Second Sunday in Lent (Page 163 BCP) O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son: who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson (Old Testament): Genesis 15: 1-12, 17-18

Our Old Testament lesson tells of the promise of many descendents and of a covenant

guaranteeing a homeland which God made with Abraham (who at the time was known

as Abram).

Psalm: 27

The psalmist expresses great trust and confidence in the Lord and asks always to be in

God’s presence.

Second Lesson (Epistle): Philippians 3:17-4:1 In this reading Paul warns of enemies of the cross of Christ and urges the disciples in

Philippi to stand firm in the hope of the glory to come.

The Gospel: Luke 13: (22-30) 31-35 Our Gospel tells of Jesus’ teaching on his way to Jerusalem his determination to fulfil

his prophetic destiny despite Herod’s threat. The reign of God cannot be easily entered.

Some claim of earlier association with the Lord is no guarantee of acceptance. On the

other hand, many from far away will find a place in the kingdom. Jesus then stresses his

struggle against the forces of evil and illness and his expectation concerning what will

happen to him in Jerusalem, the city that has killed so many prophets before him.

First Lesson (Old Testament): Genesis 15: 1-12, 17-18

After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, "Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great." But Abram said, "O Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?" And Abram said, "Behold, thou hast given me no offspring; and a slave born in my house will be my heir." And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, "This man shall not be your heir; your own son shall be your heir." And he brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them." Then he said to him, "So shall your descendants be." And he believed the LORD; and he reckoned it to him as righteousness. And he said to him, "I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess." But he said, "O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it?" He said to him, "Bring me a heifer three years old, a she-goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon." And he brought him all these, cut them in two, and laid each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. And when birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, Abram drove them away. As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram; and lo, a dread and great darkness fell upon him. When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates.”

Psalm: 27 (as found in Hymns Ancient & Modern)

1. THE Lord is my light and my salvation ; whom then shall I fear : the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid? 2. When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh : they stumbled and fell. 3. Though an host of men were laid against me, yet shall not my heart be afraid : and though there rose up war against me, yet will I put my trust in him. 4. One thing have I desired of the Lord, which I will require : even that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the fair beauty of the Lord, and to visit his temple. 5. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his tabernacle : yea, in the secret place of his dwelling shall he hide me, and set me up upon a rock of stone. 6. And now shall he lift up mine head : above mine enemies round about me. 7. Therefore will I offer in his dwelling an oblation with great gladness : I will sing, and speak praises unto the Lord. 8. Hearken unto my voice, O Lord, when I cry unto thee : have mercy upon me, and hear me. 9. My heart hath talked of thee, Seek ye my face : Thy face, Lord, will I seek. 10. O hide not thou thy face from me : nor cast thy servant away in displeasure. 11. Thou hast been my succour : leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation. 12. When my father and my mother forsake me : the Lord taketh me up. 13. Teach me the way, O Lord : and lead in the right way, because of mine enemies. 14. Deliver me not over into the will of mine adversaries : for there are false witnesses risen up against me, and such as speak wrong. 15. I should utterly have fainted : but that I believe verily to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. 16. O tarry thou the Lord’s leisure : be strong, and he shall comfort thine heart ; and put thou thy trust in the Lord.

Bidding Prayer

For protection from all perils and temptations, let us pray to the Lord.

Gather the Church under the wings of divine love and keep her in holiness…Bless her witness, and make her a sure refuse for all who seek salvation.

We pray for the world, for the great cities and the lonely villages, for every place where people find shelter and comfort…Preserve them in peace; guard them from danger, cast out all evil.

Bless our homes and make them places of joy for our families and welcome our guests…Bless all in this community who care for the deprived and the homeless. Have mercy on victims of violence and all who suffer for their faith…Visit and heal the sick in mind and all who are in the grip of evil power.

Receive into eternal life the souls who have ended their life on earth and have come home to be with their Lord…Lead us through the dangers of this world until we may rest under the wings of mercy.

We pray in the name of Christ whose love calls us to his side. Amen.

Second Lesson (Epistle): Philippians 3:17-4:1

Brethren, join in imitating me, and mark those who so live as you have an example in us. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is the belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our commonwealth is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power which enables him even to subject all things to himself. Therefore, my brethren, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.

The Gospel: Luke 13: (22-30) 31-35

[Jesus went on his way through towns and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. And some one said to him, "Lord, will those who are saved be few?" And he said to them, "Strive to enter by the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the householder has risen up and shut the door, you will begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, `Lord, open to us.' He will answer you, `I do not know where you come from.' Then you will begin to say, `We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.' But he will say, `I tell you, I do not know where you come from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity!' There you will weep and gnash your teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you yourselves thrust out. And men will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit at table in the kingdom of God. And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last."] At that very hour some Pharisees came, and said to him, "Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you." And he said to them, "Go and tell that fox, `Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course. Nevertheless I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.' O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, `Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'"
