Are You Better Off This Year?
Another year has just flown by. Are you and is your company better off
than last year? It is time to start thinking about planning and goals setting. Goals are future states that you would like to obtain. A plan is the blueprint agreed upon to help achieve goals. The goals should be specific to help keep an eye on the prize throughout the year. The route
to get there will vary and change along the way. Most plans will fail in one way or another. The bigger the failure the better the lesson for yourself and your organization. As much as I would like to promote what my organization or I do well, failure is what gives us perspective on success.
Failure is the most important driving force in business. It is an absolute teacher. It presents a lesson to everyone it meets. People always talk about success, but it is the ability to resist failure that helps accomplish your goals. “Winners are not afraid of losing. But losers are. Failure is part of the process of success. People who avoid failure also avoid success.” – Robert T. Kiyosaki
I would encourage everyone to take some time to reflect on your failures and decide that you want to be a successful person. Successful people learn from the past to make sure they don’t repeat their mistakes. Share success with your team and to help them jump over failure and run toward success. – Luis
Past SFV President Harold Jones Passes Away• Jones Also Served as State President
Long-time CLCA pioneer Harold Jones passed away
Nov. 14. A Memorial Service/Celebration of Life for him was held December 17 and was attended by several of his CLCA friends.
Harold was 97 at the time of his passing. He was SFV’s Chapter President in 1964 and CLCA State President in 1974. He was also an Army veteran serving in Greenland in WW II. Harold launched Harold Jones Landscapes in the 1960s. The company became a third generation, family owned business and is still running strong 65 years later.
In 2005 Harold and his wife Betty moved to Simi Valley to be closer to their family, where he spent his later years. Cards and notes can be sent to Betty Jones c/o Sage Mountain Assisted Living, 3499 Grande Vista Drive, Thousand Oaks, CA, 91320.

CLCA Trophy Awards: I Was There…Where Were You?
The following is from a 2009 article that appeared in local Chapter newsletters. The article was written by Mr. CLCA, Gary Vallen, who has since passed away and left us much too soon. We paid our respects to Gary at his memorial sign on Highway 395, the day after this year’s State Trophy Awards were held at the November Convention in Lake Tahoe. He may be gone, but his dedication to CLCA continues to be an example of what it means to be an INVOLVED member of this organization. – JRH
Being involved in CLCA for many years, I always look forward to the Convention
and most of all the Trophy Awards. I’ve been fortunate to be a State Judge twice, as I know a little about the program. This year I was told the projects were great, and as the show began in the large ballroom of the “M” Hotel in Las Vegas, that was evident.
Nelson Colvin, this year’s MC, asked me before the show to help him on stage keeping the trophies in order and passing them out to the Sponsors. Of course, I agreed. Once the awards presentation got underway, I was also asked to stand in and have my picture taken with some of the winners, standing in for Trophy Sponsors and award winners who were not present. But as the show went on, I found myself in more and more pictures, to the point that I began to feel uncomfortable.
I’m not an egotist, by any means, and for the most part I shy away from pictures. But after agreeing to help by standing in for missing Sponsors – or worse, winners – I needed to express my profound disappointment in the lack of turnout of both Sponsor representatives and award winners.
What’s happening to our chapter and State Awards Programs? This is a program that put my company on the map with lots of PR and contacts from clients and architects looking for a company that takes pride in their work. Suppliers,
why wouldn’t you want to send a representative to the Awards Program to present the award for which you paid good money?
Suppliers, the promotional aspect of the awards going out to local chapter newsletters and other industry publications gives a boost to the advertising your company deserves without any additional cost. Contractors, if you enter the program and are a winner, you are notified that “you should show up at the awards,” without giving any details. That’s the time to invite your clients, your friends, your workers and your family members to our Trophy Awards Programs. It’s not the time to stay home, losing the best advertising and public relations money can buy, and that was paid for with your entry fee.
Let’s get the program back and running, with all the notoriety and attendance it deserves. If you sponsor an award, show up and give it out. Don’t have me or someone else stand in for your company to hand out the award you paid for. And if you enter an award in the program, show up to receive your award. You’ll gain more than you can imagine from this, especially if you use the award to promote your company. So, do not miss the next Convention and Trophy Awards Program – or your chapter’s
Beautification Awards program. And don’t look for me to be standing in for you next year. Like I said, I’m camera shy. – Gary Vallen

Thankfulness, Liberty and Bright Minds This timeless article is a treasure from Dave’s past November contributions
I know each month is always special to me, but November holds that spot in my heart – one that all of us can step back to
acknowledge – being thankful for the wonder of our journey. Our forefathers and mothers recognized the intrinsic value of being thankful to our Creator for the bounty we have. This is our oppor-tunity to do the same.
There is a unique power in thankfulness that returns to us in kind. For some time now, I have been awakened to an inner understanding and acceptance that this creative power is the power of life itself, manifested through us with possibil-ities expanding beyond measure. Thankfulness is natural power.
Taking moments to be with family and friends is a feel-good time generating an inner warm that settles right here in the heart. Yes, Love Does. And even when there are momentary bumps in the road, you are directed to move over in your direction and refocus your vision.
I recently had a discussion with a group of college students. I must say that I was touched and amazed at the commitment shown by these young and bright minds. It demonstrated to me that the future remains promising. The students stated in order – family, honor, integrity, God and country – as critical elements in the creation of liberty. Of course, this created more discussion, albeit without heat, but with cognizant thinking.
A young lady with terrific eyes added, “We are one nation under God,” (with emphasis on one), and that had given birth to our freedoms and liberties. (I think Lincoln said something like this… I wish I could recall a lot more.) More discussion followed.
A strong foundation in everyone’s life begins with principles developed at a young age through family, teachers, and even friends. This young group made an agreement to be vigilant and to continue to pursue what our forefathers had set forth for us as the foundation to build upon. Really, it made
this dinosaur with tears in my eyes very proud and honored to sit in on a discussion of current thoughts and ideas. I saw that the “beacon light” was still there on their individual journeys. Asked what I thought, I said that I was humbled. Amen to that.
As Emerson once said, “When you are in the presence of greatness, you too are great.” – Dave

A Beginner’s Guide to the Sustainable Groundwater Act By Richard Restuccia, Jain Irrigation
A few years and droughts ago (2014 to be exact), Governor Brown signed the Sustainable Groundwater Management
Act of 2014 (SGMA) that affects water in California and food across the country. SGMA establishes a long-term plan to manage groundwater in California. It also creates Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSAs) to develop, prepare, and implement a Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP) in their areas. Local stakeholders in critically overdrafted areas have until 2020 to complete their plans and begin their implementation. Critically overdrafted areas include a good portion of the Central Valley of California. The Central Valley is California’s single most produc-tive agricultural regions in the State and supplies more than half the fruits, vegetables and nuts grown in the United States.
Why is this Important for Everyone?By the year 2050, the world population will exceed 9 billion people. We are going to have to increase worldwide food produc-tion dramatically to keep up with the growth. In the U.S. alone, we expect to see an increase of 117 million people. This is a real challenge; California farming is going to have to grow more food with less water. It’s estimated by the Environmental Defense Fund between 15% – 20% of irrigated land will be taken out of produc-tion. This means growing more food with less water and, it also means higher food prices for everyone.
Growers especially are concerned about SGMA because they have lots to lose. SGMA can be the catalyst for California to gain control of its water.
