Day 1 Saturday 19th November

The tour started with flights from the UK to India

Day 2 Sunday 20th November

Our flight arrived in India on time, and we were welcomed at the airport by Dilan. We transferred to our hotel,

arriving at noon and after a brief introduction, we had a good lunch.

Day 3 Monday 21st November

We left Bangalore at 8am and on our way to Mysore, visited Ramangara Vulture Sanctuary. We spent about half

an hour here and spotted a single Indian Vulture sitting at the edge of the clip and few Egyptian Vultures flying

above us. We had great views of Yellow-throated Bulbul, which is quite a rare bird and endemic to southern

Indian forests. We also enjoyed watching a few more birds including Shikra, Green Bee-eater, Dusky Crag

Martin and Laughing Dove.

We reached Mysore at 12.45pm. After lunch we went to Mysore Palace, accompanied by a local guide who

explained the history of the Mysore Kingdom. Then we went to Chamundi hills where we had a short walk to

the Nandi Temple through a patch of forest, spotting a few birds such as Coppersmith Barbet, Blue-faced

Malkoha, White-browed Bulbul, Indian Grey Hornbill and Asian Paradise Flycatcher. At one point we had an

aerial view of Mysore.

Eventually, we returned to the hotel and later met in the restaurant to complete our species checklist.

Day 4 Tuesday 22nd November

At 8am we left Mysore for Kabini. En route we stopped in a few places to birdwatch. We spotted many birds

including Red Avadavat, Black-headed and Red-naped Ibis, Marsh Harrier and Lesser Whistling Duck.

We checked in to Kabini River Lodge at 11.30am and were briefed about the lodge and our activities over the

next few days. We went for an evening safari in a separate vehicle, and as we drove inside the park we started to

see groups of Spotted Deer. We had a great time watching many birds including White-bellied Drongo, Golden

Oriole, Plum-headed Parakeet and Eurasian Hoopoe. At one place we heard the alarm calls of Chital which

made us curious. After a short wait we saw a male Leopard crossing the road and everyone had a good view of it.

As it was getting dark we started to drive back and came across a Tiger, sitting on the road before he walked into

the bushes. We had great time spotting many birds and two big cats, Tiger and Leopard, on this safari.

Day 5 Wednesday 23rd November

It was a sunny day as we started our morning safari. We saw birds like Crested Serpent Eagle, woodpeckers and

parakeets, and we saw a group of Elephants too. We spotted a Changeable Hawk-Eagle eating a Junglefowl and

everyone had a good view. We heard Chital alarm calls, and as we reached the spot we all saw a Tiger crossing

the road. We hoped the Tiger would cross the road again, so we quickly drove around and were fortunate to see

him crossing a second time. We went to a backwater area and saw some waders. David spotted a Wild Dog on

the other side of the river, feasting on a Spotted Deer carcass, and we also noticed two White-rumped Vultures

sitting on a dry tree branch.

After breakfast, we did a bird walk around the resort and sightings included Chestnut-tailed Starling, Ashy

Drongo, White-browed Fantail and Brown Fish Owl.

In the late afternoon we went for a boat safari where we saw a herd of Elephants grazing by the riverside, a large

group of Chital, Mugger Crocodiles and a big flock of Bar-headed Geese. We also spotted Oriental Darter,

Osprey, Grey-headed Fish Eagle and Painted Stork.

In the evening we met at 7.30pm in the dining area and added a few new species to our checklist.

Day 6 Thursday 24th November

It was a misty morning and today we took different road, spotting Stripe-necked Mongoose and birds like White-

bellied Woodpecker, Heart-spotted Woodpecker, Streak-throated Woodpecker and Jungle Owlet.

After breakfast we walked around the resort area and saw Brown-capped Pygmy Woodpecker making its nest,

and everyone had great views of it. We also saw quite a few butterflies such as Striped Tiger, Blue Tiger and

Common Sailor, together with birds including Bluethroat, Indian Paradise Flycatcher and Asian Brown

Flycatcher.

In the early evening we went on a jeep safari and saw many birds. We reached a water tank and saw a few jeeps

were already waiting. A Tiger was spotted heading towards the waterhole. Our wait was fruitful as two Tigers

came to the waterhole and we enjoyed watching these wonderful cats for some time.

Later, back at the resort, we enjoyed watching a wildlife documentary and had a briefing by Dilan, after which we

retired to our rooms.

Day 7 Friday 25th November

This was our last safari in Kabini. At the backwaters we saw a group of Gaur crossing the river and walking

towards us. We had a close sighting of them and saw a new born calf too. Everyone enjoyed watching and

photographing them for some time. We also saw some new birds including Orange-headed Thrush, Himalayan

Buzzard, River Tern, Purple Heron and Brown Shrike.

After breakfast, we left Kabini River Lodge and headed to Ooty. Mid-way we stopped for lunch at Bandipura

Safari Lodge where we noticed a fig tree with fruits, and we enjoyed watching lots of Coppersmith Barbets and

Mynas, and White-cheeked Barbet.

We crossed Bandipur and entered Tamilnadu (Masinagudi forest). At a stop we saw Brahminy Starling, Lesser

Whitethroat and Bay-backed Shrike.

We reached Ooty at 5pm and after checking in, we had some time for a rest before gathering in the restaurant to

share our notes on the day’s sightings.

Day 8 Saturday 26th November

It was a clear day and we started by visiting the botanical gardens. As we entered, we spotted a Nilgiri Blue

Robin, an endemic bird to the northern Western Ghats, and everyone had a great view of it. After that we

explored more areas and saw Brown-breasted Flycatcher, Black-and-rufous Flycatcher and Grey-headed Canary-

flycatcher.

Then we went to Karin Hill Shola where we had good sightings of Nilgiri Langur, Malabar Giant Squirrels and

birds like Black-and-rufous Flycatcher and Green Warbler.

After lunch we visited a tea factory where we saw an exhibition and got to know the history behind Ooty and tea

estates. After that we observed the process of tea making.

Later we went to a nice patch of forest and saw a few birds like Bar-winged Flycatcher-shrike, Orange Minivet

and Indian Blackbird.

Day 9 Sunday 27th November

We left Ooty at 8.30am and went to Doddabetta in a local jeep to look for Nilgiri Laughingthrush, an endemic

bird to northern Western Ghats. We walked along the forest path and spotted a pair of Nilgiri Laughingthrushes,

and every one had great views. We also had good sightings of Nilgiri Blue Robin and Indian Blackbird.

We reached Banyan Tree Homestay at 2pm. After lunch we had some time to rest before going birding in the

evening, when we saw Blue-bearded Bee-eater, Brown-headed Barbet, Indian Paradise Flycatcher and Brown

Shrike.

We met later at 7.30pm in the dining area and added a few new species to our checklist.

Day 10 Monday 28th November

This morning we went to Topslip, in the Annamalai Tiger Reserve, with packed lunches. Accompanied by two

guides, we had a good three hour walk in the forest and saw a variety of birds including Malabar Trogon, Great

Hornbill, Malabar Parakeet, Yellow-browed Bulbul and Ruby-throated Bulbul.

After lunch we visited a medicinal plant garden where we gathered good information on its importance and uses.

We also had a walk and saw a fig tree with fruits and many birds feasting on it, such as Asian Fairy-Bluebird,

Malabar Barbet, Blyth’s Starling and Southern Hill Myna.

In the evening we went for a walk around a plantation and learned about cocoa processing and different spices.

Day 11 Tuesday 29th November

We left Banyan Tree Homestay at 8am. We stopped in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and went for a walk with the

guide. We had great sightings of Grizzled Giant Squirrel. There was a group of Tufted Langur and everyone

enjoyed watching and photographing them. We also had some bird sightings including Eurasian Sparrowhawk,

Shikra, Small Minivet and Common Iora.

We reached Munnar at 1.30pm. Later we went to a nearby patch of forest, mainly to look for Nilgiri Wood

Pigeon, and we were fortunate enough to get good sightings of a few. We also had close views of Nilgiri

Flycatcher, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Indian Scimitar Babbler and Kerala Laughingthrush.

Day 12 Wednesday 30th November

Today we had an early breakfast before going to Eravikulam National Park, where we saw a Nilgiri Thar on the

road and everyone had a good view of it. We also had good sightings of White-bellied Blue Robin, Nilgiri Pipit,

Kerala Laughingthrush and Indian Blackbird. We also found a group of Nilgiri Tahr just standing on the edge of

a mountain. We visited the Park Interpretation Center where we looked at the photographs and read some

information about the park.

After lunch we went through a patch of forest and found mixed hunting flocks of birds including Orange

Minivet, Bar-winged Flycatcher-shrike, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch and Great Tit. We continued our walk, spotting

a few more birds like Indian Scimitar Babbler, Greenish Warbler and Square-tailed Bulbul. As we were watching

the birds, we spotted a Dusky Striped Squirrel and everyone had a clear view of it.

Day 13 Thursday 1st December

We left Munnar by 8am and headed towards Periyar. En route, we enjoyed watching the tea estates and saw

Jungle Striped Squirrel, Nilgiri Pipit and Blue Rock Thrush.

We reached Araniya Nivas in time for lunch. Later we went for a walk around the hotel. It was cloudy and

started to rain so we returned to the hotel. Our day ended with evening coffee and adding a few more species to

our checklist.

Day 14 Friday 2nd December

It was a cloudy morning as we went for a trek with a local guide. As we entered the forest, we noticed Malabar

Grey Hornbill and Yellow-browed Bulbul feeding on a fruiting tree. As the clouds cleared, more bird activity

started and we had good views of White-bellied Treepie, Malabar Trogon, White-bellied Blue Flycatcher and

Emerald Dove. At the backwaters we saw Green Sandpiper, Striated Heron, Oriental Darter and Wooly-necked

Stork.

In the afternoon we went on a boat safari, spotting huge groups of Sambar Deer, Elephants, India Gaurs and

Wild Boar. Bird sightings included Great and Little Cormorants, Oriental Darter, Brahminy Kite and Ashy

Woodswallow. We also had a great sighting of Smooth-coated Otters swimming across the river and rolling on

the riverbank, which we all enjoyed. While returning, we noticed two Great Hornbills sitting on a dry tree

branch.

In the evening we took a night walk with a forest department guide. Leech socks and torchlights were provided.

Walking at night was a great experience, and we spotted animals including Sambar Deer, Porcupine, Mouse

Deer, Black-napped hare, Brown Palm Civet and Indian Gaur.

Day 15 Saturday 3rd December

We all gathered for our morning walk, and today we went to a different forest accompanied by local guides. At

one stop we spotted many birds including Black-headed Oriole, Malabar Woodshrike, Asian Fairy-Bluebird,

Bronzed Drongo, Small Minivet and Lesser Goldenback. The guide spotted a pair of Oriental Scops Owl at

roost and we enjoyed great views. As we walked we saw many birds like Malabar Parakeet, Greater Flameback

and Malabar Trogon.

We had one more boat ride today, during which we saw birds including White-throated Kingfisher, cormorants

and Oriental Darter. We saw big herds of Sambar Deer, Elephants and Gaurs in the grassland area.

Later, we went for an easy night walk and saw Indian Flying Squirrel on a tree, many Sambar Deer, Mouse Deer

and a group of Elephants.

Day 16 Sunday 4th December

We left Periyar after breakfast and headed to Alleppy, reaching our houseboat at 12.30pm. After lunch we saw

many birds in the wetlands. Later, some of us went out in a boat and we saw many birds including egrets, terns,

Blue-tailed Bee-eater, sandpipers and Asian Openbill.

Day 17 Monday 5th December

We left the houseboat after breakfast and headed towards Thattekad Bird Sanctuary. At a stop on the way we

saw many Glossy Ibis in a wetland, and also had sightings of Little Grebe, Stork-billed Kingfisher and Black-

winged Stilt.

We reached Thattekad Bird Sanctuary at 2pm and a local guide joined us. We went to see Ceylon Frogmouth and

everyone enjoyed having close views of it. Later we went to a different patch of forest where we saw Brown Fish

Owl, Brown Hawk-Owl, Brown Wood Owl and others birds like Racket-tailed Drongo, Malabar Parakeet and

Rufus Treepie.

We Left Thattekad at 5pm and reached Kochin at 7.30pm. After freshening up, we gathered in the restaurant for

dinner and a briefing about our programme for tomorrow.

Day 18 Tuesday 6th December

Today was spent sightseeing, accompanied by a local guide. We went to many historical places such as St.

Frances’ Church, Kochi Palace, Dutch Palace and Dobby Textiles, and were briefed about the history behind

each place.

In the evening we had a boat ride and enjoyed seeing the birds, Chinese fishing nets and the harbour. After that

we went to a Kathakali show, which is a traditional dance in Kerala. We enjoyed watching it for almost two

hours. Later we returned to the hotel and had a delicious dinner.

Day 19 Wednesday 7th December

We had an early departure from the hotel to get to the airport on time. At the airport we said our thanks and

goodbyes to Dilan before catching our flight back to the UK, where another Naturetrek adventure came to an

end.
