The trial of Andoni Otegi;former ETA military wingleader Francisco Javier"Txapote" García Gaztelu(pictured), Juan CarlosBesance and Oscar Zelarain, resumed on Friday withtestimony from the widow ofthe man they are accused ofmurdering – councillor JoséJavier Múgica – in Leitza,Navarre province in 2001.Adoracion Zubeldia told thethree-judge panel in a tearfulvoice how her husband died:"The truck was burning andso was my husband." Shealso described the numerousthreats Múgica had received, including the targets paintedon the walls near their homeand a string of robberies. Asshe was being led away by a

court bailiff, she asked him ifshe could “look at theseboys”. She then stared longand hard at them beforeJudge Carmen Paloma askedher to return to her seat.Witnesses said the four menwere unable to hold her gaze. After Judge Angela Morillo

withdrew from the trial,Speaker José Bono toldreporters: “She only saidwhat the majority ofSpaniards were thinking”.

It was the first ETA trial tobe held since the groupannounced a “definitive

cessation of violence” onOctober 20th. Thegovernment has said that theceasefire would not halt thetrials of ETA defendants incustody nor the arrests of theterrorist group's memberswho are still being sought bylaw enforcement.

This Friday is Remembranceday and for the first timesince its inception, all the 11sline up so it will be on theeleventh hour of theeleventh day of the eleventhmonth and (for the firsttime), the eleventh year. Many venues haveremembrance servicesevery year, some withbuglers playing theevocative last Postbeautifully. On page 17 youcan find a feature onRemembrance day with theFlanders Field poem.

I watched Sky news thismorning and was absolutelyflabbergasted (though quitewhy that should be in thisday and age rather beatsme!) to hear that FIFA, thefootball governing body, hastold football players in theuK that they are not allowedto wear Remembrance daypoppies. Of course, playingany sport with a paperpoppy with a pin in it wouldbe daft, let alone dangerous, but these were transfers onthe actual shirts themselves.FIFA have declared them a“political statement” andtherefor illegal under FIFArules. I think the answer toFIFA on that score has to bea) they are not a politicalstatement. They are sayingthat we are rememberingthose that gave up therelives for us, b) they are beingworn on British soil so,unless it is detrimental to thegame of football, it’s none ofyour business, and c) get alife FIFA and don’t be sostupid!

I am pleased to report thatthe turnout for the seminaron what to do if someonedies last Friday in coin wasphenominal and I hope thatit helped the people thereget more of anunderstanding of thesystems here in Spain. I willrun a few editorial piecesover the next few weeks, probably on the communitynews pages, subject tospace, so that those of youwho couldn’t come lastFriday will have a better idea.

The former Interiorminister and deputy PMwas handicapped by therecent bleak news on theeconomic front. Theunemployment rate, atnearly 22%, is more thantwice the European Unionaverage and there are signsthat the country is headingback to recession.Rubalcaba is alsohandicapped by being soclosely associated withPrime Minister José Luis

Rodriguez Zapatero, whohas governed Spainthrough its worsteconomic crisis indecades. On the otherhand, Rajoy was cushionedby polls which haveconsistently given him agrowing lead in theNovember 20th generalelection. If they prove true, the Partido Popular willhave its biggest electionwin since it was founded in1989, while the Socialist

Party will suffer its worstdefeat since the transitionto democracy after theFranco dictatorship.

Spain's two leadingcontenders for primeminister in theforthcoming generalelections have held theironly live television debate.Rubalcaba used the debateto accuse Rajoy of havingsecret plans for massivecuts and privatisation thathe was not declaring to the

electorate. He said: "If youtell people the plans youhave in your head, noteven your own partymembers will vote foryou." But Rajoy, who hasmade it this far with onlybroad ideas and thepromise of change, onlyhas to keep votes ratherthan try and win any more.He said: "The key questionin this election is whetherwe will continue with thesame politics, or manage

things in a different way. Ibelieve Spain needschange – and needs iturgently."

Analysts say theelectoral success of theparty they both representin last month's generalelection is a sign of thewaning influence of the

Church. The party, thePalikot Movement, hastaken a strong anti-clericalstance, criticizing RomanCatholic priests who getinvolved in politics.

It surprised manyobservers by winning 10%of the vote in the generalelection, making it the third

largest political grouping inthe Polish parliament.Palikot campaigned for thelegalisation of abortion, gaymarriage and marijuana.

Many people haveargued that its successshows the Roman Catholichierarchy is out of touchwith Polish youth.

The vote was tight – 36votes in favour, 32 against –with the governmentrelying on the support ofthe Greens to get the billpassed. Opposition partieshave argued that the taxwould cause job losses andraise the cost of living, andthey have promised torepeal the legislation ifthey win the next election, due in 2013. Prime

Minister Julia Gillard told anews conference: "Todaywe have made history. After all those years ofdebate and division, ournation has got the jobdone."

The government has setthe initial price per tonneof carbon at A$23 ($23.80),much higher than othersimilar schemes such as

the one in the EU, wherethe price is between $8.70and $12.60 a tonne. Thecountry's mining firms, airlines, steel makers andenergy firms will be amongthose expected to behardest hit by the tax.Domestic fuel bills areexpected to rise ascompanies pass on thecosts to consumers. Butthe government hopes that

the legislation will forceinnovation in renewableenergy supplies, and freeAustralia from its relianceon fossil fuels.

The country accountsfor 1.5% of the world'semissions, but it is thedeveloped world's highestemitter per head ofpopulation thanks to itsrelatively small population.

After years of political wrangling, Australia's Senate has approved the CleanEnergy Act which will force the country's 500 worst-polluting companies to paya tax on their carbon emissions from July 1st next year.

Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov (pictured) warned Israel onTuesday that military action against Iran would be a "veryserious mistake fraught with unpredictable consequences". He said diplomacy, notmissile strikes, was the onlyway to solve the Iraniannuclear problem. He wasresponding to commentsby Israeli President ShimonPeres that an attack on Iranwas becoming more likely.

The UN's InternationalAtomic Energy Agency(IAEA) is expected to saythis week that Iran issecretly developing anuclear arms capability.

Diplomats have said itsreport will producecompelling evidence thatIran will find hard todispute. This will includeintelligence that Iran madecomputer models of anuclear warhead, as well assatellite images of what theIAEA believes is a large steelcontainer used for high-explosives tests related tonuclear arms. Iran hasalways insisted that itsnuclear programme is

exclusively to generatepower for civilian purposes.Iranian Foreign Minister AliAkbar Salehi has said thealleged evidence is afabrication and part of amulti-pronged US smearcampaign against hiscountry. How many have been let in?News of a border blunderhas been emergingfollowing the UK’s BorderForce deciding that theywould relax the rules onbiometric tests on thoseentering the country. Headof the department BrodieClark and two other officershave been suspended untilfurther enquiries into theaffair have been made.

Home Secretary TheresaMay admitted in astatement that in light oftheir actions there is noway of knowing how manyillegal immigrants andsuspected terrorists haveentered the countrybecause checks had notbeen made against theHome Office database thatwould have highlightedthem as they went throughpassport control – therebypreventing them fromentering the UK.

Ms May said that theagency had been told to“relax” checks made on

European citizens in a bidto make queues shorter butthere had been no directiveto include those migrantsfrom other countries andthat the Border Force haddecided to do sothemselves.

One traveller describedthe actions as “disgraceful”and “putting us all indanger”. He added that, asa frequent traveller, thequeues at passport controlare often “horrendous” dueto only one or two officersbeing on duty, when theremay be 20 stations thatthey could work out of. Hesaid the answer was not torelax the rules but take onmore Border Forcepersonnel to open morechannels at airports andother ports of entry –thereby lessening thequeues that way. He endedby saying: “But they don’twant to spend the money,do they?”

7 killed, morethan 50 injuredA huge pile-up on the M5near Taunton in the WestCountry left seven peopledead and more than 50injured on Friday night.

It was first thought thatfog had caused the accidentbut after several witnesseswho managed to escape thecarnage came forward, itwould seem that smokedrifting across thecarriageway meant thatdrivers found themselvessuddenly hitting a “blackwall” that they could not seethrough.

The smoke appears tohave come from a fireworksdisplay that Taunton RugbyClub was holding ingrounds abutting themotorway.

Avon and SomersetAssistant Chief Constable,Anthony Bangham said thattheir main line of enquirywill now be towards theclub, what permissions theyhad asked for and obtainedfor the display and whathealth and safety measuresthey had adhered to. Roca admits taking moneyOn the 104th day of the Malaya corruption case being heard inMalaga, Marbella's former urban planning adviser, Juan AntonioRoca, finally admitted on Monday that he had received sums ofmoney amounting to €33.3 million from local businessmen. He also admitted payingsome €3.3 million out of hisown pocket to Marbellacouncillors after a vote ofconfidence which led to theousting of then mayorJulian Muñoz in 2003.

However, Roca carefullyavoided linking thepayments to the concessionof building licences orillegal administrativeactions. He said he had

received fees of €3.5 millionfrom each of threebusinessmen for advisingthem on the purchase ofplots in Marbella and theirsubsequent development.

As regards the other 16businessman involved,Roca claimed his dealingswith them were part of his“private business” whichhad nothing to do with theTown Council. He said the

payments to the councillorswere “bonuses” to keepthem faithful to formerMayor Jesus Gil's plans forMarbella. Both Roca'sdefence team and theprosecution affirmed thatRoca's unexpecteddeclarations “did not formpart of any agreementbetween the two parties”but resulted from monthsof “reflection” on Roca'spart.

Adoracion Zubeldia will probably godown in Basque and Spanish folkloreas “the widow” – for having

courageously stared down her husband’sfour ETA murderers in court last Friday. Intrials of ETA assassins, witnesses usually optto give testimony facing the judge and witha screen between them and the accused, who normally sit just a few feet behindthem. Sometimes the more unruly ones arekept in glassed-in cages at the back of thecourtroom. The widow of Navarracouncillor Jose Javier Mugica opted for thescreen last Wednesday when she made herfirst appearance in court but on Friday, shedecided not to use it. After telling JudgeCarmen Paloma Gonzalez in a broken tear-laden voice “the truck was burning and sowas my husband”, she stood to be led awayby one of the courtroom ushers, buthesitated and apparently asked him to lether look at her husband's murderers. Shethen turned round and stared long andhard at the men, especially “Txapote”, afrequent visitor to the courts. The judgequickly intervened and instructed thewidow to return to her seat. I think shefeared the widow would go up to the menand slap them hard in the face. If she had,the whole of Spain would have stood upand cheered. Witnesses said afterwards themen were unable to hold her stare.

The trial had been suspended onWednesday after the widow’s firstappearance on the stand, when the

then presiding judge Angela Trujillo turnedto one of the other judges, saying “poorwoman, and on top of everything else thebastards are laughing”. Judge Trujillo stooddown, and when the trial resumed onFriday, one of the accused, Andoni Otegitold the court: “No-one was laughing at thewidow. In fact we respect her suffering.” Ifthey’d respected her a bit more back in2001, they might not have put the bombunder her husband’s truck. As for respectingher suffering, what an obscene thing to say, seeing as how they were the cause of hersuffering.

As for Txapote, aka Francisco JavierGarcía Gaztelu, for once he stoppedsneering and posturing, acting the

brave big ETA military leader. One of hismore notorious murders was that of PPcouncillor Miguel Ángel Blanco in Ermua inJuly 1997. Txapote and his girlfriend, IrantzuGallastegui, alias Amaia, kidnapped Blancoand held him for 48 hours, demanding thatthe Aznar government relocate ETAprisoners in jails in the Basque Country. When the government didn’t give in,

Txapote made Blanco kneel down and shothim in the back of the head. That murdershocked the country and, for the first time, thousands of people took to the streetscondemning ETA and demanding an endto the group. Until then, most people werescared to express their feelings about ETA inpublic in case they too became a target.

After the widow sat down, the cameramanaged to zoom in briefly onTxapote’s face. He looked very

pensive, for once, and I thought – could heactually be beginning to realise that mostpeople think he’s a piece of you-know-what? He might also be realising that evenif ETA does disband, he probably won't getout of jail any time soon. That brief glimpseof a cowed terrorist went a long way tomaking up for all the disgusting courtroomantics we’ve had to put up with from him –and Amaia – in the past.

The downside

Txapote and Amaia, who has areputation for being one of thecrueller etarras (ETA members),

could be described as the Bonnie and Clydeof terrorism – “pretty looking people but letme tell you people they’re the devil’schildren”, as the song says. Sheaccompanied him for many of the 55murders he’s either carried out himself orordered and they’re still together – in jail. They’re married now and have twochildren. As a married couple, they’reallowed seven 40-minute meetings everymonth – four with glass between them, once for an “intimate” meeting, and twicewith their families.

Txapote is already serving severalsentences averaging 60 to 80 yearsapiece and on Monday, the court

handed him another 105 years in jail. Hewas also ordered to pay compensation of€500,000 to the widow and the family of herhusband's bodyguard, Jorge Diez, who diedwith him. Unfortunately, his prisonsentences are not consecutive and he’llprobably get out after serving only 30 years.

Yawning confrontationWorth waiting for

Your outlook on the World nPolitical Update 13the ewsn

There were no surprises or chillingmoments during Monday night’sdebate between Alfredo Pérez

Rubalcaba and Mariano Rajoy. In fact, withthe exception of an unexpected proposal byRubalcaba to ask for a two-year moratoriumon Spain’s deficit-reduction commitment, the dull face-to-face gave us no new detailsabout how either of the two candidates forprime minister intend to reduceunemployment and stimulate the country’seconomy. Rajoy was combative when he waspressed about the ambiguities in the PopularParty (PP) platform. Even though he hadsome bright moments, Rubalcaba, on theother hand, appeared tired. For most of thetwo hour-telecast, the Socialist candidatefocused on telling viewers what Rajoyintends to do, if he wins the November 20thelection, while the PP leader remindedvoters about what Rubalcaba and PrimeMinister José Luis Rodríguez had donewrong over the past eight years in office.

This will be the only debate, unfortunately, we will see during thisrace. Although face-to-face

confrontations between prime ministerialcandidates are still novel in Spain, twodebates have been the norm in the pastbefore voters went to the polls. This time, thePP, confident that it has clinched the race, refused the Socialists’ request for a secondround. According to all the polls, theopposition is headed for a sweeping victory. The only chance that Rubalcaba had was towarn voters about Rajoy’s secret plans tomake drastic cuts, including in Spain’streasured health system, education andpublic sector jobs.

The 200-page-plus PP manifesto is filledwith vague pledges that lack support, and Rubalcaba was adamant

throughout the head-to-head to pin downthe PP candidate over these proposals. "Youappear not to be concerned about fundingthe public health system," Rubalcaba said atone point, after explaining that the Socialistsintend to hike taxes on alcohol and tobaccoto help shore-up the financially burdenedhealth sector. He also accused the regionsgoverned by the PP of allowing privatehospitals to “release” patients with chronicillnesses so that they can be absorbed by thepublicly financed health system at costsavings to the privately run clinics. Rajoyappeared not to know what Rubalcaba wastalking about.

The PP candidate did pledge that hewould not cut pensions, whilebemoaning that the Socialists have

been the only party in the history of Spain tomake such cuts, amounting to only €1.4billion in savings. Rajoy also promised not togive any public money to banks or cutsubsidies to the unemployed. Rubalcaba, onhis part, called for a delay in meeting aEuropean Union commitment to bringdown Spain’s deficit to the 3-per cent ceilinguntil 2015 in order to free up money forsocial spending and help the jobless.

There was no shortage of insults. Rajoyon more than one occasion calledRubalcaba “a liar” – “knowing you, that

doesn’t surprise me” – while the Socialistcandidate tried to keep his cool. Rubalcabaseemed better prepared than Rajoy, whoread from his “cheat sheet” notes on morethan 100 occasions, according to journalistswho kept count. At one point, the Socialistcontender pulled an ace from his sleevewhen he put Rajoy on the spot bydemanding to know what he intends to doabout the 2005 gay marriage law. He askedhis PP opponent to withdraw the appeal hisparty filed with the Constitutional Courtwhich, after more than five years, is stillstudying the petition. Rajoy awkwardlyavoided answering, and instead read off a listof pledges from his notes. "I knew that itwasn't in your prompt cards," Rubalcabaretorted. Much later, Rajoy reminded viewersthat from the start he supported Zapatero’sdecision to legalise domestic partnerships,as Britain and Germany has done, but neversided with the concept of homosexualmarriage. He said he would allow theConstitutional Court to decide the issue.

According to the polls, Rajoy won thisyawning debate. The Metroscopiapoll for El País put Rajoy five points

ahead of Rubalcaba while La Sexta televisionnetwork gave him a 8.7 lead. El Mundo, atraditional PP backer, gave Rajoy a landslidewith 51 per cent over 44 per cent forRubalcaba. But as many politicians say, thereal poll is the election itself. Unfortunately, this time around we won’t get a good gaugeof where Spaniards stand. Many voters – inboth the PP and Socialists camps – intend tostay home, believing that their voice won’tcount because Rajoy has the election in thebag. Those favoured to make strong gains arethe small parties, such as Rosa Diez’s UPyDparty and the United Left (IU) coalition, which has a strong support from famousartists, actors, writers and intellectuals – aonce strong base for Zapatero but who havenow decided to veer further left followingtheir disenchantment with the currentSocialist Party.

Confusing words - Mean

The question arose in class recently as to how you say "mean" in Spanish.Of course, it all depends which meaning of mean you mean.

The original question I was asked was "What does orgulloso mean?Which in Spanish would be ¿Qué significa orgulloso? To which one might replyOrgulloso significa proud - Orgulloso means proud.

Equally one could say ¿Cómo se dice orgulloso en inglés?How do you say orgulloso in English? And the reply would then be Orgulloso se dice proudwhich translates loosely as orgulloso means proud.

If you want to ask someone "What do you mean? it is best to use ¿Qué quieres decir? What do you mean by that? - ¿Qué quieres decir con eso?I didn't mean to do it would be Lo hice sin querer (Literally, I did it without wanting to)He/She didn't mean to do it - Lo hizo sin querer To stress that you mean what you are saying use - Lo digo en serio (I mean it)

If someone is mean as in stingy or penny-pinchingthey are tacaño if male and tacaña if female. If someone is mean as in mean-spirited or plain nasty we usemalo/mala.

And if you want to say that someone means well - Tiene buenas intenciones.

Hasta la próxima - Until next time. Valerie

As I mentioned in myprevious article on thissubject, at presentinheritance tax allowancesin Spain only apply whenboth the deceased and thebeneficiaries are officiallyresident in Spain. It is thenthe tax rules of thatparticular region whichapply. If either thedeceased or the beneficiaryis non resident then theState inheritance tax rulesapply. This includes caseswhere Spanish residentsreceive an inheritance fromoutside of Spain.

There is a vast differencebetween the stateinheritance tax rules andthe regional allowances.Several regions includingMadrid, the Canary Islands, the Balearics, Valencia andMurcia have virtually noinheritance tax betweenspouses or betweenparents and children.Others, principally thosewith socialistadministrations, have lessgenerous allowances –nevertheless withprofessional advice thereductions can be utilisedso as to significantly loweror eliminate theinheritance tax burden. Forexample Andalucia allows agift to a spouse, child orparent of up to €175,000tax free. This is an all ornothing allowance not a nilrate band so a gift of

€176,000 would be taxableon the full amount.

As previously stated, these allowances onlyapply where the deceasedand beneficiaries areresidents. If not, the muchless generous state rulesapply which simply allow adeduction of just under€16,000 from the gift for taxpurposes for spouse, children and parents of thedeceased. This can meanthat non residentbeneficiaries pay manythousands of euros moretax than they would if theywere residents.

However help may be onits way from the EuropeanCommission. In Brusselson 27th October 2011, TheEuropean Commission hasdecided to refer Spain tothe EU's Court of Justice fordiscriminatory rules oninheritance and gift taxrequiring non-residents topay higher taxes thanresidents.

The Commission hadalready formally requestedSpain on 5th May 2010 andadditionally on 17thFebruary 2011 to takeaction to ensurecompliance with the EUrules in regard toinheritance and gift taxprovisions. However, noamendments have beenmade to Spanish legislation

on the matter.

The Commissionconsiders that thisdiscriminatory taxtreatment constitutes anobstacle to the freemovement of people andcapital, fundamentalprinciples of the EU'sSingle Market, and is inbreach of the Treaty on theFunctioning of theEuropean Union (Articles45 and 63 respectively).

Litigation in theEuropean Courts isnotoriously slow however,if and when the inheritancelaws are changed it wouldbe well worth everyonewith a property in Spain toconsult their lawyer oraccountant to see whetherchanges should be made totheir wills to reduce oreliminate inheritance tax.Watch this space !!

REMEMBRANCE SERVICES THIS WEEKEND

WEDNESDAY, November 9th2011

Your outlook on the World nOut & About 17the ewsn

This year Remembrance Daywill start at 11am of the 11thday of the 11th month of the11th year for the first time: 11,11/11/11 – so buy your poppyand wear it with pride.

“We have been in the mostbitter of fights. For 17 days and17 nights none of us have hadour clothes off, nor our bootseven, except occasionally. In allthat time while I was awake, gunfire and rifle fire neverceased for sixty seconds… andbehind it all was the constantbackground of the sights of thedead, the wounded, themaimed and a terrible anxietylest the line should give way.”This extract was written byJohn McCrae, April, 1915.

“Who was John McCrae?”

John McCrae (picturedright) was a Canadian, born inOntario in 1871, who qualifiedin medicine at Toronto in 1898.On the outbreak of the First

World War, he enlisted withinthe first few weeks and wassent overseas in September1914, again with the CanadianField Artillery. On May 2nd, 1915 during

the second battle of Ypres andwhilst stationed at Essex Farm,Flanders, Belgium, JohnMcCrae’s close friend andformer student Alexis Helmerwas killed by a German shell. That evening, in the absenceof a Chaplain, John McCraerecited from memory a fewpassages from the Church ofEngland’s “Order of the Burialof the Dead”. For securityreasons Helmer’s burial inEssex Farm Cemetery wasperformed in completedarkness. The next day, May 3rd 1915,

Sergeant-Major Cyril Allinsonwas delivering mail. McCraewas sitting at the back of anambulance parked near thedressing station beside theYser Canal, just a few hundredyards north of Ypres, Belgium.

As John McCrae waswriting his In Flanders Fieldspoem, Allinson silentlywatched and later recalled,“His face was very tired butcalm as he wrote. He lookedaround from time to time, hiseyes straying to Helmer'sgrave."Within moments, John

McCrae had completed thepoem and when he was done, without a word, McCrae tookhis mail and handed the poemto Allinson.Allinson was deeply

moved:“The (Flanders Fields)

poem was an exactdescription of the scene infront of us both. He used theword blow in that line becausethe poppies actually werebeing blown that morning bya gentle east wind. It neveroccurred to me at that timethat it would ever bepublished. It seemed to mejust an exact description of thescene."

Helmer's grave cannot befound in the Cemetery; it waslost later in the War, and he iscommemorated on the MeninGate.

Seeing the poppies blowaround the graves led to thebest known image of thispoem. "In Flanders Fields"was published for the first timein Punch in December thatyear, and has since come toencapsulate the sacrifice ofthose who fought. JohnMcCrae was a lieutenantColonel in the First World War.

No doubt, once you’ve readthem below, you will recognisethe words.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppiesblowBetween the crosses, row onrow,That mark our place: and in theskyThe larks still bravely singing flyScarce heard amid the gunsbelow. We are the dead: Short daysago,We lived, felt dawn, saw sunsetglow,Loved and were loved: andnow we lieIn Flanders fields!Take up our quarrel with thefoeTo you, from failing hands, wethrowThe torch: be yours to hold ithighIf ye break faith with us whodie,We shall not sleep, thoughpoppies growIn Flanders fields.

Why do poppies grow in Flanders Fields?

Every spring during thefour long years of WWI,soldiers witnessed the brilliantred poppies blooming on thenewly dug graves and on theshelled battlegroundssurrounding the fields of

Flanders in Belgium.Poppy seeds will lie

dormant for years until the soilaround them is disturbed. Thebattles in Flanders created theideal conditions for poppyseeds to germinate, take rootand bloom everywhere ingreat numbers.

Each year onRemembrance Day and atmany memorial servicesaround the globe, poppies aretraditionally worn and the InFlanders Fields poem isrecited in honour of our fallencomrades. Remembrance Daypoppies owe their origin toJohn McCrae’s poem.

The money generated fromthe sale of the poppies goestoward the rehabilitation ofBritish service personnel whohave been injured in currentconflicts, and to support thefamilies of those who have lostloved ones during the variousconflicts. So dig deep in yourpockets, handbags, down thesides of the sofa cushions andgive whatever you can – don’tfeel embarrassed if you thinkyour little bit isn’t enough, it is!Every little bit given adds up toa bigger bit that can make areal difference to people’s lives. After all, it is they who arekeeping us safe and we shouldnever forget that.

Most will also know thepoem “For the Fallen” and thetwo poems sometimes getmixed up in people’s minds.Laurence Binyon (1869-1943,pictured below right), the poetand art critic, was born inLancaster in 1869. He workedat the British Museum beforegoing to war, having studied atTrinity College, Oxford wherehe won the Newdigate poetryprize. Whilst on the staff of theBritish Museum he developedan expertise in Chinese andJapanese art. Aside from hisbest known poem For TheFallen (1914)– most notablythe fourth stanza whichadorns numerous warmemorials – Binyonpublished work on Botticelliand Blake among others. Hereturned to the BritishMuseum following the war.His Collected Poems waspublished in 1931.

For The Fallen

With proud thanksgiving, amother for her children, England mourns for her dead

across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill;Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortalspheres, There is music in the midst ofdesolation And a glory that shines uponour tears.

They went with songs to thebattle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the endagainst odds uncounted; They fell with their faces to thefoe.

They shall grow not old, as wethat are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, northe years contemn. At the going down of the sunand in the morning We will remember them.

They mingle not with theirlaughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiartables of home; They have no lot in our labourof the day-time; They sleep beyond England'sfoam.

But where our desires are andour hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that ishidden from sight, To the innermost heart of theirown land they are known As the stars are known to theNight;

As the stars that shall be brightwhen we are dust, Moving in marches upon theheavenly plain; As the stars that are starry inthe time of our darkness, To the end, to the end, theyremain.

We will remember themABOUTKym Wickham

MagazineMOVIE SPOTLIGHT By Amy Thomas

Put this down as a must-see for the family – it maybe a bit early to startthinking about Christmasbut this is a definite festivecracker to watch out for.Reigning Santa (JimBroadbent) is about tostep down and hand overthe job to his joyless sonSteven (Hugh Laurie).

Now, it seems thatSanta's worldwide giftdelivery operation is a bitmore sophisticated thanwe have been led tobelieve. Apparently thereis an ultra high-tech

operation hidden beneaththe North Pole ... but we allknow that technology canlet us down. So when onelittle girl is missed out andSteven doesn't seem tocare too much, it's up toSanta's bumbling, kind-hearted younger sonArthur (James McAvoy) tostep in to save the day andpreserve the youngster'sChristmas dreams.

And there's only onesure-fire way to do it – bydusting off the old sleigh, harnessing the reindeerand delivering the gifts in

the traditional way. Thestudio behind Wallace andGromit – AardmanAnimations – haveproduced a charming 3Ddelight for all the family. It's full of good 'olefashioned values and weall root for good-naturedArthur as he does his bestto save all that iswonderful aboutChristmas.

With funny dialogueand fantastic animationthis could well make it onto the list of classicseasonal movies that are

dusted down each year fora re-showing.

More likePretentious inParis

Arthur Christmas After seeing “Vicky,Cristina, Barcelona” I

already thought thatWoody Allen had lost it.However, I didn’t let thatput me off wanting to seehis new project “Midnightin Paris”. The nicest thing Ican say about “Midnight inParis” is, it’s cute. OwenWilson did his best, butWoody Allen isn’timproving and is lacking inoriginality.

Maybe lacking inoriginality is a little

harsh, but not even half anhour into the movie andI’m already thinking of“Purple Rose of Cairo”.Although that is one of myfavourite Allen movies, it’snot a good idea to use thesame kind of concepttwice. I held out suchhope for “Midnight inParis”, but it didn’t do it – itwas like some unknowndirector trying to make aWoody Allen movie anddidn’t quite pull it off. Thehumour was lacking, thedialogue average and thestory was OK, but theconstant name droppingand characters were justdownright pretentious.

The story is about OwenWilson, who is engaged

to Rachael McAdams. He’snot happy with his life inHollywood and wants tobecome a writer and live inParis (preferably in the20s). McAdams, however, doesn’t feel the same way,so, when she bumps in tosome friends, she decidesto see Paris with them andWilson takes thisopportunity to wander thestreets alone. Wilson walksaround and gets a bit lost, sits on some church steps, and at the stroke ofmidnight an old 1920s carrolls up and the next thingyou know Wilson ispartying in the 20s. Overthe following nights, he meets, Dali, Picasso,

Hemmingway, Stein,Fitzgerald, Buñuel, etc,

Basically everyoneinvolved in the arts in

Paris during that decade, appears in the film, withthe exception of Joyce. Onone of his nights in the 20she meets this girl, whowants to live in the BelleEpoch era, and not to givetoo much away, Lautrec,Gaugin and Degas makean appearance. Wilsongets back to his own timeand makes his decisionand then the movie, justkind of ends.

This movie is quirky atbest and considering all

the lame movies that are inthe cinema, this onedoesn’t seem that bad. Butanother thing thatbothered me a little bitabout this movie, was thatMcAdams wardrobe isshocking, everything shewore made her look fatand Martin Sheens’character, was just awful,he was one of those“experts” on everything, ugh!

What adisappointment, it

was like Americanwedding cake, nice to lookat, sweet, but with nosubstance to it.Unfortunately Allen, justisn’t funny anymore, it’stime for him to retire, before he makes a fool ofhimself.

It can be challenging to figure out where to direct your attention as too manythings could be tugging you in different directions. Therefore, it may bebeneficial to bear in mind that there is something you are not seeing clearlythat is trying to make itself known. Even though it is in your nature to directforce with precision, this week is urging you to go with the flow until a clearerpicture presents itself.

Communication is the key this week, do not assume the facts that others aretelling you to be accurate, always question and find things out for yourself.Make sure you know what is at stake before making any changes. You doknow what needs to be done even if others are standing around waiting. Useyour talents, take control; old structures are dissolving - get ready for thematerialisation of the new.

Sometimes we need to let others know that we mean business. This is one ofthose times - perhaps you have been questioning certain decisions that youhave made and are wondering if the risk was too great. On the other handsometimes you just have to take things to the limit in order for the right thingto play out. Take the action, make those courageous moves and you will getthe feedback you need.

This is an emotional time for you when your sensitivity is increased and yourinstincts heightened. Making excuses and finding reasons for not doingthings is easy at the moment, this is because there are a lot of planets movingin retrograde making you feel static inside. However, the opportunitiesaround you are tumultuous right now, even if you make a mistake somehowit will benefit you – put your ideas into action.

Prepare your heart to beat a bit faster as a jolt of love stirs your circulation.making you realise that in the end all the hard knocks have been worth it.Love does make the world go round and any person can soon forget theirhistory of heartache. Personal relationships are taking the turn for the betterand those that have become too stale, stagnant or borne out of habit have aspark injected into them.

Keep moving forward, do not give up or turn away, be willing to go out on alimb if you have to and try something completely different for a change. A newjob or change of employment responsibilities could occur so just focus yourattention on being the best you can be. That is all you have to do and you willhave everything under control. Follow what feels right and you can’t go wrong.

“Every thought is a thing” they say, well this applies to you in as much as thisis not the time to just think but also the time to speak and then take action. We all know you aim to please but right now your honesty is not onlyappreciated - it is necessary and it is your responsibility in the scheme of thingsto deliver. Say what you mean and mean what you say, harmony will be theeventual result.

Do not settle for less than you want or need, but at the same time you needto be aware that things will probably not take the path and direction that youexpect. There will be some unexpected corners to veer you off the path whenyou least expect it. You have tremendous influence over a delicate situation.Positive thinking will allow you to shine brightly, allowing you become thecentre of attention this week.

Some hidden truths have made their way out recently and it has caused youto go off centre, but also to lean on what is working, is right and is well in yourworld. By the weekend we see the free-spirited Sagittarius rise once more andwhen you are in this mode anything goes and anything can happen. Put yourfoot on the accelerator and hang on – you are in for one fast ride.

Take the weight off your feet; it is time for a breather. Use this time to gatheryourself together and review your plans. An experience feels brand new andthis adventure is allowing a sense of inner liberation to take place. It is time tomake the most of something no matter what is going on, so let go of anyexpectations or the need to control outcomes and let the universe decidewhere it is going to take you.

The urge to fight for what you want is high in you this week. Perhaps you needto fight for what you love and love the thing you are fighting for. There seemsto be no middle ground when the thing you want and need means the worldto you. A fearless Aquarian who is willing to take up the sword for a swiftconclusion is quite intimidating – your courage goes a long way.

As you come out of your safe cave and start to rise above emotional situationsthat have occurred recently, be aware that there are also those who will comealong and try to knock you back down. Someone in your life may find yournew-found confidence a threat. You are talented, creative and intuitive - thekey here is to raise yourself even higher, do not ignore them but teach themfrom example how to behave.

Combine the flour, yeast, and salt in a large bowland mix to combine. Add the water and herbs, ifusing, and mix well. The dough will be very stickyand shaggy-looking. Cover the bowl with plasticwrap and set aside at room temperature for 18 to24 hours. Generously flour a work surface. Thedough will have risen and will be covered inbubbles. Transfer the dough to the work surfaceand dust it with flour. Fold the dough in half, andthen form the dough into a ball by stretching andtucking the edges of the dough underneath theball. (Note: To ensure the dough is fully risen andready for the oven, do the “Poke Test”: flour yourindex and middle fingers, and poke the side ofyour loaf about half an inch deep. If theindentations spring back, the dough still needs

more time to rise. When the indentations stay put,the loaf is ready to bake.) Liberally flour a kitchentowel (do not use terry cloth). Place the dough ballon the floured towel. Cover with another flouredtowel. Let the dough rise for about two hours in awarm place. Preheat the oven to 450ºF . Place alidded Dutch oven or deep heavy duty casseroledish (with lid) into the oven to preheat. Carefullyremove the hot baking dish from the oven.Remove the lid and gently turn the dough ball intothe ungreased baking dish, seam-side up; shakethe dish so the dough is more evenly distributed.Cover and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the lidand bake until the crust is golden brown, 15 to 20minutes. Remove the loaf from the baking dishand let it cool on a rack before slicing.

Directions

Ingredients: (Serves 4) No Knead Bread

This is a very easy-to-make bread recipe with none of the arm-breaking kneadinginvolved. The outcome is a lovely, lacy bread that you can add all manner of differentherbs to as you go along. You can also add some chopped onion if you want but, as thatis moist, cut down just a wee bit on the warm water to compensate. As the weatherstarts to cool a little, there’s nothing to beat a loaf of home-made bread - Give it a go !

After studying data onnatural disastersworldwide for the past 10years, researchers atHarvard Universityconcluded thatearthquakes have a biggerimpact on health thanother natural disasters suchas floods and hurricanes. Inthe past decade, earthquakes have causedmore than 780,000 deaths –almost 60% of all disaster-related mortality. As well asthe immediate deaths, many people receiveserious injuries whichcannot be treated becauseof the quake damage to

infrastructure. Otherdisasters, such as floodsand hurricanes typicallycause many deaths fromdrowning, but fewerinjuries. Children are oftenat higher risk of injury anddeath during earthquakesthan adults. In Haiti in2010, 53% of patients wereyounger than 20 years oldand 25% were under five.Depression can also becommon after earthquakes– affecting up to 72% of thepopulation. Theresearchers found that afterthe 1999 Turkeyearthquake, 17% of thepopulation had suicidal

thoughts. There are morethan a million earthquakes,of varying severity, aroundthe world each year. Manyof the world's major citiesare on fault lines, includingLos Angeles, Tokyo, NewYork, Delhi and Shanghai, putting millions of peopleat risk from earthquakes.

Light'promising'tool againstcancerLight is a "promising" toolin the fight against cancer, according to researchers atthe National CancerInstitute in the US. In theirstudy, they used anantibody which targetsproteins on the surface ofcancerous cells. They thenattached a chemical, IR700,to the antibody. IR700 isactivated when it is hit bynear infra-red light, awavelength that can

penetrate severalcentimetres into the skin. Totest the antibody-chemicalcombination, researchersimplanted tumours into thebacks of mice which werethen given the drug andexposed to near infra-redlight. The tumour volumewas significantly reducedcompared to untreatedcontrol mice and survivalwas significantly prolonged. The researchers said this

selective killing minimisesdamage to normal cells andthe combination was "apromising therapeutic anddiagnostic agent for thetreatment of cancer".Currently, treatments forcancer can be separatedinto three categories:blasting with radiation, surgically removing atumour or using drugs tokill the cancerous cells. Allhave side effects andscientists are trying to comeup with more precisetherapies. A spokesman forCancer Research UK saidthe research was promisingbut added that theexperiment was done withmice and it was much tooearly to tell if it will work inpeople with cancer.

November 3rd 1957 saw the launch ofa Russian dog called Laika on board

Sputnik 2. Scientists believed humanswould be unable to survive the launch orthe conditions of outer space, so theyviewed flights by animals as a necessaryprecursor to human missions. As littlewas known about the impact of spaceflight on living creatures at the time ofLaika's mission, and as the technology tode-orbit and return to Earth had not yetbeen invented, then there was noprovision for Laika's survival.

Laika was a three-year-old femalemongrel found as a stray wandering

the streets of Moscow. Soviet scientistschose to use stray dogs since theyassumed that such animals had alreadylearned to endure conditions of extremecold and hunger. Her true pedigree isunknown, although it is generallyaccepted that she was part husky andpart terrier. To adapt her to the confinesof the tiny cabin of Sputnik 2, she waskept in progressively smaller cages forperiods up to 20 days. The extensiveclose confinement caused her to stopurinating or defecating and caused hergeneral condition to deteriorate. In truthshe was undernourished anddehydrated.

Laika was placed inside the capsule ofSputnik 2 on 31st October 1957, three

days before launch. At that time of yearthe temperature at the launch site wasextremely cold and a hose connected toa heater that was meant to keep hercontainer warm failed. Therefore twoassistants were assigned to keep aconstant watch on Laika before launch.Sensors showed her heart rate was 103beats/min before launch and increasedto 240 beats/min during the lift off. Laikacompleted three orbits of the Earth. Butafter seven hours into the flight it wasdecided that she had endured enoughand no further sign of life was receivedfrom the spacecraft. Poisoned food hadbeen fed to her.

Five months later, after 2,570 orbits,Sputnik 2 disintegrated – along with

Laika's remains – during re-entry onApril 14, 1958.

But although Laika was the first animalto orbit the Earth she was not the first

in space. At least 10 other dogs werelaunched into sub-orbital flights beforethe historic date of April 12th 1961, whenYuri Gagarin became the first human inspace. The Americans had first launchedfruit flies (of all things) on board acaptured German V2 rocket in February

1947. The rocket achieved 68 miles highthat qualified it for space travel beforesuccessfully parachuting back to Earth. In 1949 Albert, a Rhesus monkey, wasblasted into space and this time reached83 miles high. Unfortunately theparachute failed to deploy and Albert hitthe ground at over 1,300 miles an hour.

On January 31st 1961, Ham the Chimpwas launched in a Mercury capsule

aboard a Redstone missile. Ham hadbeen trained to pull levers to receiverewards of banana pellets and avoidelectric shocks delivered throughelectrodes fitted to his feet. His flightdemonstrated the ability to performtasks during space flight (and avoidgetting electrocuted). Three monthslater, on May 5th 1961, the United Statessent Alan Shepard into space to becomethe first American in space.

Other animals have been on furtherjourneys. On September 14th 1968

the Russians launched a tortoise (what!)around the Moon and in 1969 twobullfrogs were launched on a one-waymission into deep space to study theeffects of space motion sickness. Thecrew of Apollo 17 carried five mice to theMoon and back although one died andwas ‘ceremonially buried’ in space – viathe toilet waste dump.

Since then a whole menagerie ofanimals have been in space. From silk

worms to chickens’ eggs andMadagascar hissing cockroaches toSouth African flat rock scorpions. But myfavourite has to be on June 28, 2007 whenBigelow Aerospace launched Mexicanjumping beans into space. What in God’sname did they expect to discover fromthat?!

So take a minute to salute the braveunsung heroes who weren’t given the

choice but instead were chosen to boldlygo where no man had gone before.

Your outlook on the World nOpinion & Comment 27the ewsn

Is it possible for you to put myletter in the letters column? It’s a letter to the thief whostole a beautiful eveningdress from the SOS stall at LaTrocha market. We would likeeveryone to keep a look outfor the person wearing a longblack off-the-shoulderevening dress with black andwhite fine feathers at the bustline, and pearl beading onsections of the dress. It was avery expensive dress that wasdonated to SOS to raise muchneeded funds to feed the

dogs in our care, and somedespicable person seemed tothink their need for a poshfrock was greater than theneeds of the hungry dogs.

Editor says: I have a fridgemagnet that says: “The morepeople I meet, the more I lovemy dog.” I think it wasprobably made about peoplelike this. I know times are hardand, although I don’t condoneit, I can understand it ifsomeone had to take food tosurvive but, an evening frock?

Give me strength! Whoeveryou are that stole it, I hope youfeel thoroughly ashamed ofyourself and it would do a lotof good to either take it back, undamaged to the CHAINshop in La Trocha or to TheNews offices in Coin and nomore would be said. You can’twear it as now around 75,000readers of The News are goingto be looking for it so, don’teven think of throwing it awayand do the decent thing – giveit back!

This week I want to pay tribute to all the unsung heroesof space travel; that is the animals that tried it first.

I watched the final ceremonyat Wooton Bassett, where thetown has been grantedLetters Patent designating it‘Royal’ because of therespectful honour it accorded– during almost four years –to more than 350 deadservice men and womenreturned to the UK throughthe town. The Princess Royal,Prime Minister and (new)Defence Secretary werepresent. Once again, expressions of praise, gratitude and remembrancewere freely made. How, then, can the

government allow, let alonesupport, thedisenfranchisement of retiredmilitary personnel simplybecause they now liveabroad? There are both moraland democratic deficits inthis situation, especially sincethe government is proud ofhaving put the MilitaryCovenant on a legal basis. How can it not see the blatantdiscrepancy? The people of Royal WootonBassett have shown whatthey think of our armedforces. Are our politiciansshowing what they think of

them by denying their right tovote in their homeland? Please everyone – help us allby making sure that as manyBritish citizens as possible arepetitioning for thepermanent right to vote forall British citizens where everthey live. We all know that having thevote does not put right manyproblems, in fact not a lot –but it is a first step. Wrongswill never be sorted outunless at first one hasrepresentation!Solidarity Among Brits!

The last race of the 800cchad drizzling rain fallingintermittently throughout, and an accident beforeturn one that left four ofthe main riders in thegravel.

Alvaro Bautista’sfront wheel wastouched by AndreaDovizioso’s rearwheel and resultedin Bautista losing thefront of his Suzuki, hein turn then broughtdown factory Ducatiteam-matesValentino Rossi andNicky Hayden, plusPramac Ducati'sRandy de Puniet.

The accident washugely frustrating forthe Ducati riders, since their bike hadperformed well indamp conditionsthroughout theweekend.

Pole sitter Stonerwas soondisappearing, riding toa ten-second lead untilthe rain intensified withsix of the 30 lapsremaining. TheRepsol Honda rideralmost instantly lost all ofhis advantage as Ben Spiesand Dovizioso homed-in onthe #27. With two laps to goStoner's Honda got out of

him wideandallowingSpies intothe lead.

The FactoryYamaha rider, who took hisfirst win in similar dampconditions earlier this yearat Assen, was looking like hewas about to get his second

victory but he exited verygingerly from the very finalturn allowing the doubleworld champion to snatchvictory back from Spies byjust 0.015sec. Stoner later said “I made

a mistake and went intoneutral and Ben came pastand rode a good few laps. Ididn't know how I could getpast him but I realised Icould get a much betterdrive out of the last cornerso I tried to get as close as Icould."I got fantastic drive out

of the final turn… sorry toBen!" smiled Stoner. It wasStoner's tenth victory of theyear.

British rider CalCrutchlow managed tofinish fourth – the bestfinish of his MotoGP career– as he claimed the rookieof the year award.MonsterYamaha Tech 3 riderCrutchlow sealed his bestMotoGP finish and therookie title by overtakingAbraham on the final lap, with the Czech riderclipping Crutchlow's rearwheel and running off soonafter. Abraham crossed theline eighth. Loris Capirossi, making his 328th and lastGrand Prix start, rode fromtwelfth on the grid to ninth. The Italian raced with the#58 on his Pramac Ducati asa tribute to MarcoSimoncelli.

The FA are refusing to give up their fight with FIFA to let England's footballerswear their poppies with pride at Wembley on Saturday. General secretary AlexHorne sent a letter to the world game's governing body on Monday in thehope of persuading Sepp Blatter to change his mind. FIFA turned down theinitial request because they view the poppy as a political symbol which, undertheir rules, players are not allowed to wear on their kit.

Bore draw at Betis

With over 500 Malagasupporters in Sevilla foranother Andalucian derby,Malaga were hoping foranother three points tomaintain their Europeanleague spot.

The opening of thegame was poor withneither side creating anyreal chances. Both sideshad speculative long shotsbut neither side looked likescoring. The second halfwas slightly better, Pozuelofor Betis looked lively butMalaga seemed moreintent on gaining a point

than striving for the win.On 55 minutes Rondonmet a Duda cross only tosee his header well savedby Casto. That would havebeen a little harsh on Betis.Ex Betis player Joaquintried hard for Malaga butthe final ball was poor, andGamez shot in the sidenetting when he shouldhave done better. Overallit was a lacklustre Malagapeformance against a poorBetis side that were therefor the taking.
