The New Haven Open at Yale presented by First Niagara is a professional women’s tennis event on the worldwide WTA Tour and the culmination of the US Open Series linking 10 North American tournaments to the US Open in New York. With a rich history for presenting world class tennis since 1998, the tournament is a signature event in the state of Connecticut and the region.

More than just a tennis tournament, the New Haven Open at Yale is a leading example of leveraging a large-scale international sporting event to generate $26 million in regional economic impact and to build community pride, spirit and engagement, especially among youth.

The tournament’s strategy has always been to leverage the excitement and power of professional tennis to build interest and participation at the community level. The tournament, along with its 501(c)3 New Haven Youth Tennis & Education, partners with New Haven Parks & Rec and the USTA year round to provide tennis lessons, life skills, and leadership development programming. Below is a partial list of programs and events, all of which teach youth the importance of fitness, education, and making healthy choices in their lives. In addition, the tournament hosts the First Niagara Family Classic, a year-round parent/child competition that encourages a healthy, active lifestyle for families with nearly 100 tennis events throughout seven states in New England and New York over eight months, culminating at the New Haven Open in August.

• Of the 39 women's-only WTA tournaments in the world, New Haven Open at Yale is the third highest-attended.

• The 2011 event attracted 55,000+ spectators (despite being impacted by an earthquake and a hurricane).

Aetna FitZone – Interactive area with free tennis clinics, games, contests and

prizes for kids and adults of all ages. Daily Aetna Fitness Clinics featured Zumba, 10 & Under Tennis and Cardio Tennis all week long.

Autograph Sessions – Multiple player autograph sessions each day provide an

opportunity for fans to get up close and personal with some of the world’s top tennis stars.

Entertainment Stage – Features player interviews each afternoon and live

music nightly.

Food Court & Michelob ULTRA Bar – Provides a comfortable setting to take

a break from the on-court action and socialize with friends, family, or clients.

Breast Cancer Awareness Initiative – In 2011, the tournament raised funds

and awareness for breast cancer through powerful on-site initiatives including the CYBEX Pink Ribbon Run (pictured left) and Yale-New Haven Mobile Mammography van. In its first year, $25,000 was raised for the Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven and Susan G. Komen Connecticut affiliate.

In its fifth year, the New Haven Food & Wine Festival is a celebration of New Haven’s award-winning and international restaurants. The stylish and highly anticipated events provide consumers with an enjoyable venue to interact, socialize, and sample an array of gourmet cuisine, wine, and cocktails. New events are introduced yearly, past events have included:

Grand Tasting – A sell-out event, the Grand Tasting showcased sweet and savory dishes from more than 20 of New Haven’s top restaurants under one tent. Local chefs offered a variety of menu items alongside an international wine tasting.

BBQ Bash – Featured live music and BBQ-inspired cuisine served up by chefs from eight New Haven restaurants.

Vineyard Vines Ladies Day Luncheon & Fashion Show – Catering to foodies and fashionistas, this lively luncheon featured a tasty menu and a fashion show that debuted the hottest preppy styles.
