The Costa Concordia's sister ship is being towed to the main island in the Seychelles, rather than a nearer island, and is not now due to arrive until Thursday. In a statement on Tuesday, the ship's owners Costa Cruises said that maritime experts had advised not to go ahead with the planned disembarkation on the smaller but nearer Desroches Island because the facilities there were inadequate to cope with the arrival of so many people. The statement also said it was not safe enough for the ship to dock in the small port and for guests to get ashore. The ship is now being towed around 155 miles further – to the island of Mahe, which is home to the capital and largest city, Victoria. The company said helicopters would ensure the continuous supply of food and "comfort items" including flashlights. The Italian coast guard said the vessel has no air- conditioning or cooking facilities and an emergency generator powering the radio "could fail at any minute". The company said the Allegra received its regularly scheduled maintenance in dry dock in October 2011. No sunbathing on the beach before 11 am! Iñaki Urdangarin, KingJuan Carlos’ son-in-law,arrived for his long-awaitedclosed-door testimony at aPalma de Mallorca court onSaturday to be met byscores of hecklers, including anti-monarchistand pro-Catalanindependence groups, shouting “Chorizo, chorizo(thief),” among other

insults. Visibly nervous, hestopped long enough to tellwaiting journalists that hehad hoped that histestimony would put anend to the ongoing pressspeculation that he stolepublic money from boththe Balearics and Valenciaregional governments. “Ihave come to tell the truthand defend my honour,” he

said. During 22 hours ofinterrogation by presidingjudge José Castro spanningSaturday and Sunday,Urdangarin admitted hehad continued conductinghis private businesses twoyears after being ordered byKing Juan Carlos to resignfrom the Nóos Institute. Healso denied havinganything to do with the

administrative side of theinstitute or the companies, saying they were run by hisformer partner DiegoTorres. He insisted that hiswife, the Infanta Cristina, had had nothing to do withhis business affairs. At onepoint, the judge toldUrdangarin he was beingtoo vague after saying hecouldn’t remember a lot of

the dates and figures thatwere being thrown at him.Urdangarin and the InfantaCristina left Mallorca earlyon Monday morning tospend 24 hours in Madridbefore returning to theirhome in Washington D.C.Judge Castro has now todecide whether to bringcharges, a process whichcould take several months.

Well, at least it showsthat people read mycolumn! The person whoowns the house that Icomplained kept thewhole area awake fortwo nights last week haswritten in andapologised saying thatshe had rented thehouse out to peoplewho were supposed tobe making a videoabout some dJ’s. Shesays she repeatedlyasked them to tone itdown, was ignored andthey left the placetrashed when they left.let that be a warning tous all!

Some of you havenoticed that The news isappearing later onWednesdays. That isbecause it is now beingdelivered to the placeswhere you get your copyduring the day insteadof overnight so, have awander out a little laterand you’ll find it in thesame areas as before. One of the reasons forthis is that we hadreceived a couple offines for “littering” fromthe councils (one ofwhose ayuntamientoshad even asked for Thenews to be delivered tothem - some people youjust can’t please) and at€300 a pop, that’sexpensive! So, now wemeet the people whodistribute The news forus and, if there’s ever anyproblems they knowwho we are and who totalk to so that it can besorted out. We alreadyhave some different“drop-off” points andsome places are gettingmore than they didbefore so you should beable to find The newseasily, even if it’s a littlebit later than before.

A Supreme Courtspokeswoman said thejudges voted 6-1 to acquithim on the basis that hisinvestigations intoFranco-era crimes weredefensible in legal terms.

However, because ofhis suspension from thebar in an earlier trial,Garzon will not be able tocontinue with theinvestigation.

His decision in 2008 to

investigate thedisappearance of tens ofthousands of peopleduring the civil war andthe subsequentdictatorship of GeneralFrancisco Franco –including ordering theexcavation of mass graves– provoked fierce criticismand anger from those onthe Right who argued thatthe point of the 1977amnesty was to allowSpain to forget the allegedcrimes of that era, and

move on. Two groups ––Clean Hands and Libertyand Identity – whobrought the case againsthim said they did so

because Garzon had"reopened wounds whichwe Spaniards – whateverour political beliefs – hadtotally recovered from".

Figures presented byFinance MinisterCristóbal Montoro onMonday showed that thedeficit last year was 8.51per cent of GDP, well overthe figure of 6 per centpresented by the outgoingSocialist government, andabove the estimate of 8per cent announced bythe Popular Party (PP)government in December.Montoro said the mainculprit was the regions, whose combined deficitof 2.94 per cent of GDPwas more than double thetarget of 1.3 percent.

Improved imageDespite the bad economicnews, BBVA presidentFrancisco González toldEl Pais newspaper in aninterview that “theperception of Spain haschanged completely;there has been a dramaticturnaround with the newgovernment" – unlike theprevious Socialistgovernment which, hesaid, "took Spain to thebrink of disaster due tothe loss of credibility".

However, the documentreleased at the Kursaalconference centre in SanSebastián on Sunday didnot go into further detailsabout the 829 people killedby the Basque terroristgroup during the past 40years, nor did it call on thegroup to disband. All thepolitical parties were quickto say that while the

statement was one morestep towards thedisappearance of ETA, itwas not enough.

ETA announced a“definitive” ceasefire lastyear and has sincedemanded that all ETAprisoners should betransferred to jails in theBasque Country and that

all police action should behalted in France as well asSpain. But in an interviewpublished in El Pais onSunday, Interior MinisterJorge Fernández Díaz saidthe government would notdiscuss the transfer of ETAprisoners or evencontemplate making anyother concessions until theorganisation disbands.

She is now seekingto be reinstated or be givenseverance pay of €10million for the loss ofwages up until herretirement, and a furtherundeclared sum incompensation for her longcareer with the bank.

Commenting on thesituation at CAM after itwas taken over, Bank ofSpain governor MiguelÁngel Fernández Ordóñezsaid: “It is easy tounderstand why people areoutraged by what hashappened here.”

The US firmOdyssey MarineExploration found the 17tons of coins in a wreck offPortugal's Atlantic coast in2007 and had been fightingto keep them ever since. They were taken secretly tothe US “for safekeeping” buta US federal judge recently

Virus affectingBritish farms

Ewes have been carryingthe Schmallenberg viruswhich produces deformedlambs.

The new virus was firstidentified in Germany andthe Netherlands last yearcausing mild to moderatesymptoms in adult cattleincluding a reduced milkyield and diarrhoea but isalso in France and Belgiumand appears to have beenbrought into the UK fromEurope.

The virus has now beenfound on 74 farms inEngland. Most cases are inNorfolk and Sussex andSuffolk. At one farm inNorfolk a vet said that 8% ofall lambs affected were bornwith deformities includinglegs being fused togetherand not being able to open

their mouths to suckle.

The mother sheep showno outward signs of thevirus and can, if it is amultiple birth, produceboth affected and healthylambs.

The virus does not affecthumans but can also affectpigs, cattle and goats and isthought to be carried bymidges.

It is hoped that the viruswill burn itself out beforethe midges start circulatingthis year. Five of thediagnosed cases so far havebeen in cattle, 69 in sheepand none to date in otherspecies. The latest positivecases have been identifiedon the Isle of Wight,Wiltshire, West Berkshireand Gloucestershire.

However, there were no reports ofinjuries on the Allegra and the boat isbeing towed to the Seychelles and is due toarrive tomorrow (Thursday). Today we're going to try to get idiomatic. By that I mean nothing more or less than learning afew phrases which will make you sound like someone who knows what you're talking about.Of course, when people start rattling back to you at top speed it may be a different kettle offish but instead of getting in a panic, try to relax and see if you can get the gist of what theyare saying. You don't need to understand every word. Just get the idea they are trying toconvey. So, we are looking at the verb "echar". It can mean to pour, to throw, to add. Let's findsome everyday situations where it might be useful for us to know .

Echar agua is to pour water, Voy a echar agua en el vaso - I'm going to pour water intothe glass. ¿Quieres que te echo un poco de agua? - Shall I pour you some water? But, on the other hand, if you say echar agua en el mar (literally pouring water in the sea)it is the equivalent of carrying coals to Newcastle."Martin, llegó en España con sus cinco perros. Es como echar agua en el mar." "Martin arrived in Spain with his five dogs. Talk about carrying coals to Newcastle!"If you are cooking you will often echar sal - add salt (al gusto - to taste)If you are tired it is a good idea to echar una siesta - to have a siestaDespués de tanto trabajo voy a echarme una siesta - After working so much I'm goingto have a siesta

If you want to have a look at something you can echar un vistazoEl coche hace un ruido extraño. ¿Quieres echarlo un vistazo?. - The car is making astrange noise. Can you have a look at it?If someone is furious you can describe this as echando chispas (literally giving forthsparks) Cuando María vio la casa después de la fiesta estaba echando chispas - When Maria saw the house after the party she was hopping mad.

Echar de menos is to miss somebody or somethingEcho de menos a mis nietos - I miss my grandchildren. But not to miss the bus which is perder el autobús (literally to lose the bus).

Remember, learning a language is a gradual thing. Just adding a few expressions can make life easier and more enjoyable.

As I always say Poco a poco - Little by little

Hasta la próxima Until next time Valerie.

Banks at it again

Barclays has stressed that itdoes not agree with thetreasury’s estimate of £500million, insisting that £200million would be nearer themark! It is the first time thecurrent government hasclawed back revenuesretrospectively ensuringbillions of pounds of taxeswill have to be paid in thefuture.

Barclays said it flaggedup the schemes to HMRC"in a spirit of fulltransparency" and insistedthat it always operateswithin the law. But thegovernment decided theschemes, while legal, werein breach of a code ofpractice that has seen allthe major banks pledge topay their fair share of taxes.A spokeswoman for thebank added: "Barclaysrespects the decision of

HMRC and thegovernment to adjust thetax laws and will, of course, comply with the modifiedlaw once it is in place."

One of the tax schemesinvolved Barclays avoidingpaying corporation tax onprofits it made by buyingback its own IOU-notes.The Treasury said it willmove to block the recentuse of the scheme by thebank and by any othercompany. The otherscheme – believed to bedevised by Barclays – sawinvestment funds trying toreceive tax credits from theTreasury on non-taxableincome. The governmentbrought in legislation onMonday to block future useof the scheme.

Exchequer secretary tothe Treasury David Gauke

said the government wasclear that "businesses mustpay the tax they owe whenthey owe it. We do not taketoday's action lightly, butthe potential tax loss fromthis scheme and the historyof previous abuse in thisarea mean that this is acircumstance where thedecision to change the lawwith full retrospectiveeffect is justified," he said.

Prime Minister DavidCameron's officialspokesman said: "What youhave learned today is thatthe government takes taxavoidance very seriously. Wewill continue to take toughaction on tax avoidancebecause we need to makesure that the tax system isfair for everybody."

A move by the UK’s Treasury to close two loopholes in taxlaws comes as an embarrassment to Barclays Bank after ittried to avoid paying more than £500 million in tax dodgesdespite the bank having signed up to a code of practiceagainst tax avoidance and the fact that it has recentlystressed the importance of “good citizenship”.

Pressure on to scrapNHS reformsLabour have renewedpressure for NHS reformsto be scrapped aftersecuring an urgentCommons grilling of thegovernment over NickClegg's backing for furtherchanges, according to thePress Associationyesterday, Tuesday.

Commons Speaker JohnBercow granted a requestby shadow Health secretaryAndy Burnham (pictured)for an urgent questionabout the latestdevelopment in the drawn-out saga.

Mr Clegg, the DeputyPrime Minister, sought tohead off a revolt within hisLiberal Democrat party byendorsing moves to limitcompetition in the healthservice.

He issued a joint letterwith Baroness Williams, themost prominent Lib Demcritic of the shake-up, asactivists prepared to raiseconcerns at the party'sspring conference nextweek.

Downing Streetindicated that PrimeMinister David Cameronhad been consulted on theletter and was happy tosanction further changes tothe flagship Bill. Therewould be no "significant"amendments however,Number 10 insisted, onlymoves to provide"reassurance and clarity"to coalition colleagues.

The Health and SocialCare Bill has already beensubstantially altered amidstrident opposition frommany health professionals– with significant groupsremaining hostile to theproposals.

Sources close to HealthSecretary Andrew Lansleysaid he was "relaxed" aboutthe changes sought by MrClegg, which he did notbelieve would substantiallyalter the impact of thelegislation.

Labour dismissed theletter as a "panic move" byMr Clegg to save him fromconfrontation withactivists, who last year

forced the government to"pause the legislation" andmake changes.

Mr Burnham said the"cosmetic" amendmentsfell well short of LadyWilliams' earlier demandfor the section of the Billwhich deals withcompetition to be droppedin its entirety. It came asReform, a centre-rightthink-tank, called for thecompetition provisions tobe retained to improve"quality and productivity".

Mr Lansley will respondin person to the urgentquestion, his spokesmansaid, cancelling a speech totown hall leaders andpatient groups in order to

Memo fromMadridMartin DelfínWrites for the English language version of

The LocalVoice

Muriel Pilkington

The PP government was less thantwo months old when the Lefttook to the streets looking for

trouble. Two weeks ago, a protest bystudents in Valencia against the local(PP-run) government’s education cutsended with a scuffle between police andstudents in which a couple of the lattergot a bit bruised. But it gave them anexcuse to turn out in force at thebeginning of last week, targeting a lackof heatin g and money at one particularsecondary school. That protest ended in45 “students” being hauled off by baton-wielding riot police.

However, the protesters forget welive in a country which enjoys afair degree of press freedom and

by the end of the week, the truth startedto emerge. First of all, the heating at theLluis Vives Institute had not beenturned off for lack of money at any timethis winter. In fact, there is currently atotal of €82,000 in the school’s bankaccount which allows it to pays its bills, despite the local government’s cuts. Aneducation department spokesman inValencia told the press that the cuts, infact, don’t affect the students at all, onlythe teachers.

It then turned out that of the 45people detained, only one attendsthe Lluis Vives Institute. The rest

were all too old to be attendingsecondary school – 20 were aged from18 to 23 and the rest were 24 or over, including a 71-year-old man. Only 30 ofthe 300 people in the crowd identifiedby the police were of school age. Thesefigures did not surprise the police at all,who know these professional protestersonly too well. The regional president ofthe Professional Police Syndicate, JoséManuel León, told reporters that “thesepea ceful protests turn violent becauseof the anti-system radicals who stir upthe students, then when the policemove in they push the students into thefirst rows while they fade into thebackground”.

He pointed out that what the pressdid not report about the firstpeaceful protest, when the

police did not wear riot gear, was whatthey had to put up with – insults, kicks, spitting and even biting.

And what the press didn’t givemuch coverage to was the factthat the schools in one Valencian

municipality governed by the SocialistParty haven’t had the heating turned onat all this winter.

By the end of the week, we alsoknew that the personable youngman who acted as spokesman for

the students earlier in the week is anardent fan of Fidel Castro andVenezuela’s Hugo Chavez – notsurprising since he was caught by anews camera proclaiming that “thestreets of Valencia are going to burnwith fire and run with blood”. But whenhe was interviewed on Telesur, AlbertoOrdóñez acted as if butter wouldn’t meltin his mouth. He said he didn’t repenthis words, they were a reaction to policebrutality which was what started off theviolence in the first place. He was veryvague about what he studied and wherebecause “I’m being threatened bygroups on the extreme Right”.

The Socialist Party is desperate totake over the student movementbut perhaps it should think twice

before being tarred with the same brushas its main rival, the Communist-dominated Izquierda Unida (UnitedLeft) which is trickier than a bagful ofmonkeys when it comes to trying to pullthe wool over the public’s eyes.

Ididn’t have room for the picture Iwanted to publish last week because– as usual – I ran on too much. So

here it is this week. Candido Mendez, head of the General Workers Union, sported a €10,000 solid gold Rolex at arecent press conference. He has alsobeen snapped in the past year wearingwatches by Raymond Weil and MauriceLacroix, valued at around €7,000 each.

Most unseemly for a unionleader in a country where morethan five million people are out

of work. Somebody should tell him topull his sleeves down at the nextconference!

A right Royal messHanky panky

In some ways you have to feel sorry forIñaki Urdangarin. He has replacedFrancisco Camps as Spain’s poster boy

for bad behaviour without even trying. This greedy son-in-law is dragging theentire royal family down with him as hefaces public corruption charges for hisalleged dealings at the Nóos Institute –the non-profit entity he and partnerDiego Torres set up to organise regionalsports and tourism and collected a lot ofmoney in doing so. Now it appears thatUrdangarin disobeyed his father-in-law,King Juan Carlos, who in 2006 orderedhim to quit all his private businessdealings and find a more transparent jobthat would not fall under so much publicscrutiny. Urdangarin admitted thisweekend that he went against the king’swishes and continued to work behind thescenes, helping to collect the outstandingmoney owed to Nóos by making a seriesof phone calls and sending a few emailmessages. Off with his head, somemonarchists are crying. Tax inspectors saythat Urdangarin diverted to his ownprivate businesses generous portions ofthe estimated €6.5 million Nóos receivedfrom the regional governments ofBalearics and Valencia between 2002-2006.

So where should the sympathy fall? Itis difficult to get a fair trial in thiscountry – or for that matter,

anywhere else – when the media is onyour back. The circus started two weeksbefore the royal bad boy was set to appearin a Palma de Mallorca court to testifyabout his role at Nóos, when a cameracrew from Telecinco tracked him and hiswife, the Infanta Cristina, at their home inChevy Chase, Maryland – a WashingtonDC suburb where many of the country’smovers and shakers live quietly. Since2009, Urdangarin has had a “respectable”job with Telefónica where he serves as arepresentative for the telecom giant’sprofitable Latin American division. It wasthe king’s wishes that he take his familyand get out of town after the monarch gotwind that there was an investigationbrewing. Not a nice move for someonewho is the main target of a judicialinquiry. But Urdangarin didn’t want toupset his father-in-law any further andtook the advice. But once again hedemonstrated that he may be dangerousextra baggage for the Spanish royals.

In a bizarre incident, a Telecincoreporter approached Urdangarin onthe street as he was walking to meet

his family at a local cinema. Naturally, hetold the journalist he had no commentwhile waving her off as she kept pace withhim. Then suddenly when Urdangarinsaw that the camera crew was on his tail, the lanky former Spanish Olympichandball champion made a mad dashdown the street as if he was running forhis life. This strange image has beenbroadcast and rebroadcast over and over. What is Iñaki running from?, Telecincofacetiously asked their viewers during thepromo for the special programme.Another painful image for the Duke ofPalma.

According to El País’ royal watcherMabel Gález, Urdangarin’shotfooting did not set in well with

Zarzuela royal palace. The Bourbonsperhaps haven’t had so much eye-raisingpublicity since the playboy antics of KingAlfonso XIII’s eldest son, Alfonso deBourbon – the current monarch’s uncle –who was killed in a car crash in the early1940s in Florida. Urdangarin got wordfrom Zarzuela that he must face themusic and quit portraying himself in amanner that is “not befitting of a memberof the royal family”.

Come Saturday, the day of thetestimony, and Urdangarin wasmet by a very unruly crowd. No

doubt the public’s mind is already madeup. Hecklers taunted him with chants of“chorizo, chorizo” (thief, in Spanish),while holding up placards poking fun atthe royals. Some signs showed King JuanCarlos in a Don Corleone gesturesurrounded by the puppet strings of theThe Godfather’s movie poster. As he madethe so-called “walk of shame” – thepassage way leading to the Palma deMallorca courtroom – a nervousUrdangarin was clearly not amused.Facing heat before the judge and back atZarzuela, no one would wish thissituation on their worst enemy.

Employment law reformsThe new reforms, although largely unpopular with workers, will be welcomed by employers.

The generous paymentscheme on dismissal whichSpain had was often amajor obstacle forbusinesses in the currenteconomic climate as theoption of dismissing anemployee in an attempt toreduce costs could be anexpensive one.

The high severancepayments could also havebeen seen as a deterrent tohiring and the aim of thenew reforms, whichinclude the reduction ofthe severance payment, issaid to be to increaseemployment.

As part of the reforms, which came into effect on

13th February 2012, anemployer will now be ableto dismiss an employee bypaying 33 day’s salary foreach year worked insteadof the current 45 days, orjust 20 days if there areprofit losses over a ninemonth period.

In Spain the TradeUnions have a great deal ofpower and control over thecontracts and pay packagesemployers can offerthrough the use ofcollective bargainingagreements. However, under the new changesbusinesses in Spain, insituations where forexample they are facingeconomic hardship, will be

able to withdraw from suchagreements and haveincreased freedom as aresult in relation to matterssuch as working hours, shift work, remuneration, working systems andperformance. Morespecifically, businesses willalso be permitted in suchcircumstances to suspenda worker’s contract orreduce their hours. Thechanges also provide thatabsences of 20% over twomonths, or 25% over fourmonths, can amount to areason for dismissal. On the hiring side,

organisations areincentivised by the newreforms to hire employeesunder 30 and those

unemployed for a longperiod, by the provision ofquite substantial taxbenefits.

Hiring should now bemore attractive alsobecause employers withless than 50 employees cannow employ workers underan indefinite contractwhich allows for a trialperiod of a year.

Additionally of benefit toemployees, employers areobliged to offer training toemployees with more thanone year’s service.

Although the dismissalof an employee may nowbe considered less

expensive and lessproblematic, employerscan face legal action if theydo not follow the correctprocedures or do not fallwithin the circumstancesprovided by the legislation.

For advice onemployment law generallyplease contact JavierFlorido Martín or MariaCorder at De Cotta Law on951 315 161.

Holidays: will my pet be OKwith a stranger?Dogs are creatures that

do not live in the past orindeed in the future, they arepresent living creatures.Present living means they

react to what is happeningnow. They do not sit thinking‘I wonder what Mum iscooking for me tonight.’Likewise they do not think inthe past ‘I wonder whenUncle Jack is coming roundlike he did a few monthsback’Obviously they are

creatures of habit withroutine, sound and smell.Simply put on your make upand pick up your bag andleash, wow what a reaction!

If you are going away and

someone moves into yourhome to look after them andfeed them, again they willreact to the present time andbe quite content. Anyonestaying should take themout for walk a few times aday, always with a leash onhowever much he or she willthink that the dogs knowthem well.

Do not worry aboutleaving your pets if a friendstays in your home but dostress that all gates and doorsmust always be closed.

DUMPING YOUR DOG

A number of people aredumping their cat or dogand just driving off andgoing back to the UK.

How cruel this is? A wellknown “dog trainer” on theCosta del Sol dumped hisdogs in kennels promising tocome back in a week – henever came back. I managedto find one of them a goodhome.

If you are going back tothe UK and cannot afford totake your dog, why notdiscuss this with your localanimal shelter. I have heardthat a few of them have infact assisted people who areshort of money to get theirdog/cat back to the UK.

One had a friend whowas in pet transport, a fewwines later he agreed to takethem!

So before dumping yourdog chat with a rescuecentre, or maybe place anadvert in this paper ‘Anyonegoing back to the UK by carthat could take my pet for asmall fee? ‘

Remember if you dumpyour dog the likely result willbe death by a car accident orstarvation. How can anyoneto this to a former pet? As ananimal lover, it breaks myheart to write like this.

e News Help Desk

We at The News have been asked all mannerof questions for many years and it seemedto us that there was a need for a central

service where you can go as a first point ofcall if something is worrying you. DuncanBurrell has lived in Spain for 30 years andhas experience of dealing with most things.

He has bought and sold houses, ownedbusinesses, brought up two children with all

that entails here with schools, medicalproblems etc., etc. and between us we haveover 45 years of experience dealing with all

manner of problems. The News Help Desk is open on Wednesday,Friday and Saturday every week from 1pmuntil 3pm in The News offices at SierraChica, opposite the La Trocha CommercialCentre, Coin and on Sundays at La Trocha

Market (near the entrance to theescalators) from 10am until mid-day. Bothlocations are on the A355 which is the roadthat runs between Coin and Cartama. If youlive on the coast and can’t make it up here,

give us a call and we can make anappointment to see you down there.

Don’t go to someone who’s going to chargeyou a fortune for something that can so

easily be fixed – The News Help Desk maywell be able to sort it out for you at a farlesser cost. Ours is a service where you cancome for advice on how to deal with anyproblems you may have in connection with

living in Spain, including legalising of houses, businesses, cars, etc. And if there’s

something we can’t help you with, we willknow someone who can, and do it legally too!If you can’t come and see us personally, callDuncan Burrell on 607 590 977 or call ushere at The News on 952 454 491 and letus help you to be able to see a light at the

end of that very dark tunnel at last!

Burglaries upBurglaries are on the rise inAndalucia and it seems thatthe thieves get in and takeeverything – and thatmeans everythingincluding clothes, food, even the taps from the sinkand bath as in the case of afour-bedroomed house inManilva in the past fewdays.

Coin has also beentargeted with over tenburglaries being carried outin one week at thebeginning of Decemberand more recently. In thatparticular area the GuardiaCivil are keeping a close eyeon things but you still needto make sure that all yourlocks and bolts are good

ones and that windows andall doors, gates etc., areclosed and locked. Also, askyour neighbours to keep agood eye out.

Remember there’snothing wrong with askingsomeone strange to thearea what they are doingand, just to be polite, canyou help them! That waythey’ll know that people inare keeping a sharp lookoutand they’ll probably moveon – preferably to anothercountry!

Women’s World Day of PrayerOn Friday 2nd March overthree million peopleworldwide will be prayingand worshipping togetherduring the annual Women’sWorld Day of Prayer.

The service is written by adifferent country each yearand that country thenbecomes the focus of theworld's prayers on the dayitself. This year’s theme is ‘LetJustice Prevail’ and has beenprepared by the Christianwomen of Malaysia. Locally there will be a

service at St Andrew’sChurch, Los Boliches at4.30pm.

Although organised andled by women, this isessentially a day of prayer foreverybody, demonstratingour solidarity with our sistersand brothers in othercountries and all arewelcome to attend.

Further information canbe found on the WWDPwebsite at www.wwdp-natcomm.org.

The symbol of theWomen's World Day ofPrayer was designed in 1982for the service prepared bywomen of Ireland, bothnorth and south, and wasthen adopted as theInternational Logo.

Your outlook on the World nOut & About 17the ewsn

Written by Jean Joss

White villages andancient defensivecastles are dotted

all over Andalucia but theMoorish castle of Zahara dela Sierra is impressive, evento the most experiencedtraveller. Situated betweenRonda and Sevilla andoverlooking the long valleybelow, it was the ideal spotfor a fortress built to repelenemy attacks and becauseof its perfect postion had along and often chequeredhistory.

Neolithic man madehis mark here. Thereare caves dotted

around the area as well asartefacts such as axe headsand pottery which werediscovered locally. TheRomans, too, were activeand it is thought that therewas a Roman settlementnearby since roof tiles, ceramics and marble havealso been unearthed – notsurprising considering theonce thriving city ofAcinipo near Ronda was

relatively close by. (You candrive to Ronda these daysin about half and hour.)The Roman culturecontinued under theVisigoths long after the fallof the empire.

The castle itself isthought to date backto the eight century,

around the year 742,though its first definitemention as a frontierfortress was in 1283 whenSultan Yusef Aben of

Morocco and the Castilianking Alfonso X met todiscuss an alliance. Duringthe 13th Century it was oneof the links in the defensivenetwork of towers andwatchtowers marking theborder of the Muslimkingdom.

During the 15thcentury as theChristians and

Moors fought forsupremacy in Al-AndalusZahara was continuallychanging hands and itspopulation subjected toattacks and massacres. Theexisting tower was rebuiltduring this volatile timeand by the latter part of thecentury the village wasconstantly on a war footing. In 1483 Rodrigo Ponce deLeon conquered Zaharaand the Catholic Kingsawarded him the title ofMarquis de Zahara, as wellas property rights. His coatof arms is still that of thetown today.

Zahara is the lastvillage perched onthe most westerly

massif on the limestonemountains at the foot of theSierra del Jaralin in Cadizprovince. Its nameapparently stems from theArabic, which means a largerock, though popular beliefhas linked it to the orangeblossom (azahar) on thetrees lining its streets. Afterthe Christian conquest itwas called Zahara de losMembrillos after thequinces grown locally.

Today its warlike pasthas been forgottenand it is more

appreciated for the beautyof its setting. The romanticBritish traveller RichardFord, described it as a“Moorish eagle's nest” andyou can walk up to thecastle remains to see foryourself. There are ruins ofthe mediaeval villagearound the Torre delHomenaje and a museumat the base charting itshistory. But to really sharethe flavour of the ancientfortress climb the steps tothe top of the tower andenjoy the spectacular viewsof the surrounding area.

The views todayinclude theimpressive reservoir

filling the valley below thetown. In earlier times ariver flowed through it –once crossed by a Romanbridge – but demand forwater resulted in the riverbeing dammed and aroundten years ago the valley wasflooded to construct a hugelake (it apparently took sixyears to fill completely). Itis a beautiful sightshimmering in thesunshine since the water isso clear – being fed by themountain streams.

The village itself is atypical puebloblanco, with tree-

lined streets, cafes and barsand two churches – SantaMaria de la Meza whichboasts a baroquealtarpiece, and the chapel

of San Juan de Letran. There are also miradors allaround from which to viewthe countryside and takephotographs.

If mountain scenery andviews are your thing(provided you aren't

worried by heights) thenafter visiting Zahara driveback via Grazalema. Thismeans crossing the passcalled Puerto de lasPalomas, an unforgettabledrive up winding hairpinbends which seem to go onforever. I'm not sure wherethe doves were the day wedrove up here but therewere plenty of birds of preycircling the heights. At thetop there is a small car parkand several marked walksso you can breath themountain air beforedescending through morewinding hairpins into therelative peace of Grazalemawhose natural park hassome wonderful walkingand climbing opportunities(one of the gorges ispictured below).

MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR CROSSWORD SUDOKU CULTURE & LEISURE FOOD & DRINKHOROSCOPES

MagazineMOVIE SPOTLIGHT By Amy Thomas

Director McG, the manbehind Terminator:Salvation and Charlie’sAngels – Full Throttle, is notnoted for his delicate touchand subtlety so this romcom crossed with a spythriller comes out of thetraps like a battering ram, ifyou will excuse the mixedmetaphors. FDR (Pine) andTuck (Hardy) are the world’sdeadliest CIA spies –apparently – as well as beingbosom buddies. And havingsuccessfully workedtogether to bring down badguys all around the worldthey end up back at head

office in LA. There our deskbound heroes find time tomull over the meaning oflife, love and that kind ofstuff, and hunky Tuckdecides that he wantsnothing more than to find awoman to love. Luckily forhim perky Lauren(Witherspoon) is caught upin her career and doesn’thave time to find the manfor her, so her sister takesthe matter in hand andplaces Lauren’s details on adating site. Tuck spots herand makes contact. Cue fora romance – well, yes. Butshe accidentally meets FDR,

does not realise the guys arebest friends and decidesthat it would be fun to dateboth men and comparetheir attributes. Before youcan say boy meets girl thetwo best friends areemploying their CIA skillsand hi-tech gadgetryagainst each other. There’s alot of bickering, and somelively sabotaging in the all’sfair in love and war battle towin the hand of the fairmaiden. It’s an enjoyable ifbrainless romp, whichluckily has the skills of apretty handy cast to call onto keep things moving along

at a cracking pace. So whowins the day? Watch themovie and take a big bag ofpopcorn.

Hammer StillHas It

is Means War Ihave to admit that I had my

doubts about the recentrelease of the remake of“The Woman in Black”, notthat the original was thatgood, but my doubts wereregarding Mr. Potter. Havingnot read the book, it is hardfor me to compare versionsand say which is closer to it,however when making acomparison, for story andmost enjoyable movie, I’dhave to say Potter wins ithands down.

Even though the story isthe same, the

productions were quitedifferent – for example, inthe original Arthur’s wife isalive and in the remake hiswife died during childbirth.

Also the town’s peoplewere helpful in the

original, but not in the newone – they couldn’t get rid ofArthur quick enough. I knowthat they seem like smalland petty differences, but Ithink this altered the story ofthe movie.

Another thing thatbugged me about the

original was there wasn’tmuch explanation as to whyand what was happening, and the residual hauntingscene was rather irritating.

The remake wassurprisingly good, the

special effects were neat –not too much, but enough

to give you the willies.Hammer, true to it’s famoushorror genre, managed tokeep the movie spooky witha few jumps thrown in forgood measure, which makesa refreshing change to allthe blood and gore thatmodern horror makers thinkis a prerequisite.

Radcliffe was the biggestsurprise for me. I didn’t

think he’d ever get overbeing Potter, but I waswrong, the boy doesn’t haveto whip out his wand to bememorable. As his charactercarried the film, there wasmuch on Radcliffe’sshoulders, but he handledthe role remarkably well.

For those of you who arenot familiar with the

story, this is what it’s about:Being told by his boss thathe has one last chance toprove that he can be a usefulsolicitor, recently widowedArthur Kipps is ordered topay a visit to a town in thenorth east of England, where the estate of AliceDrablow needs to be sorted.Shortly after arriving to thetown, Kipps starts to hearalmost all residents plead forhim to leave the town atonce, and not to go nearDrablow's old house.

Arthur decides that heshould pay a visit to

Drablow's house, so that hecan at last sort out all of herfinancial details and thenget as far away from thetown as possible!. As Arthurstarts to work through thenight at the isolated house,he takes a look outside awindow, and for a momentsees an image of a ghostly-looking woman dressed inblack.

If you fancy a fright or areinto ghost stories, this film

should be right up youralley.

A Discovery Worth MakingHazy Malaze formed in 2002and this soul power trio, withsinger guitarist Neal Casal, drummer Dan Fadel andbassist Jeff Hill, released acracking debut album in2003. They have released atotal of three albums – HazyMalaze (2003), BlackoutLove (2005) andConnections (2009) andhave toured throughout theUS and Europe. This groupbrings out something new inNeal's voice, a sour tocounter the sweet, a bit morewolf under the sheepskinthan many might haveexpected.

Hazy Malaze sound likewhat might have happenedif the Meters had passed thepeace pipe with Little Feat'sLowell George. Hazy Malazeprovides a rough edgedcounterpoint to thesensitivity of Casal's solowork, revealing new facets ofan artist always on the road

to something new. The firstalbum Hazy Malaze openswith the very Stones-esque“Satisfy the Jones” – it’s amodern classic with somemean guitar work. A bitfurther in you’ll find“Getaway From You”, whichhas a ‘60s sound to it andDan’s drumming remindsyou of Keith Moon.

The group’s original ideawas to be a instrumentalband, but in the end theydecided against it – however, two instrumental tracksmade it on to the debutalbum. And once you hearthis album, you’ll neverbelieve that it was recordedin only seven days.

The second album,Blackout Love, is mypersonal favourite. Thisalbum is more polished thanthe first. The sound isamazing, the second track“Looking Out for You” has tobe one of my favourite songs

of all time, it’s bluesy with araw edge. Casal’s voice is sointense in this song that ifyou were listening to it on aheadset, you’d think he wasright behind you, his voice isquite sexy in this littlenumber. Another naughtynumber is “Thank You InAdvance”, but not all thesongs on here are sexy andsoulful.

The boys knock it in gearwith some good ol’ rock ‘n’roll, with “Rock ‘N’ RollGone” and “DamageTalking”. There is also a bit offunk in “Bust it Down”, and ifyou like Golden Earring’s“Radar Love”, you’ll love“Dirty Summer”. Afteryou’ve rocked out, there afew slower numbers that’llhelp you get your breathback, “Blackout Love” is analbum that should be ineverybody’s collection.

Hazy’s last album,Connections, seems slightly

darker, it’s a bit heavier, butjust as good nonetheless. The opening track “Get Free”is insane and fast with quirkylyrics, it sets the theme forthe rest of the album. Thetitle track “Connections” hasa taste of country to it, but“Josephine” and “On theTarmac” isn’t countryish atall, it’s more rock. There aresome slower songs, but thefinal song “Scavenger” isgreat, with a good oldfashioned guitar solo.

Hazy Malaze is well worthdiscovering, this band willrestore your faith in modernmusic and remind you whatgood rock ‘ n’ roll reallysounds like.

It is the moment to roll up your sleeves and get right down to it; effort is what isrequired, sheer determination and action to get a job done. It is not aboutbrainstorming or being in touch with the right people anymore it is hard work andmuscle that is going to get you ahead now. Put in the man-hours and you willflourish – you are on a countdown to getting some of your dreams to come true,by 10th March you will see the result of your efforts.

You will be really reaching for the dream this week which is having a way ofexpanding your horizons and your sense of all that is possible. There is seriousfortitude brewing within you and will peak mid March so prepare well to dosomething big with the energy that will be bursting forth within you. You are onthe brink of future success and recognition, this is when you'll start to see the hardwork you've done start to really pay off.

This week you could be feeling all out at sea, worrying over things that normallyjust roll off your back. By the weekend whatever you need to know will becomeapparent and you will then recognise what to do. An emotional week in the areaof your home and you could feel that you are at a crossroads. Later in the weeknew acquaintances enter your life and bring fresh opportunities, this is just whatyou need to take your mind off the domestic and family entanglements.

Just when you thought you were there, another door opens which is loaded withsigns of new adventures and upcoming personal challenges. The big differencethis time is that you will have the wealth and resources needed to make the journey. This is more about testing and refining your inner determination. Your career andsocial standing is on a pathway leading to elevation, run with it for greaterprosperity could be just around the corner.

After a period of rest you will find yourself filling up with zest and enthusiasm, you can feel that what you are doing now is on the right track and this feelingis giving you energy. Seeds are germinating; life is showing signs of promiseonce more. This is a great time to go to new places and learn new things, toexplore more of what life has to offer. If the outer appearance of things haslooked misty, the veil is starting to lift, revealing a new dawn.

Relationships are where all the action is and a lot of your energy is directed at re-addressing the balance. Changes are coming and will have a knock-on effect toloved ones; therefore, a lot of groundwork has to be covered, to make sure thatall concerned are comfortable and willing to assist the journey. By next week youremotions heat up and you become very passionate and sensual towards a specialsomeone. Look after your health this week, be kind to yourself.

Take it one step at a time Libra – you may feel like you have been left in the lurch bysomeone and may be slightly overwhelmed as to what to do. Make sure that youcommunicate clearly and let others know what the situation is – you may besurprised at who comes forward to aid you. Once you clear this hurdle your energywill re-emerge allowing you to battle on making bigger strides than ever. Treatyourself to a bit of pampering – you deserve it.

You are so creative right now on all levels. This can be a time when partnershipsare formed and two individuals learn to function as one. However, you may bemore concerned about your overall health and not want to push yourself beyondyour limits. The best thing you can do is slow down and make sure youunderstand what others are saying before rushing to take action. This energy isgreat when making changes and improvements to your home-life livingconditions.

Others are looking to you for leadership and guidance, you are the one who alwaysseems to be able to identify the goal, see the bigger picture and inject a bit ofenthusiasm into anything. The problem is you don’t want to rush in where angelsfear to tread this week; you want to wait but you can’t explain why, it just doesn’tfeel the right time to take up the reins and ride. Perhaps worry and fear are weighingyou down – or maybe the timing isn’t quite right, only you know.

The pace of your life is so fast it is making you dizzy. Making plans to fit everythingin is almost impossible but vital so that you don’t forget or leave something out. Youmay have to start taking a pen and paper around with you to write things down sothat you can remember them. If not you are going to start to lose things and forgetappointments. You will need a sense of humour and as long as you can laugh yourway through this time then at least the journey will seem lighter.

There are people entering your realm from different walks of life that are spicingthings up for you. You have a lot of attention coming your way and at the same timethere is a strong theme at the moment to rely upon yourself and becomeindependent. The financial side of your life is also feeling a bit shaky and this is nothelping but there are ways to increase wealth at your fingertips. Repairingrelationships and restoring them to their former glory is something that you wish tofocus on.

Doing things one at a time is the key to getting things done, this means stoppingwhat you are doing should you find yourself being distracted by others and beingsure to hear not only what they are saying but also what they mean. This can alsomean standing tall when others come to distract you and ask them to come backlater when you're in the middle of something. A big factor in this appears to be notallowing yourself to be taken for granted.

Not funny Cohen ruinsthe night for presenterVictoria Wood once said atan award ceremony thatthe new line of so-calledcomedy was just not funnyanymore and indeed, itseems that “comedians”think that being nasty, spiteful or just downrightuncouth is funny. At the Oscars at the

weekend Sacha BaronCohen (he of the yellowMankini) turned upwearing a military uniformthat he claimed wasdesigned by John Gallianoposing as General Aladeen, the lead character in hisfilm The Dictator. He wasflanked by two female“bodyguards” and wascarrying what appeared tobe an urn that he claimedcontained the ashes of his“friend”, the late North

Korean leader Kim Jong-il.During an interview

with US TV host RyanSeacrest, he told him thathe was pleased to be at theawards ceremony as: "Itgave me the opportunity tobring my dear friend anddoubles tennis partner,Kim Jong-il. It was hisdream to come to theOscars and to be sprinkledover the red carpet andover Halle Berry's chestagain."He then faked falling

over and tipped thecontents of the urn thatindeed looked like ash, allover Seacrest’s immaculateBurberry dinner suit and allover the red carpet. Theshocked presenter toldviewers: “I’m a little dusty.I’m a victim of comedy,”

while the event’s realbodyguards took a ratherdimmer view of the stuntand carted Cohen off.Earlier last week, the

Academy of Motion PictureArts and Sciences warnedthe star of Borat and Brunoagainst staging anypublicity stunts, and it wasinitially reported that hehad been banned. In response, Cohen

posted a spoof video onlineof "General Aladeen"calling the academy'smembers "zionists".Well, Mr Cohen, seems

like it might be time togrow up and become anormal member of society. But I don’t think that’s verylikely – what a patheticidiotic little man he is!

However,he has grown out of hisassociation with DonatellaVersace so we’ll just have towait and see where he goesnext.

The week has been fullof other surprises though.First came the news thatRaf Simons is leaving hisposition as CreativeDirector at Jil Sander, withan emotional farewellduring his final show lastweekend. Then the YvesSaint Laurent stableconfirmed that StefanoPilati will be ending histenure at the brand, withthe possibility of HediSlimane taking his place.

She said current strategiesto reduce waste were notenough and NHS patientsshould be told how muchtheir medicines cost.

She told reporters how aman entered her pharmacylast month and handed hera black bin-bag ofmedicines worth £2,250.She said they wereunusable because she didnot know how they hadbeen stored in the patient’shome so they were sent forincineration.

According to a recent

poll of members of theRoyal PharmaceuticalSociety, 57% thoughtpatients were to blame formedicines’ waste.

Various strategies havebeen proposed to preventwaste, including limitingprescribing to 28 days, andsince 2006, more than 120campaigns have been run, asking people to "onlyorder what you need".

Ms Wang said thisclearly this is not enoughand “it's time to talk aboutthe money”. Most people

have no idea how muchtheir medicines cost andhuman nature is such, shesaid, that when somethingis free, people behave moreirresponsibly.

She said colleagues incountries where peoplehave to pay for medicinesdon't see this sort of wasteand while the debate onprescription chargescontinues, people need tobe made aware of exactlyhow much their medicinescost.

She thought pharmacies

could print some extrawording on medicineslabels, and suggested: "Thisbox of medicine costs theNHS £XX. Please look afterYOUR NHS: don't keepmore than two months'worth of medicines."

Wake upcall aboutmedicinewaste

Many drugsare 'non-vegetarian'

Lin-Nam Wang, community pharmacist and senior contributionseditor at The Pharmaceutical Journal, has said that half of the£300 millions’ worth of medicines wasted each year is avoidable.

People who choose not toeat animal products maybe unaware that commonmedicines could containthem, according toresearchers at theManchester RoyalInfirmary. Many tablets andliquid medicines usegelatin, derived fromanimal bones or skin, which helps to hold pillsand capsules together orthicken liquids. A survey of500 patients has shown thata quarter of patients areunknowingly prescribeddrugs containing gelatin.Drug companies couldadopt an "ingredients" listsimilar to that found onfood packaging, or even userecognised symbols such asthose promoted by theVegetarian Society.

The Earth orbits around theSun once every year before

returning to its start position. Wesay that there are 365 days inone year but this isn’t quite true;the Earth actually takes 365 days5 hours 49 minutes and 12seconds to complete one fullorbit, which is very nearly 365 ¼days.

Think of it this way. Imaginethat you are looking down

onto the Solar System fromabove with the Sun in the centreand the Earth travelling aroundit in an anti-clockwise direction. Now lets place the dial of a clockaround the Earth with your part of theEarth pointing at the 12 o’clockposition directly facing the Sun. TheEarth also spins on its axis in an anti-clockwise direction so as the dayprogresses then your point on Earthwill begin to mark out the numbers ofthe clock from 12 through 9 past 6 and3 and back to 12 again making onewhole day.

Each time the Earth completes onrevolution on its axis it moves a

little in its orbit around the Sun. After365 ¼ days it has made one completeorbit of the Sun and returned toexactly the same point in space that itstarted from and now your part onEarth is not pointing at the 12 o’clockposition it is in fact pointing at the 9o’clock position. The following yearyour part of the Earth has progressedanother quarter turn so is nowpointing to the 6 o’clock position. After3 years all these quarter turns arebeginning to add up and now yourpart of the Earth is pointing to the 3o’clock position. After four years havegone by then by the time the Earthreturns to the exact point in spacewhere it begins each year then yourpart of the Earth has taken an extraone whole day or 366 days to return toits starting point.

To compensate for this discrepancyevery four years we add an extra

day in February that makes that year366 days long and not the usual 365days. You may think ‘well what doesone day matter really in four years?’But those days all add up over timeand after 40 years the calendar wouldbe 10 days out of sync with the seasonsand after 80 years there would be adifference of 20 days.

It was Julius Caesar who invented thefirst really ‘proper’ calendar over2000 years ago and he madeprovisions to allow for leap yearsoccurring every four years. But this toowas slightly wrong as the Earth takesalmost 11 minutes less than 365 ¼days to make one orbit of the Sun. Andso by the year 1582 the Julian Calendarwas also out of sync by about 10 days.So Pope Gregory XIII employed amathematician and astronomer toreorganise the calendar to take intoaccount the missing days. And soThursday 4th October 1582 wasfollowed by Friday 15th October 1582and the Gregorian calendar that westill use today was implemented.

The Gregorian calendar states thatevery four years there would be a

leap year but years that are divisible by100 would only be leap years if theywere also divisible by 400 as well. So,in the last millennium, 1600 and 2000were leap years, but 1700, 1800 and1900 were not. In this millennium,2100, 2200, 2300, 2500, 2600, 2700,2900, and 3000, will not be leap years, but 2400, and 2800 will be.

It has been a tradition ever since the13th century that a woman maypropose marriage to a man onlyduring leap years. Refusal by the manto marry the woman required thatfines be levied against the man;compensation ranged from a kiss to asilk gown, in order to soften the blow.Gentlemen, you have been warned!

What’s a Leap Year?

Jayne Gartell Coin

WEDNESDAY, February 29th 2012

Your outlook on the World nOpinion & Comment 27the ewsn

Ummm..... well I don’t know ifyou realise it or not but, theday your quite brilliantnewspaper next hits thestreets will be February 29th2012. That means that this year is aleap year. One of the four yearcycle. That also means that, according to British tradition, women can propose to theirmen!

My man and I have beentogether for over 25 years andhe has been delaying poppingthe question for just about thesame length of time comingup with all manner of excusesincluding: can’t afford awedding (well, yes we cannow!), we’re OK as we are(errm, well you might be butI’d like just that teensiest bitmore security), the kids wouldthink we’d gone daft (nope, wrong again – I’ve spoken tothem and they’d love to seetheir old mum and dadproperly hitched). All in all, I think it’s about timewe got on with it so, at around2pm on Wednesday I will bepopping the question, formally, in front of a load ofpeople having lunch on the

seafront! I have booked a tableand he thinks it’s just lunchand has no idea that it’s a leapyear so, if all your readers see aweird old bloke (he’s in his 50s)running along the paseoscreaming his head off, you’llbe able to guess that hisanswer was a resounding“NO!”. Please don’t print myname in case he sees TheNews first!!

So to all your readers, pleasekeep fingers, toes andanything else you can think ofcrossed for me!

Editor says: Crikey! Good luck withthat one! I really hope I won’t beseeing him running past me whileI’m out and about.

You must have noticed today’s date Wednesday February 29th.Most Februarys have only 28 days so why has this one got 29?Of course, it’s a leap year but why do we have leap years?

Name supplied by email

I am writing this email inresponse to your article inyour newspaper this week(February 22nd 2012) in theOpinion corner by ValerieCaldwell.I manage the team whocover the Coin area whereMrs Caldwell lives anddecided to change herelectricity supplier to ourcompany(Iberdrola). The whole article is totallyfiction which you can see bythe email I received fromMrs Caldwell.I was notified of her problemand tried to find out whathad gone wrong with herbills not arriving (which Imight add I’m not sureEndesa would have spent somuch time and effort doingas we did,) only to receivethe email below – basicallyadmitting she had receivedher bills as promised buthadn't checked her junkmail, and saying that we hadalso sent a bill on therequired date and it wasn’tour fault as a company thatthe post office took so longto deliver it.

In your article its statesIberdrola employ peoplewho quote “tell porkies” –which translates to yourreaders that my team lie tothe clients, which it totallyuntrue. As far as I’mconcerned, grave damagehas been done to mycompany and my team whoI might add work really hardand are totally honest.I would hope after readingmy email and the email fromMrs Caldwell you will takethe professional action andpublish an apology as thethis article will, I’m sure, provoke an adverse reactionfrom the public which willgreatly effect their earnings.I hope you find this emailserious enough to replyASAP.

The email Jayne Gartell refers toabove from Mrs Caldwell hasbeen sent to us as well and reads:

“Hello Jayne...........I have receivedtwo bills via email – one inEnglish and one in Spanish, bothfrom different people and

apparently companies, unfortunately both went into myJunk mail. Then low and behold yesterday

the original one came in the post– where on earth it’s been to Idont know but the date on it was7th December – heck I get mailfrom the UK in three days!!!! Thiswas obviously not Iberdrola’sfault.Lets hope the next one doesn’t

take so long. Thanks for your efforts.Val xx

Editor says: These letters just goto show how careful one has tobe before complaining aboutcompanies and/or their services.Mrs Caldwell clearly hadn’tchecked her spam box for emailsbefore writing to The News. It isgood that Jayne Gartell and herteam looked into potentialproblems that Mrs Caldwell washaving and that she and herteam took the time and troubleto find out what had actuallyhappened. Well done to themand Iberdrola on this occasion!

Unsurprisingly, the Ccoupe's snout looks ratherlike the new nose on the C-class sedan, althoughthe fascia hasbeen slightlytweaked. TheC coupe'sside profile isdefinitelygoing toprovokereactions;some will sayit'scharacteristicof modernMercedes-Benzes,featuring a strong risingbeltline and a kink at the C-pillar. Others may say itlooks like a Honda Accordcoupe, a comparison theMercedes styling teamwould no doubt be upset tohear.

All C coupes will comestandard with 17-inchwheels, the design of whichwill depend on the trimlevel, and all will featurechrome-tipped dualexhaust tips.

Indoors, the C-classcoupe is much the same asits four-door sibling. Thedash is significantly betterthan the pre-facelift C-class

sedan’s, featuring higher-quality materials and a

more stylishlayout. Buyers of the C250will find their interiorstrimmed with aluminum, while C350 coupe ownersare treated to walnut wood, and can upgrade to snazzymatte-finished ash wood. The C-class coupe iscrammed with standardfeatures, many of which are

expensive options on theC-class sedan. They

include a

panoramic sunroof, sportseats, Bluetooth, a 5.8-inchmultimedia display, LEDdaytime running lights, nine airbags (includingdual front pelvic airbags),and Benz's Attention Assistsystem. The C-class coupealso will include Merc'snewest-generation

COMAND infotainmentinterface, should buyersstump up to buy thenavigation system.

With all of these toysincluded, the C-class

coupes shouldhave basepricessomewhathigher thananequivalentsedan’swhen theygo on sale inSeptember.

Still, given the new C’sfeatures and its handsomelooks, dealers should haveno trouble filling theirorder books, so long ascustomers don't end upleasing two-door Accordsby accident!

What a beautiful spring dayat the Cartama oval it wasfor a game of cricketbetween these two localrivals. Mijas CC won thetoss and elected to bat first, with Dave and Mattopening they quickly putup a decent score and werewell on their way to a 100run partnership beforeMatt was bowled out withthe score on 92 aftermaking a fine half century.Dave soldiered on for a fewmore overs to make his 50but also succumbed to asubdued but consistentbowling attack by CDSCC’soff-spinner Jody whoeventually got his first 5wicket haul and, with thehelp of Azam, Rob and

Craig’s never-in-doubtcatches, went on to take acareer best of 6 wickets for25 runs in his 7 overs. Therest of the bowlers kept ittight and restricted the runrate and it was up to thecaptain Tony to take 2 morewickets and assist in a runout to take the last wicket.Mijas CC all out for 153.

With only 154 needed towin the match CDSCC feltconfident and it showed inthe opening pair with Roband Morly cruising to 45before Morly fell to Roger’space attack on 36 runs aftera flurry of boundaries. Robfell soon afterwards on 25,clean bowled by Matt whoread his premeditated shotand adjusted well, and itwas up to the captain withImti at the other endfreeing his arms andsmashing some reallyspectacular sixes before he

was caught in fine style byKevin on 33. Then the boatbegan to wobble and thenext 3 wickets fell in quicksuccession with Roger andMatt taking 3 wicketsapiece. With doubt in thebatting side’s hearts andhope in the bowling sides’,up to the crease cameAzam. After his inspiringperformance in the field,he steadied the nerves andplayed a very sensibleinnings to eventually makethe winning runs bysending the ball back overthe bowler’s head for 4 with4 overs to spare.

Fine weather, rather than theheavy rain of the previoustwo years, blessed this year’sannual competition. Thosebowlers playing at thebeginning of the week in theearly morning sunshine hadto wrap up against the cold, particularly the chill wind.Without the rain, the resolutebowlers from the Costa delSol bowls clubs wrapped upand concentrated on playingtheir matches to theexpected high standard.

The Mixed Triples “Plate”final, played on a warmerSaturday morning, was anexcellent display of teambowling that needed an extraend for the Lauro team ofTrevor and Pam Burgin withTerry Morgan, to winnineteen-eighteen over theMijas team of Terry andMaureen Barrett with BrianLancaster. The warm Saturday

afternoon finals attracted agood number of spectatorswho enjoyed the display oftop-class bowling. The Pairs“Plate” saw the Mijas team,Terry and Maureen Barretttrail by 19 to 10 shots after 13ends to eventually lose 21-19to the Benalmadena team ofGreg Ellwood and MarionAllen.

The favourites for thePairs Title, Brian Todd andMary Detheridge fell behind

to start with but were 4 infront by the eighth end and it

took Bill Gregory and NormaEwen 3 ends to catch up,only to fall behind again by 5shots on the fourteenth end.On 17 shots, Brian and Maryfailed to score again and 8shots over the last 4 endsgave a surprising victory toBill and Norma by 20-17.

After the twelfth end ofthe Triples Final, thedefending Champions fromSanta Maria Garry Aldridge,Margaret and Gordon Kainhad a ten shot lead. TheLauro team of Claire Dye,Tony Barnes and skipped byNorman Holmes, thenbegan the fight-back but justran out of ends, having wonthe last four of the matchonly to lose by two shots withthe score 19-17.

Spanish climber,73,has sights set on world's top peaksAge has never been anobstacle for Carlos Soria, aSpanish mountain climber. When he turned 11, he leftschool to become abookbinder, then switched afew years later to tapestry ina workshop owned by hisuncle. Now 73 and retired, heis on course to become theoldest man to ascend the 14mountains in the world ofmore than 8,000 metres(26,250 feet) having alreadyreached the summit of 10.

In early March, he isleaving his village ofMoralzarzal, 50 kilometresoutside Madrid, for Nepal, where he will climb in theAnnapurna section of the

Himalayas. If he can stick tohis schedule, Soria willcomplete the 14-mountaincircuit next spring. He has, however, said his goal hadnever been to set records.Instead, he wants to helprewrite the guidelines forwhat older people shouldaim for.

Five goal Malaga crushZaragoza

After another weekend ofaway day blues in Bilbao lastweekend, Malaga came backto fortress Rosaleda to takeon bottom of La LigaZaragoza.

Malaga were soon on topwith Seba having the bestearly chance with Robertosaving for Zaragoza, andalthough the visitors lookedlively going forward it wasstill a surprise when theywent in front, Lafitta's crosswas swept in by ex- Malagaplayer Aranda on 23minutes. Roberto saved wellagain from Seba but justbefore the half time whistleMalaga made the important

breakthrough, an Isco crosswas met by the everdangerous Seba whoheaded home from closerange.

The second half beganwith Malaga now in fullcontrol of the game andlooking to add to their goaltally. Isco on the rightcrossed hard and low for theunfortunate Da Silva todeflect the ball into his own

net on 67minutes. Tenminutes later a Joaquin crosswas brilliantly headed homeat the far post byDemechelis, Isco then got onthe score sheet two minuteslater slotting home andRondon rounded off the routwith two minutes left on theclock. This result takes Malaga

back into a European spot.

Wales certainly like to leavetheir fans waiting forvictory, three weeks ago alast-gasp Leigh Halfpennypenalty secured victoryover Ireland in Dublin andon Saturday, withTwickenham urgingEngland forward at 12-12with just five minutes to go,replacement centre ScottWilliams ripped the ballfrom Courtney Lawes onthe halfway line, kickedahead and was blessed withthe most favourable ofbounces, and held on to theball to score the only try ofthe match and seal a 19-12win.Wales have Italy at home

next and, if they win thatone, as they should, willface France in a potentialchampionship and possiblygrand slam decider on thefinal day of thechampionship on March17th.Saturday's victory was

only their second in 14attempts at Twickenhamover a period of 22 years –albeit against aninexperienced Englandteam who showedencouraging signs ofprogress – and it was amassively important one.Wales dominated in the

early stages but could notturn it into points andfound themselves trailingmidway through thesecond half. England's

defence, which had alreadyshown itscopingcapabilitiesin the winsoverScotland andItaly, keptthem at bay.Despite thedefeat,England cantake a lot ofpositives fromthe game, whichfeaturedseven

players making their firststart at Twickenham. The

return of Manu Tuilagi forthe first time since theWorld Cup added someattacking force to thebackline, where 20-year-old Owen Farrell, in hisfirst start at flyhalf,

looked veryassured.

Andthat last

gasp try forEngland! The

chances that TobyFlood could have convertedit anyway is open todiscussion, it was on hisleast favoured side. Betternot to dwell on it and lookforward to their next gameaway to France.

England claimed a dramatic five-run win over Pakistan in the third Twenty20international to take the series 2-1.On a slow Abu Dhabi pitch, the tourists wereindebted to Kevin Pietersen, as they struggled with Saeed Ajmal's magical display, which picked up 4-23. Pietersen made an unbeaten 62 in their 129-6 - and wasthen supported by a superb display by England's bowlers. With Pakistan needingsix from the final ball, Jade Dernbach bowled Misbah-ul-Haq to seal the series.win.
