Barcelona 12-15 May 2003
Background• CERN: European Organization for nuclear
research (particle accelerators) in Geneva, CH• ABB: Delivery and installation of a new Static
Var Compensator• The load:
– Particle accelerator Super Proton Synchrotron, SPS– 12-pulse thyristor power converters for accelerator
magnets– Heavily pulsating active and reactive power– Sensitive to harmonic distortion

Commissioning results• Load current: pulsating every 14 seconds
from zero to 4500 A
• Voltage response: Voltage fluctuations below +/- 0.3 % (0.75 % transiently),14 % without SVC
• Harmonic distortion: THD below0.75 %, 20 % without SVC

Conclusions
• Excellent performance possible with a classic SVC for sensitive and dynamic loads
• It is possible to accurately model the process in computer programs and to predict the system behaviour
