Sustainability…“ We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.” –Thomas Fuller, Gnomologia, 1732
Here in beautiful Southern California it is easy to forget that we live in
a manufactured oasis in the middle of a desert. For us, the issue of water has been of utmost importance historically. In light of the possibly devastating drought, it is time to reexamine what this means for those of
us in the landscaping industry.
No matter what your stand on global warming, or which side of the political fence you stand, anybody who has driven by any lake lately can clearly see we are in a severe drought. As you know, I visited New Zealand last month. One thing I brought back was how critical water is to us. The results of climate change are clearly seen in the southern parts of New Zealand where there are glaciers. Over the past six years, Franz Josef glacier has been rapidly decreasing in size to a degree that would usually take hundreds of years. The lack of plant growth creates a distinct line in the surrounding mountains making it starkly clear that a precious resource is disappearing at a frightening rate. Their lowest average rainfall is twice what our lowest is. This makes me wonder, if they are losing a major source of water at such an astonishing rate, does California even stand a chance?
How are we going to be able to sustain landscape, as we know it, when we are losing our most important resource? The only answer I can come up with is that we can’t, unless we change the way we
look at non-native outdoor environments. We are forced to adapt to a new way of dealing with the environment.
While visiting New Zealand I had the opportunity to enjoy the different climates and begin to understand the relationship between the climate and all the beautiful life surrounding me. Seeing this made me reflect on the nature of the Landscaping business in California in relation to the climate. Unless you have been hiding under a bush for the last twenty years, you should be very familiar
with the idea of sustainability. Out of all the definitions for sustainable I found, I think the following one best encompasses the idea behind sustainability: involving methods that do not completely use up or destroy natural resources.
Think about that for a second. The idea that we could possibly, in our lifetime, see the total deso-
lation of a natural resource. It seems completely nuts, right? Well folks, it probably isn’t going to happen if we are smart, but what is happening is the rise in the cost of water! The upward trend of water cost will continue to rise until one day it is more valuable than gold! Now that is a crazy thought. So you might ask yourself where this fits into our business. The methods are where we as landscaping professionals come in.
Think of the different profit centers that your company can enjoy by promoting sustainable landscape methods. From re-designing landscapes with native plant material to introducing your clients to smart watering systems. Get educated by becoming a Certified Water Manager. Reach out to your local water districts to find out about rebate programs. Most of all attend local events where you can talk to people in our industry about how they are tackling this issue.
Speaking of local events, a great place to start is March 5, 2014 at the All Around Landscape Expo and BBQ at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara. Come learn about new water wise irrigation products and maybe pick up some tips that will help your business push through what is sure to be a stressful summer. Your Channel Islands Board is busily working on an event of our very own where water wise information will be the star attraction. Let’s forget for a second that we are competitors and work together to make a difference…starting right in our own back yard.
See you all next month! – Sarah

SoCal Water$mart FAQs: Help Grow Your Business, Save Your Customers Money and Conserve Water
Considering our driest calendar year on record was just followed by a drought decla-
ration for California – it’s clear that everyone in the landscaping community needs to do their part and help customers use water wisely. As you know, investing in efficiency is even smarter in these dry conditions, as more water is needed to maintain landscapes.
The regional SoCal Water$mart (SCW$) program can help contractors save water while also growing your business. As SCW$ has recently expanded its water use efficiency incentives through the new Public Agency Landscaping (PAL) program, we’ve compiled some responses to questions commonly asked by landscape professionals. We encourage you to contact program representatives (listed below) with any additional questions so that you can benefit from the great financial incentives available to landscape contractors through the SCW$ program.
Q: What area in SoCal does this rebate program cover?
A: SoCal Water$mart is a regional rebate program for residential, commercial, industrial and institutional sites within the service areas of the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) and the Family of Southern California Water Agencies. These areas
cover most of the SoCal region: Orange, San Diego, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura Counties.
Q: Which landscaping products are eligible for rebates?
A: Smart controllers, soil moisture sensors and high efficiency nozzles are some of the most popular products available for incentives. The Qualifying Products Lists for each measure are updated regularly and are available at socalwatersmart.com.
Q: How does someone apply for rebates?
A: The application process for both residential and commercial customers is online at www.socalwatersmart.com. Rebates for commercial accounts require a reservation made online, whereas rebates for residential accounts do not.
Q: Who receives the rebate payment – the customer or contractor? And how long does it take?
A: Either! There’s an option. Your customer (the customer on the water bill) can get the rebate, or you can enroll in the Contractor Direct Rebate Option (CDRO) to receive the payment directly. Once an application and all required docu-mentation is received – it takes 6-8 weeks to receive payment.

The Channel Islands Clipper February 2014 5
Q: Why would a contractor want to get the rebate – wouldn’t that require me to wait for the payment?
A: The contractor direct option can be a boon to a contractor’s sales process, since customers will be glad to receive the benefit of the rebates upfront and eliminate the wait. You can let them know that contractors have to be approved to receive rebates directly, so your acceptance into the program is an added credential. In some instances, you may still want the customer to receive the rebate, and with other clients you’ll want to receive it directly. A bonus of the program is that you get to decide.
Q: What’s required as documentation for me to get the rebate through the CDRO?
A: Once you are approved to receive rebates directly, you apply for rebates through the usual online process, and will need to submit the following:
1. Contractor’s Invoice to the Customer (supply invoice not required)
2. Customer Release Form (where the customer acknowledges that they understand that the contractor will receive the rebate)
3. Copy of customer’s water bill
Q: And how do I get approved to receive the rebates directly?
A: It’s simple to enroll and all forms are online under the “Contractor Direct Rebate Option” link. Approval typically takes just one day. Along with the application, you must submit a copy of your contractor license, proof of insurance and a
W-9. Make sure your company meets the requirements and download an application at www.socalwatersmart.com.
Q: Are there special incentives for my clients that are public agencies?
A: In late January, MWD launched a short term program to tap the high water savings potential of large public agency land-scapes such as city, county or federal parks, schools, etc. This program will offer public agencies up-front and enhanced incentives for installing water-efficient landscape irrigation devices (smart controllers, for example will receive rebates of $40 per station and high efficiency nozzles will receive $6 per nozzle). This new program could be a great selling point for your potential or current public agency clients. Note: these rebates are not eligible for the Contractor Direct Rebate Option.
Q: What about rebates for turf removal?
A: SoCal Water$mart also recently launched a new regional turf removal program in late January, where the rebate is $1 per square foot of removed turf. Note: some of MWD’s member water agencies already offer their own turf removal incentive programs, so customers should check which turf removal incentive is offered for their specific location.
Q: If my client is a Home Owner’s Association, condo, town home complex, etc. – are rebates available for devices that I plan to purchase for the common areas?
A: Yes. Common areas are considered “commercial.” So you must make a reservation for these rebate applications.

Supplier Showcase
To ZD or Not to ZD By Robert Romo, Ewing Irrigation
• FX Luminaire’s ZD product line increases customizable landscape lighting options.
Integrating lighting fixtures into landscapes can lead to huge profits. It’s also exciting to install and customize systems, since
no lighting project is ever really the same. You can customize a landscape in numerous ways. Daytime and nighttime focal points are showcased, walkways and drives are enhanced, and you can bring warmth and life to an otherwise boring and ordinary land-scapes. But how can the installation process get any better? LED technology offers several options.
The world of lighting changed dramatically when LEDs were introduced, especially in the landscape industry. Professionals no longer have to worry as much about having to balance the number of fixtures on one run. You can now just lay down the wire and install the fixtures “daisy chain” style, reducing the amount of wire purchased. You can also install many more fixtures on one single run due to the decreased wattage draw of LEDs, which saves unnecessary expenses on larger or multiple transformers. But wait, there’s more!
Transforming the Lighting BusinessIn 2012, FX Luminaire’s line of lights rolled out a revolutionary product that was never before seen. They came out with a line of LED lighting fixtures, with ZD (zoning and dimming) technology
and the Luxor ZD controller. Each individual fixture can now have its own address and percentage setting from 0 to 100 on the light output brightness scale. They can be zoned, or grouped, together to create different themes in the landscape.
So you can now create a romantic setting around the hot tub or create a party theme to light up the activities area of a property. You can lower the brightness and increase the intensity of any area you feel needs to be flooded with light. FX Luminaire’s LED line also comes prepacked with four different color filters to create different moods that can be customized throughout the landscape. The options are endless.
The thought of changing out an area of your landscape to be illu-minated is no longer limited to one fixed style. Different days call for different moods, and everyone can appreciate a little flexibility, especially if you spent thousands of dollars creating your own perfect backyard utopia. There is much more to come from FX Luminaire, and I choose them as a partner in my own landscape. How about you?
Robert Romo is the manager of Ewing’s West Los Angeles branch, located at 2327 Federal Ave., and can be reached at 310.479.9533 or [email protected]. Robert is a board member for the CLCA Pacific Coast Chapter.

SoCal Water$mart FAQs, Continued from Page 5
Q: What about new construction? Can a homebuilder or developer get a rebate for installing controllers and/or nozzles at new sites?
A: Yes. New construction is acceptable as long as there is an active water account. (Note: in this case all devices are acceptable for rebate except for toilets in multi-family buildings.)
Q: Are funds held once I receive a reservation number? The website says that reservations are subject to availability of funds.
A: For residential applications, funds are available on a first-come first-served basis until funds are exhausted. The same is true for commercial rebates; however the reservation system was implemented to ensure that funds are set aside for your rebate. Provided all program terms and conditions are met - the system will confirm a reservation number and provide you with noti-fication. This reservation number confirms that funds will be set aside for your rebate.
Q: One of the terms and conditions says that if you have already received a rebate in the past for a qualifying device, you may not apply again for the same product category at that address. Yet how do I know whether there have been previous program installations at a customer’s property?
A: If you cannot find a record of a previous rebate or incentive or are unable to determine if there has already been an existing high-efficiency device installed, you may contact the Customer Support line at 1-888-376-3314 for assistance.
Q: Since some water agencies offer additional funds on top of MWD’s base rebate amounts – how can I make sure to get the full rebate amount?
A: When you apply for the rebate online and insert the installation address, it will tell you what full total incentives are available for that location and will automatically add those into your online application. For example, LA Department of Water and Power (LADWP) currently offers a rebate of $200 for a controller for single family residential sites. (This incentive includes MWD’s base amount of $80, totaling in a $200 rebate).
