Diego Valderas, the coordinator of Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) in Andalucia, said on Monday his coalition will take its time in deciding who to support saying “Nothing is written in stone, except that the IU and PP are like water and oil,” But he then went on to say: “And the problem with the other side [referring to the Socialists] is that they are one part water, and another part oil.” He added that both major parties were “the real losers” in Sunday's election. “They can sell the situation any way they want, but anyone who loses nine seats has been defeated because of their policies — even though they did all they could to keep from losing,” he said about the Socialists, adding: “And the other loser [talking about PP leader Javier Arenas] was already claiming the Andalucia government house as his own even before the people had spoken.” All three parties have said they will negotiate, though most observers feel the only logical outcome is a Socialist-IU coalition government. PP wins but falls shortof a majority Both major parties havebegun to court IU membersto side with them and forma new government. TheSocialists and the PP need55 seats in the 109-memberparliament for an absolutemajority.

Javier Arenas, the PP leaderwho won the elections bypopular vote, only obtained50 seats while theincumbent Socialistgovernment of José AntonioGriñán won 47.

The Socialists weresurprised by the results, having expected the

thrashing that all theopinion polls predicted andthe PP was devastated whenthe expected “resoundingvictory” did not materialiseand power slipped out oftheir hands. Prime MinisterMariano Rajoy said onarriving in Seoul on Sundaynight to attend a summit onnuclear security, that hedidn’t see it as an electionloss.

“Our party has obtainedthe best result ever inAndalucian elections,” hetold reporters. “We won thatelection – elections that wehave never before won.” Headded that predictions“weren't always 100 per centright”.

PP general secretary MaríaDolores de Cospedalstressed the fact that PPcandidate Javier Arenas hadobtained the party's firstregional victory inAndalucia. She shruggedoff comments that thegovernment's austeritymeasures may have swayedthe vote. “The changes that

are coming to Spain areunstoppable. There is agovernment in charge thatis carrying out the reformsthat Spain needs and hasthe support of the majorityof citizens. One thing is thegeneral elections; quiteanother is the regional race,”she said.

It was Arenas’ fourth andprobably final attempt towin Andalucia’s regionalrace – he came so close, butnot close enough.

At press time, thecomposition of the region'sfuture government was stillunclear, although thepundits are predicting aSocialist-IU coalitiongovernment.

Mariano Rajoy and BarackObama finally got to knoweach other personally atthe Nuclear SecuritySummit which started onSunday in Seoul.

The upshot of theirmeeting was an invitationfor Rajoy to the Oval Office, probably in Septemberafter he attends the UnitedNations General Assemblyin New York.

According to Spanishgovernment sources,Obama jokingly apologisedfor not being able to speak

Spanish, although he saidhis daughters werestudying it and hadpromised to teach him.

Rajoy replied: “Mychildren study English, andI do too.” After his meetingwith President Obama,Rajoy was the first speakerat the summit's secondsession, when he wasgreeted by a round ofapplause.

Apparently SouthKorean president LeeMyung-bak had remindedthe assembled dignitaries

that Monday was Rajoy’s57th birthday, and calledon them to applaud.

Rajoy joked: “Getting ayear older is never good, but not getting a year olderis much worse.” During hisfive-minute speech, Rajoy

said that Spain has “a longand bitter experience in thefight against terrorism,”and called on all thecountries present to

“dedicate resources andefforts” to avoid nuclearmaterial from falling intothe hands of terroristgroups.

Iberia's pilots announcedon Tuesday that they planto go on strike on Mondayand Friday every weekfrom April to July. Theirbone of contentioncontinues to be thecreation of Iberia’s low-cost airline, IberiaExpress, which got off theground last Sunday.

The pilots and cabincrew held 12 one-daystrikes in December,January and Februarytrying to prevent the airlinefrom taking off. They arenow demanding first shotat the vacancies theexpansion of the airline willcreate for pilots and cabincrew.

The Catholic Church’s Caritas has prevented more than 100evictions since last September, when it set up its HousingMediation Service (SMV) for families unable to pay theirmortgages. More than 300 families – most of them headedby women – have asked for help and 200 cases are still beingprocessed. An SMV spokesman said that in the cases solved, the families exchanged mortgage payments for a lower rentalor were found new homes after they gave up their own tocancel the mortgage.

There was a marked rise inthe number of executionscarried out worldwide in2011, mainly centred in theMiddle East, AmnestyInternational has said in itsannual report.

The group said Iraq, Iranand Saudi Arabia were

Overall however, fewercountries now practise thedeath penalty. The groupsaid the number ofcountries using capitalpunishment has fallen by athird, compared to adecade ago. The group alsocondemned as "shameful"the US's use of the death

Memo fromMadridMartin DelfínWrites for the English language version of

The LocalVoice

Muriel Pilkington

The Partido Popular won the mostvotes and most seats (50) inSunday’s regional election, but fell

five seats short of a majority. TheSocialist Party won 47 seats – nine lessthan last time around – and IzquierdaUnida (IU, United Left) won 12 – sixmore than in 2008. While the PP madehistory on Sunday – the party had neverwon in Andalucia – Javier Arenas cannotform a government unless the IUsupports him. And that’s as likely as asnowflake’s chance of surviving in hell.

IU leader Diego Valderas has alreadysaid the PP and the IU are like oil andwater, and pointed out that

“Andalucia is not Extremadura”. In lastyear’s election in that region, the PP wonbut without a majority. IU decided, most uncharacteristically, not to voteagainst the PP when the regionalparliament met to decide who wasgoing to form the government. TheSocialists had been governingExtremadura for nearly 30 years, moreoften than not in alliance with the IUwhen they fell short of a majority. Butthey had made the big mistake of neverthrowing so much as a crumb of powerto IU, so the latter got its own back byletting the PP take over last year. IUnational coordinator Cayo Lara wentballistic, having sworn on severaloccasions before the regional and localelections in May last year that IU wouldnever help the PP to take poweranywhere in Spain, but the party’s grassroots – very bravely – chose to ignorehim.

This won’t happen in Andalucia, where IU has enjoyed its littleshare of power in many towns and

villages thanks to alliances with theSocialists. Valderas has said he willconsult the grass roots before makingany decision but that consultation willconcentrate on what the IU is going todemand in return for its support. Itremains to be seen just how radicalthose demands will be. The Socialistswill agree to all of them, no matter howwild or radical they are, because theydon’t want to give up power. They alsoneed to stay in power in order to coverup the corruption that would have cometo light had the PP been able to form agovernment.

All this is bad news because theCommunist-dominated IU hasnever made any secret of its

desire to abolish the monarchy andreplace it with the Third Republic. It alsoconsistently supports any wild idea theloony left comes up with. It’s the oldCommunist belief that stirring uptrouble and mayhem will eventuallylead “the masses” to overthrow thegovernment and restore society to thestate of grace that Adam and Eveenjoyed before their expulsion from theGarden of Eden.

However, the Socialists seem tohave forgotten just how much IUand the Catalan Republican Left

party (ERC) screwed up Zapatero’s firstgovernment. He couldn’t form agovernment without them in 2004 so forthe next four years most Spaniards wereunder the impression that Cataloniawas the only region that existed in Spain(ERC) and that we were reliving the CivilWar and the Franco dictatorship (IU).Both ERC and IU lost seats in the 2008election, forcing Zapatero to turn to theCatalan and Basque nationalist partiesin order to form a government. All heproved in the long run is that allianceswith nationalists and the loony leftsimply don’t work. What the Socialistsshould bear in mind is that, as a partywith a nationwide following, they havemore in common with the PP. Together, the two parties have always won around80 per cent of the votes in generalelections, indicating that they embodythe hopes and aspirations of the vastmajority of Spaniards. IU has only donebetter in the three elections since lastMay because the loony left-wing of theSocialist Party have voted for it – as theyobviously did last Sunday – to expresstheir rejection of what they see as theparty’s drift to the centre.

During the run-up to the election, the rumour was that Juntapremier Jose Antonio Griñan

was much more conservative in privatethan he appears to be in public. If that’strue, it will be interesting to see how hegets on with his IU partners, especiallywhen he starts making the cuts he’llhave to make to get Andalucia back intothe black.

Sunday’s election has put the waragainst Vodafone on the backburner this week, but I’ll be taking

up the cudgel again next week, when weshould also know what the next regionalgovernment is going to look like.

Open government seems to be oneof Mariano Rajoy’s majoringredients to take us out of this

recession, or at least, modernise Spanishsociety. I opt for the latter. The PartidoPopular (PP) leader has been goingaround, courting other world leadersduring his first 100 days in office, tellingthem about the great changes he has instore for Spain. People like DavidCameron said they were “impressed” bywhat they heard. Of course this wasbefore bad boy Rajoy threw his nowfamous monkey wrench in Brussels andannounced that he wasn’t going to followthe EU’s goal and keep Spain on course toreach a 4.4 percent of GDP deficit-reducing target by the end of this year. No,what Rajoy had been raving about wasbringing his government on a par withother industrialised nations byintroducing a new transparency law thatallows citizens, as well as future investors,to access information that has otherwisebeen difficult to obtain.

The public has 15 days from this pastMonday to give its own two pennieson what it would like to see

incorporated into the new law that wouldbroaden Spaniards’ rights to know aboutwhat their government is up to. Still indraft form, the bill would enable ordinarypeople to demand information fromgovernment ministries and agencies onjust about anything that involves publicmoney. The government entities will have30 days to comply with citizens’ requests. One of the biggest features is that all workcontracts, including the amountsawarded and the names of thecontractors, will be posted on theinternet.

The Rajoy government thinks thiswill curtail government corruption, and dissuade evil businessmen

looking to make a buck, such as thoseringleaders of the Gürtel conspiracy, whoallegedly waved a bundle of cash to agroup of PP politicians in exchange forjuicy public works contracts.

The new law will also punish thosegovernment leaders who fail toobey Madrid’s orders to reduce

their public deficits and curtail runawayspending. Regional leaders would facesanctions, including impeachment andsuspension from holding public office fora certain time, if they do not comply withthe rules. With the law of autonomiesenforced, which separates certain

regional powers from the government, nodoubt this part of the law will bechallenged before the ConstitutionalCourt.

The transparency law sounds fineand dandy and may look good onpaper, but there are a lot of flaws.

First, many of its components, such asmeasures in keeping clean governmentfree from corruption, are already coveredin the country’s criminal code. There arerestrictions that have been establishedconcerning public contracts that, apparently, have been ignored by manygovernment officials. The law will also belacking because it exempts the RoyalFamily from any type of opennessregarding how they spend the publicmoney allotted to them annually. The PPgovernment insists that King Juan Carlos’decision last year to make public certaininformation concerning his expendituresis sufficient enough. The data the king hasstarted to post on the royal website, ofcourse, is general and doesn’t include howmuch his family spends on meals, clothesand trips.

With the internet so accessible tojust about every Spaniard, theproposed law doesn’t address

how, if at all, easier it will be to downloaddata from official websites. Anyone whohas tried to use a Spanish governmentwebpage knows how cumbersome andconfusing it can be. One page that comesto mind is the Finance Ministry’s taxagency (AEAT) website. Just trying todetermine where to surf to get last year’stax information for your filings is alwaysa headache because the page is frequentlybeing “upgraded.” In other words, upgrading means more concealing.

The transparency and goodgovernance law indeed has itsflaws, but it is a start. Rajoy seems

to be taking all the credit for itsintroduction, but last year the Socialistshad toyed around with the idea of comingup with an open government measure. However, according to the ZapateroCabinet at the time, there wasn't enoughtime to draft it before November's generalelection.

Let’s see just how open governmentwill become under this newregulation.

Your outlook on the World nSpecial Feature 13the ewsn

“Go on, give us a tenner” campaignA few weeks ago, we ran a feature on what Cudeca do with the money they receive at events, in their shops etc.

Following that article,Cudeca had their annualpresentation of accountsand medical reports as wellas telling us what they hadbeen doing, what they areaiming for for the future, apresentation of theiraccounts plus their GoldenPin awards.

Speakers for the daywere, of course, Joan HuntOBE who is the founderand President of theCudeca Foundation, RafaelOlalla Martinez – directorof finance and deputydirector, and MarissaMartin Roselló who is theirmedical director. Alsopresent was RicardoUrdiales Gàlvez, CudecaTrustee and the lawyer whoset up their first mandatefor the foundation.

Joan Hunt told thegathered crowd whyCudeca was set up sayingthat her husband had beentold in 1991 that he had anincurable illness. In thosedays there was no suchthing as Cudeca and, inMalaga there was no suchthing as a hospice. The onlypeople who could be of any

help whatsoever was asmall team – that includedMarissa Roselló – dealing inpaliative care at the RedCross in Malaga. This iswhere Joan Hunt’s husbandspent his last few weeks. After that, Joan decidedthat nobody else should bein that position and that iswhere the dream of Cudecastarted. At a lunch in 1991,Joan explained her visionto Marissa and someothers, including SusanHannon who until herretirement last year wasCudeca’s chief palliativecare nurse, and that waswhen it all started to takeoff.

Fund-raising events ledto people asking for help aswell as some moneycoming in and in 1999Benalmadena gaveCudeca the land where thehospice now stands.

She explained that allstaff felt that it was anhonour and a privilege toshare the patients’ lastweeks with them and tohelp them manage andovercome their problemswith the disease.

To finish, Joan explainedthat with an ageingpopulation the demandsfor palliative care andCudeca’s services is boundto increase in the comingyears. Also, the Spanishpopulation is beginning tounderstand what palliativecare is all about –something the Spanishhaven’t had in any greatmeasure before, unlike theBritish, so that even moredemands will be made onthe services Cudeca has tooffer.

Marissa Martin Roselló,chief medical director thengave the assembledaudience a slideshowdemonstration of Cudeca’sgrowth and the manyawards that have beenbestowed on theorganisation through theyears.

Rafael Olalla Martineztook the floor nextexplaining how Cudecahad used the previousyear’s income. The figureswere a great improvementon previous years but it hadto be pointed out that a lotof the income had been

generated by sellingproperty that had beenbequeathed them and this,of course could not berelied on for future years.

The income fromdonations from thecommunity was €242,510.From events held it was€305,966, from “Rastrillos”and sales was €547,322 andfrom “Friends of Cudeca” itwas €208,238. The incomefrom inheritances and theselling of properties left inbequests to Cudeca was€1,184,594. The breakdownof this is that 34% camefrom inheritances, 20%came from the Cudecashops, 12% fromdonations, 11% frompublic subventions, 10%from events, 6% frommembers (Friends), 5%from banks, 1% frominterest earned and 1%from other sources.

As far as expenses went, the total expenses for thefinancial year 2011 were€3.13 million. These weremade up with 74% goingon direct care, 11% beingspent on the shopsincluding rent and

refurbishments wherenecessary, 8% onadministration and 7% onfund-raising expenses.

So, what can you do tohelp Cudeca?

As we said in our lastfeature on Cudeca, if everyforeign resident who isregistered in the Malagaareas padrons gave just €10a year to the foundation itwould ensure thecontinued running of thehospice and Cudeca’sservices – and that’s justthose of us who areregistered.

Imagine the funds thatcould be raised therefore ifeveryone who had aholiday home here andweren’t registered also gave!It would allow Cudeca tomake plans for the future to

be able to look after evenmore people with terminalillnesses and, don’t forget, their services are alwaysoffered free of charge to thepatients and their families. We all go to the odd “do”and happily part with atenner for raffle tickets for abottle of sometimes ratherdodgy wine or we go to abar and part with anothertenner for a couple ofdrinks. Part of life, and it’senjoyment of course, butthink of the good that sametenner could do for peoplewho desperately needCudeca’s help.

So, go on, give us atenner – you never knowwhen it could turn out tobe you or a loved one whoneeds their help!

Go to www.cudeca.orgto find out more about theorganisation and how youcan do your bit to help.

Carrying on from last week’sarticle on the possibleaccidents your pets cansuffer, here is the secondpart of the report for you tokeep – just in case.

Drowning

It is a popularmisconception that all dogscan swim, but this is notalways the case.

You must attempt to emptythe dog's lungs of water assoon as possible.

Place the dog's head lowerthan its body, open itsmouth and begin to pumpthe chest by pressing downon the ribs and releasing thepressure immediately.Repeat at five-secondintervals.

Choking

Sometimes a piece of stick, bone or small rubber ball

may get stuck in a dog'sthroat. Your dog may beunable to breath as a resultand swift action is necessary.

Open the dog's mouthcarefully and see if you cansee the object.

Pumping the chest, as in thecase of drowning (see above)may dislodge the foreignbody. Get your dog to the vetas soon as possible wherethe object can be removedunder anaesthetic.

Adopting a Pet - partone

Often a puppy will not besuitable for you for onereason or another soadopting a senior pet maywell be the answer.

The older, more mature dogwill normally give you all thelove a puppy will but will bepossibly quieter and needless walking so, for an older

person, an older dog wouldbe ideal.

The upcoming holidayseason may be an excellenttime to put some balance inyour life and adopt a seniorpet. Senior pets can and dobond very strongly withadopters. Many seem tounderstand they have beengiven another chance at ahappy life and are gratefulfor the opportunity to lovesomeone and be loved inreturn.

Consulate conference givesgood adviceTuesday morning sawDuncan Burrell from TheNews Helpdesk attending aconference given by theBritish Consulate Malagathat informed us of what todo in many situationsincluding robbery and theft– both from the home andin the street, a report fromTrafico on what to do aboutfines in respect of drinkdriving, licences, accidentsand legal paperworkpertaining to thesesituations.

Around 70 peopleattended the conferenceand we will be running aseries of articles in the nextfew weeks to tell you whathappened.

The British Consulate inMalaga is one of the busiestin the world dealing withsome 70 deaths a month,60-70 arrests a month, 25-30 serious injuries resultingin hospitalisation, andhelp with repatriation. At arecent inland roadshow, one of the questions askedwas “What number shouldyou dial in an emergency?”60% of those presentanswered: “999”! Wrong,it’s 112 which is the mainemergency number whereyou can speak tosomebody in English.

The local police cameout with some very usefultips and advice on what todo in the case of robberiesor assaults on the personand what to do to avoid itwhich we will cover in thecoming weeks in moredepth.

One of the topics weshall touch on this week isCybercrime and someuseful tips on how to avoid it.

“Keyloggers” are peoplethat log into your computerremotely and can seeeverything you type, including bank accountnumbers and all manner ofpersonal information. Theythen sell on theinformation to a thirdparty. Keyloggers can onlybe prosecuted for invasionof privacy as it’s the thirdparty who actually committhe crimes such as fraud.

Obviously do not putthings such as the fact thatyou may be going onholiday on social networkpages. It will not just beyour best friend that you’retelling. There are manypeople who scour thesesites and they will thenknow that your house isempty – do not invite aburglar into your home thisway.

“Farming” is where youare directed to a mirror siteof where you think you arelogging on to. This is verycommon in online bankingwhere you will be puttingin passwords, accountnumbers and all sorts ofpersonal information.

Some of the useful tipsto do with working withyour computer are:1. Stick to the system youknow2. Visit trusted sites only3. Don’t allow anybody elseto control your site – ebay isa very common one whereyou can pay someone elsefor goods – only pay ebayor via paypal. If you have topay the seller and you’redesperate to have whatthey’re selling make sureyou get all their detailsincluding their address, bank details etc.,

If you are shoppingonline at, for instance ebayor Amazon, it’s a good ideato have a separate bankcard with a maximum of,say €100 spend power, hence limiting any roguesspending power shouldyour details be passed on.

Obviously, it is up to youto use some commonsense so ask yourself thefollowing: “If I’ve just wonthe lottery in Nigeria, butI’ve never bought a ticketeven though someone hasemailed me that I have, how could I possibly havewon?” You haven’t ... it’s ascam: “If I’ve never askedfor a loan, why is my banktelling me they’re giving meone and need my bankdetails?” Remember, abank will never contact youby email so, you haven’t gota loan approved and yep,it’s another scam. “Whyhave I got a parking ticketto pay in Timbuktu whenI’ve never been there?” Thepolice, again like the banks, will not contact you byemail so don’t pay it, it’s yetanother scam. And finally,if you’re far Eastern secretgirlfriend hasn’t got themoney for her ticket home, don’t be tempted to pay forthe ticket and dump herand run – it’s, yes, you’veguessed it, another scam!

More on this soon.

‘Liability for damagecaused by hunting dogs’In many areas of ourprovince rural properties arelocated in, or close to, areasreserved for hunting (Cotosor Reservas de Caza). It isfairly normal in Spain thathunters are accompanied bytheir own dogs, but thesedogs can sometimes causedamage to neighbouringproperties.Spanish law dictates that

hunters must be licensedwith the local authority andif they hunt with dogs, theymust take out an insurancepolicy for Civil Liability. Therefore damage

caused by hunting dogs orother animals is one of thefew cases of strict liabilityunder the eyes of the law, sothat compensation isvirtually automatic unless itis proven that the otherparty, the victim, was toblame.Recently, De Cotta Law

successfully defended aclient who suffered damageby hunting dogs. The victim owned a

house near a huntingreserve, and his property isused for the breeding ofparrots and other exoticbirds. It was on one occasion

that the owner returned tohis property to find thatseveral birds had been

attacked by dogs, resultingin the serious injury anddeath of many of them. However, the local

‘Guardia Civil’ were able tolocate and apprehend theowners of the dogs andtherefore a case was broughtagainst the hunters. In court, De Cotta Law

successfully acted for thebreeder of the exotic birdsand was able to securecompensation of some6,000 euro; which was paidby the insurance companyof the hunting dog owners. This is an interesting case

as it is clearly underlinesthat dog owners should beaware that they are liable forthe damage their animalscause, and that they musthave adequate insurancecover. In addition the case also

shows that if one suffersdamage or loss caused by adog or other animal, there isthe opportunity to seekfinancial compensation.

If you would like to know moreabout seeking compensation or civillitigation, please contact Javier FloridoMartin at De Cotta Law at their Coínoffice on tel: 951 315 161 or [email protected]

Pizarra is a tiny townlying 30 kilometresupriver in the

Guadalhorce valley at thefoot of the 350 metre highSierra del Hacho. Still alargely farming community,it has so far managed toavoid the threat ofabsorption by thespreading metropolis ofMálaga in spite of therecent appearance of thetwo commuter settlementsof Zalea and Cerralba on itswestern face.

In 1483 a hundredsettlers arrived, led bythe indefatigable Don

Pedro Romero de Figueroa, and determined to build atown. The reason for thereluctance of earlier peopleto put down roots in thespot was an eminentlypractical one. High above itwas a huge, unstable rock, forever threatening to crashdown upon them. The rock, known as the peñasco, wasmore than 5000 cubicmetres in volume andweighed almost 3000 tons.

It continued to threatenthose brave, crazy orfatalistic enough to livebeneath it until 1988 when, after it showed definitesigns of cracking, theauthorities finally blew itup.

It was still there in 1922when the palace of theConde de Puerto

Hermos was used for theConference of Pizarra, when leading politiciansand soldiers gathered in anattempt to find a solution to

the war then raging inSpanish Morocco. Thecount had built his palacein the 19th century, afterbuying the land cheaply. The palace still stands inthe centre of town, but is inprivate hands and not opento the public.

One place that is mostdefinitely open tothe public is

Pizarra's MunicipalMuseum. The village owesthis jewel in its crown to theAmerican painter GinoHollander, who spent many

years in the town.Beginning in the 1960s heamassed an impressivearray of archæologicalartefacts from many eras, including the Roman andthe Moorish. When he

eventually left Spain toreturn to America, hiscollection came into thehands of the localauthorities, who took over adisused farm complex andturned it into the museum.

A small gem in the countryside… and a bit of a bang to keep it safe for people to live in

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR CROSSWORD SUDOKU CULTURE & LEISURE FOOD & DRINKHOROSCOPES

MagazineMOVIE SPOTLIGHT By Amy Thomas

Every few years, a horrormovie comes along whichpromises to revitalise thegenre, sometimes for thebetter (‘Night of the LivingDead, ‘Ringu’), sometimesnot (‘Saw’, ‘Hostel’). Fromthe pen of ‘Buffy’ creatorJoss Whedon andCloverfield’s scribe DrewGoddard, ‘The Cabin inthe Woods’ doesn’t somuch set out toreinvigorate horror as pickit apart, analyse it, laugh atit, and then blow it tosmithereens just for kicks. It’s the funniest horror filmsince ‘Evil Dead 2’, the

smartest since ‘NewNightmare’, and withoutdoubt one of the mostbreathlessly entertainingand original movies of theyear.

It begins with an apparentnon sequitur, as workingstiffs Hadley (RichardJenkins) and Sitterson(Bradley Whitford) discussbabyproofing in ananonymous officebuilding. Cut to a gang ofnubile twentysomethings, heading off to a remotecabin for fun, frolics andfornication. But how

might these two storiespossibly connect? Andwhat’s really going on inthe cabin, with its two-waymirrors, mysteriousforcefields and a basementcrammed with occultartefacts?

On one level, ‘The Cabin inthe Woods’ is simply ademonically enjoyablerollercoaster: Whedon’sknack for a snappy, offbeatone-liner remainsunmatched, while first-time director Goddard’scontrol of his action set-pieces (of which there are

many) is truly impressive. But this is also a film witha hell of a lot to say: aboutthe role of horror in ourlives, about thequestionable morality ofaudience manipulation, about the banality ofmodern evil. None of thisis explored in any greatdepth – that would get inthe way of all the fun – butit’s still remarkable to see amainstream movie touchon so many fascinating, powerful ideas withoutlosing sight of its primedirective: to scare thesocks off its audience.

PointlessPotter

e Cabin in the WoodsThe other night before

bed, I was flickingthrough the channels andcame across the BeatrixPotter movie. Normally Iwould have turned it off, butI found myself mesmerizedby Renee Zellwegger’s faceand not in the good way.You see, as a child I was veryfond of the “Peter Rabbit”stories, however when the“Miss Potter” movie cameout, I never felt the need tosee it.

I don’t know why someonethought we needed to

know the ins and outs of theBeatrix Potter’s personal life.Who really wants to watch amovie about a 39-year-oldwoman who is still living ahome with her parents? Thisso-called “bio-pic” wasbasically a period version of“Bridget Jones” – ReneeZellwegger mooning about, nobody wants her, she’srather strange and has thesame bad English accent.

Chris Noonan's direction isall over the place, the

movie felt rushed in places, and is accomplished inothers. Yet, strangely, hedoesn't seem to be able toplace the camera to geteffective use in what are themany static "talky" scenes. His direction of the actorshas them all spouting thelines at a level of barely-suppressed hysteria. It's as ifsomebody had sent spikedCool-Aid back in time andtopped up their teacupswith it.

The movie is set aroundthe period in Potter´s life

before she was published. It's 1902 and Beatrix Potter isbeing stifled by her social-ladder-climbing parents.Always a teller and writer ofstories, Beatrix breaks freefrom her suffocation andtakes her tale of Peter Rabbitto the Warne publishers –where she is pleasantlysurprised to find a dealoffered and young NormanWarne assigned personallyto aid her in her firstpublishing venture. But asthe pair start to fall in love, and the book takes off, thepressure from homethreatens to derail herchance of happiness.

The only explanation whyPotter's illustrated

children's books made hersuccessful was because theywere done in colour. Potteris shallowly presented as anartistic dreamer, when shewas quite the opposite. Itmight come as a surprise tothe audience that she hadsuch a wealthy upbringingin the very lap of luxury, when her children's booksdescribe ananthropomorphic world ofbucolic farm animals andgarden pests, set amongrustic cottages andhedgerows.

However, one of thestrange things in this

movie, is that on more thanone occasion you see Pottertalking to her illustrationsand – even weirder – theillustrations move. I don´tknow if Noonan was makingout that Potter wasdelusional, but it was a bitodd to say the least.

Apart from the fact thatthis movie is filled with

anachronisms, the story ispretty pointless. I think it issafe to say that this is one tomiss!

A fiery new start to this season occurs as we move into your sign, an entirely freshoutlook suggests a breaking away from the past and looking forward to a futurefilled with brighter possibilities. Nothing will happen over night but hope will bebrimming from within and this newfound inspiration is going to energise you. Themore in control you are, the stronger you become - do not give others an openingto challenge your position.

You will probably be better off if you can find a way to work on your own this week.Avoid conflict where possible but do not back down from going after your hopes, dreams and goals. You must keep in mind what you want and where you are tryingto get to in the future. The effort and quality you put in now can pay off big later onfor you. If some things seem slow bear in mind that certain things need to happenin the right order for the optimal outcome.

You may been wishing long and hard for something, waiting for something to shift, open or change. If you direct your thoughts you will find that they hold tremendouspotency but you could be feeling impulsive preferring to take action first and thinkabout the effects later on. If you direct this energy towards obtaining certain goalsand desires, knowing what you are going to do and why, this can be an incredibletime in your life.

The simple truth is that all that negativity and restrictions of the past are over anddone with, you have entered a new phase that allows your sign's qualities ofleadership and position to shine through. The days of following behind others aredone, this however, means summoning up your inner courage and strength andnot allowing your fears or habits of the past to hold you back any longer. Financialand material areas of life need re-assessment.

More than perhaps ever in your life have you had to pay attention to everythought and every step. You have been humbled in discomforting ways in thepast year and you will be shortly coming out the other side of that tunnel. Youhave a naturally born role and claim it with confidence and certain others willhave no choice but to stop, listen and invest in you. Never underestimate thetalents you have been given.

Change is possible - something does not have to stay the same forever and healingcan take place. You may find that new desires rise up from within based on recentchanges and findings. The only real way forward is to make choices for the rightreasons, no matter what they look like, that are best for all. A rare sort of innercourage will fill you now, make the very most of it. Advancements or a promotioncould occur.

Something that held you back in the past may also used as a reason or excuse notto move forward now. However, some restrictions are loosening their chains overyou and there is no reason any more not to go full steam ahead. You can see throughthe games and drama that others are using and instead of settling for mediocrityyou have a shot at excellence. The more you move forward the richer your life willbe in both wealth and overall happiness.

A situation may have tried to drag you down and you may for a few days let it getthe better of you. You are now finding a way to feel far better about a recent burden.Either you released your responsibilities connected to a certain situation or you letgo of your attachment to the outcome. Relationships across the board aredeepening and increasing in meaning. More fun and adventure are about to appearin your life too.

A lot of people could be wondering how on earth you are going to handle things,it is as if most individuals seem to be walking around in a dazed and confused state. That means you need to keep moving forward with confidence and determination, take your time and make sure the things you do are done with precision. Creativelyyou will have bursts of energy with your mind racing as innovation burns throughyou like wild fire.

You are in a reflective mood lately, you could feel that you have reached a pointwhere time is more precious than gold. The home and the heart are important toyou and you will be striving to make choices that stem from these issues. This is atime of stability for you with promises of wealth and prosperity, the main key is toremain on the path and try not to mess things up for yourself. Do the things thatwill bring you positive results.

If you have a desire to change something this week, feel it with all your heart andthen speak up. This is not the time to give up, turn away or decide to make radicalchanges to your current path or direction, the idea is to take it all in, but to resist takingimpulsive action. You could be influenced by powerful emotions that may not betelling the whole story just yet. Just be patient and allow events to develop in theirown natural time.

Down to earth time for you and you will likely be getting in touch with what holdsthe greatest meaning for you on the material plane. Something will give you areason to feel better about what you already have and what you are soon to gain.Make sure that you communicate honestly with deliberation and you will find thatyou attract what you seek. Times like these remind you to remain in the momentand not to get too far ahead of yourself.

To translate the simple idea of liking something into Spanish is not as straightforward asone would wish. The appropriate verb is gustar but it literally means to be pleasing to.Rather than going into long drawn-out and excruciatingly boring grammaticalexplanations, let's just look at some examples which you should be able to chop andchange to fit in with whatever you want to say.

Me gusta la paella - I like paellaNo me gusta el gazpacho - I don't like gazpachoMe gusta jugar al golf - I like playing golfNo me gusta jugar al tenis - I don't like playing tennis¿Te gusta ir de compras? - Do you like going shopping?¿No te gusta ir de paseo? - Don't you like going for walks? Le gusta means either he or she likes. You should know by the contextwho it is being talked aboutNos gusta - We like and Les gusta - They likeNow. if instead of saying that you like something, you want to say thatyou would like something, it changes to Me gustaríaMe gustaría ir a Australia - I would like to go to AustraliaMe gustaría comprar un coche nuevo - I would like to buy a new car.¿Te gustaría venir al cine? - Would you like to come to the cinema? And if you want to say you love something, (but not someone - that's adifferent verb)you use encantar in exactly the same way as gustar.Me encanta vivir en España - I love living in SpainMe encanta ir al teatro - I love going to the theatre and, of course, Me encantaría is I would loveMe encantaría visitar las cuevas de Nerja - I would love to visit thecaves in Nerja.

Ya está - That's it Hasta el próximo - Until next time. Valerie

e Voice wasn’t quite the hit it should be..

Judges (left to right) Jessie J, Danny O’Donaghue, will.i.am & Tom Jones

Sir Tom Jones, Jessie J, DannyO’Donoghue and will.i.amturned out on Saturday night topick ten each from the peopleauditioning for a place for thechance to be coached by one ofthese four top people in thecurrent music scene. The format sounded like a goodidea.A number of singers wenton stage with the audiencefacing them to give it all theyhad, while the four judges swungtheir chairs around so they werenot influenced by the way thesingers looked – thus the title ofthe show as they should haveonly been influenced by TheVoice. So far so good. What actually happend was a bitlike seeing Britain’s Got Talent

singers but with blinkers on.Once the judges decided theywould like to work withsomeone, they hit a big redbutton on a table in front of whatappeared to be an oversizedairline chair and the whole unitswung round. No buttonpressed ... no swinging round tosee what you’d missed before theend of the performance. But,and here’s the big but, if morethan one judge pressed thebutton, the singer got to choosewho would mentor them andhopefully win the competition. Two of the singers came out andsung Jessies J songs – but onlyone chose her as a mentor andMs J seemed rather peeved thatthe second girl didn’t choose her

but went for will.i.am (what sortof a name is that anyway?)instead.Another of the singers was achap who had sung in the boyband “Five” a few years ago, buthe didn’t get picked by anybodyso off home he went.A couple turned up who hadboth entered the competition, she later than he. He, MaxMilner got picked by all thejudges and chose Danny as hismentor and madcap YouTubehit Ben Kelly made you see whyhe’d had over a million hits. The problem with the show? Thejudges were apparently in acompetition all their own andseemed on occasion to forget tovote in time. More next week.

Strange place fora honeymoonGareth and RachelMawsdley are both in thearmed forces and enjoyed afairytale wedding at aGeorgian manor house lastyear. However, they wereonly able to spend a fewnights together before pre-deployment training beganfor their respective tours ofAfghanistan.

35-year-old Rachel is aSquadron Leader in theRAF while husband Gareth,32, is a LieutenantCommander in the RoyalNavy.

Both began a six-monthspell at Camp Bastion inNovember last year so theydecided to have theirhoneymoon in Helmandprovince and mark theirfirst six months of marriagein a steakhouse on thedesert base. Gareth said.“There’s no alcohol on baseso instead of a bottle ofwine we shared a bottle of

pop. As we shared somenachos, surrounded by USmarines and everybodycarrying weapons, welooked at each other and itwas possible to imagine itwas a normal romanticnight back home.” – homebeing Bath in the WestCountry.

The couple live inseparate communalquarters on the base andrarely have time alone. They took part in the base’shalf-marathon on NewYear’s day and Rachel saidthey try and go for a runtogether or have a coffee sothey have some time foreach other. The couple willbe returning to the UK inMay and have alreadyplanned a “proper”honeymoon in Rwandaand Tanzania going onsafari, doing a bit oftrekking but, Gareth says:“most of all lie on the beachtogether”.

A new superstar in the first week? The other talent show backfor this year’s efforts wasBritain’s Got Talent withtwo new judges. AleshaDixon seems to think thatall she has to do is laugh tobe amusing. However,Simon Callow’s rabbit outof the hat was now-manDavid Walliams and when acouple on roller skatesappeared on stage ... well, need we say more?! Theshow came across as farslicker than The Voice, which is an Americanimport (review of the firstweek above) but has had afew years’ head start to getit right. Even so, the first week’s

ratings certainly went toBGT and the acts were asweird as ever, to whit:Barbara and Bradley, known collectively as“Barbara and Bradley”, had

an act born out of toomuch time spent behind aclosed door where societycan’t see: Barbara did animpenetrable poem, whilethe portly Bradley wore aten-gallon hat and danceduninterpretively behindher. “It started when I had aSiamese cat and it died,”Barbara said of her muse.“Also, I was on the Kilroyshow.” Bradley wasn’t badvalue either: “My specialtalent will hopefully bringBarbara’s poetry back tolife,” he deadpanned. Sothey were well suited, butBarbara squished anythoughts of a physicalconnection: “We’re not inany relationship becausehe looks like an owl, doesn’the?” You simply couldn’tmake it up, could you?As time ticked down you

knew a belting act was on

the way and if you didn’t,Simon Cowell helpfullyflagged it up by turning hisnose up at JonathanAntoine, a 17-year-old withthe hair, build and dresssense of Hurley from Lost.Cowell turned to CarmenElectra who was standingin for Amanda Holden andmurmured, “Just when youthought things couldn’t getany worse …”In the pre-act interview

Jonathan stood with hisfriend Charlotte Jaconelliwho, they said, had stuckup for Jonathan when hewas being picked on. Hesaid she’d boosted hisconfidence after a lifetimeof taunts about his weight. When asked by Cowell

(who clearly assumedJonathan would hold backCharlotte) who thought itwas a good idea to performtogether she replied: “Oursinging teacher”.With that the couple

launched into theirperformance and by theend of it Jonathan’samazing tenor voice, coupled with Charlotte’sshow-songs style hadeverybody on their feet andCowell trying to persuadehim to dump Charlotte. Hisreply? “We came here as acouple, we’re staying as acouple.” The votes from the

judges were three “Yes’s”

despite Cowell’s voicedreservations about themgoing through together.Cowell said later toWalliams that we just mayhave seen the newPavarotti. The judges wereobviously ashamed athaving dismissed Jonathanon the basis of his looks.

And to see the look onthis previously persecutedyoung man’s face when herealised how mucheveryone in the audiencehad instantly fallen in lovewith him and his voice wassomething to behold.

If you missed it all onSaturday, have a look atwww.youtube.com andsearch for JonathanAntoine audition – Britain’sGot Talent 2012. If you havea dry eye by the end of it, golook for your heart becauseyou must have lost itsomewhere and don’tforget his name – he’s goingto be big in success as wellas stature!

Scientists have beenworking for years to helppeople with injection-phobia, as well as thedoctors and dentists whohave to deal with stressedpatients. Now it looks as ifa Somerset-based inventormay have come up with thesolution.

Meanwhile, in theUnited States researchersare trying to find a way toavoid needles altogether. They have tested a vaccinepatch on mice, which cutsout the need for painfulneedles.

Companionship

Researchers now realisethat disgust does morethan cause a sick feeling inthe stomach – it protectshuman beings fromdisease and parasites, andaffects almost every aspectof human relations, fromromance to politics.

Valerie Curtis, a self-described “disgustologist”from the London School ofHygiene and TropicalMedicine, put it succinctlyat a recent conference ondisgust in Germany:“Disgust is in our everydaylife. It determines ourhygiene behaviours. Itdetermines how close weget to people. It determineswho we’re going to kiss, who we’re going to matewith, who we’re going to sitnext to. It determines thepeople that we shun, andthat is something that wedo a lot of.” Her studies andthose of other researchersmay have practicalbenefits, including clues toobsessive compulsivedisorder, some aspects ofwhich – like excessive hand

washing – look like disgustgone wild.

On the other hand, some researchers aretrying to inspire moredisgust at dirt and germsto promote hand washingand improve publichealth. Dr. Curtis isinvolved in efforts inAfrica, India and Englandto explore what she calls“the power of trying togross people out”. Oneslogan that appeared to beeffective in England ingetting people to washtheir hands before leaving abathroom was “Don’t bringthe toilet with you.”

Dr Curtis said the powerof disgust to affectbehaviour is unquestioned, and that power ought to beput to good use. In one ofher projects, she workedwith an Indian publicrelations agency to comeup with a disgust-basedcampaign to encouragehand washing amongmothers in small villages, which could save countless

children’s lives lost todiarrhoea and otherdiseases. The result was is askit involving a supermomand a disgusting, dirtyman. The man makessweets using mud andworms, stops in the middleof the performance to rushoff because he hasdiarrhoea, never washeshis hands and doeseverything possible to berevolting.

Supermom on the otherhand is scrupulously clean. Her children don’t get sick, the skit makes that quite

clear. In fact, her babygrows up to be a doctor. She washes her hands allthe time.

The prominence ofdiarrhoea in the skit is noaccident. Dr. Curtis said itwas important to talk aboutthe very things that disgustus, because they oftenpresent dangers to publichealth. “We need to talkabout excrement,” she said, using a punchier single-syllable word for maximumeffect. “Which is worse?”she asked. “To talk about it,or to let kids die?”

Survival’s ‘ick’ factorUnlike fear, sadness or anger, psychologists have rarely given muchimportance to the feeling of disgust, until recently.

Screening for a pilot projectinvolving 10,000 Scots whohave smoked 20 cigarettesa day for at least 20 years isdue to start before the endof 2012, with the firstresults to be reportedbefore the end of 2014.

Lung cancer is the mostcommon cause of cancerdeath in the UK, andScotland has one of thehighest rates of lung cancerin the world. Fewer thannine per cent of lungcancer patients are alivefive years after diagnosis, as

the disease is most oftendetected in the laterstages when it is difficult totreat.

Known as the EarlyCDT-Lung, the test detects anumber of antibodiesproduced by the body'simmune system when apatient has lung cancer. Atthe end of the four yeartrial, the NHS will analysethe results to decidewhether the test is a cost-effective screening tool forlung cancer.

Next month marks the55th anniversary of BBC

TV’s ‘The Sky At Night’. It wason 24th April 1957 that anamateur astronomer calledPatrick Moore was offered asix-month trial TVprogramme aboutastronomy aimed at thenovice astronomer. Now aftermore than 710 episodes ‘TheSky At Night’ has become thelongest running TVprogramme with the samepresenter in television history. SirPatrick Moore OBE (as he is nowknown) is 89 years old and haspresented all but one of the monthlyshows. With his trade mark monocle, dishevelled hair and badly fitting suitshe has become one of the mostrecognisable characters on TV.

And what a character he is! I havemet him on several occasions and

he is a genuinely warm and very funnybloke. He has got a wicked sense ofhumour and is quite happy to poke funat himself and not take himself tooseriously at all. His biography ’80 notout’ is both very funny and verymoving when he talks about ‘his girl’being killed during the war and now, after all these years, he can sometimesgo for almost a whole hour withoutthinking about her– but not often.

He has done more to raiseawareness and public interest in

astronomy than any other person andwill be sadly missed if and when hefinally decides to retire – or pass away-whichever comes first! He is probablythe only person still living who haspersonally met Albert Einstein, theWright Brothers, Yuri Gagarin and NeilArmstrong. And after all this he stillcalls himself an amateur astronomerand professional journalist.

To celebrate the 55 years of theprogramme Sir Patrick has devised

a list of 55 objects, known as the Moore55, to be spotted by amateurastronomers around the world andyou are invited to join in. Beginning onTuesday 3rd April and then everyTuesday night throughout April theMijas Astronomy Society are holding aseries of observing sessions designedto complete the whole list. My friendLee Osborne is organising this specialmarathon along with the othermembers of the society and is openingit up to anyone who would like to go

along and have the chance to see someof the wonders of the sky using highpowered telescopes.

Each session begins at 8.00 p.m. andruns until about midnight. The

objects on the list begin with spottingparticular craters and mountainranges on the Moon, then moves ontomore difficult objects such as detailson the surface of Mars, the phase ofVenus and the moons of Jupiter. Therings of Saturn are always a crowdpleaser and at the moment they arelooking splendid.

Then it’s on to deep space objectssuch as galaxies and nebulae, the

North Star, double stars and starclusters. It is a really comprehensive listcovering the most spectacular objectsin the night sky and with Lee’s help Iguarantee an ‘out of this world’evening! Lee and other members of theEnglish speaking society have somevery impressive equipment includingvideo cameras that can show theimages direct onto a computer screen.

Lee Osborne can be contacteddirectly [email protected] forfurther details and directions to theviewing site.

This is a really great opportunity foradults and especially school

children to get involved in this specialevent and even tick off the objects ontheir own personal list. I havereproduced the whole Moore 55 list onmy website that can be printed out andtaken along with you.

Sir Patrick Moore will be hosting aspecial ‘Sky At Night’ programmeon BBC1 next Sunday night 1st Aprilcovering the Moore 55 marathon orcheck out the websitewww.bbc.co.uk/skyatnight. HappyStargazing!

Your outlook on the World nOpinion & Comment 27the ewsn

James Preston – abusinessman in Spain (whereyou cannot have dualnationality!) has fought a longbattle against the Britishgovernment to have the rightto representation in theWestminster parliament.

He brought a case before theHigh Court in London, usingthe offices of solicitors 'probono publico'. The cost washigh in money and time. Thecase went against him. He hasin despair decided torenounce British nationalityand take out Spanish.

You views on this extremedecision is sought.

Editors note: Googling who canand cannot vote in a generalelection in the UK states that you

have to a) be 18-years-old or overon polling day, b) be resident in theUK, c) be a British citizen, aqualifying Commonwealth citizenor a citizen of the Republic ofIreland and lastly, d) not be subjectto any legal incapacity to vote.

It also states those who cannotvote in a UK general election are:a) members of the House of Lords(although they can vote atelections to local authorities, devolved legislatures and theEuropean Parliament), b) EUcitizens resident in the UK(although they can vote atelections to local authorities, devolved legislatures and theEuropean Parliament), c) anyoneother than British, Irish andqualifying Commonwealthcitizens, d) convicted personsdetained in pursuance of theirsentences (though remand

prisoners, unconvicted prisonersand civil prisoners can vote if theyare on the electoral register) ande)anyone found guilty within theprevious five years of corrupt orillegal practices in connection withan election.

However, as long as you can provethat you were on an electoral rôleup to 15 years ago, you can stilleither vote at the polling station inthat same area or by a postal vote.

Interestingly enough you wouldalso have to be a Spanish nationalto be able to vote in a Spanishgeneral election although, asBritish subjects, we can vote in localelections as long as we areresidents in Spain and registeredon the empadron in the area inwhich we live.

How would you like to take part in one of the most excitingastronomical events happening this year and get to see 55 ofthe sky’s most spectacular objects all for free?

I recently read the piece onyour Health & Beauty pagesconcerning breast cancer.Which is all true but there ismore, knowing by havingcancer myself. This medication also givesyou pain in your bones aswell as your joints, sleeplessdisturbed nights anddepression. I have been taking them for

four years now but what isthe alternative? My oncologist said I mustnot miss one tablet as theyWILL Save My Life. Thealternative is – do I wantcancer again, NO thank you!– been there, do not want tohave that nightmare again. The only thing missing fromyour report is whether whenthe five years are over and

you have the all clear, do theside effects go away? Aquestion to be asked andanswered. To all the womenout there suffering thisterrible disease, good heathfor the future. Editor says: We will look into thisand report back but, in themeantime – keep taking thetablets and stay as well as youcan.

We at Animal Angels Globalare fully in favour of cratetraining dogs and can advise ifnecessary – it is one of the

kindest things you can do foryour four-legged friend. It isnot cruel, only if you leavethem in there all day andnight. If a dog is crate trained as apuppy (or little by little if anolder dog) it will feel safe, secure and will always havesomewhere to go when tiredor grumpy. A crate-trained dog will not bestressed when in a cage fortravelling, when at the vetovernight or after an operation– it is a duty to make sure your

animals are happy in a crate! If you leave your dog in a crate(if necessary) when you areout, he will be safe and will notpee or chew the furniture orelectrocute himself and inturn, will not be shouted atand stressed when you return.Of course, some dogs areperfectly happy to be left free,we are talking about the oneswho chew or endangerthemselves. Crate training is a choice but Iwish people wouldn't see it ascruel!

Defending double worldchampion Casey Stoner willhead into the first race of thenew 1000cc MotoGP erahaving been fastest in allthree 2012 pre-season tests.

Quickest at the two Sepangvisits, the Repsol Honda ridercompleted the sweep bydeposing Yamaha's JorgeLorenzo from the head of theSunday Jerez test timesheetsby 0.173sec on his 61st andfinal lap.“Today we were really

pleased with the lap timeswe're running but I think wecan still improve the bikequite a bit before the racehere. Anyway we feel likewe've made some progresson a track like this for us,”said Stoner.

Motorists will endure more pain at the pumps after the Chancellor pressed aheadwith fuel tax rises that will add nearly 4p a litre to already record prices. Drivers’groups and hauliers said George Osborne had ‘turned his back on families’. FromAugust 1st, fixed rate fuel duty will rise by 3.02p a litre to 60.97p. But when VAT isadded, the rise becomes 3.62p a litre. It means the cost of filling a Ford Mondeowith a 70-litre fuel tank will increase by £2.54, adding £60 to the annual fuel bill.

Osborne fuels more misery for motoristsMotors

Alonso masters the monsoonFernando Alonso'smagnificent drive securedan unlikely victory forFerrari at a hugely chaoticMalaysian Grand Prix atSepang.Few would have given

Alonso a hope of gaining a28th career victory givenFerrari's apparent lack ofpace this season. But rain inMalaysia – so strong thatthere was a 50-minutesuspension of the race afternine laps – played right intothe Spaniard's hands.

On a day which tested allthe drivers’ patience,Sauber's Sergio Perezunderlined his class andmuch talked about potentialwith an electrifying drive forsecond place. LewisHamilton meanwhile endedthe day third for McLarenfor the second consecutiveweekend. Mark Webber andKimi Raikkonen roundedout the top five, while BrunoSenna was another to drivesuperbly and claim sixth forWilliams. Scot Paul di Restagrabbed seventh for Force

India, with Jean-Eric Vergneeighth ahead of NicoHulkenberg, and MichaelSchumacher clinchingMercedes' first point of theseason in 10th.With the field on

intermediate tyres as therace began in showeryconditions, Hamilton musthave thought he had doneenough to avoid a repeat ofMelbourne when hedefended his line into turnone at the start. He stayedout in front as the weatherworsened and eventuallyforced the suspension of therace. It eventually restarted

behind the safety car, withthe McLarens holding theiradvantage when racingfinally began on lap 13. ButHamilton suffered on hispitstop, it looked like therear jackman was slowdropping the car, and thenHamilton had to wait forMassa to enter his pit, costing him the lead.Button, who had nippedahead of his team-mate,then tangled withKarthikeyan with the race athis mercy. He had to stopfor a new front wing andnever recovered. That leftAlonso and Perez out in

front, but in the dryingconditions there appearedplenty of time for Hamiltonor the Red Bulls behind himto close the gap.

But Perez was provingunshakable as he madeground on Alonso withevery turn of his wheels.Having built up a seven-second lead, Alonso saw itwhittled away by Perez untilhe was just two secondsadrift. When the driversmade the switch to dry-weather tyres Perez'sdecision to stay out foranother lap cost him fiveseconds in the chase toAlonso, but in five pulsatinglaps he again closed rapidlyback to Alonso. A firstvictory was there for thetaking, but Perez ran widewhen just half a secondbehind Alonso, losingprecious seconds and therace for the lead was over. And Alonso, a veteran of

179 races, found a way totake the chequered flag andsnatch the early lead in thedrivers' championship.

The Annual SuperbowlOpen – now in it's 16th year– had generous newsponsors in the De VereGroup. The tournamentconsisted of pairs andtriples competitions andwas played in exceptionalweather.

The pairs semi finals sawMike Old & Alex Brown(Benavista) defeat AndySalmon (Superbowl) &Pamela Hatton (SantaMaria) whilst MikeDetheridge (Benalmadena)& Diana Johnson(Benavista) beat Pat Fisher& Denis Tolfree(Superbowl). The final wasa very close affair, MikeDetheridge leading 10-5after 12 ends found histeam 14-10 down after 16ends. He picked up a twoon the seventeenth end toset up a close finish but wasunable to match the closedrawing ability of hisopponents.

The triples was playedout in a similar format and

resulted in MikeDetheridge & DianaJohnson again reaching thefinal accompanied by AlanPlimmer (Benalmadena)where they played RichardBurroughs, Paco Sanchezand Tony Wright(Benavista). The gamelooked to be goingcomfortably in MikeDetheridge's favour with a17-8 lead after 15 ends buta double on the 16th gaveRichard's team a chancewhich they looked set tograsp with a dramatic 5 onthe 17th leaving themneeding just 2 on the lastend to snatch an unlikelydraw and force the extraend. The last end saw bothteams drawing shot andnudging the jack but Mike'steam held on, took a singleand were worthy winners.

The club wish to thankthe De Vere Group for theirgenerous sponsorship andthe volunteer umpires andother people who helpedensure the tournament ransmoothly.

It was his first PGA Tourvictory since the sexscandal at the end of 2009led to one of the greatestdownfalls in sports. And with the first major

of the year the Masters onlytwo weeks away, Woodslooks like he is ready tochallenge once again forthe majors record of JackNicklaus. Woods closedwith a 2-under 70 and wonby five shots over GraemeMcDowell.

"I think he really justkind of nailed home hiscomeback," McDowellsaid. "Great to have a front-row seat watching maybethe greatest of all-time

doing what he does best –winning golftournaments."

Woods had gone 923days and 26 tour eventssince he last posed with atrophy, and it showed. Ashe waited his turn to putton the 18th, he was tappinghis putter on the groundand could barely contain agrin, knowing that thelongest PGA Tour droughtof his career was about toend. When he tapped in forpar, he clenched his fist, screamed out, "Yeah!" andhugged caddie, Joe LaCava.

"It's not like winning amajor championship or

anything," Woods said."But it certainly feels reallygood."

The question two weeksago was when would heplay again. Now, it'swhether he can get back tobeing the player who onceruled golf. It was the 16thtime in his career thatWoods has won by at leastfive shots, and it was thelargest margin of victory onthe PGA Tour since RoryMcIlroy won the U.S. Openby eight.

Woods goes to No. 6 inthe world, returning to thetop 10 for the first timesince May 22nd.

Just two weeks after hislatest injury scare, Tigerwas looking asdominant as everwearing his usual finalday bright red shirt towin the Arnold PalmerInvitational at Bay Hill.

Rugby referee sees redOn Saturday 24th March2012 at the University ofMalaga Rugby Stadium,Malaga Rugby Club playedhost to their rivals from theAxarquia Rugby Club in afriendly fixture for theU18s. The match startedbrightly with the Axarquiateam dominant in theearly stages running in twofantastic tries and aconversion.

Malaga were juststarting to fight back, andhad just scored a try, whenan incident involving thereferee shocked both setsof supporters, players andcoaches alike. The referee(a senior 6ft4” player fromMalaga Rugby Club),spotted a late tackle fromthe Axarquia No 8 on oneof the Malaga backs. Thereferee ran towards theoffence and everyonethought that a yellow cardwas about to be producedas punishment for theplayer … instead, thereferee administered anunofficial punishment ofhis own. He ran towardsthe 16 year-old Axarquiaplayer, who was on hisknees getting up, andthrew a full punch into theface of the boy, the soundof the crunch clearly heard

in the grandstand. Shockwas all around. The refereethen threw his whistle tothe ground muttering “Idon’t want to be a refereeanymore” and effectivelysent himself off for violentconduct.

As he trudged off withhis head held low, notsurprisingly, the parents ofthe boy remonstrated withthe referee over the assaulton their son and called theNational Police whoturned up some minuteslater to question toassailant. The Axarquiaplayer was then taken tothe nearby hospital for acheck-up after hecomplained of sorenessinside his ear. The matchwas abandoned. It later

transpired that the Malagaback who had been late-tackled was the son of thereferee.

One seasonedsupporter said, “Ive beenwatching rugby for over 40years and have never seenanything like it. Rugby is atough enough sport to playwithout having a refereephysically assault a player!Incredible andunbelievable behaviour.”

A club spokesmanconfirmed that they wouldbe reporting the referee tothe Andalucian RugbyFederation and would betalking to Malaga to ensurethat the good relationsbetween the clubs wouldbe preserved.

After an impressive 4-2home win last Thursdaynight against RayoVallecano in which Malagahad played someoutstanding football, theytravelled to Barcelona inhope of gaining anothervaluable three points.

It was Espanyol whostarted the brightest withMalaga looking lethargic.Rondon nearly put the ballinto his own net and Uchefor Espanyol shot just over.It was no surprise then tosee Espanyol go ahead, afree kick from just outsidethe box was cleverly firedhome by Coutinho underthe jumping wall on 23minutes. Malaga's keeperCaballero damaged hishand in an attempt to savethe shot and had to bereplaced by ex-Espanyolplayer Kameni.

The lull in play seemedto inspire Malaga, they dohave great spirit at themoment. Maresca hit thepost with a header and Isco

drove a shot against theopposite upright. Rondonthen went close and at halftime Malaga could countthemselves unlucky to beone down.

The second half beganwith much of the samewith Malaga dominatingand, with 15 minutes to go,Pellegrini played his trumpcard – Van Nistelrooy cameon and with his first touchthe Dutch masterequalised. The ball brokein the box after some goodwork by Isco for Ruud toslot it home on 76 mins. The game was turned on itshead just two minutes later,a great Rondon header waswell saved but thegoalkeeper could onlyparry to Demichelis whosmashed it into the roof ofthe net. Isco then wentclose but in the end a fullydeserved three pointswhich leaves Malaga jointthird with Valencia.
