled

out of Iraq. The Army will take over the tran-

sition to Iraqi security forces. The Marines

have a skeleton crew policing up the brass

    and getting the equipment home.

We had a great Anniversary dinner. There

were over 400 people in attendance. Two

retired General Officers of the Marine Corps,

    MajGen Hoffman, Guadalcanal veteran, and

    MajGen McMonogal. Two active duty

General Officers, MajGen Mills and MajGen

    Jackson, were also in attendance.

General Hoffman gave a splendid talk on

his time on Guadalcanal and his capture of a

Japanese bugle. He is an accomplished musi-

cian and treated us with a bugle call or two.

We had a great review of the first hour of

the ongoing HBO series, “The Pacific.” I

urge all who possibly can to watch and enjoy

    the series.

The theme of the Anniversary was to

honor our WWII veterans, especially the

Guadalcanal veterans. If you were not there,

you missed a spectacular event. The

    Anniversary celebration was shorter than

usual, but well organized and beneficial to

    those in attendance.

    The Reunion Site Destination Committee

decided, and the Board of Directors

approved, to seek the 2011 Reunion in

Arlington, VA. on the Potomac, near the

Marine Corps Historical Museum and other

special places in and around Washington,

    DC.

This is my message to the membership.

Every one of us has, at one time or anoth-

er, been asked the question, “What is the

    First Marine Division Association?” The

answer may vary, depending on the ques-

tioner, the context, and the time available.

The shortest and simplest answer is that the

    First Marine Division Association represents

the oldest and most decorated Division in the

Corps. This is, of course an accurate, but nec-

    essarily incomplete, response. Any true

    understanding of the Association must

include an explanation of how we in FMDA

strive through our service to achieve more

than the goal of each individual project.

By working together, we strive to estab-

lish the simple foundation of a better friend-

ship, trust, honesty and hope. The mission of

FMDA is to represent the best of what our

Corps stands for; Marines and Sailors who

now serve or who have served come togeth-

er as a “Family of Warriors” and share that

unexplained quality that makes us stand

apart, known as “Esprit de Corps.”

Our annual reunions and anniversary cel-

ebrations provide a venue for all generations

of Warriors to gather and enjoy the Family of

Arms that our beloved Division represents.

We honor our past heroes and salute the cur-

rent generation that is writing history in Iraq

and Afghanistan today and on unknown

    shores tomorrow.

Our Outreach Program pledges that we,

the “Older Brothers” of our family, stand

ready to mentor our younger brothers and

sisters and assist their children with our

Scholarship Program and a helping hand

from our local chapters. We stand ready to

help them relocate after their active service,

find employment, and receive benefits of

    service that have been promised.

    These programs help shape responsible

citizens for better communities – enhanced

by opened eyes and open minds. Active duty

Marines in the 1st Division and those who

have recently completed their tour will be

    indelibly marked by their experiences.

    Throughout their lives–both now and

later–they will not keep the benefits of these

experiences to themselves. These are the

people who will help build the kind of future

we Marines strive to create through our

    every action.

We recognize the challenges before us

and our own limitations; we also recognize

our abilities and our responsibility to use

them to the fullest. If we are ever to realize

the vision for this Association again, we must

find it in our minds and hearts to recruit new

    members, re-establish those who have

become delinquent in dues, strive for new

and active chapters, recharge the chapters

that are slumping, make fund raising a prime

activity, dig into our personal funds as deeply

as possible, and pull this Association back up

on its feet and off and running.

Let every one of us get behind the Blue

    Diamond Foundation, the Walmart/Sam’s

Club challenge, and general recruiting of

new members. Make your chapter relevant

to every member. Make the Association rele-

vant by attending reunions and anniversary

celebrations; bring units together for each of

these. Start a Unit Chapter in your locality.

Get involved and make this the viable organ-ization that it started out being.

We are all Marines. We all are or have

been members of the great 1st Marine

Division. Let us regroup and make a move to

bring the Association back up to its great-

    ness.

This is a letter that Mrs. Gordon Heim wroteto the Washington Post in response to its 12March 2010 review of the new HBO series,“The Pacific,” which premiered on 14March 2010. (Read the review at http://www.washingtonpost. com/wp-dyn/content/arti-cle/2010/03/11/ AR2010031104598_2.html?sid=ST2010031105120)

Reading the review will put Mrs. Heim’s

    letter in perspective.

Here is an excerpt from that review:

An undoubtedly impressive effort, “ThePacific” represents HBO’s full firepower, deploy-ing a tag team of writers and directors who’veworked on the network’s “John Adams” minis-eries as well as “The Wire,” “The Sopranos,”“Six Feet Under” and, most notably, 2001’s“Band of Brothers” — to which “The Pacific” isintended as a hemispheric complement. It’s lit-erally the other side of the story, and it is beingtold because it must be told. Obligation is “ThePacific’s” essential mission.

    The LetterDear Mr. Stuever,

We read your review of The Pacific,

which premieres on HBO 9 PM 14, March

2010, with great interest. My husband

[whom I met in my home country of

    Australia], CWO Gordon F. Heim,

USMC[r], served in Guadalcanal [not for the

    7 August D Day invasion-he arrived later],

    Cape Gloucester, Peleliu and Okinawa.

Sadly, he passed away in March 2003.

    While understanding some of your

assumptions about the men who served in the

First Marine Division, there are several

things you did not “get.” As everyone who

knew my husband was aware, there is a sim-

ple fact. From the day, he graduated from

Parris Island to the day he died, he was first,

last and always a Marine. What led him to do

whatever was asked of him by “the Corps”

he did with a willing heart and with great

    courage.

People often asked him how it was possi-

ble for him to go through one D-Day beach

invasion landing—and then go on to do two

more D-Day beach landings. He would say,

“I did it for the other Marines. We are a team.

I look after the man next to me, knowing he

    is there for me.”

A lifetime best friend who was with

Gordon on the ship into the final months of

the long campaign of Guadalcanal signed on

at age 15. Doc began his long storied career

as Corpsman Doc and retired as Rear

Admiral Kenneth C Haynes. He remains

“Doc“ to all remaining First Marines and

    their families.

After the horrific fighting on Peleliu, my

husband was granted a thirty-day leave to

Melbourne, Australia with a caveat. The

caveat was that he agreed to be a part of the

next campaign. He rejoined the First Marines

in January to prepare for the next engage-

ment. Fortunately for all of us, he survived

    Okinawa.

John F. Fitzgerald, Jr., cousin to President

John F Kennedy, conceived of an

Association to be called the First Marine

    Division Association. The Association had

its first reunion in New York City. Thus

began our lifetime close relationship with the

    FMDA.

My adult children grew up seeing many

of these Marines and their families at each

year’s annual Reunion. The Reunions and

the work of the Association, then and now,

were to allow these men who had shared the

incommunicable experience of war to rejoin

with their fellow life-long Marines, for once

    and always.

In time, Gordon became Treasurer and

later President of the First Marine Division

Association. He also ran six successful

reunions. I can assure you we all looked for-

ward to these occasions with great eagerness.

(Note: Mr. Henry Shaw , a Marine Corps his-

torian, did a survey of the men of the First

Division. The average age was18, with over

50 percent of them coming from farms and

    small towns.)

The last Reunion my husband ran was in

Washington DC, 7 August 1992, the fiftieth

anniversary of Guadalcanal. Thanks to the

intercession of the then Commandant of the

Marine Corp, General Carl Mundy, the occa-

sion became a national event. The anniver-

sary was held at the Iwo Jima Memorial in

    Arlington Cemetery.

For the Marines there was no other place

to hold this reunion. This group, along with

other WWII veterans, had chipped in and had

made contributions to what is now the WWII

Memorial in Washington DC for decades

    before it was actually built.

By 1992, the plans for the Memorial were

in place. Many of the details of the Memorial

were not known to the Marines who faithful-

ly contributed to have their own Memorial.

They paid financially for a large portion of

this, their own Memorial, in Washington DC.

Regardless how any of us feel about the

Memorial itself, the spirit and the unity of

this generation paid for it in more ways than

    one.

In 1992, President George H.W. Bush laid

the wreath. There were over 4,000 people

attending that hot August day. All seats were

provided by the Department of Defense.

All the Joint Chiefs were there. General

Colin Powell went among the FMDA mem-

bership, shaking their hands. The US Post

    Office issued commemorative stamps. There

were two color guards that day. The usual

one and an unexpected one, with each mem-

ber of the color guard dressed in World War

    II uniforms.

We have a film of the occasion. I still get

a lump in my throat at all that transpired. The

US Marine Band, the President‘s Own,

played. In attendance were two active duty

chaplains. One was Chaplain Gearing, who

was the actual chaplain on Guadalcanal. The

other was Father Denis O’Brien, who was an

eighteen-year-old grunt in his first campaign

to Peleliu. He spoke that day.

    Dr. Eugene Sledge, aka “Sledgehammer,”

came to Reunions. He was as fine as they

come, and we are grateful to him for his

book, With the First Marine Division on

    Peleliu and Okinawa.

As to “doing it for Dad,“ I disagree. Not

in my personal experiences, then or now.

The group of men in WWII in the Pacific

had fathers back home who bore a lifetime of

insomnia and other medical ailments that

began while they were staying up to listen to

the Marines in attendance remembered of

    him.

“He was a breath of fresh air,” said Fred

Frankville, a former corporal who served

under Mackin. “That’s what he was.”

Mackin made sure the first day he came

to Dog Company that he shook the hand of

every Marine under his command, said

Frankville. In a time where Marines didn’t

know many people outside of their fire

teams, this made a big impression.

Frankville was so impressed that he had no

issue later serving as Mackin’s driver,

something he said he was honored to do.

This level of contact continued long

after Mackin moved on from the Marine

Corps. In 1980, he got in touch with some

of the Marines he served with in Korea,

suggesting that they meet up at a veteran

reunion the following year. Nine Marines

from Dog Company attended the meeting,

and a tradition was started. Mackin

became one of the founding members of

the Dog Seven Association, an organiza-

tion dedicated to finding the rest of the

Marines who served in the unit.

This was the same leadership the

Marines remembered him for in Korea.

Mackin had a habit of personally going out

and checking the route of a patrol before

sending his Marines, said Charles Curley,

who served as a sergeant with Mackin.

“Some people are leaders but don’t

know how to lead,” said Curley “He knew

    how to lead.”

Mackin cared for everyone in the unit.

As Gonzalo Garza, a former platoon ser-

geant under Mackin explained, “We did

more for him because of his leadership.”

    Jacqueline Mackin-Hartman, the oldest

daughter of Mackin, said she was amazed

at the pride the Marines had in serving

with her father. It is a feeling that she

    shares.

“My pride in my father continues to

grow as the realization of his impact on

others was so strong,” said Mackin-

Hartman. “Like them, my father lived his

life like a Marine, and now I am beginning

to better understand what that means.”

Mackin led the way once more, as the

three Marines and the families in atten-

dance followed the procession to the grave

site. After the ceremony, the Marines

paused, savoring their last reunion with

Col. Al Mackin, who lays forever interned

at Arlington National Cemetery, and in

    their memories.

The current and new missions of theUSMC, humanitarian and peacekeepingmissions, in addition to the traditional com-

bat mission, can be summed up by the all-

encompassing dictum of the Marine Corps:

“Your best friend or your worst enemy.”

Humanitarian and peacekeeping - Your best

friend; Combat - Your worst enemy.

However, in this day and age of greater

    sensitivity to non-combatants, e.g., children,

women, the elderly, new tactics have been

developed. In Afghanistan, a tactic called

“Marine Combat Hunter“ has changed the

nature of “Combat In A Built Up Area,“ as it

has been called, in a village, town, or city.

Remember the way it was: 1. Hand

grenade through a window; 2. Kick in the

door; 3. Go in with weapons blazing. Now,

Marines are very aware that children,

women, and the elderly might just be cower-

ing and fearful in a corner behind that door.

So, in order to be “Your best friend” to the

civilian population, and to win their hearts

and minds, instead of going in and shooting

up a room, this new tactic has been devel-

    oped.

    Marine Combat Hunter means: 1.

Observe. 2. Profile. 3. Track. Because insur-

gents or Taliban often blend in with children,

women, and the elderly, Marines now first

Observe and then Profile to determine the

enemy. There can be a danger to Marines in

a split-second delay, but to be “Your best

friend” warrants this. Then again, this tactic

is an extension of “self sacrifice before self

    preservation,” right from MCRD Parris

    Island/San Diego.

In reflecting on this, its pros and cons, the

regard for the civilian population has a reli-

gious overtone, though unintended by the

Corps. In the New Testament Gospels, the

Lord always reached out with mercy to the

vulnerable, the fearful, the suffering, the

    down-and-out people. A beautiful example

of this is the Lord‘s teaching in the Gospel of

    Matthew, Chapter 25, Verses 31 - 46.

In these verses the Lord teaches mercy

and caring. In answer to a query, the Lord

teaches us, “Amen, I say to you, whatever

you did for one of these least brothers of

mine, you did for me.” II (Verse 40)

These words of the Lord from the Gospel

of Matthew ought give us much to think

about in the way we reach out with mercy

and caring to people around us. Our life is

surrounded by concentric circles of people.

We begin with the closest circle of our fami-

ly and then work out to our community and

beyond, even to those cowering and fearful

children, women, and the elderly behind that

door in places like Marja, Afghanistan.

For too many in our society, mercy and

    caring for another is an unknown quantity;

too many just let the opportunity pass us by.

Realize that a return of mercy and caring

and even gratitude is not always forthcoming

    from people. But, we

grow spiritually as human beings in the way

of the Lord when we reach out with mercy

    and caring to others.

Isn’t this imbedded in our Marine Corps

culture in our Missions, be they Combat,

    Humanitarian, or Peacekeeping?

“Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for

one of these least brothers of mine, you did

    for me.”
