They pointed out that fireshave broken out in thesame area for several yearsnow and they do notbelieve this is acoincidence. Mijas mayorAngel Nozal agreed with

them. He said there wereno electricity pylons in thearea which could havebeen struck by lightning, and there was no solidproof that a barbecue hadstarted the fire. He said

there were many reasonswhy the fire did not startspontaneously. “There arepeople who have had theirbuilding plans paralysedfor urban planningreasons, others have been

fined for disposing ofrubbish in the campo andthen there are the usualarsonists,” he said.

On the other hand, in2007, the Junta's

environment departmentidentified 680 places witha high risk of fire in Malagaprovince, the majority ofthem between Marbellaand Mijas.

The EEBreport also noted that thecity authorities hadavoided answering several

The Cabinet is expected toapprove a decree re-imposing a tax on thewealthy at its next meetingon Friday, in line with theelection promise of AlfredoPérez Rubacalba, theSocialist candidate in thegeneral election. In 2008,the government offered100-percent tax breaks onthe wealth tax without fullyabolishing it. As it stillremains on the statute itcan be easily revived bymeans of a decree.

According to SocialistParty sources, thegovernment is expected toapprove a tax thresholdthat will only affect the verywealthy, exempting the

middle classes. The mainreason the governmentgave for removing thewealth tax in 2008 was thatit affected the middleclasses rather than the richwho could find ways ofavoiding it. It is estimatedthat the tax could bring in€1.4 billion which wouldbe used create jobs foryoung people.

The survey also showedthat 81 per cent of Socialistvoters were expecting acrushing defeat. Accordingto Metroscopia, Socialistvoter participation coulddrop to 70 per cent, fivepoints less than in 2008,and similar to levels in2000, when José MaríaAznar won an absolutemajority. Although theSocialist Party candidate,Adolfo Perez Rubalcaba, came out more popularthan Mariano Rajoy, 42 per

cent of those questionedbelieve the latter willhandle the economic crisisbetter. Only 30 per centsaid Rubalcaba was morecapable. Most politicalobservers agree that theformer deputy PM'selection troubles arecompounded by the factthat he has not been ableto distance himselfenough from the negativeimage of Prime MinisterJosé Luis RodríguezZapatero.

A survey has revealed that as many as 1.4 million motorists aredriving around whilst being uninsured. The drivers, often young people who say they cannot afford theinsurance even though they can afford the car and its petrol, aretotting up a huge £500 million pounds worth of costs to insurancecompanies caused by accidents they cause, sometimes duringhit-and-run incidents. This means that the cost of insurance for drivers who do obey thelaw is set to go up by another £30 a year to cover it.If caught, the offenders are likely to get just three points on theirlicence and a £100 fine that they often do not pay. A broadcasteron Sky News on Monday said: “With that kind of penalty, nowonder they don’t pay their insurance dues. Why would theywhen they hardly ever get caught and, when they do, it’s cheaperthan paying for insurance anyway. We need to see much toughersentences where the punishment fits the crime.”

Minister for Europe, DavidLidington, recently metseveral British citizens todiscuss property issues inSpain where he heard first-hand the problemsaffecting some purchasers, especially difficultiesrecovering deposits bothwith and without bankguarantees and theconsequent stress this iscausing.

Mr Lidingtonemphasised that theBritish government isconcerned about theimpact that theseproblems are having andthat both ministers and theambassador will continueto raise these issues withthe Spanish government.

He stressed, however, that the best advice theBritish government couldgive continued to be; thatbuyers should do theirresearch and seekappropriate legal advice.

The one-off meeting on8th September followed apetition submitted by RuthGenda, highlighting thefailure of many developersto issue legally requiredbank guarantees on off-plan purchases.

The minister went on toexplain; the Britishgovernment cannotprevent the Spanishgovernment fromencouraging foreigninvestment in their

property market. It is amatter for prospectivepurchasers to decidewhether or not they wish tobuy in Spain. Whilst thereare a significant number ofpeople experiencingproblems who thegovernment is doing all itcan to help, the vastmajority of people live inSpain happily.

The minister said: “Iadvise anyone consideringbuying a property abroadto do your research, learnabout whatdocumentation you musthave in hand and makesure that you seekindependent legal advicefrom a lawyer who isexperienced in propertylaw.”

In addition, there is awealth of information onbuying in Spain availableon the UK in Spainwebsite, both for thosewho are thinking ofbuying, and for those whoare unfortunately facingproblems.

Había - There was or there were.We have looked at various uses of Hay (there is, there are), hay que (you have to) and habrá (there will be) in the last two articles. Now we are going to look at how togo into the past tense to say There was and there were.

Basically the word to use is había.Había mucha gente en la playa hoy. - There were a lot of people on thebeach today.Había un incendio muy, muy grande en la montaña esta semana. - Therewas a very, very big fire in the mountains this week.

(Perhaps you know the trick of adding ísimo/ísima to words to make them very, very) So muy,muy grande, very, very big becomes grandísimo or grandísimaMuy, muy rápido/rápida becomes rapidísimo/rapidísimaMuy, muy guapo/guapa becomes guapísimo/guapísima

We could have said Había un incendio grandisímo en la montaña.Había muchos helicópteros con bolsas de agua. - There were lots ofhelicopters with bags of water.Había muchos aviones también. - There were lots of planes too.Gracias a Dios, no había muertos - Thanks be to God, there were no fatalities.

And similar to hay que - one has to, we can use había que - one had toHabía que evacuar a más de trescientas personas - More than threehundred people had to be evacuated. Había que ver las llamas - You had to see the flames. Había que rescatar a una pareja mayor - An elderly couple had to be rescued.

And that's the excitement in this neck of the woods for now!

Hasta la próxima - Until next time. Valerie.

Memo fromMadridMartin DelfínWrites for the English language version of

The LocalVoice

Muriel Pilkington

With the general election just 10weeks away, this may be anopportune moment to clear up

some political terms that may beconfusing to Britons who can read theSpanish press, or who read El Pais inEnglish online.

El Pais uses American terms for thesimple reason that the print versionis published by the International

Herald Tribune, which is the Europeanversion of the New York Times.

Here at The News, we use Britishterms to identify office holders.Hence el presidente Zapatero

becomes Prime Minister Zapatero and wedon't call Parliament Congress or theUpper House the Senate, as they do inSpanish – Congreso and Senado. Likewisewe call diputados MPs and the senadoresare members of the Upper House.

I'm not quite sure what happened here, although we must bear in mind thatthe Spanish insist on being different.

The political system is what theConstitution calls a parliamentarymonarchy so King Juan Carlos is head ofstate and his second-in-command shouldbe a prime minister not a president. However, a prime minister is essentiallythe first among equals, and this may notgo down well in a country whereeverybody wants to be top dog. I'm notbeing rude or slagging off the Spanish. Ionly wish I had €100 for every time aSpaniard has said to me, “Scratch aSpaniard's skin and you'll find a littleFranco underneath”.

The translation of these terms hasbeen bugging me for a long timenow but I've decided we should

follow the British nomenclature to makeit simpler for our readers. People whowant to read the daily news highlights inEnglish can google ElPais.es which willbring up the front page. The Englishversion is on the right-hand side of theblue bar listing the different sections.Only the top three or four stories aretranslated on a daily basis and thespelling can be a bit quirky. Someonedecided recently to use the wordprotestors rather than protesters because– I was told – it's more in line withdemonstrators. In fact, both spellings arecorrect, according to the Oxford EnglishDictionary, but I prefer the version we'reall used to. But I digress, so let's get backto that election.

And the winner is ….

Mariano Rajoy, according to all theopinion polls – and it looks as ifthe Partido Popular leader will

get an outright majority to boot. All Iknow is he's acting more and more like agreat statesman with every passing day, while warning the party faithful not to betoo complacent.

Iget the feeling that people are tired ofthe present government's fumblingattempts to solve the economic crisis

– which admittedly isn't at all that easy tosolve. However, most people seem toaccept that a lot of belt-tightening iscalled for – they just want a governmentthat will take focused action. The PP'sleader in Andalucia, Javier Arenas put itvery succinctly in a speech to a party rallyon Sunday in Granada that a PPgovernment would be the “most austerethe country had ever had” but withouttouching those four sacred cows – healtheducation, social services and pensions.Another thing that people haven'tforgotten is that José Maria Aznar clearedup the huge deficit the Socialists left himin 1996 and handed over an extremelyhealthy economy to Zapatero in 2004.

Other predictions

The El Pais survey published onMonday which gives the PP a solidlead in the November 20th election

also predicts that Rosa Diez's UP&D andthe Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) arelikely to pick up disillusioned Socialistvotes. Rosa Diez founded the party justsix months before the 2008 election andgot one seat. A Basque herself and aEuro-MP at the time, she broke with theSocialist Party when Zapatero started totalk to the terrorist group ETA. She alsotalks a lot of sense – which is why shehas been able to gain in just four yearsthe support it's taken the IU 18 years towin. Right on, Rosa.

Crisis in the classroomsSpain is different

The crisis in the school system infour regions is expected to becomeanother ingredient in a social

bomb already about to explode and nodoubt rip through the markets. InMadrid, thousands of public schoolteachers are expected to begin today(Wednesday) the first of a series ofdemonstrations throughout the region toprotest against premier EsperanzaAguirre’s attempt to introduce deep cutsin the costs of providing education to thecommunity’s estimated 650,000 of the 1.1million students who attend publicschool. The Popular Party leader wants toraise the number of teaching hours from18 to 20 per week for secondary schoolteachers, which would mean that, according to the unions, as many as 3,500substitute teachers and teachers’ aideswill be out of a job because they will nolonger be needed to fill the two-hour gapper week. The PP-led regionalgovernment says it will save up to €80million for the upcoming school year. Butin effect, Aguirre is acting like a companyboss, slashing payroll and allowing thecash-strapped central government totake up the financial burden by payingout unemployment benefits. Similarcutbacks are being proposed in Castilla-La Mancha, Galicia and Navarre.

On Monday, as the teachers’ groupswere meeting to set dates for theirseries of strikes, Aguirre accused

the opposition, specifically the Socialistand United Left (IU) parties, as well asthe May 15th Movement and the artistsand intellectuals (collectively known as“those of the eyebrow,” as they promotedthemselves in support of Prime MinisterJosé Luis Rodríguez Zapatero during his2008 re-election campaign) for spreading“falsehoods” about the firings. In herTwitter account, Aguirre wrote that the“only thing” she did was to raiseclassroom hours from 18 to 20 but shemade no mention about job cutbacks.

Teachers argue that more hours andbigger classrooms would mean lessindividual time with the students

and poorer learning standards. Theirdetractors say that public schoolinstructors have the best jobs in thecountry, with excellent pay and generousholiday periods. Madrid’s education chiefLucía Figar insisted that teachers will getpaid for those additional hours and saidthat the regional government hasearmarked €10.3 million for the extra pay.But also fuelling their anger is the fact thatthe teachers will have to face periodicinspections by supervisors who willensure that they are remaining in theclassroom those extra two hours. Furiousteachers’ unions have decided to go onthe offensive – with some help from theMay 15th Movement – and will also shutdown classrooms on September 20th and21st.

In the bigger picture of things, thedemonstrations can actually be seenas mirror images of the volatile

protests that are taking place in Greece, anation that is on the verge of financialcollapse. Social tensions in the Greekcapital sparked violent clashes over theweekend between police and striking taxidrivers and tax collectors. They areprotesting against a host of austeritymeasures, including higher VAT andproperty taxes, being put into place by theSocialist government of Prime MinisterGeorge Papandreou in a desperate effortto prevent a Greek default. It is only amatter of time for the protests in Madridto swell.

With a conservative but combativePopular Party government – lessopen to dialogue than the

Socialists have been – set to win thegeneral election on November 20th, socialtensions fuelled by workers, students andother disgruntled citizens can only beexpected to get worse.

CommunityNo fires yet please! There are certain times ofthe year when it is actuallyillegal to have a fire of anysort in Andalucia, and yes, that includes those whothink they can have “just alittle fire to burn my gardenrubbish”. Every year assoon as it rains for a day orwe hit September 1st, thereare fires springing up allover the place – Spanish,British and everybody elseseem to suspend commonsense and becomepyromaniacs.

The fact is that thecampo at this time of yearis still a tinderbox waitingto go up with all our housesetc with it so, please, caneverybody show a little bitof common sense and notlight fires until we’ve had atleast a few days of rain andeverywhere has beendamped down.

What has happened inthe campo around Mijasand Calahonda can easilyhappen elsewhere and all ittakes is one small spark toset it off – just because you

think it wouldn’t be yourfire to do it because youhave a hose standing by if itgets out of hand doesn’tmean that the sparks thatgo up with the smoke won’tdo it.

The other thing, ofcourse, is that if you are asmoker, be aware that thelittle pull-out or pop-upboxes in your car are notnecessarily there forchange for the parkingmeter! They are ashtrays toput your cigarette out in.Do not flick them out of the

window as you’re goingalong on to the verge andmerrily carry on yourjourney – it would be yourfault if a fire starts as aresult of chucking out yourfag end.

Keep yourselves, yourneighbours, all the animalsand the people that have tofight these fires safe!

MOVIE SPOTLIGHT By Amy Thomas

For some of us of a certainage mention the nameGeorge Smiley, the plumplybland spymaster, and thevision of Alec Guinnesspops into the mind. Hemade the role his own in theBBC televised drama.

Gary Oldman took thedecision not to view thatoriginal series when he waspreparing for this role and,for all that he has a toughjob to follow on fromGuinness, he too makes therole his own.

The story is set in 1973 andSmiley, the formerspymaster, is brought out ofretirement to investigatesuspicions that a Russianmole is operating at the veryhighest level of Britishintelligence.

Just who is the traitor? The main suspects aresmooth womaniser BillHaydon (Colin Firth), thecomplacent Percy Allenine(Toby Jones), soldier RoyBland (Ciaran Hands), anddevious Toby Esterhase

(David Dencik). It'scomplex, and a group ofexpert actors bring all theirskills to the table in thisclassic Cold War tale ofhonour and betrayal. Andof course, it is set in the 70s,so don't expect all actionsuper-slick effects a laBourne or MissionImpossible.

The critics are toutingOldman's performance asSmiley for next year'sawards, and about time too.Oldman has made his markin recent years with

supporting roles in two ofthe biggest cinemafranchises – as Sirius Blackin the Potter saga, andCommissioner Gordon inthe Christian Bale Batmanmovies. Not once during hiscareer as an actor has hereceived an awardnomination – though he didreceive nominations asdirector for Nil by Mouth. Soit would be high time if hewere to be nominated forthis classy performance ofthe inscrutable Smiley. Amust-see.

“Fright Night” is based onthe 1985 film of the samename. Personally, I didn'tparticularly care about theoriginal. It was okay, but Ididn't think it was anythingspecial. The mix of horror andcomedy has given it adedicated following over theyears. I've never seen thesequel, but everything I'veheard says it's pretty bad. Now, remakes and rebootsare all the rage, especially ifthey are a movie from the80s. Many of these remakeshave been merely okay atbest, and most are pointless. So how does this remakestand up? Incredibly well, infact.

The movie has beenupdated with

contemporary themes, instead of large Gothicmansions set in someanonymous suburb, this isset in regular homes near LasVegas. There's a lot playedwith the last decade'shousing boom andsubsequent crash. Real lifeproblems such asforeclosures and abandonedhouses put a modern twiston classic vampire lore. Thismakes this version muchmore relatable to modernaudiences. The famous Vegasnightlife and spectacleshows play a big role in thefilm and complementvampire lore in a modernway perfectly.

The cast is good all around. No one falls short. Anton

Yelchin handles being thecentre of the movie, as theinsecure and semi-neurotic

but undeniably likable teenhero. The two standoutperformances are by DavidTennan as Peter Vincent andColin Farrell as JerryDandrige. Tennan bringssome of Russell Brand intohis version and makes a funand interesting role that is hisown.

Though it's Farrell whosteals the movie as the

villain, he's incredibly creepybut almost charming. There'san intelligence that comesthrough his performance in aBela Lugosi's Dracula kind ofway. My only problem withFarrell’s performance was heseemed to be overdoing it abit with his eyes, I thought hewas going to start doing animpersonation of NickCotton – “eat ya beans Ma’”.What makes the casteffective as a whole is theircollective decision to playeverything straight, whereothers might've beentempted to go over-the-topor cornball thanks to thematerial, which is really thestuff of B-grade horror films.

Fright Night is one of thoseremakes that easily

equals, and quite possiblysurpasses, the original. Itwisely uses the originalmerely as a frame to craft itsown story. Fans of theoriginal should appreciatethe modern script and twist, and it should be entertainingenough to draw in new fans. This is the kind of remakethat movie fans wait for. Let'sjust hope that the remake ofthe sequel, if and when, isbetter than the original!

There is a rebellious streak rising within you this week - perhaps you are fedup of the day-to-day routines and desire more action and adventure in yourlife? As long as you don’t get reckless this can be a very productive time whenyou try out some new ideas, go to different places and mingle with a newcircle of acquaintances. Your powers of intuition are strong right now so listento your inner voice when it comes to making a decision.

A great deal of your time has been spent planning, preparing and thinkingabout the future, you have been trying to come up with ways to fix somethingand make it better than the way you found it. This week you will not onlyfigure out a way to improve your situation, focus and direction you will alsosee that it is done. All the efforts you are making, emotionally and mentally, are going to pay off. Make sure you look the part in any business interactions.

Decisions cannot be put off any longer; you have come to the end of the linewith your mind telling you one thing and your emotions telling you a differentstory. You could find yourself dealing with those who feel exactly the oppositeto you, this will allow you to see the flip side of the coin, that there are twosides to every scenario. This a time when you must take action, not sit aroundand wait for things to happen. Go for it, Gemini.

This is the time to find what you enjoy doing and do it. You are in a processof transition where you are required to rise above the emotions and realisethe strength and power within to make your dreams come to reality. Successis on its way, start loving what you do and where you fit in a situation andyou will begin to feel that you have found your niche. There are some thingsthat only you can do, some conversations that only you can have.

This week is all about finding a balance in your personal relationships, beingopen and honest about where you see things heading. It is much better tobe upfront sometimes instead of keeping something ticking along with nodirection. Clarity enters your world and you may find that you have an innerknowing as to the direction you know you need to take. Do what you needto do and let your passions guide you.

Your strength, Virgo, is your innate ability to see the whole picture and alsoscrutinise the parts, seeing things that others miss. Something inspires you andenthuses you into action, you can see on the horizon what potential is outthere. Slowly but surely you are finding your way. Everything happens for areason and you are gaining insights into someone’s behaviour and learning tounderstand their motives. Take the high road, Virgo.

It is up to you to take the lead, to use that cardinal energy within you to takecharge when the moment calls for it. Everyone is waiting for someone to takecontrol and you are the one who knows what needs to be done, so get yourselforganised and in gear. There is no time for fears or worries just an innerconfidence that you will be able to manage the situation. Others will becaptivated by your ability to save the day, expect your popularity to increase.

There are great opportunities for major wealth and financial security but it willrequire some acknowledgement and action on your part to capitalise on whatis going on around you. No one can force you into taking action - it is up toyou. This is the time to put yourself first and take care of your own needs. Itmay seem selfish but if your needs are not met, how can you significantly helpothers? Listening to your gut instincts could pay off.

You never really know how much you are needed until something happens.Well, you are needed and appreciated and someone shows you thiswholeheartedly. There could be a breakthrough, something is at a releasingpoint and a weight is lifted. This will enable you to feel more in control of yourdestiny with your mind being active, alert and on top form. Life is about tospeed up, so prepare to feel light years ahead of the competition.

There is a feeling that you are running out of time but this is more of a fear thana reality. There is a lot sorting itself out behind the scenes - so make sure thatyou do not get too overwhelmed at present. You may be wondering why youhadn’t done something sooner but a big decision made recently will push youinto some calmer waters. A key person is around for support that will help youduring this phase, just trust and all will be well.

It is as if you have come out of a dark cave and your eyes are still adjusting tothe light, you can’t see as clearly as you would like because the light is still alittle too bright. In time your eyes will adjust and you will get used to living inthis new setting. You have faced a lot of your fears and really there is nothingthat can hold you back any longer. A lot of personal attention is coming yourway so bask in the flattery and enjoy.

Take time to catch your breath, Pisces, and reward yourself with some extrakindness by relaxing and resting. You can only push yourself so hard for solong - however, your efforts have been worth it and even though others maynot realise or notice the energy you have put into something, does it reallymatter? This is your time to come out of the depths of your safe ocean andshine – don’t wait to be asked just take the action you know is needed. Trustin your wisdom.

Next add the sweet potato, followed by the stock. Simmer gently andwhen the sweet potatoes start to soften, add the curry powder, ginger and turmericwith the pumpkin and apple. Continue to

simmer for a few minutes and add thetomato puree to the pan. Be careful nownot to over-cook the pumpkin as it willdisintegrate into the sauce. Brendan, who appears to endup romantically linked witheveryone he partners for thedance competition whiskedher off her feet, fireman styleand carried her off up thestairs – and she still did notlook at all pleased!

Even judge Craig RevelHorwood – now a Britishcitizen – said that he expectsto see the sparks flyingbetween the pair duringrehearsals – Tiaras andTantrums was his turn ofphrase – so it should make foran interesting season.

However, moving swiftlyalong, with Lulu (pictured onthe right of our picture)looking stunning for her age,Ms Dell’Ollio (Sven’s ex-squeeze to the left of ourpicture) had so much make-up over her face it looked likeit could be scraped off with aknife and watching them inrehearsals saw her huffingand puffing a bit. Havingbeen teamed up with AntonDu Beke one seriouslywonders how she is going toget on with Anton’s off-beatsense of fun.

Downton vs. SpooksThe TV planners are at itagain and, while a lot ofaudiences would not be thesame for the two new seriesof Downton Abbey versusSpooks, why do they do it?The ratings war is daft. If

you’ve got a goodprogramme, what is thepoint of putting it on at thesame time as anotherpopular show? You’d think

they’d have learned theirlessons after pitchingStrictly against the XFactorlast year. With Spooks intoit’s tenth season, Downtonon it’s second is likely tocome out the winner asmany think Spooks (thatused to be run on Monday’s)has run it’s time.

Programmers say thatthose with Sky+ can record itbut there are millions whodon’t have Sky+. Stupid!Anyway, both

programmes have their firstepisodes on Sunday.

He appearedin all 13 episodes of the firstseason that aired in 2010,and was preparing to shootthe second when he wasdiagnosed with cancer. While waiting forWhitfield's treatment andexpected recovery, thenetwork produced a six-part prequel. Spartacus:Gods Of The Arena wasbroadcast earlier this year, with only a brief voiceoverfrom the actor.

But in January afterWhitfield's condition grewworse, the networkannounced that Australianactor Liam McIntyre wouldtake over the title role.

It is 35 feet long, 15 feetwide, weighs 12 tons(about the size of a bus)and is out of control anddue to crash back toearth this month!

It could land anywhereon the earth but NASAestimate the chance ofany of it falling onsomeone is 1 in 3200.How they manage tocome up with thosefigures is any one’s guess. Most of the satellite willburn up as it re-entersthe earth’s atmosphere and only oneor two larger pieces are likely tosurvive to make it to the ground, butthroughout the entire 54 years ofspace travel no person has ever beenhit or injured by falling debris.

Satellites do return to earthregularly, as unused ones areallowed to decay in their orbit, almostall of them are controlled returns andare designed to fall harmlessly into anocean. The difference with UARS isthat it is falling out of control and sono one is exactly sure when or whereit will eventually land, the bestestimate is ‘late September’. Even twohours before re-entry, NASA will onlybe able to pinpoint the area of impactto within about 6,000 miles. But to behonest the chances of any of it evenfalling on dry land is so small that itpresents only a negligible risk.

Space satellites don’t have anyengines on board to keep them inorbit around the earth; they arepermanently in a state of free fall. Letme explain. If you threw a ball awayfrom you it would travel about 50 feetand then hit the ground. If you wentto the top of a mountain and threwthe ball much harder then it mighttravel a mile from you before it hit theground. If you fired the ball from acannon at the top of the mountain itcould travel 100 miles or more beforeit hit the ground. Now if you were 250miles up and you could throw the ballat 17,000 miles per hour, then the ballwould pass the edge of the earthbefore it could fall back. As the earthis round then the ball would continue‘trying’ to fall back to earth butconstantly ‘miss’ the recedinghorizon, hence you would be in orbitconstantly circling the earth. And asthere is practically no air resistance to

slow the ball (or satellite) then it willcontinue circling the earth.

Isay ‘practically’ no air resistance buteven at 250 miles up – which is theusual height for satellites to fly at –there is still a very minute resistancewhich, over time, causes the satellitesto gradually slow down and then startmoving in closer to the earth.Eventually the atmosphere begins toget thicker and affects the satellite. When this happens mission controlfires tiny nitrogen jets on the satelliteand nudges it back up to its normalorbital height.

There are approximately twenty-five thousand satellites and other

pieces of space junk in orbit aroundthe earth right now with, on average, two more being launched every week. They include communication andmobile phone satellites, GPS sat nav, weather satellites, earth resources, spy satellites, the Hubble SpaceTelescope, the ISS, satellite TV andspent rocket parts. The list is endless. If you go outside on any dark clearnight and keep looking up you wouldbe very unlucky indeed not to spot atleast a half dozen at any one time;they criss cross the sky almostconstantly. If you go to a website suchas www.heavens-above.com they givea list of all satellites crossing yourarea. You will be surprised at howmany there are!

One final point, if you do happento find a piece of a fallen satellite

you’re not allowed to keep it, it has tobe returned to the owner!

Your outlook on the World nOpinion & Comment 27the ewsn

I really appreciate your paper,it packs a lot, especially newssome of the others don't seemto adequately cover, and fits inmy handbag!! (for thosemoments in traffic jams, orwaiting in the cafe, or for thetrain etc. – ie always to handwith common sense). For that reason, as an expatresident here for 46 years, Iwould like to suggest MsPilkington puts on the glassesthat she's always holding in herpicture (page13 Sept 7th). Sheisn't even reading the lines, letalone between them. There isnothing wrong with being rightwing, I am often half way theremyself, but do at least be right. With a multi-party system, acountry is almost alwaysgoverned by a minority, asChurchill said – I paraphrase –democracy not a good system,at best it's 51 percent of thepopulation, the only problemis that all others are worse. We know exactly what broughtZapatero to power more thanany other factor, which was thearrogance of the ruling P.P.party under Aznar to takethose who vote for fools.

Within minutes of the MadridAtocha bombings our P.P.mayoress of Fuengirola(Malaga) had leaflets throughour doors exhorting us to waveat the demonstration she wascalling for that cursed E.T.A. forthe bombings, while even thedumbest bloke on the blockknew this was not E.T.A. tacticsand more likely Al Quaeda. After a series of similar insultsto intelligence, the young andold alike (Future 15-Msubscribers) rose to kick themout of office. A president'sefforts are often noticed in hishairline and colouring, viz.Obama, Zapatero, and evenright-wing, war-loving GeorgeBush. Jose Maria Aznar's haircolouring never changed onefraction. And the only positivething that can be said aboutthat is perhaps eventually, when out of office, he shavedhis moustache because his toplip grew tired of Grecian 2thousand!Also practically everyone in theworld knows that the currenteconomic crisis skidded intobeing because of the sub primedisgrace officially suggested,

encouraged and blessed by thelast Bush administration inorder to scrounge the votes ofthe lower incomes for hissecond office. The P.P. under Sr.Aznar's puppet Sr. Rajoy, lambasts the P.S.O.E. for thatand just about everything elseincluding the weather....noreally! The real ideas forimprovement will get them thevote now, nothing else. It'stime for some good statesmento take the helm, whateverparty. The "baby cheques"? I thinkthe statistics were that the birthrate in Spain was droppingfaster than anywhere else inEurope. Maybe Ms. Pilkingtondoesn't have children orgrandchildren and know howmuch it costs and why youngpeople needed help andencouragement to take theleap. Three thousand Euroswas hardly the level of Englandwhere it is more profitable tolive on benefits than to work.

Hey, but congrats for puttingby Ms Pilkington an intelligentadversary from El Pais, in theform of Sr. Martin Delfin!

In 1991 NASA launched a satellite on board a spaceshuttle called The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite(UARS).

As per the letter in last week’scopy of The News about thelack of water coming to ourarea of La Carreta in Coin, Iwould just like to say a hugethank-you for putting it in. Itoo went and had a look inour deposito as soon as I readthe letter in Wednesday’spaper saying that we weregoing to be cut off onThursday and, boy, was I gladI did!

Our deposito was nearlyempty but I was able to fill itup before they cut us offwhich means that, even if Ican’t do the washing, at leastwe can flush the loos! And, loand behold, from lastThursday we have hadabsolutely no water comingdown our pipes. Last timethere was a problem, thehouses above and around ushad no water for some sixweeks or more so let’s hope

that isn’t going to happenagain.

I noted with interest that youreditor lives in this area somaybe she could send one ofyour reporters up to the CoinTown Hall to find out what onearth they are doing andmaybe, with “the power ofthe press” behind us they’llfix the problems in the areaonce and for all.

We get no notice from theCouncil as to when and forhow long they are going tocut us off either. There is noexcuse for them not cominground a couple of days priorto cutting us off so that wecan all fill up our tanks. Theycould easily just put a note onour gates but they don’t seemto bother. I can’t see why, ifthe Mormons and theJehova’s Witnesses manage todo it they can’t show us just

that little bit of courtesy andlet us know what is going on.

Editor says: I very muchdoubt that Coin would takeany notice of us – they seem todo what they like when theylike with our water in thisarea. It’s a pain!

Vettel is just unstoppable

This time, the lightninggetaway came fromFernando Alonso, whodelighted the Tifosi byvaulting from fourth to firstby the Rettifilio, having run

three abreast with front rowstarters Vettel and LewisHamilton, and evensurvived a moment ofwheelspin as the right rear wheel touched the grass.Hamilton and Vetteltouched as the Ferraricame through, but escapedundamaged, while MichaelSchumacher also tookadvantage of a decent startto move into fourth, aheadof both Jenson Button andMark Webber. Red Bull'sAustralian Mark Webbercrashed out, after he got alittle over-eager in his urge

to keep pace, attempting to go around the outside ofFelipe Massa into the firstchicane. Although he soonrealised that the movewasn't on, Webber's

attempts to get out of itwere hampered by thekerbs in the middle of thechicane, which pitchedhim straight into thesecond Ferrari.

Although Massa wasdelayed, he escaped largelyunscathed, but the samecould not be said ofWebber, who lost his frontwing in the contact. Worsestill, part of the broken wing was jammed underthe car which theAustralian had noknowledge of and, by the

time he got to theParabolica, it robbed theRB7 of steering. Webberwas then a passenger as thecar bounced over the gravel and into the barrier,

effectively ending the onlyremaining challenge toVettel's title march. andwas one of eight cars toretire from an exhilaratingrace.

Vettel's victorycompleted a happy returnto Monza, where theGerman first startedmaking history when hebecame the youngest evergrand prix winner when hewon his maiden race at thehistoric circuit for ToroRosso three years ago.Vettel now leads the

championship from Alonsoby 112 points which meanshis first chance to seal aconsecutive world title willcome in Singapore in afortnight's time. Said Vettel"The start wasn't good, Idon't know whereFernando came from and ittook me a while to realisewe were three across thetrack."

His team-mate Webberlost second place in thestandings and concededhis championship was overfollowing his crash withFelipe Massa. Alonsomoved up to second on 172points, with Button andWebber level in third on167. Lewis Hamilton is ninepoints further adrift infifth.

Sebastian Vettel fought back to win Red Bull's first Italian Grand Prix at theMonza circuit and move closer to his second world title.

Button celebrates his 2nd place

Cast as the underdogs by allbar the team and itsinspirational captain NigelEdwards, the home sideupset the formbook andsecured their 14-12 win withthree matches still on thecourse. It is also only theeighth occasion the teamhave won in the history ofthe matches.

"Fantastic, they are a veryspecial bunch of guys," saida jubilant Edwards. "Ourpreparation and desire towin probably gave us theedge. I told my players thatthey all deserved to be here."

Great Britain and Irelandtook a 10½-5½ lead intoSunday's final singles butdespite holding the initiative, many of the matches still had

the potential to swing eitherway. The nervy situationmeant that Jack Senior'sbrilliant birdie putt from thefront of the final green tosnatch an unlikely halfagainst Nathan Smith wascrucial. "Emotions were seriously

running high when it wentinto the hole," Senioradmitted after taking his sideto within one-and-a-halfpoints of the decisive 13½needed for victory.

The foundations for thisastonishing victory over aUSA side containing the topfour amateurs in the worldwere laid in a windsweptmorning session when GreatBritain and Ireland camewithin a putt of a cleansweep of foursome victories.

rilling opener to new seasonWhat a fantastic start to theseason with a one ball tospare win for Costa delCricket Club team A,skippered by Phil Nuttall, against team B captained byTony Crooks. Phil Nuttallwon the toss and elected tofield, hoping that thecombination of his bowlingcompliment and the heat ofthe September sun would doits worst in the afternoon.

However Team B set off ata cracking pace with PeterWinter and Gavin Flaxmanplundering anything loose. The opening pair racked up80 runs in the first 11 oversbefore Peter(32) was bowledthrough a combination ofdehydration and lack ofconcentration. Gavin(with34) fell shortly afterwardswhich gave way to apartnership of a verystubborn innings by CliveLloyd lookalike DeryckFraser and guestingCombined Colleges SkipperNushan Alwis. Nush showedoff his batting skills with aquickfire 50 before retiring.Tristan Cooper anddebutant Mark Wilkinsoncontinued the scoring rateclosing on 200/8 off the 35overs. This appeared to be anunassailable target and afterlunch Team B looked as

though the result was aformality when Team A wereon 54/5 – with evergreenAlan Harris having to retirethrough dehydration andlack of match fitness!

However the show wasn'tover, Azrad taking up thegauntlet before beingbowled. Re-enter Alan Harriswho, after a short siesta, continued where he left offtaking the bowling apart, despatching anything shortof a length to the boundary,Phil Nuttall supported Alanand contributed at the otherend magnificently

This fantastic match wentright to the wire with AlanHarris appropriately hittingthe penultimate ball to theboundary for a three-runvictory. This was a superb

game of cricket played in thetrue spirit of the game andthe club ethos ofCRICKET4ALL.

Four of the 22 were underthe age of 16, two were buspass and beyond, and theteams encompassed sixdifferent nationalities – so areal mix of the cricketinghuman race!

Next Costa del Sol game25th September. Next weekFuengirola v CombinedColleges.

Andrea Calvert has becomethe first player to win twicein the Superbowl SummerPro-Am tournaments andmust now play as a“professional” in any futureevents.

The latest event held onSaturday afternoon, 3rdSeptember was wellattended as always.Although there were no first-time bowlers this time theage of the novice bowlersremained very encouragingfor the future of bowls on thecoast.

Andrea and her partner, the ever popular Keith StJohn (The Saint) got off to aflyer with a big win in theirfirst game. Russell Borleyand John Forrest respondedwith a big win in the secondround leaving them just onepoint behind Andrea andthe Saint, and by sheer co-incidence they were drawnto play each other in the finalround of games. The gamebetween these two pairs wasextremely close, the Saintdrawing the winning shotwith his last bowl of thegame. The result of this tightgame was to allow AndySalmon and Joyce Boyle tocome through with a big winof their own to tie withAndrea and the Saint at the

top of the leader boardresulting in the second playoff of the summer, whichwent down to the last bowlbefore Andrea could claimher second crown.

These events are runprincipally for the benefit ofthe novice bowler and havedeveloped a momentum of

their own. The first one heldback in June was very much“suck it and see” as theformat had never been triedbefore. However, it proved tobe so popular more eventswere planned and the Clubhave now decided to hold a“finals day” on Saturday 1stOctober when all thewinners will be invited back. The events are mainly

played for fun and consist ofthree short games withbreaks for refreshmentsfollowed by a BBQ andmusic.

Club owner Jamie Alipresented the prizes andexpressed his delight at thesuccess of the Pro-Amconcept.

The next events will be at3pm on Saturdays 10th 17thSeptember.

Any non-bowlersinterested in playing infuture events should contactthe club on 952 81 77 13 orvisit the Club in the famousAloha (golf) Valley in NuevaAndalucia.

Womens finalSamantha Stosur enduredthe longest women’s matchin tournament history inone round and the longesttie breaker in another onher way to the UnitedStates Open final. All theadversity — the toughopponents and Tropical

Storms Irene and Lee —steeled Stosur for the worststorm she would have toweather on the way to herfirst Grand Slam title:another Open outburst bythe three-time championSerena Williams. Facingbreak point at 30-40,Williams sent an apparentforehand winner to Stosur’sbackhand side. “Come on!”Williams screamed asStosur stabbed at the ball, making contact. Thecontact brought into playthe hindrance rule. Underthe rule, if the distraction isunintentional, like a hatblowing off a player’s head,or a scream from a beesting, the point is replayed. If the action is deliberate, asin this case, the point isawarded to the opponent.

In Sunday’s final, Stosurdefeated Williams, 6-2, 6-3,for her first majorchampionship. Shebecame the first Australianwoman to win a major titlesince Evonne GoolagongCawley at Wimbledon in1980. “I can’t actually believe I
