Number Plate Surrounds

So nothing from Members yet, I am ever optimistic. Am over this summer, cannot remember when we have had so many over 40 degrees days. So, if like me you hate being out in the heat, keep cool indoors, and write me an article.

Pam (ever hopeful)

Bruce has a large number of these number plate surrounds, going very cheap. So get a pair off of him for your everyday car as well.

Sorry, no Presidents Report this month.

Australia Day 2019 It was a perfect day for a pool party, but no one was game to get in the pool,, Although I did after everyone had gone home. Fourteen people, including Pam and I enjoyed a leisurely lunch in convivial company. Only 3 Triumphs ventured out, Murrays’s, Dorothy’s Stag and Deane’s TR 3. My Stag and Standard stayed in the shed. Unfortunately as far as I know no one took any pictures? After lunch everyone took off to take part in other Australia Day functions. We need some one to organise some social events ? The guys down Rockingham are going to organise a fish and chip or a pie run shortly. Is there any interest in a breakfast buffet at International on the water for $15.50 per head for all you can eat ? Breakfasts in the past have been popular, not the free ones ? Barrie Nelson

An Enduring Love Affair Italy - Centre of Art, Elegant Performance Cars & the Fiat 500

by Murray Nixon Not surprisingly, Italy’s National Motor Museum is situated in Turin, the home of Fiat. Established in 1899, the company has had a long and complicated history. Giovanni Agnelli was one of the found-ers and the family have demonstrated wonderful survival skills over the years of a roller coaster ride. Fiat was at one time the largest manufacturer in Europe and third largest in the World after General Motors and Ford. Part of their International Empire included the USA before the First World War when Fiat were very much in the prestige market, sell-ing for $6,400 against a Ford T at $825. Regulations in the “Land of the Free” forced them to close the factory. However, the Italian base spent the war producing vehicles, railway engines and aircraft engines for the war effort. The company prospered and by 1920 produced 80%of Italy’s motor vehicles. In 1921, the Communist, Italian Socialist Party took over the factories under the Red Flag. In 1922 the modern Linotto mass pro-ducing assembly line factory was built and for political reasons was given back to the Mussolini supporting Agnelli family. It is always helps to have friends in high places! During World War 2, the company produced much for the Axis, including Tanks and Aircraft. The World turns and when Mussolini was ousted, the Agnelli’s went too, but in 1963, Gianni, grandson of the founder became General Manager and Chairman until 1996. In 1976, Libya acquired one third share by capital Injection and the agreement of building a factory in their country. Fiat built several factories in South America and marketed in the USA, only once again to have to leave when the use of Russian steel (swapped for the rights to manufacture in USSR) destroyed the company reputation because of rust. In 2014 they were back in USA owning 20% of Chrysler.

continuedOver the years, Fiat has acquired most of the Italian motor industry, owning Lancia, Maserati, Ferrari, Abarth and Alfa Romeo, as well as some of the largest International agricultural machinery manufac-turers. Fiat lead the World in producing “Green” internal combustion powered cars, with low CO2 emissions. There are few companies that have survived for over 120 years and none have had such a colourful history.Turin is best known to non-Italians as the site for the original “The Italian Job “and that magnificent Mini adventure. The Museum has 200 cars, including the first Italian car, the Bernardi of 1896 and the 1899 FIAT and includes many famous rac-ing Alfa Romeos and Ferrari. It is of the high standard we had come to expect, and is best described by photos. After a half days shopping and dinner, we visited the design studio and museum of Pininfarina, famous for the design of so many beautiful cars, it has the capacity to build complete cars and proto types or for display. The museum includes some concept cars that never reached production, plus some I have admired in photos but not previously seen in the flesh. This includes the Cisitalia, which was exhibited in America in the 1950s as an example of industrial art and was the car that set the fashion for modern Grand Tourisimo coupe’. Donald Healey was one of the giants of the British motor industry. He was employed by the Riley Brothers where he became a successful Rally driver before being head hunted by Triumph, where he became Technical Director. After the war, he set up his own company with son Geoffrey and his was one of the first British companies to produce a new car using the famous 2 ½ litre Riley engine, the West-land. This was the World’s fastest production car of the time, first timed in Italy at 104.56 MPH and a standing start 17.8 seconds for a kilo-metre. Later in Belgium running on pool petrol it was officially timed

continued 2at 110.65 MPH over the measured mile. Healey was one of the first to tackle the American sports car market and entered into a joint venture with Nash to produce a sports car, the Nash Healey, using basically the same chassis, the bodies were designed and built by Pininfarina. He and Geoffrey proved it by competing in the Mille Miglia. For the 1950 Le Mans, a car was driven by two drivers, Tony Rolt and Duncan Hamilton, who later became winners of the famous race for Jaguar. The car was holding third position before it was rear ended by a brakeless competitor and limped home to fourth place. Sydney Al-lard in a Cadillac powered car came in third. In 1951, Rolt and Hamilton drove a Healey saloon two seater to overall sixth place Having suffered an accident in the 1952 Mille Miglia, the Healeys decided to give up racing and employed Leslie Johnson and Tommy Wisdom for Le Mans who did even better and finished third behind two Mercedes Gull wings, beating the third Mercedes and were first British car home.. That was the year when the Jaguar C types over-heated and withdrew. That car had a Geoffrey Healey designed and built body because the original had been wiped off in the Mille Miglia. A standard car with a Pininfarina body was on display. The tour was rounded off by one of the leading designers pro-ducing a sketch of a GT while we looked on.Murray Nixon 31-1-2020

As some of the older members will remember we used to have a laminated sheet to put on your windscreen giving the details of your car. You have probably noticed that I still have mine for the Stag and Standard, and I display them at events that we go to. I was recently asked by a member if he could get one done. It looks better if we all have the same layout. Pam has the nec-essary template to do this, and I can laminate them. All you need to do is supply Pam with the information and she will do the rest. I will have blank sheets that you can get from me, don't worry about what it looks like, as Pam will redo it anyway. t would be impressive if all our cars had these information cards on their screens.Barrie Nelson

To All Delegates and/or Secretaries of Member Clubs of The Council of Motoring Clubs of WA (Inc) Clubs will be aware of the recent announcement of the Min-ister for Transport David Templeman regarding the availability of a concession on licence fees for modified “classic” vehicles. There is a lot of conjecture going on at the moment about what this means and we as well as staff within the Dept of Transport are awaiting more information. As soon as the announcement was made, liaison was started with the Dept of Transport and with the Minister’s office by the CMCWA for more details. In order to gain correct information the CMCWA has already arranged to meet with Minister Templeman to ensure that the benefits of Code 404 licencing under which our vehicles can obtain conces-sional licencing are retained and are not affected or altered due to the new system. It is our understanding that the current arrangements are not affected and that the announcement relates to a separate sys-tem which does not affect the Code 404 process at all. It will not help the cause of our classic car movement for Clubs or individuals to start making individual approaches to the Minister or to the Department as this will only confuse the issue. It is in the best interests of all of us, if you could advise your members to let us meet with the Minister and his advisers with a consolidated voice rather making diverse approaches on behalf of a particular indi-vidual or organisation. The moment we receive informed information we will advise Clubs. It is important to the continued good relationship that the CMC has with government regarding Code 404 licencing that the above is allowed to process and that it is not jeopardised by off the cuff remarks or uninformed comment by classic motoring enthusiasts through social media or elsewhere on the matter.

Are you ready for Drive Your Triumph Day, Monday, Febru-ary 10th, to celebrate Sir John Black's birthday, the man who organ-ized Standard's purchase of Triumph after the war and went on to make the cars we enjoy driving today? It's just one month away. This celebratory drive has been building momentum every year. Last year I received close to 350 photos from all over the world. This year is going to be a bit more of a challenge as February 10th falls on Monday. As tempting as it may be to plan a drive for the weekend, we’re going to keep true to the day, and please submit photos only taken on Monday, February 10th, 2020. The concept is straightforward. On February 10th, go for a drive in your Triumph. Take a scenic drive on a country road or out to lunch, to the market, to work, where ever. Go for a drive alone or in a big group with your local Triumph Club. Take your spouse, buddy, child, grandchild or your dog; then take a photo. The photo is mainly of the car, and the owner if possible, ideally in front a cool spot, landmark, scenic view, in front of the hardware store or in your driveway. If it’s the middle of the winter where you live and your car is in hibernation, or in the middle of a restoration, take a photo of it anyway in the garage. Some winter photos I’ve received have the garage door open with the car tucked under a cover, and snow outside. Have fun with it, and participate. Next step is to email a high-resolution photo to [email protected], along with some basic information: owner’s name, year and model of car, and place photo was taken (city, state, country). The photos will then be published not only in our club newsletter, but also in USA’s national magazine: Vintage Triumph Registry, and on the Drive Your Triumph Day website: https://driveyourtriumphday.shutterfly.com Please feel free to send this on to other Triumph Clubs and Standard Clubs you may know of, and your club Activities Chair-man and Newsletter editor. Last year a few Standard Clubs joined in too, which is all good. Be sure to contact me with any questions you may have, and thank you in advance for getting the message out to your members and friends to Drive Their Triumphs on February 10th.Regards,Rye Livingston Activities Chairman Triumph Travelers Sports Car Club t1960 Triumph TR3A Mobile: 530-FIND-RYE
