THE COLLECT - Third Sunday in Lent (Page 164 BCP)
Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us
both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all
adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault
and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: In our Old Testament story the people are at the point
of rebellion because they are without water in the wilderness.
1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Margo Clarke 9:15a.m. - Michael Hoyte
FIRSTFIRSTFIRSTFIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): Exodus 17:1-7
All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by
stages, according to the commandment of the LORD, and camped at Rephidim; but there
was no water for the people to drink. Therefore the people found fault with Moses, and
said, "Give us water to drink." And Moses said to them, "Why do you find fault with me?
Why do you put the LORD to the proof?" But the people thirsted there for water, and the
people murmured against Moses, and said, "Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill
us and our children and our cattle with thirst?" So Moses cried to the LORD, "What shall
I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me." And the LORD said to Moses,
"Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your
hand the rod with which you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there
on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, that the
people may drink." And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called
the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the faultfinding of the children of
Israel, and because they put the LORD to the proof by saying, "Is the LORD among us or
not?"
REFLECTION THE PSALM: A call to worship the Lord our God, with a warning not
to put God to the challenge.
INTROIT HYMN - 861 Supp
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame.
But wholly lean on Jesus’ Name.
Refrain:
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils his lovely face,
I rest on his unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil.
His oath, his covenant, and blood
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way
He then is all my hope and stay.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 95 (7:30a.m. - page 593 BCP)
1. O COME, let us sing unto the Lord : let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our
salvation.
2. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving : and shew ourselves glad in him
with psalms.
3. For the Lord is a great God : and a great King above all gods.
4. In his hand are all the corners of the earth : and the strength of the hills is his also.
5. The sea is his, and he made it : and his hands prepared the dry land.
6. O come, let us worship and fall down : and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
7. For he is the Lord our God : and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his
hand.
8. To-day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts : as in the provocation, and as
in the day of temptation in the wilderness.
9. When your fathers tempted me : proved me, and saw my works.
10. Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said : It is a people that do err
in their hearts, for they have not known my ways;
11. Unto whom I sware in my wrath : that they should not enter into my rest.
REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: In this reading Paul bids the disciples to rejoice in
the reconciliation and hope which are theirs because of the sacrifice of Christ on be-
half of sinners.
2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Sandra Waterman 9:15a.m. - Mothers’ Union
SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): Romans 5:1-11
Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Through him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in
our hope of sharing the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings,
knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and char-
acter produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been
poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us. While we were
still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Why, one will hardly die for a
righteous man -- though perhaps for a good man one will dare even to die. But God shows
his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we
are now justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of
God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son,
much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. Not only so, but we
also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received
our reconciliation.
GRADUAL HYMN - 874 Supp
The Lord’s our Rock, in Him we hide:
A shelter in the time of storm!
Secure whatever ill betide:
A shelter in the time of storm!
Oh, Jesus is a rock in a weary land!
A weary land, a weary land;
Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A shelter in the time of storm!
A shade by day, defence by night:
A shelter in the time of storm!
No fears alarm, no foes affright:
A shelter in the time of storm!
The raging storms may round us beat:
A shelter in the time of storm!
We’ll never leave our safe retreat,
A shelter in the time of storm!
O Rock Divine, O Refuge dear:
A shelter in the time of storm!
Be thou our helper ever near,
A shelter in the time of storm!

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: Our Gospel tells the story of Jesus’ meeting with the
Samaritan woman by Jacob’s well. The narrative is rich with themes. Jesus is willing to
break with custom in order to talk with one who is both a woman and a foreigner. During
an interval in the story, Jesus speaks with his disciples concerning his true food and
drink, and tells them that the time of harvesting for eternal life is at hand. True worship of
God is tied to no place. He himself offers a living water which wells up to eternal life. The
woman learns that Jesus is the expected Messiah, and later others from the town come to
believe that he is the world’s Saviour.
THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: John 4:5-26, (27-38) 39-42
Jesus came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son
Joseph. Jacob's well was there, and so Jesus, wearied as he was with his journey, sat down
beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. There came a woman of Samaria to draw
water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." For his disciples had gone away into the city
to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of
me, a woman of Samaria?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered
her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, `Give me a drink,'
you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." The woman said
to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that
living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from
it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?" Jesus said to her, "Every one who drinks of this
water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never
thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to
eternal life." The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor
come here to draw." Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." The
woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, `I
have no husband'; for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not
your husband; this you said truly." The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a
prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and you say that in Jerusalem is the
place where men ought to worship." Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is
coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You
worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the
Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the
Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. God is spirit, and
those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." The woman said to him, "I
know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when he comes, he will show us
all things." Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am he." [Just then his disciples came.
They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but none said, "What do you wish?" or,
"Why are you talking with her?" So the woman left her water jar, and went away into the
city, and said to the people, "Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be
the Christ?" They went out of the city and were coming to him. Meanwhile the disciples
besought him, saying, "Rabbi, eat." But he said to them, "I have food to eat of which you
do not know." So the disciples said to one another, "Has any one brought him food?"
Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his
work. Do you not say, `There are yet four months, then comes the harvest'? I tell you, lift
up your eyes, and see how the fields are already white for harvest. He who reaps receives
wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For
here the saying holds true, `One sows and another reaps.' I sent you to reap that for which
you did not labor; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor."] Many
Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me

Kaye Springer Taylor Walcott and all who request our prayers
all that I ever did." So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with
them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They
said to the woman, "It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for we have
heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world."

Bidding Prayer
Let us pray to God who knows the secrets of all hearts.
May the Lord who gives the living water to all who come to him in faith, give grace to the
Church, so to drink of that water that she may bring life to many…May he lift our eyes to
see where the time is ripe for harvest and seek to be worthy labourers for the coming of
the Kingdom.
Give the word of truth to the world, where there is strife between nations and races, where
faiths can be hostile and gender divisive…May honesty overcome all shame and deceit,
so that wrongs that have been hidden may be brought to light and healed.
May our Lord be with us in our homes and in all the homes of this community, to teach us
by his word, to sustain us with the food of loving obedience and lead us to worship in
spirit and in truth…Make us honest in our dealings with one another and repentant for our
sins.
Have mercy on all whose lives are distressed by broken relationships, by
misunderstandings that have turned to bitterness, by the suppressed anxiety that eats away
the heart…May those who have found only partial truth be led into the right way, to know
and to perform the will of God.
May those who have passed from this world and now drink of the living water that flows
from the throne of God, rejoice in the eternal worship which is beyond all place and
time…May we by grace come to the same rejoicing.
We pray in the name of Christ, the Messiah of all who worship in the spirit and truth.
Amen.

RECESSIONAL HYMN - 764 A&M
RESCUE the perishing, Care for the dying,
Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave;
Weep o’er the erring one, Lift up the fallen,
Tell them of Jesus the mighty to save.
Rescue the perishing, Care for the dymg;
Jesus is merciful, Jesus will save.
Though they are slighting Him, Still He is
waiting,
Waiting the penitent child to receive;
Plead with them earnestly, Plead with them
gently;
He will forgive if they only believe.
Down in the human heart, Crush’d by the
tempter,
Feelings lie buried that grace can restore;
Touch’d by a loving heart, Waken’d by
kindness,
Chords that were broken will vibrate once
more.
Rescue the perishing; Duty demands it;
Strength for thy labour the Lord will
provide:
Back to the narrow way Patiently win them;
Tell the poor wand’rer a Saviour has died.

Smile: Robert goes golfing every Saturday. One Saturday, he comes home three hours
late. His wife asks him, "What took you so long?" The guy says, "That was the worst
game of golf I've ever had. We got up to the first tee, and Charlie hit a hole-in-one and
immediately dropped dead of a heart attack." The guy's wife says, "That's terrible!" The
guy says, "I know. Then, for the rest of the game, it was hit the ball, drag Charlie, hit the
ball, drag Charlie, hit the ball, drag Charlie. . ."
Moral Stories: To Let Go
To let go does not mean to stop caring, it means I can’t do it for someone else.
To let go is not to cut myself off, it’s the realization that I can’t control another.
To let go is not to enable, but to allow learning from natural consequences.
To let go is to admit powerlessness, which means the outcome is not in my hands.
To let go is not to try to change or blame another, it’s to make the most of myself.
To let go is not to care for, but to care about.
To let go is not to fix, but to be supportive.
To let go is not to judge, but to allow another to be a human being.
To let go is not to be in the middle arranging all the outcomes, but to allow others to af-
fect their own destinies.
To let go is not to be protective, it’s to permit another to face reality.
To let go is not to criticize, or regulate anyone, but to try to become what I dream I can
do.
To let go is to fear less, and to love more. Author Unknown
Moral Stories: Believe in Yourself
There may be days when you get up in the morning and things aren’t the way you had
hoped they would be.
That’s when you have to tell yourself that things will get better. There are times when
people disappoint you and let you down.
But those are the times when you must remind yourself to trust your own judgments and
opinions, to keep your life focused on believing in yourself.
There will be challenges to face and changes to make in your life, and it is up to you to
accept them.
Constantly keep yourself headed in the right direction for you. It may not be easy at
times, but in those times of struggle you will find a stronger sense of who you are.
So when the days come that are filled with frustration and unexpected responsibilities,
remember to believe in yourself and all you want your life to be.
Because the challenges and changes will only help you to find the goals that you know
are meant to come true for you.
Keep Believing in Yourself! Author Unknown
