This year, the American Heart Association presents "Go Red for Women," a movement providing information to women about cardiovascular disease.
Traditionally, we think about men being the primary victims of heart disease, but each year, it claims the lives of hundreds of thousands of women.
The older you are, the more likely it is that you will get heart disease. But healthy living at any age is the foundation for disease-free later years.
In your 20s, health isn't on your mind, and you believe there will be plenty of time later to think about it. Wrong. Heart disease can develop at any age, so it's crucial that you make health conscious-decisions that will benefit you now and in the long run. Don't smoke, drink in moderation, and choose birth control methods carefully.
In your 30s, life is a balancing act between family, work and yourself. But you’re not a kid anymore. Now is the time to build heart-healthy habits. If you avoid the conditions that put you at risk for heart disease until you turn 50, you may never develop heart disease. Check your family history, quit smoking, and avoid gaining weight.
In your 40s, it becomes even more important to make healthy choices. No matter what life brings, it's important to stay happy and healthy so you can enjoy the years to come. Make healthy lifestyle choices now that will benefit you in the long run. Eat well, exercise, watch your weight, and get a checkup.
In your 50s, your body is changing and that affects your heart. Check with your doctor too see if your numbers are acceptable for cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, fasting glucose, and body mass index. To get your estimated heart risk, go to goredforwomen.org.
In your 60s, heart disease is more likely, but you have the power to prevent it. Smoking is the most preventable cause of death in the United States. It's never too late to quit. Keep an eye on body weight, continue to exercise, and have your blood pressure checked.
February is American Heart Month In 2011, Heart Month focuses on women and heart disease

We are pleased to assist Boehringer-Ingelheim in their campaign to create awareness to your patient base via their Drive4COPD Campaign. You should have received a kit (via UPS) that contains some consumer information on COPD, and a questionnaire that your patients can complete. Both your patients and your pharmacy are eligible to win a variety of prizes. Make sure you fill in the code ‘P H’ on the screener’s tear off section to qualify your pharmacy. All paperwork needs to be returned to B-I (via the provided envelope) by January 28, 2011.

ALEXANDRIA, Va - In a clear victory for retail pharmacy, NACDS and NCPA have agreed with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on a motion to dismiss the Medicaid average manufacturer price (AMP) lawsuit. The landmark agreement came after CMS withdrew the last remaining provisions of the AMP rule that had been blocked by a preliminary injunction following litigation by NACDS and NCPA. By agreeing to end the lawsuit, the chain and independent retail pharmacy industries have resolved a long-running and bitter dispute with the federal government over the way pharmacies will be reimbursed for dispensing generic drugs to low-income Americans covered by Medicaid. A dismissal of the lawsuit by a U.S. district court would end a simmering, three-year legal battle — and a three-year court injunction that has blocked CMS from implementing the new AMP guidelines, saving pharmacies billions of dollars, according to pharmacy groups. Doctors aren't doing enough to educate patients about disease management, leaving patients to fend for themselves, according to a MedTera study conducted in September. Of the 7,028 survey respondents, 95% indicated that they are looking for more comprehensive information about disease management, and 77% said they hadn't received any written information about their illness or medications directly from the physician, according to the survey. High percentiles of the patients surveyed said specific types of information are “very much” or “extremely” valuable, including: • Details on the importance of follow-ups and tests (94%)
• Dietary recommendations based on condition (86%)
• Online resources to help manage a condition (84%)
• Changes in lifestyle that might be required (82%)
• Information on medications and potential side effects (78%)

An estimated 36 million Americans, or one in six people, have purchased prescription drugs online without a doctor's prescription, according to research presented by The Part-nership at Drugfree.org and funded by the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies (ASOP). The Partnership at Drugfree.org revealed the findings of its drug purchasing habits phone survey of more than 1,000 adults at the White House Intellectual Property Health and Safety Forum in Washington, DC. Forty years ago, other than the occasional visit with the State Board of Pharmacy inspec-tor, there was very little outside influence in the practice of pharmacy. Patients paid cash for their scripts, product was purchased from their local wholesaler – seemed like a comfortable relationship for all. But today, all of that has changed. The number of outside agencies attempting to im-pact the practice of pharmacy is limitless. So, this terrain has required independent business-men to develop strategic professional alliances that can best represent pharmacies within this myriad of challenges and intrusion. Thus local, state and national pharmacy organizations have evolved to be where you can’t be! Over the past few months, we have seen NCPA successfully battle to eliminate the AMP implementation and eliminate other Federal mandates to your practice. We should all sa-lute their efforts because everything they do is on YOUR behalf! If you’re not a member of NCPA today, start the New Year off the right way, and join.

What is it? If you choose to be on the program WE will NOTIFY you if we have not received an order With at least 5 lines of RX product … as of order cutoff time
What’s the benefit to you? It serves as a “double check” in case that day’s primary order was not received by SDC, for whatever reason... (and reduces the likelihood of a “bad surprise”when the truck arrives the next day).
What happens? 1. At or near order cutoff time, we will run a list of any customer that are on the program) forwhich we have not received an order containing at least 5 lines of RX products.
2. We will try to contact the customer at their emergency email address or phone number a. By Email if the contact person has a smart phone b. To the primary emergency (after hours) phone number
3. If there is an order on the store PC that needs to be resent… a. The customer may choose to personally resend b. The customer may grant permission for SDC to enter the store system by eboulevard and remotely re-send any order that is still open and available 1. For 3b to be an option, eboulevard must be installed, and the PC mustbe left on. 2. Since 3b releases all open and available orders, it may not be a good option if the store makes a practice of generating orders several days in advance of submitting them.
What does SDC need from you if you choose to be on the Order Assurance Program? a. Emergency Email if the contact person has a smart phone b. Emergency (after hours) phone number and contact name c. Eboulevard must be installed for that option to work
Note: We can’t guarantee that we will catch every instance of an intended order that wasn’t received, or that we will always be able to reach you, but based on testing at our Arkansas DC, we are able to catch most… and our customers there have told us how much they appreciate this service. To us, it’s just one way of saying “We Care”.
We will be calling you in the next few days to answer any questions you may have about thisprogram, and to determine your interest… OR feel free to call SDC customer service when it’sconvenient for you.

Low-tech tests heLp doctors diagnose compLex diseases, predict risks Sometimes common objects can be used by doctors to give preliminary information about a variety of conditions. They cost almost nothing, while CT scans and MRIs are expensive.
* The tape measure: A waist size over 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women indicates a higher risk for diabetes. It is also helpful as a test for sleep apnea, cholesterol, and blood pressure to quickly screen a patient's risks.
* The bathroom scale: A weight gain of just few pounds is a signal that heart-failure patients are retaining fluid and at risk for hospital admission. Doctors and nurses ask heart-failure patients to weigh themselves every day.
* The paper clip: A bent paper clip can be used instead of calipers to assess nerve impairment in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. A patient should be able to feel both ends of the paper clip when they are pressed into a finger. It is less expensive than using calipers for the two-point discrimination test.
* A handshake: At no cost, a firm handshake can help assure that a patient is healthy enough to make it through heart surgery. A weak grip can warn of possible complications. Surgeons also judge frailty by how easy it is for a patient to get out of a chair or get up on a table for an exam.
* A stop watch: Testing how long it takes an elderly heart-surgery candidate to walk 15 feet helps predict surgical risk. The gait speed test is a validated measure of frailty in elderly people and a predictor of physical and cognitive health. It should take no longer than six seconds to cross the finish line.
Increasing potassium intake could reduce the number of people diagnosed with high blood pressure by more than 10 percent, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension.
Researchers found that where high levels of potassium-heavy fruits and vegetables are consumed, high blood pressure affects only 1 percent of the population. At the same time, these people reduced their incidence of heart disease and stroke.
In societies where people eat large quantities of processed foods and fewer fruits and vegetables, hypertension affects 33 percent of the population.
Good sources of potassium include bananas, apricots, cantaloupe, grapefruit, peas, beans and potatoes.

Planned road signs to move away from all capital letters
CAN YOU QUICKLY READ THIS? Or, is this easier to read?
The federal government is requiring cities across the country to change street-name signs from all capital letters to capital and lowercase letters. The government says they are easier to read.
Cities, states and localities will also be required to make new traffic warning signs that better reflect light from a vehicle's headlights. They will be easier to see at night, especially by older drivers.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) gives cities and towns until 2015 to make the changes. New signs will improve visibility of roadside signs like stop, yield and railroad crossings.
If cities don't comply, they will be in danger of losing federal funds. If states don't comply, they could be liable in lawsuits, especially those filed in crashes attributed to non-compliant signs, the FHWA says.
Their research shows that older drivers especially are better able to read signs when they are written in both capital and small letters. FHWA director Victor Mendez says as drivers get older, they want to make sure they can easily read the signs.
The changes were proposed in 2007 and included in last year's periodic update to the federal code governing public streets and roads.
Cities and states are not pleased with the changes. They have already cut their budgets, most have no extra funds for the change. The government might extend the deadline.

As more doctors computerize patient records, it's easy for their staffs to determine who should be coming in for a checkup or who has missed a prescribed test.
It used to be telemarketers and fund-raisers who put out a robocall to contact you. Today, it's likely to be a message from the doctor's office. Or it could be from the drugstore to say it's time to refill your prescription. Dentists are also placing calls to remind patients it's time for a checkup.
Some are using their computers to tweet you a reminder, and others are sending text messages on their patients' cell phones.
The contact barrage has two goals. It gets patients to pay attention to their conditions before they get more serious. A patients' well-being is a doctor's concern.
The reminder calls also help doctors fill gaps in their schedules. Today, some people are cutting costs by skipping routine appointments, which is not a good idea. For most doctors, appointments have declined since last year.
The number of appointments jumps during the flu and cold season, making doctors' offices more crowded. But some of these patients might not be there if they had taken their doctor's advice for follow-up visits and tests or for seeing a specialist.
Healthcare reform and Uncle Sam may be responsible for part of the calling programs. In 2011, Medicare begins pilot programs recommended for preventive care called the Medical Home Program. It involves computerizing records and using support staff to monitor whether patients are filling prescriptions and keeping appointments. Those who are forgetful or "too busy to go to the doctor" are targeted. It's a way to get disengaged patients to take care of themselves.
