As it is lit, the minister may say words similar to: "The light of Christ, rising in Glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds." The minister will trace the symbols (mentioned above) on the Paschal candle, saying words similar to: "Christ, yesterday and today, the beginning and the end, Alpha and Omega. all time belongs to Him and all the ages; to Him be glory and power through every age for ever. Amen." The candle remains lit at all worship services throughout Easter Season (or in some tradi- tions until Ascension Day, when it is extinguished just after the Gospel), during which time it is located in the Sanctuary close to the altar. After the Easter season, it is frequently placed near the baptismal font. The Paschal candle is also lit during baptisms to signify the Holy Spirit and fire that John the Baptist promised to those who were baptised in Christ. Know Your Church: THE PASCHAL CANDLE

The Paschal candle is a large, white candle used at liturgy in the Western Rites of Christianity. A new Paschal candle is blessed and lit every year at Easter, and is used throughout the Paschal season which is during Easter and then throughout the year on special occasions, such as baptism and funerals.

The word paschal is derived from the Hebrew word for Passover “Pesach” and relates to the Paschal Mystery of salvation. The Christian Church connected this word with the Death and Resurrection of Jesus which took place at the time of the Jewish Passover. “Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us, therefore let us keep the Feast” (1 Corinthians

5:7). The tall white candle in many ways signifies the Divine pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night that lead the Israelites in their Exodus from slavery in Egypt

The flame of the Paschal candle symbolizes the Risen Christ as light of the world and his presence in the midst of his people. The Paschal candle is sometimes referred to as the "Easter candle" or the "Christ candle." It has five marks containing incense grains representing the five wounds of Jesus: The Alpha and Omega, Christ the beginning and the end and the year marked on the wax indicate that Christ is the Lord of all times.

For churches that celebrate the Easter Vigil the ceremonial lighting of the Paschal candle is one of the most solemn moments of the service. On Maundy Thursday of the same week the entire church is darkened by extinguishing all candles and lamps. This represents the darkness of a world without God. At the opening of the Easter Vigil a "new fire" is lit and blessed. The Paschal candle is the first candle to be lit with a flame from this sacred fire, representing the light of Christ coming into the world. This represents the risen Christ, as a symbol of light (life) dispelling darkness (death). As it is lit, the minister may say words similar to: "The light of Christ, rising in Glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds."

The minister will trace the symbols (mentioned above) on the Paschal candle, saying words similar to: "Christ, yesterday and today, the beginning and the end, Alpha and Omega. all time belongs to Him and all the ages; to Him be glory and power through every age for ever. Amen."

The candle remains lit at all worship services throughout Easter Season (or in some tradi-tions until Ascension Day, when it is extinguished just after the Gospel), during which time it is located in the Sanctuary close to the altar. After the Easter season, it is frequently placed near the baptismal font. The Paschal candle is also lit during baptisms to signify the Holy Spirit and fire that John the Baptist promised to those who were baptised in Christ.

Easter Day (Page 166 - 167 BCP) O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

or this

O God, who made this most holy night to shine with the glory of the Lord's resurrection: Stir up in your Church that Spirit of adoption which is given to us in Baptism, that we, being renewed both in body and mind, may worship you in sincerity and truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord’s resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by life-giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Easter Message 2013

In each festival of the Church, is a great message that can teach us something about our relationship with God and our responsibility for the world. The festival of Easter contains one of the most powerful of these messages. It is a message about life. It tells of the power of God to renew and transform lives. It teaches us that this power transformed the death of Jesus into resurrection and life. The power of God, changed the pessimism and fear of Good Friday, which had gripped the lives of the friends of Jesus, into the hope of Easter. Today, on Easter day the Church, joins with those friends of Jesus and celebrates life and proclaims hope .The church proclaims that the conditions of pain and death, which can overwhelm us in this world, have been conquered by God, through the resurrection of Jesus Our Lord. This is the Easter hope with which we live as Christians. It helps us to respond to the conditions of life that can make us pessimistic and depressed. At this time when there is a lot of pessimism about the future, the Christian, standing firmly on the message of Easter does not give up hope. We proclaim that there can be, and will be better times, and with God’s grace, we work towards making this a reality. When we encounter persons who are being battered by the forces of life and are down and out, we should share our Easter faith and tell of God’s presence and power to conquer the things that can destroy hope. On this Easter day let us recommit ourselves to be persons who live and share the hope that we celebrate today. This is not simply a wish for better days, but a conviction that with God’s power and guidance we can help someone to see a better tomorrow. Do you know someone who needs this help right now? Be for them a beacon of Easter hope. Help them to see that God is still at work for them. Share with them the central Christian conviction that no matter how awful may be our Good Friday experiences, there will be Easter and there is hope. May God grant you a blessed Easter day.

Your friend and Bishop, + John Barbados

Those who have shared in the experience of Christ’s resurrection are to set their minds

on the things that are above.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: Luke 24:1-10

Our Gospel tells how a group of women disciples first learn of Jesus’ resurrection.

Coming early in the morning to anoint the body, they find the stone covering of the tomb

rolled away and the body gone. No human eye sees Jesus rise, but now two angelic

figures appear and remind the troubled and frightened women that their Jesus had

predicted these things would happen to him. The women then report what they had heard

and seen to the apostles.

FIRST LESSON: FIRST LESSON: FIRST LESSON: FIRST LESSON: Acts 10:34-43

Peter opened his mouth and said: "Truly I perceive that God shows no partiality, but in every nation any one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the word which he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), the word which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. And we are witnesses to all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and made him manifest; not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that he is the one ordained by God to be judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness that every one who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

Easter Anthem

Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us : therefore let us keep the feast; Not with the old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness : but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 1 Cor 5:7

Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more : death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once : but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Like-wise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin : but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Rom 6:9

Christ is risen from the dead : and become the first-fruits of them that slept. For since by man came death : by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die : even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 1 Cor 15:20

SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: Colossians 3:1-4

Since you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: Luke 24:1-10

On the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise." And

Bidding Prayer

As disciples who know that Christ is risen, let us pray for the Church and for the world.

As your Church rejoices this day in the Resurrection of her Lord and Saviour, may her worship be reverent and her proclamation faithful…May every Christian soul respond in faith to the call of the Master and make haste to tell the good news.

Let the Easter hope be known in all the world…Give light to those who seek, assurance to those who doubt, and peace to all…May Christ be known as the only Lord, the only hope of the nations.

Be with our families and friends and all who share with us the wonderful day of Resurrec-tion…May the presence of Christ bring us close to those who are separated from us, in the knowledge that no distance can part us from his love.

Have mercy on those who stand at the open door of faith but are held back by doubt or fear of their unworthiness…Draw them in, that they may begin the new life that Christ has brought…Help and comfort those for whom suffering and sorrow mar the happiness of this day.

We pray for those who, having shared with Christ the death of the body, now share with him the eternal life of his Resurrection…May the promise that has been fulfilled in them be our hope in this world and our place in the world to come.

We pray in the name of Christ who conquered death that we might live for ever. Amen.

Dedication Prayer (To be said after the Post Communion Prayer) Lord, be with us this day and throughout the week; Within us to purify us; Above us to draw us up; Before us to lead us; Behind us to restrain us; Around us to protect us. Amen.

Let us pray for Health Care Providers in: Aids Hospices, Hospitals, Nursing Homes,
