THE COLLECT - Second Sunday in Lent (Page 163 BCP)
O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray
from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace
and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son: who with you
and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: The opening lesson is the story of God’s call of
Abraham (who was then known as Abram) to leave his own country and become the
father of a great nation.
1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Janice Hassig 9:15a.m. - Anthony Greaves
FIRSTFIRSTFIRSTFIRST LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): LESSON: (OLD TESTAMENT): Genesis 12:1-8
The Lord said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house
to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless
you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who
bless you, and him who curses you I will curse; and by you all the families of the earth
shall bless themselves." So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with
him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. And Abram took
Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions which they had gath-
ered, and the persons that they had gotten in Haran; and they set forth to go to the land of
Canaan. When they had come to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land to
the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the
land. Then the Lord appeared to Abram, and said, "To your descendants I will give this
land." So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. Thence he removed
to the mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai
on the east; and there he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.
REFLECTION THE PSALM: Joyful are the people who trust in the Lord. From
heaven God sees all who dwell on the earth.
INTROIT HYMN - 951 Supp
O let the power fall on me, my Lord
Let the power fall on me
O let the power from heaven fall on me
Let the power fall on me.
For we want power to live as one, yes Lord
We want power to live as one
So as we pray and intercede for some
May the Spirit make us one.
Send us the promise Comforter, O Christ
Send us the promise Comforter,
And may our hearts be filled with love, O
Christ
When the Spirit comes like a dove.
Give us the power here and now, O Christ,
Please for the power here and now
Send us the power of grace and peace and
love
Send us the power of peace and love.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 33:12 - to the end (7:30a.m. - page 506 BCP)
12. Blessed are the people, whose God is the Lord Jehovah : and blessed are the folk, that
he hath chosen to him to be his inheritance.
13. The Lord looked down from heaven, and beheld all the children of men : from the
habitation of his dwelling he considereth all them that dwell on the earth.
14. He fashioneth all the hearts of them : and understandeth all their works.
15. There is no king that can be saved by the multitude of an host : neither is any mighty
man delivered by much strength.
16. A horse is counted but a vain thing to save a man : neither shall he deliver any man by
his great strength.
17. Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him : and upon them that put their
trust in his mercy.
18. To deliver their soul from death : and to feed them in the time of dearth.
19. Our soul hath patiently tarried for the Lord : for he is our help and our shield.
20. For our heart shall rejoice in him : because we have hoped in his holy Name.
21. Let thy merciful kindness, O Lord, be upon us : like as we do put our trust in thee.
REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: In this reading Paul describes Abraham as a man
who through faith found a right relationship with God. He is the father of all who trust
in the Lord.
2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - June Haynes 9:15a.m. - Church Army
SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): SECOND LESSON (EPISTLE): Romans 4:1-5(6-12)13-17
What then shall we say about Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For if
Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before
God. For what does the scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to
him as righteousness." Now to one who works, his wages are not reckoned as a gift but as
his due. And to one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly, his faith
is reckoned as righteousness. [So also David pronounces a blessing upon the man to
whom God reckons righteousness apart from works: "Blessed are those whose iniquities
are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the man against whom the Lord will
not reckon his sin." Is this blessing pronounced only upon the circumcised, or also upon
the uncircumcised? We say that faith was reckoned to Abraham as righteousness. How
then was it reckoned to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not
after, but before he was circumcised. He received circumcision as a sign or seal of the
righteousness which he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to
make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised and who thus have
righteousness reckoned to them, and likewise the father of the circumcised who are not
merely circumcised but also follow the example of the faith which our father Abraham
had before he was circumcised.] The promise to Abraham and his descendants, that they
should inherit the world, did not come through the law but through the righteousness of
faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise
is void. For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. That
is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed
to all his descendants -- not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share
the faith of Abraham, for he is the father of us all, as it is written, "I have made you the
father of many nations" -- in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life
to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.

GRADUAL HYMN - 953 Supp
The Gospel bells are ringing
Over land, from sea to sea
Blessed news of free salvation
Do they offer you and me.
“For God so loved the world
That His only son He gave
Whosoe’er believeth in Him
Everlasting life shall have.”
Gospel bells, how they ring;
Over the land from sea to sea
Gospel bells freely bring
Blessed news to you and me.
The Gospel bells invite us
To a feast prepared for all;
Do not slight the invitation,
Nor reject the gracious call.
“I am the bread of life
Eat of me, thou hungry soul,
Though your sins be red as crimson
They shall be as white as wool.”
The Gospel bells give warning
As they sound from day to day
Of the fate which doth await them
Who forever will delay.
“Escape thou for thy life;
Tarry not in all the plain,
Nor behind thee look, oh, never,
Least thou be consumed in pain.”
The Gospel bells are joyful,
As they echo far and wide,
Bearing notes of perfect pardon,
Through a Saviour crucified.
“Good tidings of great joy
To all people do I bring
Unto you is born a Saviour,
Which is Christ the Lord and King.”
REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: In our Gospel story, Nicodemus, one of the Pharisees,
comes during the night to talk with Jesus. Nicodemus is a figure used by the evangelist
to represent a type of person who wants to believe but has difficulty understanding
spiritual realities. Jesus tells him that individuals cannot enter the kingdom of God unless
they are born anew through water and the Spirit, the inner meaning of the passage partly
turns on the facts that “born anew” can also be understood as “born from on high” and
that the same Greek word means both wind and spirit. Jesus then tells Nicodemus of the
Son of Man come down from heaven who will be lifted up, both on the cross to die for the
world and to return to heaven in glory.
THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: John 3:1-17
There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came
to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from
God; for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him." Jesus answered
him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of
God." Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a
second time into his mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to
you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That
which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not
marvel that I said to you, `You must be born anew.' The wind blows where it wills, and
you hear the sound of it, but you do not know whence it comes or whither it goes; so it is
with every one who is born of the Spirit." Nicodemus said to him, "How can this
be?" Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand
this? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we
have seen; but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you earthly things and you
do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended
into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man. And as Moses lifted up
the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes
in him may have eternal life." For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that
5
whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into
the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

Bidding Prayer
In the power of the Spirit, let us pray to God.
Renew your Church by the working of the Holy Spirit…In quiet and humble rebirth may
your people find new strength as your body in the world and show the way of salvation to
all seek.
God who loved the world even to sending the Son to be its Saviour, come among us for
the healing of conflict between nations and races…Draw those who hold power and
influence into the presence of Christ, to know his love and to make it their own in all
their dealings.
Lift up our eyes to see the grace of God in all around us…Lift up our hearts to be his
messengers to our families and friends and in our community…Help us to find in what is
familiar the new birth of his love.
Have mercy on those who have lost their way and no longer seek to know God and to do
his will…May the life-governing Spirit bring healing to the sick, and strength to those
who minister to them.
May the souls of those who have died be gloriously born again to the eternal life where
love is complete and the night of seeking turns to the perfect day…May we too in our
time be born again in glory.
We pray in the name of Christ, lifted up in pain and in triumph for our sake. Amen.

Smile: A man joined a big Multi National Company as a trainee. On his first day, he
dialed the pantry and shouted into the phone, "Get me a coffee, quickly!" The voice from
the other side responded, "You fool you've dialed the wrong extension! Do you know
who you're talking to, dumbo?" "No," replied the trainee. "It's the Managing Director of
the company, you fool!" The trainee shouted back, "And do you know who YOU are
talking to, you fool?" "No." replied the Managing Director indignantly. "Good!" replied
the trainee and put down the phone.
Moral Stories: The Greatest Gift is Love
A woman came out of her house and saw 3 old men with long white beards sitting in her
front yard. She did not recognize them.
She said, “I don’t think I know you, but you must be hungry. Please come in and have
something to eat.”
“Is the man of the house home?”, they asked.
“No”, she said. “He’s out.”
“Then we cannot come in”, they replied. In the evening when her husband came home,
she told him what had happened.
“Go tell them I am home and invite them in!” The woman went out and invited the men
in. “We do not go into a House together,” they replied.
“Why is that?” she wanted to know. One of the old men explained: “His name is Wealth,”
he said pointing to one of his friends, and said pointing to another one, “He is Success,
and I am Love.” Then he added, “Now go in and discuss with your husband which one of
us you want in your home.”
The woman went in and told her husband what was said. Her husband was overjoyed.
“How nice!!”, he said. “Since that is the case, let us invite Wealth. Let him come and fill
our home with wealth!”
His wife disagreed. “My dear, why don’t we invite Success?”
Their daughter-in-law was listening from the other corner of the house. She jumped in
with her own suggestion: “Would it not be better to invite Love? Our home will then be
filled with love!”
“Let us heed our daughter-in-law’s advice,” said the husband to his wife. “Go out and
invite Love to be our guest.”
The woman went out and asked the 3 old men, “Which one of you is Love? Please come
in and be our guest.” Love got up and started walking toward the house. The other 2 also
got up and followed him. Surprised, the lady asked Wealth and Success: “I only invited
Love, Why are you coming in?”
The old men replied together: “If you had invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us
would’ve stayed out, but since you invited Love, wherever He goes, we go with him.
Wherever there is Love, there is also Wealth and Success!”
