Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In our Gospel today we hear the story of a man who ran up to Jesus

and asked Him what he must do to reach eternal life.

Jesus said, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have,

and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then

come, follow me.”

It says the man went away sad because he had much.

We might cringe when we hear this story because it is sad — this

man was so close to becoming an active disciple of Jesus, but in-

stead turned away. We also might cringe because it could be deeply

applicable to our lives.

Jesus states that “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a

needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

One of the metaphors for the “eye of a needle” was a tight passage-

way into Jerusalem that people had to enter to get into the city. In

order for their camels to pass through, they had to remove whatever

the camel was carrying, only then, could they enter.

If we look at our own lives, we can most likely think of something

that we tightly carry with us. Maybe it is possessions — material

goods or money — like Jesus references in our Gospel. Or maybe it

is something less material — like status, pride, or control.

Jesus doesn’t want our stuff — our job promotions, our designer

house, or our bank account. He just wants us. So, we need to be

willing to strip those things from our lives in order to reach Him.

It might seem difficult, but the outcome will be more than we could

have ever imagined — peace on earth and treasure in heaven. www.TheCatholicSteward.com

PRAY FOR OUR BELOVED SICK Jose Sanchez Jr., Juanita de Luna, Domingo Medina, Rosa Isela

Golden, Orlando Zepeda, Elvira Chaires, Adrian

Salazar, Hector Manuel Perales III, Aurora Arroyo,

Almighty and Everlasting God, the eternal salvation of those who believe in You, hear us on behalf of Your servants who are sick, for whom we humbly beg the help of your mercy, so that, being restored to health, they may render thanks to you in your Church. Through Christ our Lord. Amen

SAFE ENVIRONMENT

To The Parishioners of San Agustin Cathedral:

The Diocese of Laredo is proactively engaged, through the education,

training, and screening of its clergy, lay personnel, and volunteers in

maintaining a safe environment for children and young persons in all its

church, facilities, and sponsored events. Please help us in our mission to

keep your children safe. The Church setting has a feeling of being a

“safe” area with people we know and some we don’t. We need to re-

member the Church is a public place just like the grocery store or depart-

ment store. Always accompany your child when on Church grounds

whether it be to the restrooms, our Blessed Mother’s Chapel, parking

areas, etc. It is San Agustin’s recommendation that you always accom-

pany your child(ren) that are middle age and under at all times. Please

do not allow them to walk round the facility by themselves prior to,

during or after Mass.

Regarding vehicles—please secure all items (cell phones, purses, lap

tops, packages, etc.) out of sight or take them with you.
