North Korea's chiefnuclear negotiator, RiYong-ho, confirmed onMonday that the Vienna-based InternationalAtomic Energy Agency(IAEA) – the UN's nuclearwatchdog – has beeninvited to the country forthe first time in threeyears.
North Korea expelledIAEA inspectors 10 yearsago after a deal with the USfell apart. In 2003, thesecretive Communist statewithdrew from theNuclear Non-ProliferationTreaty.
The inspectors wereallowed back several yearslater – but were thrown outagain in 2009. Ri Yong-ho
said the aim of the movewas to implement a dealwith the US.
The North last monthagreed to suspend nuclearand long-range missiletests in return for food aid,and to allow UN inspectorsin. But North Korea'spledge to co-operate withthe internationalcommunity was throwninto doubt last week, whenPyongyang announcedplans to launch what itcalled a rocket-mountedsatellite between April 12thand 16th to mark the 100thbirthday of its late GreatLeader Kim Il-sung.
Any launch would beseen as violating UNSecurity Council
resolutions, and the US hasdescribed the plans as"highly provocative".
It is not clear how muchscope for inspections theIAEA will be given – in the
past North Korea haslimited access to key sites. The invitation comes threemonths after Kim Jong-uncame to power followingthe death of his father, KimJong-il.

A fifth of children in Englandwill not have reached anacceptable standard of readingbefore leaving their primaryschools it was announced onFriday.
The first set of statistics tobe revealed in connectionwith people who have beenreassessed to see if theyneeded incapacity benefitsshow that 37% were foundto be fit for work – and thatdoesn’t include those whohave already launched anappeal against thedecisions made. The restwere deemed entitled toemployment and supportallowance benefits. Justunder 29% will getunconditional financialsupport and a further thirdwill receive support to getthem working.
Employment ministerChris Grayling said hewanted to get those fit forwork into jobs "as quicklyas possible". He said in aninterview that those whoare fit to work will be movedon to a Jobseekersallowance which is lowerbut, he added, that the ideais to get them back intoemployment and awayfrom receiving governmenthandouts. He denied therewere not enough jobs for
the number of unemployedsaying: "Every week.Jobcentre Plus receives 80to 90,000 new vacancies...There are always peoplemoving into jobs." Headded that people whohave been on benefits for along time should "takeadvantage" of the jobsavailable.
Richard Hawkes, chiefexecutive of the disabilitycharity Scope, raisedconcerns about thenumbers published by theDepartment for Work andPensions.
"These new figures seemto suggest that over a thirdof people receiving out ofwork benefits such asemployment and supportallowance must have beenclaiming these benefitsfraudulently," he said."However these statisticsdo not tell the whole story. There have beencontinuing problems withthe government's workcapability assessmentwhich has used a tick box-style assessment to assess
people's fitness for work.Up to 40% of appealsagainst a WCA decisionhave been found in favourof the claimant, suggestingthere are still deep flawswith the assessment."
TUC general secretaryBrendan Barber questionedthe validity of the processand also criticised thenumber of claims which areoverturned on appeal.
"It's hardly surprisingthat a test specificallydesigned to make fewerpeople qualify for disabilitybenefits is passing morepeople fit to work," he said."These tests have deemedamputees and terminally-illpatients fit to work, arecosting taxpayers a smallfortune in successful legalappeals and serve no clearbenefit to the very people itis supposed to help. Thepoint of a fitness test shouldbe to identify whethersomeone is fit to work, notto kick people off benefitswhatever the cost," MrBarber added.
One third fit for work Another twoyears to workTesco launched its firstpension scheme in 1973when it expected theirretirees to live until 77 yearsof age.
However, now thecompany expects theiraverage 40 year old to liveinto their nineties. Withthat in mind, Tesco haveraised their retirement ageto 67, making it the firstBritish company to do soand is hoping toimplement the changes asearly as June 1st this year.
A Tesco spokesman said:"Because people are livingmuch longer pensions costmuch more to provide. These changes will makeour defined benefit schemesustainable." However, they have also announcedthat the 172,000 employeesstill working within thescheme – that has 293,000members in total – will notbe expected to work theextra time, but it will hit
their pensions savings ifthey decide to retire at theprevious 65-years-oldretirement age.
Under the new plans,Tesco will also use thelower inflation measure –consumer prices index(CPI) – to calculate theannual increases in itscontributions to employeepensions.
It currently uses theretail prices index (RPI)which was 3.9% in Januarycompared to a CPI figure of3.6%.
However, it has kept themaximum rise in any yearat 5%, twice the level set bythe government.

Innocent until when?David Gilroy has beenfound guilty of killing hisex-girlfriend Suzanne Pilleyafter she broke off theirrelationship.
The pair workedtogether in the samebuilding and it is said thathe killed her in thebasement of the building, hid her body in the boot ofhis car then transferred thebody to rural Argyle wherehe dumped it.
He was not caught onthe CCTV cameras in thebuilding and denies themurder. The body hasnever been found.
The case against DavidGilroy was built wholly oncircumstantial evidencepieced together by policeand prosecutors, but it wasenough to prove his guilt. The jury were presentedwith five crucial strands ofevidence which enabledthem to convict Gilroy ofmurdering Suzanne Pilley.
• Gilroy bombarded MsPilley with more than 400texts and 49 phone callsbetween April 11th andMay 3rd. But after shedisappeared the followingmorning, he did not text orcall his victim’s phone evenonce as he knew she wasalready dead, later tellingpolice it was because he didnot want to “interfere” intheir investigation.
• Gilroy had cuts andgrazes to his hands andarms, which he claimed hesuffered while gardeningthree days before Ms Pilley
vanished. Forensic expertstestified that they appearedmore recent and matchedthose typically inflicted byvictims of strangulation. Apolice photographer alsospotted that he had tried tocover the wounds withmake-up while she wastaking pictures of them onMay 7th, 2010.
• Specially trained“cadaver” dogs, which canidentify the smell of humanremains, showed “interest”in the boot of Gilroy’sVauxhall Vectra and areasof the garage at IML wherehe would have loaded MsPilley’s body into thevehicle.
• Police re-staged thejourney Gilroy made fromEdinburgh to Lochgilpheadon May 5th, 2010, andfound it took them aroundthree hours. Gilroy tookalmost five-and-a-halfhours, giving him time todispose of the body.Vegetative matter found onhis car, which also hadthree fractured coil springs, indicated that it had beendriven “off-road”.
• Prosecutors had topresent evidence that MsPilley was dead to provetheir case. Checksestablished that Ms Pilleyhad not used her bankaccount, credit cards, passport or bus pass, andhad never contactedfriends or family after May4th, 2010.
Gilroy moved back inwith his wife and childrenand denies the murder.

Judge Mercedes Alaya, who jailed him a weekearlier, said she hadfollowed the “principle ofproportionality, moderation, just measures andbalance,” and taken intoaccount the “solid evidence”against Guerrero to set thebail. The prosecution haddemanded bail of €933million. EREgate involvescorrupt officials who haveaccess to more than €600million in governmentfunds which weredestined to help financiallystrapped companies in theregion to make severancepayments to workers whohad to be laid off. Opinion polls carried out by threenewspapers and a major radiostation all predict an outright
majority for the Partido Popular in nextSunday’s regional election here inAndalucia. What caught my attentionwas that the pro-Socialist El Pais and thevery pro-Socialist Cadena SER radiostation came to that conclusion – theirpolls usually favour the Socialist Party.Similar findings by the other two paperswere not surprising. El Mundo is anti-Socialist (but not necessarily pro-PP) andthe ABC has been pro-monarchy since itwas founded in 1903. It became very anti-Socialist during Zapatero’s time, whenthe Socialists did everything possible toplay down the vital role played by KingJuan Carlos during the transition todemocracy after Franco’s death – anunforgivable sin in ABC’s eyes.
The PP’s candidate this Sunday,Javier Arenas, was born in Seville in1957 and started out his political
career there as deputy mayor from 1983to 1987. He spent the Aznar years inMadrid, as labour minister and deputyPM, but headed back home when the PPlost the 2004 general election, aspresident of the PP for Andalucia. Sincethen, a lot of people (myself included)have thought he would make a bettercandidate than Mariano Rajoy, butArenas had his sights set on ending theSocialists’ 30-year rule in Andalucia. If heachieves that objective on Sunday, theSocialist Party will be hit by a politicaltsunami from which it may never recover. The PP wiped the floor with them in lastMay’s regional and local elections, thenwent on to win an unprecedentedmajority in last November’s generalelection. A third crushing PP victory inless than a year just might shatter theSocialist Party beyond repair.
An indication of the Socialists’desperation is the way they areharping on about “copago”, that is,
a scheme by which people will end upfooting part of the bill for their healthcare. The Catalan government hasalready introduced a nominalprescription charge of €1, and thefarmacias have been threatening formonths to charge everybody the fullprice. Why? Because the regionalgovernments owe them hundreds ofmillions of euros and many farmacias areon the verge of bankruptcy. So theproblem is not one of “copago” but of“impago” (non-payment) as JavierArenas pointed out on Sunday. That sameday former Socialist health minister
Trinidad Jimenez was in Malaga scaringvoters with the spectre of copago –something she had been in favour ofwhen the Socialists were in power.
All this reminds me of how for yearsI used to tell people that the SovietUnion would come crashing down
one day “but probably not in mylifetime”. Then I stood back and watchedopen-mouthed in amazement as oneSoviet satellite after the other broke awayfrom Moscow. I’m feeling a bit like thatnow. I’ve been bashing the Socialists (akathe Spanish Socialist Workers Party,PSOE) for years for being namby-pambyarmchair revolutionaries who wouldn’trecognise a worker if you shoved one uptheir noses, but I confess to a certainbewilderment at the way the voters haveturned against them. Another thrashingon Sunday will leave me speechless. It’salmost as if I hate it when my predictionscome true – I always said Zapatero wouldbe the death of the Socialist Party.
The main reason for their defeat inAndalucia will be the cesspool ofcorruption they’ve created over the
past 30 years, but more on that next weekwhen, if the PP wins, we’ll see that thecurrent EREgate scandal is just the tip ofthe iceberg.
Lots of unhappy consumers
In response to the many complaintsabout Vodafone called in to the HelpLine in response to my column last
week, I decided to set up an emailaddress so that people could put it all inwriting with a view to collectinginformation for an action en bloc againstthe company. So, with lots of help fromyoung Abi who lays out the pages anddoes a hundred other things here at thepaper – we went to Google to open agmail account. Gmail rejected a lot ofnames all revolving around “angry”,“dissatisfied” “hopping mad” and “livid”consumers because they were alreadytaken. We were just beginning to despairwhen it finally [email protected]
So there you have it. Please use it andone day Vodafone may get what itdeserves. Last week they put me on
the pay-as-you-go system as I had beenrequesting for months, but they still insistI owe them €35, which I refuse to pay. I'mfiring off another “really livid” missivetomorrow and will let you know whathappens – if and and when somethinghappens.
Balearic blundersTsunami warning
Arrogance never pays off. Tuesday’sconviction of former Balearicpremier Jaume Matas is a clear
example of how one person, who dideverything in his power to ensure that apublic corruption inquiry in his regionwas halted – even coming to Madrid todemand why prosecutors were pokingaround in his interests – saw his entirelife come to a full stop. Matas, a formerminister in the José María Aznargovernment, has been sentenced to sixyears in prison by a three-judge panel onthe Balearic regional High Court forfraud, embezzlement and dereliction ofpublic duties in connection with givingsome €500,000 to a former El Mundojournalist to write glowing articles abouthis administration. It is only one part ofa much larger case regarding the ongoingcorruption schemes in theMediterranean islands.
Matas’ dream was to turn hisarchipelago into a first-classtourist destination, hopefully
knocking Monte Carlo off the jet-setters’lists. He pumped millions of euros intomodernising Palma de Mallorca, buildingan opera house, the Calatrava, by the sea, setting up a modern road network inIbiza, and constructing a sports complexthat was to bring some of the world’sgreatest events to the islands. Rafa Nadaland Roger Federer played a benefitmatch on May 2nd, 2007 for the sportscentre’s inauguration. It was the lastcrowning moment for the PartidoPopular (PP) leader, who went on to losehis re-election bid later that month andbe prosecuted three years later. Thosewho shared his ambition had to also paya price – the costs of doing business withMatas, prosecutors say, were high. ThePalma de Arena sports complex wasbudgeted at €44 million but ended upcosting €100 million. Where the the restof the money go?
Royal son-in-law Iñaki Urdangarin, who is expected to be ordered tostand trial in the coming days for
allegedly diverting public funds hereceived from the Matas government, was a close collaborator. He wasemployed by Matas to organise a series ofsports and tourism conferences allegedlyat inflated prices. It was the investigationinto Matas’ dealings that gaveprosecutors wind of Urdangarin’sbusinesses.
In the end, Matas was unable to stopany inquiry. He even threatened astring of journalists who began
writing stories about the whispers whichfor so long had been circulating theBalearic Islands. His PR man, AntonioAlemany, the former El Mundo columnistand co-defendant, who set up a localstate news agency – mind you, apropaganda organ – was given a three-year nine-month sentence. Lawyers forthe two say they will appeal the case, butMatas still has many more trials to face.In all, there are 26 separate casesinvolving the alleged corruption thattook place during Matas’ second term aspremier from 2003-2007. (He previouslyserved from 1993-99 before joining theAznar administration as environmentminister.) The payoffs to the El Mundojournalist is the smallest of all theseprosecutions he is facing– the tip of theiceberg.
Many in the PP say they were gladto see him go after herenounced all his party
leadership roles after he was formallyindicted in 2010. But this formerBalearics chief knows a lot – he is wellaware of the inner-workings of the PP,who got what, when and where. With theamount of time in prison he is facing andpossible extended jail time from futureconvictions, Matas could become a gemof a turncoat if he decides to offer hiscooperation to prosecutors who aresearching for bigger fishes. The onlyquestion is: will this current PPgovernment allow these corruption casesto continue?
What was she thinking?
Speaking of arrogance. María Doloresde Cospedal, the regional premier inCastilla-La Mancha and the PP’s
number two, almost got her way lastweek by finding a plum post for herhusband on the board of the nationalelectricity grid, Red Eléctrica. The salaryof €180,000 would have been pocketmoney for Ignacio López de Hierro – hiswife gets two fat incomes from the partyand her public position as Castilla-LaMancha chief. Prime Minister MarianoRajoy wasn’t amused. When the news hitthe websites of all the major newspaperson Thursday, excrement also hit the fanat Moncloa. By Thursday night, López deHierro was sending out communiquéssaying he was rejecting the nomination.

So pop in and have a chat to Luna and Juan Ramon about your new kitchen.
When it comes time to remodelling your outdated kitchen or if you want to design a kitchen for your new home – choosingthe right cabinets, lighting, the best appliances, together with ensuring the practicality and ergonomics are right for yourkitchen, can be a daunting task.
A kitchen is so much more than a collection of units and electrical goods, if the kitchen looks good and works well – itmakes you smile, feel proud and happy to be home. Cocinasplus makes the process much simpler and together with ourtwo Showrooms, 800m2 in La Cala de Mijas and 600m2 here in Marbella, we are able to display over 35 different designs, justinspiring.
Initially, we will have a chat about your ideas and thoughts, getting a feel of your wishes. Then we will arrange anappointment to visit your home and take all the measurements of your kitchen. From this, together with your thoughtsand requirements, our staff will create a design for your ideal “Cocina” from our extensive range.
Once we have designed a layout we will give you a call to come in and discuss the design. Our 3D computer design systemallows you to see from all angles how your kitchen will look in your home; with a touch of a few buttons we can changecolours of units, move units around, add an appliance here, change a unit there or try a different worktop – simple.Seeing the 3D rotating pictures in front of you just opens up new ideas, and your new kitchen then just seems to naturallydevelop.
The choice of white goods on the market is enormous, from cheap and cheerful to the height of luxury, again here with ourknowledge we can ease the agony of deciding on which oven, hob, extractor etc to choose, just by discussing with you, what an appliance needs to do.
Once a design is accepted, the kitchen is ordered from Nobilia where it is manufactured to the German quality everybodyexpects and dispatched to us, each unit is fully assembled including the doors (no flat packs and ill fitting units) and fullyfitted within 5-8 weeks. For the DIY of you, once the kitchen arrives, just pick up the kitchen and away you go.
We will find exactly what you are looking for at the right price so come on down and have a chat; there is no obligation or cost.
Look forward to meeting you.
Ian and John
P.S. Remember - La Cala de Mijas Showroom also with over 15 displays ready to design yourdream kitchen.

Basic First Aid
As an ardent reader of theCollins Dog Photoguide Icame across this article, which I feel, might be ofinterest to readers.
Traffic AccidentsA traffic accident is probablythe most common cause ofserious injury to a cat or dog.Always approach the animalwith caution, it may reactaggressively because of thepain.
Move the dog as little aspossible, but if you mustmove it, it is probably best touse a blanket, sliding itunderneath the dog. Seekthe assistance of anotherperson and lift the doggently to safety. Check forheartbeat and anyhaemorrhaging. Attempt tostem excessive bleeding byholding a clean pad or cleanhandkerchief over thewound, binding it tightlywith a makeshift bandage.
Call the nearest vet's surgeryto warn of your arrival.
BurnsThe only recommended firstaid is to clean off theoffending substance andimmerse the body partunder cold running waterfor as long as possible. Seekprofessional adviceimmediately.
Heat StrokeThis occurs most commonlywhen a dog has been leftalone on a hot day withoutventilation. If your dog hasnot already collapsed it maybe panting, vomiting orfrothing at the mouth.
Remove froth and lower thedog's temperature as soonas possible by placing ordousing the animal in coldwater.
Take the dog to the vetimmediately where it will betreated with drugs and morecold water.
PoisoningSigns of poisoning mayinclude collapse, musculartwitching, vomiting, bleeding or convulsion. Donot hesitate to contact thevet. Take some of thenoxious substance to the vetwith you if you know what itis. If the dog has recentlyswallowed the poison, try tomake it vomit. Salt andmustard in water will usuallywork quickly, or a smallpiece of washing soda(sodium carbonate) pusheddown the throat.

Sunshine trip is a successOn a sunny Tuesday inMarch, Lux Mundi, Torredel Mar visited Loja and RioFrio with an internationalgroup of friends – German,English, Spanish andFrench.
Loja is situated in theSierra Loja in the provinceof Granada. The town datesback to prehistoric timesand has been occupied bythe Phoenicians, Romansand Moors. The Catholicsfinally conquered it in 1486.
On arrival, Ana the guidetook them firstly to theMirador de Sylvania, wherethere was an excellent viewacross the valley and thecentral ancient part of thetown set on a hillside. Theyvisited the Mausoleum ofGeneral Maria Narvaez,Duke of Valencia born inLoja on August 5th 1800,died 1868. He was seventimes the President of theCouncil of Ministers ofSpain, from 1844 to 1868,and was known as “TheGreat Sword of Loja”.
The visit continued tothe 25 Jets Fountain, builtby the Moors, since re-furbished and the water ofwhich is believed to havehealing properties. It wasthen up the hill towards thecentre of town visiting theEncarnation Church builton the site of the oldmosque, first started in the16th century and extendedin the 18th century.
In the Plaza de laConstitution, those of thegroup who preferred to restand partake ofrefreshments were left torelax, whilst the hardier
members of the groupcontinued up the hill to theArchaeological Mirador ofthe Alcazaba, from whichthe view of the Sierras, topped with snow werebeautiful and where theyhad a tour of the oldChristian Governor’s Housewhich now houses theHistory Museum.
It was then time toreturn to the coach for theshort drive to Rio Frio, where the trout farm issituated and where theywere able to taste thedelicious fish over anexcellent lunch. There wasstill time afterwards to seethe farming tanks for thefish and strolled along theriver bank up to the sourceof the river.
The final treat wasafternoon tea, or coffee andtypical, local homemadecakes in one of the localrestaurants.
The return journey wasmade through the countryside to Ventas de Zafarraya, being treated on the way tothe sight of the almondblossom and wild orchidsin the fields. Finally downthe winding road to thecoast with the view of thelights of Velez Malaga andTorre del Mar, shining inthe dusk.
It had been a long butmost enjoyable dayappreciated very much bythe whole group.

The consumer watchdogFacua has issued a newalert over fraudulent onlineclassified ads for holidayrentals.
"They offer flats for veryattractive prices. In order torequest the money upfront, the supposed ownersclaim they are unable toshow the flat because theylive outside of Spain or inanother province."
They then request one ormore months' rent as adeposit in the case of long-term rentals, or an upfrontpayment for a holidayrental, then they claim theywill deliver the keys andrental contract uponreceipt of the money.
"But the companyreferred to offers no suchservice and the advertisersare not the owners of theflat – the money goesstraight to the fraudsters,"says Facua.

Horse riders aroundAlhaurin el Grande areusually to be seen intraditional Spanish stylesaddles and bridles, dressed in casual jeansand shirts (unless it is feriatime and the special“trajes” are brought out onshow). But recently ridersof all ages came to LosPrados, a livery yard out inthe campo just outside thetown dressed in Englishstyle black jackets andsnowy white jodphurs toshow off their paces indressage.
It all looks deceptivelyeasy to the uninitiated, after all how difficult can itbe to walk or trot from oneletter to another or canterround in pre-determinedcircles? Anyone who hasever tried it knows only toowell!
Debbie and RolandNewcombe who run Los
Prados try to hold severalinland dressage eventseach year and the latestone attracted some 40entries and a veryrespectable audience on asunny Sunday that wasjust perfect for beingoutdoors.
The morning sessionswere for the beginners –many of these werechildren from the Ranchodel Rio Saturday pony clubin Cartama, run by Jane
Hepburn (pictured withher gang and theirrosettes). The later classessaw the older and moreexperienced riderscompeting at a muchhigher level on muchlarger horses.
But all were plaited andpreened and polished untilthey shone – riders as wellas horses. And by the endof the day everyone waswondering when the nextone would be!

Your outlook on the World nOut & About 17the ewsn
Written by Kym Wickham
As you shoot along onyour way fromMalaga to
Antequerra on the A357 thenew road takes you awayfrom many interestingvillages, so take the time toturn off the main road andwend your way along a fewof the old roads torediscover the “Real Spain”.
The first one we shalllook at is the busytown of Alora,
situated at the top of the
Guadalhorce Valley andsome 40 kilometres north ofMalaga itself on the A343.
Alora is almost atypical whitewashedvillage with an
estimated population ofsome 15,000 except that itappears to span two largehills – one of which istopped by a quitemagnificent castle that wasfirst built by thePhoenicians, enlargedunder the Romans and
then virtually destroyed bythe marauding Visigoths inthe 5th century althoughthe decorative metal doorand Arab mirador survived.
The church andcemetery are at thevery top of one of the
hills, with the cemeterygaining a reputation forbeing an impregnablefortress during the Moorishoccupation followingvarious failed sieges by theChristians over the
centuries. The cemetery –which is interesting in itself– was the subject of theBallad of Alora, the words ofwhich are carved on a tabletembedded in the cemeterywalls, which refers to thetown as “the well besieged”.
It was finally conquered byChristian troops in 1484after nine days of combat. From the cemetery you canenjoy wonderful views backdown the GuadalhorceValley. In addition, thewhole town is surroundedby spectacular views in alldirections. Lastly of interestin the cemetery among thetombs is a small Gothicchapel.
Alora’s 17th centuryNuestra Senora de laEncarnacion Parish
Church in the Plaza Baja dela Despedía took nearly 100years to build and is one ofthe biggest in the province;construction began in 1600and the church was notcompleted until 1699. Itwas built by the Catholicson the site of a formermosque.
Said to be thebirthplace ofMalagueño flamenco
the town’s main event is theflamenco festival held inJune of each year but youshould also go along fortheir Easter celebrations
(pictured above) coming inthe next couple of weeks, and their Romeria in mid-September.
Another of Alora’sclaims to fame is thatfrom 1587 to 1593
the famous Spanish authorMiguel de Cervantes (1547 -1616), author of DonQuixote, made the town hishome.
Alora’s economy islargely based onagriculture and the
cultivation of grapes, olivesand tropical and sub-tropical fruit trees plus, of
course, tourism. Monday ismarket day when the villagebecomes a lively mass ofstallholders and shoppers.
Wander through thesteep streets ofthis facinating
village at your leisure thenpop along to the Barrio delPuente area at the bottomof the hills, just over thelovely river bridges to Jack’sTavern where you willreceive a free drink of yourchoice with your meal. Seetheir advert below forfurther details.
To get to Alora by cargo along the A357from Malaga, turn off
on the A343 and just followthe signs. The efficient localCercanias train runsfrequent and fast airconditioned trains intoMalaga city centre, stopping en route atPizarra, and Cartama.
All the way out in the country… and it is chock full of interesting white villages and great restaurants

It’s sometime in adytopian future and NorthAmerica is now calledPanem. The country looksuncannily like 1930sDepression America, andis divided between thehaves and have-nots.
The rich and privilegedlive in the Capitol, and forthe sheer fun of it, haveinstituted the HungerGames, a TV reality showwatched by millions, inwhich poor young peopleare selected by lottery to
fight to the death. Theyoungsters and theirfamilies live in cardboardhuts and shanty towns inPanem’s 12 districts, andare fodder for the games, but now one girl is tryingto change her destiny. Coalminer’s daughter KatnissEverdeen (Lawrence)volunteers to take theplace of her younger sisterin the knock-outcompetition (Stanley Tuccidoes a fine turn as thegrotesque host) and bidsto outsmart the system.
The movie is based on thehugely popular teen booksby Suzanne Collins, andhas had critics ravingabout it being the best, most innovative sci-fisince The Matrix.
The general view is thatit’s smart and terrifyingand looks like being thenext big literary seriesaimed at youngstersturned into a blockbusterfranchise – there’sdefinitely a gap in themarket now Potter has
finished and Twilight is onits last leg. So, can Katnisschange her destiny?
The film ends with acliff hanger – not asurprise really, as there aretwo more books in theseries now ready to bebrought to the silverscreen if the first is asuccess – and with all thesigns suggesting a bigblockbusting hit there’s noreason to suppose wewon’t be seeing more ofKatniss.

Spielberg on aSlippery Slope
e Hunger GamesSteven Spielberg has
never been one of myfavourite directors. Over thepast two decades his movieshave been quite hit andmiss. To be fair, I´ve alwayslike the “Indiana Jones”movies (“Temple of Doom”,is by far the best), but thelast one “Crystal Skull”, was, well, not great. I enjoyed“Duel” and “Jaws”, bothclassic horrors, where younever get to see the bad guy.Let´s not forget the 1977classic “Close Encounters”with the infamous musicalhand signal, when thespacecraft lands at the endand all the people come out,I always think Elvis willappear – but he never does!
In Spielbergs ‘80s periodcame “E.T”. Now a lot of
people love ET, but I don’t,it’s just a rubber doll with aflat head and quite frankly Idon’t see what all the fuss isabout. That said, I won´t sayit was a bad film, it justwasn´t my kind of film.
This is the sad bit, asidefrom all the movies I´ve
just mentioned, the rest ofthem weren´t very good. Inthe mid 2000s, Spielbergpulled out a fewblockbusters, but theyweren´t exactly quality,“Minority Report” – boring, confusing and pointless,“War Of the Worlds” – Cruisebouncing around and flyingcars (Jeff Wayne´s musicalversion is by far the best, butit´s not a movie). I wasn´teven very fond of “A.I.”, theonly thing I like about “A.I.”was the way Jude Lawclicked his head, “TheTerminal” was boring andHanks is irritating.
One of the only recentishmovies of Spielberg´s
that I kind of liked, was“Catch Me If You Can”, it keptyou intrigued, great storyand who doesn´t loveChristopher Walken?
After plowing through theaction type movies –
which include “Jurassic Park”,another I did not like andthat´s saying a lot, comingfrom an avid dinosaurenthusiast– there are lots of
boring serious movies, like“Munich”, “Saving PrivateRyan”, “Amistad” and“Schindler´s List”. I knowthey are all taken fromhistoric fact, but do theyhave to be so unremittinglydull? I don´t expect a beachparty scene in “SavingPrivate Ryan”, but a movie asheavy as that needs somelight humoured dialogue.
Ithink out of all of hismovies, the one I dislike
the most has to be “TheColour Purple”. The musicalone makes my skin crawl.I´ve never read the book, butI´ve been told the book ismuch better and the movieisn´t even close.
Which brings me to amovie that most of you
may have already seen. Yes, Iam talking about “WarHorse”. To be honest, thismovie irritated me, forstarters, it´s too long, lots ofthe earlier scenes shouldhave been edited or better, cut. At first I thought it wasset in Ireland, as everyonewas talking with an Irishaccent, except for the son.The “funny goose” scenes, seemed forced and childish, again why not incorporatehumour into the dialogue, rather than “look at the sillygoose!”
Most of the scenes wereclumsy, it was like an
old man that kept fallingdown. I couldn´t understandwhy the French and theGerman spoke perfectEnglish, wouldn´t it haveseemed more authenticwith them speaking theirown language and usingsubtitles? Surely the twoGerman brothers would nothave been talking to eachother in English? I onlynoticed this, when theEnglishman and theGerman go to cut the horseloose, the Englishmancommented on how wellthe German spoke English!
The “Gone With the Wind”ending destroys this
movie, to be honest I thinkhe should have called it“Saving Private Horse”!

This week you could find yourself retracing some steps so that you can moveforward with relative ease, you realise that you may have thrown the baby out withthe bath water and the answer to your current challenge is solvable through theprevious associations. Your career and public self are specifically highlighted nowand as you expand your vision while staying open to outlandish projects, breakthroughs will be significant.
To accomplish extraordinary achievements you need to join forces and realise thatno man is an island. This is the time to fight to overcome obstacles but if you seethings all the way through you have a good chance of success. Any improvementsyou make will benefit a significant other and your attention by the weekend turnstowards improving your living conditions and family life. This is the time to wishupon a star and follow it through.
Everything you turn your hand to this week increases and grows in value.Abundance is trying to flow and the universe is nudging you to see where you cancapitalise on opportunities. The key is to see things as they are without any excusesor explanations. Any setbacks you have experienced are likely to provide you withsome hidden gems and no matter how absurd something appears it may just workout in the end. Faith and forward thinking will cut through the dross.
You need to be patient, you are already on the road to success even if it is notapparent but you have to wait for things to catch up with you. Slow down andthink things through before taking action, the worst thing you can do is allowyourself to be rushed or hurried. By the weekend you will gain a deeper insightinto how to make better use of your possessions. Move with the flow and nature’stiming, follow the trends and use them to optimise growth.
Perhaps the truth seems so different to what you originally perceived it to be,there are some very difficult choices that you find you now have to make. Some information or understanding has completely changed yourperspective on life. This is not the time for drastic actions but the idea is tojust roll with what is happening. There will be a lot of inner tension that youare experiencing and finding an internal balance is your main aim.
Keep pushing yourself Virgo, even though you are on top of your game this is notthe time to get complacent. You are only at the beginning there is even moreprosperity coming your way, you are being asked to lead by example. Later in theweek you will be surrounded by those who will be what you need to help propelyou forward, to boldly go where no man has gone before. Socially this is a greattime as there is a natural calmness exuding from you.
All the right pieces are starting to come together in your life as one success leads toanother. It could feel as if another person is taking things too slowly and this maystart to annoy you. We all need a solid foundation from which to spring and this iswhat you will be working on this week. Getting the basics in order, looking at thedetails and paying attention to the fundamentals. All eyes are upon you and youhave to be held accountable for everything that you do.
You have reached a major turning point and this means that you are going to seesignificant developments starting to take place, however, this is one of those timeswhen you cannot look for, or expect instant results, you need to just follow yourpath. You are blessed with an intuition that can see past the actions of others toreveal their true motivation, what they're trying to do and what they're hoping toaccomplish.
Having the patience to allow things to happen naturally and in their own time is notgoing to come easy, even though you might be totally ready and prepared to moveforward, the rest of the world needs time to catch up. This week is loaded with rawpassions and has a sensual streak that is filling you up with a life force that is surgingthrough your veins. By the weekend you will be an unstoppable force. Keep workinghard and you will reap the rewards.
The best thing you can do is just to remain on the path you are currently on and trynot to force things into happening, it is still your mission to create or invent newitems or projects and there is a calling within you that cannot be denied. You arelikely to come across others this week that share a similar vision and talent.Relationship issues rise up and it is all about finding the right level of balance whereyou are not doing too much, or doing too little.
An emotional breakthrough is taking place just make sure you don’t let that impulsivenature of yours break through and say things that you regret later. Any verbalagreements – write them down and get them signed so there can be no doublingback. The key is to try to do only one thing at a time and to then check yourself formistakes. Love and romance blossoms by the weekend and you could get a chanceto do something again but this time you will have learned from the past.
It is always a challenge not to let high tide pull you under, it is very easy to getdistracted right now so make sure that you do not allow yourself to get caught upin another’s dramas. It is up to you to rise above the madness that is going on.Someone whom you trust is about to come to your rescue and help you get backon course, they recognise your true value and what you bring to the table.Remaining calm and collected allows you to see the wood in the trees.

If you have never tried purple sprouting broccoli, visit your green grocer this April! It’s also goodwith pasta and as an attractive vegetable to accompany most meals. This recipe is enough for four tosix persons when accompanied with salad and some buttered new potatoes.

So whathappened tothe weekend? For five-and-a-half yearspeople have been sittingwith their late Sundaybreakfast to watch“Something For TheWeekend” but, last weekthe show wasn’t screened atall – with no reason given –and this Sunday it wasannounced that it would bethe last ever show.
The presenters, TimLovejoy, Louise Redknappand chef Simon Rimmerwere clearly not their usualbubbly selves. So, whathappened and why has thispopular programme beendropped? The BBC2planners decided to axe theshow despite some 21,000fans joining a Facebookcampaign called SaveSomething For TheWeekend From The Axe. Ithas been reported by TheGuardian newspaper thatITV is in talks with themakers of the show,Princess Productions whoown the rights to the show,to move the wholeproduction over to ITVincluding all the presenters.
It is thought that theBBC is axing the show inorder to save money underits Delivering Quality Firstinitiative.
Important messageto our readersThe number of womenbeing tested for cervicalcancer has dropped by aquarter of a million fromthree years ago when thedeath of Jade Goody saw aspike in screeningfollowing her high profilebattle with cancer in themedia and on TVprogrammes where sheurged women to getscreened prompting themto take the tests andpossibly save their lives. Her friend and business

Are you having difficultymanaging on your own?
Going online canbe dangerousIt’s been said around 70%of healthcare is self-care.However, when healthcareturns to medical care –when disease arrives – itrequires information mostof us don’t have. But today, people can findinformation online thatthey could never sourcebefore.
Recent reports suggest80% of online adults usethe Web for healthinformation, and one infour chronic-diseasepatients go online to obtaininformation. It makessense. We go online to learnabout far less importantthings, so it’s natural to doso when a family member’shealth is involved.
Clearly, people arelearning to find what theyneed online. The problemis how to filter the goldfrom the garbage?
Recent research suggeststhat up to 50% of themedical/healthcareinformation online isunreliable.
An internet user’s firstresponsibility is to learnwhich websites are mosttrustworthy. Sometimes it’sobvious: NHS direct, forexample, will give youreliable, evidence-basedinformation. But, thereliability question doesnot always have an obviousanswer. Some patient-
based websites can beexcellent sources ofinformation. But some sitesthat initially seem to besimply informative areadvancing the agenda of acommercial enterprise.
Take www.depression.com– despite its innocent-sounding web address, it isanything but innocent. Themakers of the anti-depressants Paxil &Wellbutrin sponsor it.
Reliability isn’t the onlything that users have to becareful about. Somesymptom checkers maycause alarm rather thanempower. And onlineconsultations withunknown “experts” cancause concern.
A study done forMicrosoft in 2008demonstrated onlinehealth-information seekerstend to “catastrophize”. Aperson Googling“headache” is more likelyto follow links to “braintumour” than to “sinusinfection.”
We should be informedabout health maintenanceand illness prevention, weshould learn as much aspossible about our ownchronic conditions, but weneed to do it sensibly.

"with the hope ofmaking it more widelyavailable".

SOLUTION FOR CRYPTIC / QUICK CROSSWORD SOLUTION FOR SUDOKU SOLUTION FOR QUIZ
The reason that we have seasons isbecause the Earth is not standing
directly upright but instead is tiltedover by about 23½º. During thewinter then the northern part of theEarth is pointed away from the Sunand so receives less sunlight. Thenduring the summer months theNorthern Hemisphere is pointedtoward the Sun causing warm longdays and short nights.
The shortest day of the year falls onDecember 21st and is known as
the Winter Solstice. The longest dayof the year is on June 21st and iscalled the Summer Solstice – so itstands to reason that there must be aday that is half way between thesetwo extremes when it is equal dayand night, and that day wasyesterday. It doesn’t matter whereyou stand on the equinox you willreceive 12 hours of daylight and 12hours of night time.
Or nearly 12 hours – keen-eyedobservers will have noticed that
this isn’t exactly true. The date whenthere was exactly 12 hours of eachwas actually last Saturday 17thMarch. The reason why the equinoxisn’t exactly divided in two is becausethe Sun is not a pinpoint of light butinstead is a disc and daylight ismeasured from the first appearanceof the Sun to the very last glimpse ofthe Sun as it sets. Therefore the widthof the Sun’s face can make the dayabout 14 minutes longer than thenight.
But on the day of the equinox theSun rises exactly due east and
sets due west and will be directlyoverhead at noon if you werestanding on the equator. Each dayfrom now on the Sun will climbhigher in the northern sky but willgradually get lower in the southernsky as the onset of their autumnapproaches. The opposite of theSpring Equinox is the AutumnEquinox that occurs on 21stSeptember. This is the point whenonce again the Sun will be directlyabove the equator half way betweensummer and winter.
This year’s equinox is unusuallyearly, the equinox normally
occurs on 21st March but becausethis year is a leap year it is now one
day earlier. The equinox is also a veryimportant date in the Christiancalendar as the date for Easter iscalculated from this date. Easter fallson the first Sunday that comes afterthe first full Moon that occurs afterthe Equinox. The next full Moon willoccur on Friday April 6th so Easter isthe following Sunday April 8th. Theearliest possible date that Easter canfall on is 22nd March with the latestdate being April 25th.
There is a very interestingphenomenon attached to the
equinox, it has been noted for manyyears that because the Earth is ineffect standing directly up on its endon this day then on these days aloneit is possible to stand a raw egg up onits end. Last September 21st on thelast Autumn Equinox I wasexplaining this on the HannahMurray radio program on Talk RadioEurope and we had quite a numberof people phoning into the programsaying that they too were able to doit. Hannah tried it herself live on theair and was amazed to find that itcould be done (see photo above) soyou may want to try it for yourself –please let me know if you were ableto do it!
Try and catch a glimpse of thecrescent Moon this weekend
when it will be very close to the twobright planets Jupiter and Venus andwill make a really nice image. Look tothe west after sunset on SundayMarch 25th and it will be just to theright of Jupiter, check again thefollowing night Monday 26th and itwill have moved up to join Venus in arather nice conjunction of all three, enjoy.

Some whispers "on thegrapevine" seem to besending mixed messagesabout our group, Ladies ThatLunch, and what we do. So toput to rest any uncertaintiesabout us here is a littlereminder about Ladies ThatLunch!
Two years ago I felt there was aneed locally for women tomeet socially and makefriends without necessarilyhaving to be part of a groupthat had something to sell orpromote. So I formed LadiesThat Lunch.
We do not actually lunch – wejust have coffee and this isdone so that it is easilyaffordable for everyone.Wealways choose venues witheasy parking and our meetingsare always held in a non- salesenvironment.
The main ethos of the group isto make friends and offersupport to one other. Wepromote ourselves as a non-networking group whichseems to have caused someconfusion among people whomay not have come to one ofour meetings.
So let me clarify! We don’t haveany set talks by businessprofessionals nor do we handout business cards or flyers. However, we do not stop youfrom sharing informationabout yourself and encouragediscussion on any topic youwish to share – it’s part of youand your life, so we see it ashelpful rather thannetworking.
Often women ask "do youknow a solicitor, or amechanic etc.," and the groupwill then share their ownpersonal experiences.
Yesterday, Tuesday 20th March at 06.15 am marked the officialfirst day of spring or the Vernal Equinox when the Sun movedfrom the Southern Hemisphere into the Northern Hemisphere.

I just thought I would sharethe hassle I am having with ahouse buyer that didn't takemy advice.
I had a client that fell in lovewith a property and his wifewas even planning theirwedding in the newproperty. They made anoffer and it was accepted butwould not pay a deposit.
I told the client that I couldnot control the property as itwas multi agency. They wentback to the UK.
Another agent then had a
viewing on the property atthe weekend and his clientsmade a higher offer, whichwas also accepted. Hisclients paid the deposit.
I then informed my clientthat it had been sold toanother party.
He was fuming and his wifedistraught, then he blamedme! I reminded him that Ihad told him to pay thedeposit and also that theproperty may go to someoneelse but his reply was "Ithought it was agent speak”,and didn't believe me.
I have received an emailfrom him stating that he issuing me, the lawyer, thevendor, the new buyers andwill stop the sale at any cost!I may use this as a case inpoint in future. He won’t stopthe sale as a verbalagreement means nothinghere – it's all about thedeposit.
Now, not only do I lose thesale, I get a whole load ofgrief to go with it. Never paya deposit eh?!

I felt I had to write as I havebeen so incensed by aconversation I had withsomeone the other day and
have just read that around onethird of people on what usedto be called disability benefitare perfectly capable of workand are therefore fraudsters. I was talking to a “lady” theother day who has been livinghere in Spain for a number ofyears. She used to be a nursebut apparently injured herback while lifting a patient andhas been on benefits eversince “from the Government”.She goes to all manner ofevents and is often seendancing and certainly walks
unaided. If she can do that, she could work perfectly wellin some other job.
Let me make it clear younglady, you are not getting themoney from “theGovernment”– you are gettingit from me when I pay mytaxes every year and you aretherefore stealing mine andother tax payers’ money.Come off benefits and stopbeing a fraudster if you can’tbe bothered to get yourself ajob!

After getting away from theline quicker than his teammate Lewis Hamilton,Button continued to pullaway. Hamilton held thatsecond spot until VitalyPetrov stopped with powersteering problems in hisCaterham on the 36th lapand forced the safety cardeployment. With theMcLaren team pitting bothof their cars in the lap, Vetteldecided to stay in the racefor one more lap. Thisbenefitted him greatly andwas enough to move hisRed Bull into second place.
When the racingresumed on lap 42 Buttonsimply left Vettel to fend offHamilton and team mateMark Webber. As Vettel triedto gain on Button, Webberclosed in on Hamilton, whose McLaren neverseemed as well balanced ashis team mate's. By the flag,Button was a comfortable2.1 seconds ahead ofVettel, with
Hamilton 1.9 secondsfurther down and Webberwithin 0.4 seconds of him.
Further back, Fernando
Alonso showed once againwhat a racer he is placing anexcellent fifth for Ferrariafter making a fantasticstart, moving up to eighthplace from 12th on thegrid in the opening lap.The Spaniard had towithstand prolongedpressure from a fired-up Maldonado, onlyescaping when theVenezuelan made anerror on thepenultimate lap, puttinga wheel over the kerb andlosing the back end thatresulted in heavy contactwith the wall.
Kimi Raikkonen put in asuperb comeback drive tofinish seventh and at thefinish he declared that “itfeels like I've never beenaway”.
Mercedes faded after astrong qualifying. Rosberghad run
fourth in the early laps, justbehind team-mate MichaelSchumacher, who retiredwith gearbox failure on lap11 while trying to fend off
Vettel. TheresultleavesButton in
the
lead of the worldchampionshipwith 25 points.Vettel is on
18,
Hamilton 15, Webber 12and Alonso 10, whileMcLaren head theconstructors' points with 40to Red Bull's 30, Sauber's 12and Ferrari's 10.
David Cameron and Barack Obama have been discussing an unprecedentedinternational deal to force down the price of fuel. In talks at the White House, thepresident is understood to have raised the idea of both the U.S. and Britainauthorising a release of strategic oil reserves to increase supply. But no deal hasyet been reached. Just six days before the Budget, the Prime Minister told U.S.students that the cost of filling up in Britain would make American motorists ‘faint’.

Luke Donald returns to the top spot
Donald played a magnificentseven-iron out of the rightrough to six feet for a birdieon the first extra hole aftermaking it into a four-manplay-off with Korean Sang-Moon Bae and Americanduo Robert Garrigus andJim Furyk.
Garrigus, who forced his wayinto extra time with a
final round of 64, took fulladvantage of his power onthe 18th hole at theCopperhead by hitting a 313-yard drive into the heart ofthe fairway, leaving only awedge into the hole.YetGarrigus missed from eightfeet while Donald holed-outfor his fifth victory on thePGA Tour – so McIlroy'stenure at No 1 lasted just twoweeks.
"Well, I enjoyed it while itlasted," McIlroy tweeted."Congrats Luke, animpressive performance!"
Donald made it into theplay-off with a final round 66,while Bae posted a 68 andovernight leader Furyk shot70.
Meanwhile, it started outwith a day to remember butended up as a tournament toforget for Padraig
Harrington. Afterthe elation of lastThursday'ssensationalcourse record61,Harringtonwas in thedoldrumson the finalday, for the
third round insuccession, the
Dubliner failed to breakpar as he continued hisslide down the leaderboard into 20th placeafter grinding out a level-
par 71 as the protagonistsfired birdies.Ten-under after shooting
the best round of his life inthe opening round, the 40-
year-old completed histournament on seven-under,six shy of the play-off. Within24 hours of Thursday'smesmeric performance onthe greens at the InnisbrookResort, the confidencedrained out of Harrington'sputter.
Andalucia OpenFrenchman Julien
Quesne equalled the courserecord with a superb 64 towin the Andalucia Open bytwo strokes and secure hismaiden European Tour title. The 31-year-old, who beganthe final day three shots offthe lead, birdied the tough18th in a run of four birdies infive holes to finish 17 underpar.
Italian teenager MatteoManassero's second
successive 68 clinchedsecond. Local favourite andevent promoter MiguelAngel Jimenez shot a 71 to tiefor seventh, six shots adrift.
Manassero birdied threeholes in succession from thesixth but needed to collectbirdies at the last two holes tomatch Quesne. However, hebunkered his tee shot at the
par-three 17th and then hisapproach to the 18th, doingwell to escape with pars atboth. That left overnightleader Eduardo de la Rivaneeding to hole his secondshot from the fairway at the18th to tie, but he wasn’t ableto do so, and missed out onsecond place also aftertaking three putts.
Luke Donald returned to the Nº1 spot with a stunning sudden-death victory at the Transitions Championship. And yetanother victory on the US PGA Tour for a European golfer, which just a couple of years ago were few and far between.

The bowls were wellorganised this year by Brianand Jean Lancaster, and youcertainly needed some skillto score. Three differentgames of 6 ends, two gameswere reasonably easy butone game was quite difficultand really did for some
people. Everyone dressed upin something green and theprize for the best dressedman went to FrankRichardson and the prize forthe best dressed lady went toBernadette Thomas. Bothprizes were donated by DesHuddlestone which was
much appreciated.Unfortunately Des hadsuffered a fall and was notable to be with us. We hopeyou recover soon Des. Thebest score for the men wasFrank Ball and the best lady‘sscore was Chris Taylor.

Carzola WonderGoal Saves Malaga
From the teamselection it was plainto see that Malagawould set out todefend in numbers, with Demichelis playingjust in front of the backfour, and hopefully catchMadrid on the break.
Malaga began well andafter just 4 minutes Carzolawas put in only for Casillas tosave, after 14 minutes a goodmove found Isco who shotwide when he should havedone better. Malaga weredominating but werenearly undone on 28minutes, when Benzemanearly slotted home. On 35minutes Malaga went tosleep, a Ronaldo whippedcross was missed by Monrealand Caballero to leaveBenzema unmarked to headhome at the far post. A badgoal for Malaga to concede ina first half they had more orless controlled.
Madrid stepped up afterhalf time, Benzema was a
thorn in Malaga's side andRonaldo looked dangerous.
Kaka set Ronaldo upand Caballero madea great save to keepMalaga in thegame. Callejonheaded justpast on 69minutes forMadrid and aminute laterOzil set upBenzema whoshot over from6 yards. Withall looking
lost for Malaga, a free kickoutside the box gave Malagaa last chance, and what achance, Carzola stepped upto rifle the ball into the topright hand corner from 30yards leaving Madridstunned.
Nothing more thanMalaga deserved and afabulous away point at theBernabeu.
