RECTOR’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, The transition to autumn is in the air. I felt the weather changing at the end of August—and the beautiful but cooler September days confirm that change is on the way. Change is also coming to Galilee. After nearly three and a half years of fruitful ministry, Fr. Kunes has accepted a call to Christ-Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church on Yonge’s Island, South Carolina. There he will serve as both the associate rector and also as a consultant to the developing prayer ministry of the diocesan camp and conference center. Fr. Rob’s transition out of Galilee is not unexpected; many clergy assistants have tenures of 2-3 years because places like Galilee are, in many ways, training grounds for new clergy: We receive from them their fresh enthusiasm right out of seminary—and they receive from us a place to spread their wings, test their training, and refine their skills. Fr. Rob has left his mark on our community. He has helped bring about a renewal of the prayer and healing ministry at Galilee—he has been instrumental in coalescing our annual men’s retreat—and, amidst the thousand unknown things that clergy do, Fr. Kunes has been a steady assistant to me. Fr. Rob leaves with our thanks. I’m excited about the new opportunities that await him and at the same time I will miss his company around Galilee. His final Sunday at Galilee will be October 13th, and that morning we will take an opportunity to celebrate, roast him a little, and say goodbye. Fr. Rob, Julie, Robert, Lillian, and Samuel will be missed—but I know that good things lie ahead for them. Please hold them in prayer as they transition—and may the Lord bless you and keep you. In Christ, Father Buchanan+

Help Wanted

Are you looking for something worthwhile to do? We are in need of a person to be the new coordinator for our Meals On Wheels ministry. Please contact Kelli Oliver at 469-1159 or email her at [email protected].

Dear Beloved Ones of Galilee,

In the opening chapter of the letter to the Philippians, Paul writes, “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you” (v. 3) and he continues, “It is right for me to feel thus about you all, because I hold you in my heart” (v. 7). Paul concludes the opening salutation with verse 8 “For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.” What we see is an emotional progression from head to heart to gut (literally splanchna).

The letter to the Philippians is, on one level, simply a thank you note for the gift they sent to Paul while in prison. Of course, it is much more than a simple thank you note. I have come to appreciate St. Paul’s insight into the emotional aspects of parish ministry. Head. Heart. Gut.

So today with joy and sadness, Julie and I write to you to thank you for the gift that you have been to us. We have been called to (and accepted) an Associate Priest position at Christ-St. Paul’s Church on Yonges Island, South Carolina. I will serve alongside of the Very Rev. Craige Borrett+ and share with him in every aspect of parish ministry. As part of this position, I will also serve (part-time) as the Chaplain to the newly created Prayer Center at St. Christopher’s Camp and Conference Center.

We are excited about many aspects of this move. Christ-St. Paul’s is a vibrant and growing church, with lots of young family and many developing programs. The Yonges Island/ Hollywood area is a rural area just south of Charleston with a multitude of tidal rivers and small family farms. While technically a rural area, Charleston is only 35 minutes away, and this is an up-and-coming area of growth. It goes without saying that my parents are thrilled to have the grandchildren less than an hour’s drive away!

Our children will attend a local charter school. The Lowcountry Leadership Charter School is a brand new school with teachers and families coming from all over the U.S. to participate in the unique opportunity it represents. One teacher is coming all the way from New Hampshire, and one family is moving from Arizona “just to be a part of this school”.

Our excitement about the future is tempered, however, by a very real sadness over leaving our Galilee family. Over the past three and a half years of sharing life with you, we have come to love you all as family. You have shared with us in the births and baptisms of our two youngest children. You have gently encouraged and supported me as I “grew up” into this new vocation known as the priesthood.

I will conclude where I began, with words from St. Paul’s letter to the Philippians, “And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, filled with the fruits of righteousness which come through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.”

We hold you in our hearts with the love of Jesus, Rob+ and Julie Kunes (Robert, Lillian, and Samuel)

OCTOBER BIRTHDAYS

I don’t know about you but the Fall is probably my most favorite time of the year. The temperature turns cool and the humidity takes a time out. The church season begins anew with new adult classes as well as the Children’s Sunday School. But here’s a special thought, come October the trees begin to shed their leaves, but they do it in such a spectacular show of colors that, as hard as I look, it is unequaled on canvas. Often times you’ll hear people refer to the Autumn of their life in a melancholy way but to look at the trees and the colors that are produced, Autumn should actually be a vibrant and uplifting time. As we enter the Fall and Winter seasons, focus on how God brings beauty and vibrant life to His kingdom so that we can endure the harshness of the winter months.

"[ Patience in Suffering ] Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how

the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the

autumn and spring rains."

from the RILEY’s Dear Galilee, Words cannot adequately express our gratefulness and love for our Galilee family. Your love, prayers, and support for Mark and I has been unwavering. 2013 has been a challenging year for us, but has proven once again that God is always faithful and our church family is always there! As a Chaplain, Mark completed Clinical Pastoral Education at Riverside Hospital this summer. While the long hours and traffic were taxing, his experiences were priceless. Mark returned to Virginia Theological Seminary on September 5 to start his second year. Along with his studies, Mark will be participating in Field Education. This is a two year program where Mark will serve in a Parish near Alexandria. My recovery from knee surgery is going well. Thank you so much for all the prayers, notes, calls, visits, food, and flowers. We love you all. Grace & Peace, Mark and Laura Riley

FROM CHANCO NEWSLETTER In continuing our series of articles of gratitude to our dedicated groups, we would like to thank the Chanco Board. As evaluation of summer camp 2013 commences, work to set the 2014 camp dates is finalized, heroic efforts continue to prepare the 2014 budget with great needs and small means, and Annual Fund fundraising efforts continue, it seems particularly appropriate this month to thank our volunteers who serve on the Chanco Board of Directors. The Chanco Board consists of laypersons and clergy from throughout our diocese as well as members of our diocesan staff. These individuals meet at least monthly in committees and/or in board meetings. Many travel at great lengths (one board member drives four hours each way from Chatham, Virginia!) to work together for Chanco's benefit. But board members do more than this. They volunteer in our restoration work events, they serve on teams for Cursillo, they serve our youth at diocesan youth events and Happening, they donate to our Annual Fund, they spread news of Chanco to their home parishes, they help market summer camp and retreats, and they help fundraise for restoration and our Annual Fund. These are just a few of the ways our board members support Chanco. They give time, energy and prayers to Chanco in abundant amounts throughout the year. All our board members who have served Chanco over the years have made a difference and have helped build Chanco's ministry to what it is today. We thank each and every one of you who has ever served on Chanco's Board of Directors. And specifically, we thank the 2013 Chanco Board of Directors. If you see the Rt. Rev. Holly Hollerith, Ms. Karen Witherspoon (President), the Rev. Canon Ed Tracy (Vice President), Mr. Tom Summerlin (Treasurer), Ms. Angie Lowry (Secretary), Ms. Ashley Scruggs, Mr. Mitch Parker, Mr. Jack Mace, the Rev. Henry McQueen, Mr. Doug Weymouth, Ms. Susan Boze, the Rev. Marguerite Alley, Mr. Ames Herbert, Mr. John Mills, the Rev. Ian McCarthy, Mr. Bill Simpson, Mr. Jim Raybourn, or Ms. Nancy LeCuyer Beach, please join us in thanking them for their invaluable service to Chanco.

NICARAGUA by Ruth, David, Stewart, and Kate Wilkins

Our family recently went to Nicaragua to work with orphans and children in need. It was an amazing experience and has made a lasting impact on our family. Ruth felt a call for our family to do some sort of mission trip and have our family see outside of "our world". This opportunity was presented to us at a time where we were already signed up for a lot, so we had to honor God's plan or our own. We talked and prayed and felt, as a family, that this was what we were supposed to do. Hillier Ignite and Orphan Network worked closely together to facilitate this trip to Nicaragua for a team of 18 people consisting of preteen, teens, and adults.

Immediately, upon our arrival at Hogar De Fey, the children and staff showered us with colored rice, smiles, love, and hugs. It was amazing to see the love that poured out of the children, especially when you consider the rejection that they have experienced in their lives. Most of these kids were living on the street with no parents and had been subject to unspeakable abuse. Some of the children had been brought to the orphanage because their parents could not care for them; many were abandoned.

Over the four days we spent there, our family had a chance to participate in different programs for the children and staff. One program focused on the older children to help them understand what a job is and what is required to get a job. We went to a grocery store and had a tour with lots of Q&A. Another day we went to a mall. Each day, the kids were responsible for writing down all the different jobs they identified, what was important about each, and what it took for the employees to get that job. After this, the children presented to the group what they learned and what job they would like to pursue when they were older. Most of these children have never seen anyone in their family have a good job and this was a powerful experience.

At the end of each day, we shared Roses and Thorns (highs and lows) with our team members, who shared their incredible insights and experiences. It was an awesome experience for our family. We all opened up and talked about things in that group setting that we would have never done at home. Stewart said she "loved going with our family because it was cool to be with your parents. You learn more, can stay focused, and you feel free to express your thoughts and feelings with family there." We all left Nicaragua with an awareness of how good we have it, how important is it to help and care for others, and how God works in and through us for his purposes and glory.

The other focus time was on the younger children and pouring love into them. Stewart, Kate, and Ruth played games, told stories, held and loved them, sung songs, and generally hung out and paid attention to them. Throughout our time, every member of our team connected with all the children, and many special connections that were made. We had a huge water fight between the gringos (Americans) and the kids and staff. We also took everyone in the orphanage to the beach. Many of the children had never seen the ocean. It was amazing to watch the children go from being afraid to get in the water to riding boogie boards on the waves. It was incredible to watch the older children as their confidence grew over the four-day period.

Our team had the chance to take the whole staff of Hogar De Fey out for a dinner. Some of our team stayed at the orphanage so the staff could all participate as the staff never gets a chance to be together without the children. During dinner, a lot of the staff got up and shared their appreciation to God, for our team, and for the support of Orphan Network and Hillier Ignite.

One final experience that our family had was to separate from the rest of the team and go with an Orphan Network staff member and visited a local church in the middle of a former refuge camp called Nueva Vida (New Life) which is a network of 7 churches that combined, serves one meal per day to over 1100 children . Through this church, Orphan Network helps them to distribute one meal per day to about 150 kids. Our family served food to the children, played with them, and toured the neighborhood, and church facilities. Basic requirements are that the meals are eaten at the church and that the children come to a worship service once a week. Orphan Network tracks metrics like malnutrition rates, church attendance (adults and children), lives given to Christ, and number of children fed. These local church initiatives are designed for American churches to come along side of these local Nicaraguan Churches to aid in the services provided to the children. An advanced initiative would also provide dental and health care resources through the local church.

Our family had a life-changing experience in Nicaragua and are looking forward to a return trip. We would love to talk and share more with anyone who's interested.

WARDEN’S REPORT

I am very excited about the message that Andy delivered to us on Sunday, September 8th about the mission of "Renewal. " Our focus as a Vestry this year is on being intentional as we seek to lead Galilee to a stronger position. We desire to bring glory to God through excellence in our services, our ministries, our communication, and our facilities. We challenged ourselves at the beginning of the year to look at Galilee with "fresh eyes" to identify those areas where we may have grown complacent, or where there may be opportunities for improvement. In walking around the Church you can see new front doors, some new windows, and an overall refreshing of our upstairs classrooms. We also have enhanced our youth programs, strengthened our prayer ministry, and expanded our women's Bible study -- all of which you can learn more about via the new video monitors that help optimize communication. These improvements are mostly external. While they are important (and certainly add to the life of our Church), Andy spoke to the internal work that is inspired by God and takes a level of personal commitment -- the renewing of our hearts and minds. Our prayer is that, as we pursue better communication, improved facilities, and exciting new programs for students and adults, we can also look inward and that we will, both as individuals and collectively, embrace the call to pursue spiritual renewal.

PASTORAL CARE "And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do..to love and serve you".

In a recent sermon, we heard how easy it is to be involved with Pastoral Care. We do everything from making phone calls to preparing meals, delivering flowers and visiting shut-ins. Tender Loving Carriers delivers meals 52 weeks out of the year and the Flower Power team takes flowers from the Altar to the sick and needy. Volunteers take communion to members who can no longer attend church and Phone Pals stays in touch with others. With a simple click of the mouse you can contact [email protected] and sign up to pray for members and friends in need of prayer on the Prayer Chain.

You can make a difference when you agree to love and serve. Contact the church or call Mary Lee Harris, Coordinator, at 428-0737, for more information.

PRAISE BAND -

Kevin Marshall

Kevin is a native of Virginia Beach, and began singing and playing guitar in local restaurants when he was 13 years old. Not long after, he began playing in churches and Young Life gatherings and found a deeper satisfaction when using his gifts in Christian ministry. Kevin spent his first two years in college studying classical guitar at James Madison University. Though he shifted his academic focus toward business management and information technology, he has continued to use his gifts in the church and various outreach ministries. As a result of participating in the Christian music scene since the “early years”, Kevin has witnessed a great deal of growth and change in contemporary Christian music. One of Kevin’s deepest desires is to use music in worship to encourage people to love God with all their heart, soul, strength and mind. Kevin and Cindy have two children, Chris and Hannah. When Kevin is not leading Galilee’s contemporary music team, he stays busy maintaining a business consulting practice helping corporate and nonprofit organizations with strategic planning and process improvement.

Parents! Would you like to see your children become Godly men and women who love Jesus? Would you like to know what they are learning in Sunday School? Would you love to be able to talk with your children about your faith, but don’t know where to start? Join us for a new adult education opportunity for parents called FUSION, part of the D6 curriculum. We’ve been using D6 in our Kindergarten through 5th Grade Sunday School classes since March, and have been both pleased and impressed with this material.

D6 stands for Deuteronomy 6:5-7 which commands dads and moms to take everyday opportunities to impress God’s Word upon the hearts of their children. Deuteronomy 6: 5-7 Moses says to the people of Israel, “5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all

your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” There are 168 hours a week, at best, 4 of them are spent at church. The church’s role in discipleship is to partner with parents to lead their children to spiritual maturity and vitality. Every age group in the D6 Curriculum studies the same biblical theme each week. The FUSION component equips parents to go home and teach their children further throughout the week. Look for it at Galilee this fall. Children’s Church Teachers & Helpers

Needed Imagine how exciting it would be to introduce a child to Adam and Eve or Daniel and the Lion’s Den for the first time. If you’d like to see the wonder on the children’s faces as you tell them God’s story, come help out with Children’s Church! No previous experience needed, and you can help on a rotating basis once a month or as often as you are able. Contact Katie Freer for more information.
