Remembering the surrender of Japan

Nouméa's new Indian restaurant Le Taj opened on 20

August last in La Promenade complex at Anse Vata.

Relax in chic and subtly colourful comfort and revel in

the intoxicating tastes and aromas of Indian cuisine:

korma, Kashmiri or Madras style lamb curry, butter

chicken, tandoori chicken or chicken korma with

almonds, fish masala or king prawns in a ginger or

coconut sauce... spicy or mild, sinfully delectable! End

your meal with a delicious dessert: the dry fruit rava

kesari and the almond kulfi definitely get our vote... A

thousand and one savours for your delight!

A fascinating new exhibition is being hosted

by Nouméa's WW2 Museum to mark the 70th

anniversary of V-J Day, when Japan signed the

surrender document officially ending World War

II. Featuring attractive displays to appeal to all, the

3-part exhibition includes: a first section dedicated

to the signing of the instrument of surrender, a

second section on the representatives of the

allied powers involved in the Asia-Pacific War,

and a third section with models of planes which

circled over USS Missouri during the signing. The

exhibition will run until 13 December.

Get a real taste of the bush and head for Farino, just

1 ¼ hours from Nouméa, for the Candlenut Worm

Fair on Sunday 13 September! The Fair is held every

September in honour of this strange local delicacy...

fat wriggly worms which feed on the soft, damp wood

of the candlenut tree. Highlights include the Farino

farmers' market, grubbing for worms in the tree trunks

and a champion worm-eater contest, while local

celebrity chef Mamie Fogliani serves up luscious worm

specialities: plain, sautéed in pastis or with parsley

butter.

CULTURAL PASSPORT

The traditional welcome or "coutume" is a cornerstone

of Kanak culture. In its broadest sense the term

"coutume" refers to all the social rules that govern

everyday life but in the above instance it refers to the

traditional welcome ceremony, which is a mark of

respect (at the beginning of a meeting, on arrival on

tribal land, etc).

A simple gift is offered. Originally this took the form of

"Kanak" money, which was made from shells, flying

fox fur, etc. Today a gift of tobacco and money (around

F1,000) is laid upon a piece of material (known as "le

manou").

The person who is giving the gift explains his reasons

(to give thanks, make a request for authorisation to

enter tribal lands, etc). The person receiving the gift,

replies and touches the gift as a sign of acceptance.

The customary welcome
