John Smurthwaite joined Frank Small & Associates in Melbourne, Australia in 1971 having moved from Fibremakers (ICI). After a few years as Managing Director of the Frank Small & Associates o�ce in Melbourne, John moved to Asia to head up the FSA Asia operations in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. John began engineering the rapid expansion of FSA in the Asia region with acquisitions in Indonesia, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan and The Philippines in the mid 80s. In the 90s, he then set up the FSA business in Japan and India through JVs and acquisitions and Vietnam. John celebrates his 43rd anniversary with TNS this year. John was awarded the Boss of the New Millennium 2000/2001 by the Minister of Human Resources Malaysia.

Pamela Foong has more than 30 years of experience in both secretarial and administrative areas including training of secretarial support sta� and is currently a member of MAPSA Advisory Council of Past Presidents and a life-member since November 1975. She has served as President for two consecutive terms of o�ce from April 1998 till March 2003. Pamela is a Certi�ed Professional Trainer accredited by Malaysia Instutite of Management and Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Bhd. She serves as in-house trainer and lecturer for the CPS study program. Pamela was attached with Texas Instruments Malaysia for 29 years as Executive Assistant to the Managing Director having served 8 bosses(7 expatriates and 1 Malaysian). Pamela was awarded Secretary Of The Year (1984/1985); and the Steadtler “Topstar Secretary-of- the-Year” Award in May 1994. Lim comes with 40 years of work life since 1971. His speciality is in Strategic Sales & Marketing Development, Organisational Turnaround and Management Culture Transformation. People development is his passion. His last position as Managing Director of Ricoh Malaysia (1999-2011) displayed his executive leadership in the digital o�ce solutions. Lim �rst started his work life learning about operations and organisation management from 1971 till 1981. For the next 10 years, Lim learned all about Sales Management after joining Xerox Corporation from 1981 till 1990. In 1991, Lim joined Inchcape Malaysia, which then became Ricoh Malaysia in 2000. The Malaysian Association of Professional Secretaries & Administrators (MAPSA) is a not-for-profit professional association for office professionals with approximately 1,000 members and affiliates in Malaysia. MAPSA’s mission is to enhance the success of career minded administrative professionals by providing opportunities for growth through training, leadership and community building.

The Association founded in 1968 as Secretaries’ Society Malaysia provides a professional network and educational resources for secretarial staff. The association's name was changed in 2003 to Malaysian Association of Professional Secretaries & Administrators to encompass the large number of varied administrative job titles and recognize the advancing role of administrative professionals in business and government.

MAPSA is an active member of the Association of Secretaries and Administrative Professionals, Asia Pacific (ASAPAP) and The National Council of Women's Organization Malaysia (NCWO). MAPSA sister-associations are Sabah Association of Secretaries (SAS), Secretaries' Society Sarawak (SSS), Johor Association of Professional Secretaries & Administrators (JAPSA).

WHO QUALIFIES AS AN ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONAL?Many people who contribute to the workplace in a variety of settings. The International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) defines administrative professionals as “individuals who are responsible for administrative tasks and coordination of information in support of an office-related environment and who are dedicated to furthering their personal and professional growth in their chosen profession.” Research shows that many workers around the world still hold the “secretary” job title; however, many alternative titles have become more popular, such as administrative assistant, office coordinator, administrative specialist, executive assistant, and office manager.

2014PURPOSEThe Administrative Professional Award (formerly known as SSMer-of-the-Year Award) was created in 1983 by the Malaysian Association of Professional Secretaries & Administrators (MAPSA) to honor an Administrative Professional who has shown outstanding performance and made significant contributions in the following areas:

• Commitment and dedication to the profession.• Contribution towards the progress of the administrative profession.• Performed work beyond the call of duty.• Contribution to the community.

This prestigious MAPSA Award will be presented at an exclusive MAPSA Award Presentation Luncheon on Wednesday 23 April 2014 at Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral Hotel. The winner will represent MAPSA to compete at the Asia-Pacific level, the qualifying heats and finals of which will be held in conjunction with the biennial 22nd Association of Secretaries and Administrators in Asia-Pacific (ASA) Congress at Avari Towers Hotel in Karachi, Pakistan from 13-17 September 2014.

GUIDELINES• All working Administrative Professionals are eligible to participate with the exception of the Award Selection Committee (ASC) and incumbent principal officers of MAPSA.• Candidates must be Malaysian citizens.• Candidates may nominate themselves. Each proposer may make one nomination only.• Candidates may be required to attend an interview in Kuala Lumpur at their own expense.• Short-listed candidates must attend the AP Award Presentation Luncheon at Kuala Lumpur.• Outstation shortlisted candidates may be called for an interview in person or via Skype.• Candidates are to abide by the guidelines and requirements of the AP Award.• False or misleading representations of facts towards supporting the Award criteria will disqualify the candidates immediately.

RECOGNITION AND REWARDSThe AP Award recipient will be accorded the following:• Name will be engraved on the perpetual AP Award Trophy and will receive a replica plaque.• Two years free MAPSA membership for the year 2014-2015.• Entitled to attend all MAPSA functions during the year 2014-2015.• Fully paid conference fee to 2014 APW Conference. • Represent MAPSA and Malaysia for the ASA Award at the 22nd ASA Congress in Pakistan.• Full Sponsorship – Congress fee of US$600 plus a return air-ticket to attend the ASA Congress 2014 in Pakistan.

SELECTION COMMITTEE• The Award Selection Committee (ASC) is an independent committee, comprising the AP Award Chairman, current MAPSA President and other senior members• The ASC reserves the right to make any changes. Its decision is final and no appeal will be entertained.• Final result of the AP Award winner will remain confidential until announcement at the AP Award Presentation Luncheon.• The Panel of Judges will comprise of CEOs of Multi-National Companies and Educationists.
